The English Language
Dictionaries are a part of us, a part of life. The Oxford English Dictionary shares a space on my shelf
along with the other fascinating theories of The English Language. Samuel Johnson, a great man,
published the first Oxford Dictionary in 1755. After so many years of hard work, why are we trying to
ruin our native language through text talk? This dictionary is not only a few pages of words; in fact, it
is more useful than any other tool could ever be. Reasons to our language variation can be due to
several situations such as: politics, media, education, war and technology. [1] Skimming through a
dictionary for a significant word becomes a journey of discovery, making you feel a hundred times
more intelligent, than exploring for a word through the internet. The feeling of opening a good
paperback book; knowing that you will only read the word you are searching for is hardly usual.
Instead, you will feel hundreds of words entering your mind and ultimately it will give you the need to
search for the meanings behind these new captivating words. However, the use of a dictionary is
becoming less popular throughout schools, everything and everyone is made dependant towards the
internet. Who can blame them? The OED is at serious risk of losing its purpose. Is r language
changing? You ask. Text talk is aimed at spoken language. First of all, let s start off with the common
initialisms such as brb , omg and lol a few years back I thought that lol stood for lots of love

The Social Aspect Of A Self Image
Introduction Oxford Dictionaries awarded the term Selfie as word of the year in 2013 and define this
phenomenon as a photograph that has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or web cam and
uploaded to a social media arguing the selfie to be the modern approach to self portraiture with More
then 1 Million Selfie s taken each day . The global popularity of this ritual of social networking has
even had a song dedicated to this trend, symbolising of an era of youth culture. The bandwagon
mentality fashioned from this phenomenon of a popular trend, in effect attracts greater popularity as a
result of people doing something, not based on its merit, but based on what others do. The concept of
a self image is not a new idea as the involvement of self portraits pre dates the Internet and evolving
technology. Even the photo booth dates back as far as 1880, and attracted groups of friends much as it
does today . So it would be easy to argue that there was already a social aspect to controlling your
pictures and a slowly developing technological advances would allow. Until the 1970s, instant
Polaroid cameras could be held at arm s length and encouraged people to take more intimate photos as
well as instant developing pictures. History/ Culture Lots of people claim to be the originator of the
Selfie. Since 1981 Hollywood cameraman, Lester Wisbrod claims he is first person to take celebrity
selfies. However Australia also lays claims to inventing the

Monitoring At First As The Sight Of The Sofa
Thursday, June 12th, 3041
The monitor crackled at first as the screen became brighter and brighter. The signal is fuzzy and the
sound was down low. I reach for the remote and scan through the channels. It only takes me a couple
of seconds to find the broadcast. I turn up the volume and sit down on the edge of the sofa.
The broadcaster s voice was deep and booming as he announced what today s events were to be. On
the screen was a vast green field surrounded by thousands of people being forcefully held back by the
big black barricades. Some were holding up signs above their heads whilst others were flailing their
hands in order to get attention from the guards standing at the edge of the field. The field itself had
been kept clear except ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sadly, a hierarchy has been formed because of these dates, those with a long time to live essentially
ruling the rest of us. If you are going to make it past the age of 55 you are automatically assigned a
council seat and from there you can work your way up to being part of the government. Our dates are
similar to that of societal classes. Lower class is those who are going to die young who live in fear
until they are no longer living. Middle class is made up of people who will live as long as their early
fifties. Then there is upper class. Upper class is for the lucky ones; who don t live in fear, who are
treated with the utmost respect and who don t die young.
My monitor screen flickered trying to find a good enough signal to stream the broadcast clearly.
Jumping back and forth until it returned to the live stream where the girl was now being led out onto
the field. Her hands were tied behind her back and her head was looking down, facing the ground.
Four guards walled her as she made the walk to the small grey cement slab.
It is now time. We strongly advise you to tell your children to look away.
I can t fully tell, but I think there was a note of remorse in the broadcaster s voice.
I sit paralysed and continue to watch the grotesque broadcast, loathing myself for doing so. A tall man
with slicked back black hair stepped forward. His face cracked with an apologetic grin before he
reached down and

What Is My Personal Experience Essay
Everyone has been through a personal experience, whether it has changed their lives for better or
worse. These experiences can be eclectic events such as going out to explore the world or even
devastating events such as tragic accidents. My personal experience occurred a year ago during the
summer when I took a trip to visit San Francisco, California with my family. This trip to San
Francisco was a thrilling adventure due to the city being very beautiful and breathtaking. During my
visit to the city I was able to take part in the beaches, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Six Flags.
To begin with, the beaches near San Francisco are stunning. California has nice weather during the
summer to attend beaches because it is not too hot or chilly outside. ... Show more content on

My family and I were able to cross the famous bridge a few times in the car as we traveled a bit
around California. The view from the bridge was beautiful during the day and as well at night. It was
nice during the day to see the sun sparkling on the water as boats sailed by, but appealing during
nightfall because of the bright lights on the bridge. Also, the city lights around it brought out the
overall awe of the bridge. During one of our passing on the bridge, we were able to make a quick stop
at the top of the hill and take a few family pictures together with the bridge. My brother would tease
me every time anyone brings up our visit to the Golden Gate Bridge because I was afraid to stand near
the edge of the mountain to take our family photos since I imagined I was going to slip and fall.
Furthermore, as we traveled through the bridge I had noticed telephone posts on either side of the
bridge. These telephones were for the suicidal people who thought it was time to end their lives. The
telephones were used to connect those who were suicidal to a counselor to help talk them out of
committing such a tragedy. They may have helped saved plenty lives. It has been known by many that
the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the many bridges that countless of people tend to go to in order to

Marge Piercy s Poem A Work Of Artifice
A Work of Artifice Women have historically been mistreated and considered the weaker gender , while
men are seen as the dominant gender. Feminism isn t about making women stronger. Women are
already strong. It s about changing the way the world perceives that strength. G.D Anderson. This
quote from G.D Anderson corresponds to Marge Piercy s poem A Work of Artifice . A Work of
Artifice is an allegory published in 1999. The speaker is a feminist and the poem is written in third
person. The poem sets a sarcastic tone while talking about the oppression of women and how women
suffer in society. Piercy uses poetic devices such as metaphors, diction and allusions to show how
society subjugates women to fit the accepted idea of beauty. Throughout A Work of Artifice , an
extended metaphor of a Bonsai Tree is used. The Bonsai tree represents a women. A gardener is also
used to represent a man and/or society. The speaker expresses that the Bonsai Tree could have grown
eighty feet tall but was pruned by a gardener to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Diction is used very early in A work of ARTIFICE , the word artifice is a relevant example of the use
of diction. When the reader first sees the word art in artifice, an image of beauty arouses the mind.
However, artifice has nothing to do with beauty , it actually means to deceive others. This is seen in
the poem as the bonsai tree or the women is being oppressed to fit the ideal image of beauty in society.
Another relevant example of the use of diction is the word pruned . Pruned is often associated with
cutting down a tree or plant to make it look more attractive . In the poem the gardener pruned the
bonsai tree. Through this , the speaker shows how society suppresses women from reaching their full
protein to fit their stereotype and remain attractive . The use of diction compliments the extended
metaphor and helps show how society subjugates

Essay Comparing The Tell Tale Heart And The Black Cat
The two stories The Tell Tale Heart and The Black Cat are both stories written by Edgar Allan Poe.
Both of the stories use the language of murder, violence , and insanity. They both take place at night
time and both of have frightening scenes/parts. If you look at the narrators they don t look similar at
all viewing how they live and their personal responsibilities. Both main characters or narrators share a
common criminal history in their flashback, which says their motives and eventually confessing to
their crimes. Both of them also have a sense of guilt of their crimes. As the story goes on both of the
narrators both try to defend their sanity. So both of these characters from two different stories have a
lot similarities. In the story ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In here the story is told by a man or the narrator in prison confessing his actions. The victim or the
person he kill was his wife this time. Before the murder the narrator tell us that he and his wife were
very happy, and together they loved and owned a variety and different kinds of pets. The narrator finds
a cat on day and takes the cat in as his pet the cat was a remarkably large and beautiful cat entirely
black, and sagacious to an astonishing degree. But the narrator soon thinks that the cat hates him and
decides to take out the cat s eye socket which he does, and in return the cat loved him not hated him.
Then after that incident the narrator hands the cat on a tree branch. Then after that the narrator is
reminded of the ugliness of his damaged eye. The narrator also states in the book that he was
alcoholic. Not long after he hangs the cat on the branch he ends up killing the cat. After that the
narrator finds another cat which Closely resembled his former pet in every respect but one this new cat
had a large, although indefinite splotch of white, covering nearly the whole region of the breast.
Eventually, the white splotch ends up terrifying him because in it he sees the picture of a gallows. So
this can be interpreted that the second cat and its changing fur as the projection of the narrator s guilt,
because the narrator thinks that the 2nd cat is the same cat as the first and

Ancient Religion Vs Modern Culture
There are similarities in how the ancient and modern cultures view the heavens despite there being
many more differences. Like modern culture, ancient culture understood the earth to be approximately
spherical. About 2,500 years ago, Anaxagoras and Empedocles proposed justifications for the
spherical nature of Earth. When Earth is between the moon and the sun, during a lunar eclipse, they
recognized Earth s shadow on the moon. The shadow that moves across the moon is clearly round
which suggests that Earth is a sphere. Another similarity is the use of time in making astronomical
observations. The Mesopotamians measured time using waterclocks to quantify the passage of time,
and became fascinated by charting the occurrence of celestial events,

American Intervention In Iraq
As years pass, Americans are becoming increasingly critical of the American invasion of Iraq
following the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. As a result, many Americans
are apprehensive in supporting another American intervention in a Middle Eastern country during the
middle of an uprising. For years, politicians have echoed the same sentiment: I will not create another
Iraq in the Middle East, however, when faced with the opportunity to do exactly that, it seems the
decision is not so simple. On one hand, a direct intervention would be extremely costly and very might
well be unsuccessful entirely. On the other hand, taking a hands off approach and instead opting to
employ diplomacy and encourage American allies to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

argues that the situation in Syria more convincingly warrants American intervention than the situation
in Libya; however, government officials and the American public remain largely apprehensive to make

program to covertly secure supplies to nuclear weapons, and their harboring of radical groups that
posed a threat to the United States as warrants for American involvement in the Syrian Civil War
(Fly). Fly also argues that the U.S. and its allies should establish protected zones around threatened
cities although he neglects to describe what he means by that and seriously consider arming the
opposition (Fly). Similar to the previous argument made by Abdulhamid, Fly argues that the United
States has an obligation to the Syrian people to intervene in the name of human

Reaction Paper On Piezoelectric Ceramics
Piezoelectric ceramics are inorganic nonmetallic materials that have the property of achieving
conversion between mechanical energy and electrical energy [1]. This property is called
piezoelectricity. Curie brothers first discovered piezoelectricity in 1880. Their experiment
demonstrated the generation of electricity when well prepared crystals of quartz were under
mechanical pressure. Inversely, a mechanical distortion occurred in response to the voltage applied to
a piezoelectric material [2]. Typical crystals such as quartz, tourmaline, and Rochelle salt exhibit
piezoelectric effect but they mostly exhibit only a weak piezoelectric effect, usually have low
mechanical strength. Some ones are very sensitive to moisture and their operated temperature ... Show

Applications of piezoelectric ceramics can use both direct and converse piezoelectric effects.
Generally, by applying compressive stresses, a charge or high voltage is generated due to the direct
piezoelectric effect, while the converse piezoelectric effect leads to small displacements caused by
applying an electric field to the ceramics. Acoustic and ultrasonic vibrations can be generated by an
alternating field tuned at the mechanical resonant frequency of a piezoelectric device and can be
detected by amplifying the field generated by vibration incident on the material, which is usually used
for ultrasonic transducers. The flexor transducer consists of two piezoelectric ceramic thin plates poled
in opposite directions and can be used in gramophone pick ups and ultrasonic accelerometers. The
generation of surface waves enables filters and other devices to be made for use at frequencies
exceeding 1GHz. Applications of piezoelectric materials have now expanded into many fields since
the discovery of the effect by the Curie brothers in 1880. Significant progress in applications was
made possible after the discovery of PZT ceramic materials. Piezoelectric devices can be divided into
four general categories: generators, sensors, actuators, and transducers depending of what type of
physical effect used. For all of these basic

We evaluated the impact of desmopressin and α1 blocker tamsulosin combined therapy in treatment of
LUTS/BPH patients with noctuia. BPH is a common disorder, which affect about 40% of men older
than 50 years. Nocturia is a common manifestation of BPH (6) that is not only bothersome but can
also have a marked impact on sleep patterns and decreases the QoL (9, 10). Different treatment
modalities for LUTS/BPH have been used with success. However, treatment for nocturia has been
reported to be less satisfactory than treatment of other LUTS and remains one of the most difficult
LUTs to treat. Different treatment plans were assessed, either for nocturia by itself or that occurring in
association with BPH. As, BPH is a potential risk factor for nocturia, α blockers are considered a
potential treatment for nocturia (11). The α1 blockers are the most common treatment for LUTS/BPH
and all currently available α1 blockers have similar efficacy and improve symptoms by approximately
35% and Qmax by 1.8 2.5 mL/s (12, 13). Many studies assessed the effect of α1 blockers, either alone
or in combination with 5 α reductase inhibitors on nocturia associated with BPH. Tamsulosin OCAS

mean IPSS when compared to placebo (14). However, the reduction in nocturnal voids was associated
with a minimal difference between tamsulosin and placebo with a mean change of 3.1 to 2.0 night

The Contribution of Patient Case Studies on our...
Although it shares cognitive neuroscience s roots, cognitive neuropsychology has developed into a
discrete discipline. While cognitive neuroscience studies neural organisation of the brain, cognitive
neuropsychology concerns itself with the brain s functional architecture; Coltheart (2010) describes
this as a distinction between brain and mind. According to, among others, Coltheart (2002, cited
Coltheart, 2010) this makes cognitive neuropsychology a branch of cognitive psychology rather than
neuroscience.
Patient case studies have played a critical role in developing cognitive neuropsychology into a
separate discipline, although data from case studies can support and even progress cognitive

Initially patients with brain damage were studied with the aim of understanding and treating their
disorder. This was the case for Phineas Gage, who developed behavioural changes after a tamping iron
passed through his brain in 1848 (Harlow, 1868, cited Jansari, 2010). However, progress in the field of
cognitive psychology has enabled the development of complex theoretical models of cognitive
function and improved research techniques. Advances in technology have given researchers the tools
to view damaged brains before death and compare them to normally functioning, intact brains. As a
result, a more challenging aim of cognitive neuropsychology has emerged: understanding and
explaining normal cognitive processes. This is achieved by studying a deficit in cognitive function in a
brain damaged patient and making inferences about intact cognition. For example, Shallice and
Warrington s (1970, cited Hitch, 2010) investigation of patient KF with acquired brain damage
showed that he had an impaired auditory digit span but normal intelligence and performance in long
term learning and memory and understanding spoken language. This supported a dissociation between
short term memory and long term memory initially proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1971, cited
Hitch, 2010). Thus a model of the intact memory system is developed or supported, which in turn
explains memory deficits in patients with brain damage. Coltheart (2010) lists nine areas of cognitive
processing, identified

Mccarthy s Blood Meridian
Blood Meridian (1985) takes place in the nineteenth century in a time where America was going
through a period known as the Manifest Destiny. A period which saw the territorial expansion
westward towards the pacific, usually on populations who were seen as unable to govern themselves.
One could say that this period partly motivated the war between Mexico (roughly between 1846
1848), a war that plays an important role throughout the book. By doing so McCarthy highlights and
exaggerates the extent of brutality and hypocrisy that took place. McCarthy makes use of very explicit
and horrific terms to describe the setting of the book, by doing this one gets the sense that he implies
that humans are capable of such heartless and sinister acts, that ... Show more content on

Developmental Theories That Assist Social Workers Essay
Developmental theories are integral to a social workers approach when working with children, and
families as they help to guide and explain situations and behaviours. As social workers have an ethical
and professional responsibility to their clients, they need to have an established set of guiding theories
which underpin their practice. If they work without these theories, they could place their clients at risk
of harm by practising from personal assumptions. They also help the social worker understand and
manage these situations and to reach the desired outcomes. As suggested by Teater (2014), Theory is
an essential ingredient in practice that guides the way in which social workers view and approach
individuals, groups, communities and society (Chap 1, p.1). This report will identify and focus on
three important developmental theories that assist social workers in their practice. These consist of
work by Erikson, Bowlby and Piaget. Erikson s theory focuses on the model of life stage
development; Piaget s theory focuses on the cognitive processes while Bowlby s theory focuses on
attachment. Despite these theories representing different aspects of social science, they all have the
same guiding principle of development. Once the social worker has identified the relevant theory
required, they then use a model to implement the theory. This report will examine and discuss the
Collaborative Family Work Model. The Collaborative Family Work Model works in a step by step

were either offended by the misrepresentation of the historical facts or of the movie s view of
Christians. Nonetheless, there were people who praised the movie and thought it was spectacular.

The first similarity was the depiction of Reynald de Chatillon. His image is the most historically
accurate character of the movie. According to Ibn al Athir, Prince Reynald was one of the greatest and
wickedest of the Franks, the most hostile to the Muslims and the most dangerous to them. As the
movie shows, Reynald had a running rivalry with Saladin, raiding him and even apprehending his
sister in a raid that provoked Saladin s invasion of Jerusalem. Even Christian historians agreed that
Reynald was an evil figure. Another similarity involved the moral character of Balian in the movie and
the actual Balian. In historical accounts, Balian is seen as the Christian who retains his wisdom and
composure leading up to, and even after, the disaster of Hattin. The movie uses him as a template for
an ideal knight, showing his journey to Jerusalem to seek forgiveness for him and his dead wife as an
example of the pure motives of the Crusades. Balian characterizes the medieval ideas of knighthood
and was a revered knight whose standing was equal to that of a king. The Patriarch of Jerusalem
begged him to defend the city against Saladin s impending attack and he was the last defender of
Jerusalem, just like in the movie. According to the online article, Medieval as Modern, Balian s speech

In this paper, the author will delineate the following developmental theories, Freudian, Object
Relational, and the main components found in Attachment. The main theorists that will be addressed
include, Sigmund Freud, John Bowlby, Mary Ainsworth, and some work of Melanie Klein. The author
will provide a detailed explanation on attachment and object relations theory and how it can be
incorporated with a client who is suffering from Anorexia Nervosa and how the impact of
development correlates with this specific clientele. As well as, examples of therapeutic interventions
utilized in a clinical setting will be explored through the course of this paper.

During the latency stage, the child/client begins to imitate their behaviors, mannerisms, speech, and
values of culture. For instance, this will initially allow the child to identify with their primary sexual
characteristics towards the corresponding parent, leading to increased sexual desires and behaviors.
Sexual latency begins from the age of six and lasts approximately five years. The child begins to
associate with the same sex orientation and is able to distinguish appropriate behaviors in society,
creating the superego. The genital phase begins from the ages of eleven to eighteen, which comprises
of increased pleasure from masturbation and is experienced more frequently than the anal stage. Freud
rationalized that all individuals are homosexual creatures; however, individuals do not experience
homosexual behaviors or relationships. Throughout this stage, individuals will begin to formulate
relationships with the opposite sex, which supersedes further development of the superego leading to
individuation and autonomy (Garcia, 1995).
In the next sections, the author will discuss the framework of attachment theory by John Bowlby and
Mary Ainsworth since both theorists worked collaboratively with attachment styles and object
relations theory. John Bowlby coined the theory of attachment based on the object relations

My Girl Book Vs Movie
Recently in class we watched a film my girl(1991) after we had read the book a small free kiss in the
dark. Both books had examples of hardship and courage which is the unit we have been working on in
class. Although the book had things that were the same in the movie, there were events that were
slightly different, but both characters went through hardship or displayed courage in the same way.
Courage being strength in the face of pain or grief.
Hardship being severe suffering or privation. So let s get to it then, these are three examples of
courage and hardship that is both in the movie and in the book.
For starters both had had a huge loss in their lives. The loss they had endured was the deaths of their
mothers. This loss affected the way I they thought, for example Vada in the movie continually thought
she was sick or was going to die. She also believed she had killed her mother. Skip from the book just

also the fact her mother died. Vada is picked on by girls because she has a friend who is a boy. Skips
war however is far more conflicted due to the fact he is part of a real war. The war strengthens Skip,
who becomes a leader who a teen parent Tia looks up to. Skip matures whilst being a big brother to a

and in return, do not ask for the help they so desperately need. We are from a generation where mental
health and illness is so negatively stigmatized that nobody wants to talk about it or seek help for fear
of being criticized. This needs to stop, and I believe the only way to change this is to talk about it, and
introduce people to more unique ways to approach it. I know that I dreaded seeing a therapist for so

Inventory 16, a unidimensional measure. For this assessment, the higher the score, the more
narcissistic the individual is. Furthermore, Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale was used to assess the levels
of self esteem in which statements are rated on a 4 point Likert scale ranging from Strongly agree (0)
to Strongly Disagree (3) and measures both positive and negative feelings about the self. Gathered
results demonstrated the positive and significant correlations between addictive use of social media
and narcissism (p .01). Additionally, statistics revealed that self esteem contributed the most to the
excessive use social media (p .001). Other factors also

How To Write An Essay On The Hunger Games
The Hunger Games is a dystopian trilogy written by Suzanne Collins. It was originally published on
September, 2008 and the story takes place in Panem, a nation formed from a post apocalyptic North
America.
In a world of limited resources, the despotic government run by the wealthy Capitol maintains its
citizens in line by separating them by districts and reinforcing severe class separations. The annual
televised event known as the Hunger Games, created 74 years ago as a punishment for the rebellion
led by the extinct 13º district against the Capitol, is their strongest tool to promote disunion and to
discourage insubordination. Every year, 24 children from the 12 remaining districts, one male and one
female ranging from 12 to 18 years old, are chosen at the annual Reaping ceremonies to serve as
tributes and represent their districts in the games.

It is much more brutal, violent and bloody than Hunger Games . One of the strongest points of the
novel is that it explores what makes regular kids descend into madness, while others withhold their
wits. It is an exceptional entertainment for people with a tolerance for high amounts of violence yet
also a remarkable study of the psychology of extreme fear, with a few insights about totalitarianism as
well.
Resemblance between these two books are evident. They both exploit the same premise of teenagers
forced to participate in a deadly game where only one person wins and lives. However, these books
are completely different at the same time. While the Hunger Games is a personal story of survival
from the point of view of just one player, Battle Royale is a complex story which follows all
participants of the game, throwing you into the head of a personage and giving you their full lenght

Summary Of Stanley Milgram s 1963 Obedience Study
In Week 1, students focused on research ethics and whether (or not) social psychologist Stanley
Milgram s 1963 obedience study was ethical (Mason, 2018). Milgram organized the study because he
wanted to know how people might become strongly influenced against their personal moral and belief
structures (Mason, 2018). Roscoe argued that Milgram s 1983 disobedience study was completely
ethical because the organizer pre advised subjects as to the voluntary nature of the research and
because deception is justified within psychological research. Roscoe also declared that no Milgram
study participant experienced any negative long term psychological effect. Additionally, Roscoe
contended that all subjects were told, post study, that the administered ... Show more content on

Milgram s obedience paradigm is widely accepted to have arisen from an inclination to surrender
responsibility to authoritarian figures (Reicher, Haslam, Smith, 2012). However, this paradigm must
be held suspect because of blatant ethical considerations weakening conclusions. Fundamentally,
Milgram s was responsible for protecting his subjects. He did not protect them. He chose to use
deceptive methods, which led to short term trauma and possibly long term, according to at least one
participant. The outcome could have been far worse, with participants succumbing to heart attack or
stroke resulting from the trauma. Roscoe s arguments in support of Milgram s study being ethically
sound are not rooted in scholarly research. Therefore, further discussion will be

Favorite Room Analysis
The essay I decided to fix was the very first essay, Favorite Room. The reason I decided to fix the
Favorite Room essay was because of all the rules I broke. When I wrote the paper, I had several
mistakes which involved words ending in ing. The problem with sentences which end in ing is the
sentence becomes a sentence fragment. In the first draft I did for the essay most of my sentences were
sentence fragments because of the ing problem. The reason the sentences were all sentences fragments
was because all of the sentences I had with an ing word, those sentences started with an ing word. The
sentence would have a predicate and a verb in the sentence which creates the fragment. An example of
the old essay sentence would be, standing in the

Genetically Modified Organisms By Margaret Atwood
How far is too far when it comes to genetically modified organisms? Margaret Atwood shares her
view on GMOs in Oryx and Crake. Atwood often expresses distaste for these altered organisms
through her examples of pigoons and other genetically modified foods, which are still relatively new
in our society. Despite more commonly occurring dislike from Atwood, she sees a few positives to
GMOs. Although GMOs can increase food supply with higher yields, genetically modified organisms
should be regulated to a certain extent for the sake of society s overall wellbeing. Because there has
not been enough long term testing on GMOs to detect possible problems, everyone s health could be
suffering. There are few laws regulating genetically modified organisms due to the fact that they have
not been around for a long time. No long term testing has been concluded, therefore there is no
scientific conclusion when it comes to the safeness of genetically modified organisms. Compared to
other countries, the United States regulations on GMOs is relatively favorable towards their
development. According to the Library of Congress, a series of polls conducted from 2001 to 2006
found that the publics understand of biotechnology technology, which produces these genetically
modified foods, was relatively low, and that consumers were relatively unaware of the extent to which
their foods included genetically modified ingredients (United States). Sixty four countries around the
world require labeling of

In the first five to ten minutes of the film there is minimal to almost zero talking, this is not only

has a very carefully crafted minimal dialog to almost put the viewer in an awkward state where the
extreme lack of dialog, heightnes the other senses causing the viewer to notice carefully placed details
by the director. One of these details that is shown in both the beginning and end of the film is the use
of mason jars. The beginning the camera moves into a storage container where we see the shelves are
stock full of mason jars filled with fruit, dried and perserved roots and berries. This is juxtoposed
greatly to the end of the film when you see Ben with five brown paper bags packing lunches for his

Alan Menken, a famous Composer, Actor, and Artist, was born on July 22,1949 in New Rochelle,
New York. Alan received a taste of the music life from the start, his mother, Judy Menken, was a
young actress/playwright and his father, Norman Menken, DDS, was a piano playing dentist
(Biography Comments 1). His whole family loved Broadway musicals and they spent many nights
together just listening to his father play piano, Alan once said, I showed an interest in piano at a very
young age, but I hated to practice, so when my parents left the room I d make up my own version of
the piece. That s how I started composing (The Whole New World of Alan Menken 1). Menken lived a
very happy and prosperous childhood at home with his sisters Faye and Leah until 1966 when he
moved out to attend college. He attended New York University s College of Arts and Sciences with a
Musicology degree, and was admitted into the BMI Musical Theater Workshop, where he wrote small
musicals for them but would also sneak away to the piano room and compose songs that he kept to
himself. In 1968 he wrote his first musical, Separate Ways, for NYU. (Biography Comments 1). When
Menken graduated from NYU, he wrote a few musicals for The Downtown Ballet Company that were
not very successful, but he considers it one of the best moments of his life because it is where he met a
ballet dancer who eventually became his wife of forty four years, Janis Roswick. Still working for the

City Life Chapter Summaries
Chapter 1 of experiencing cities was all about the foundations of the constantly growing metropolitan
city. It includes everything from facts about how fast our cities are growing to city as a state of mind.
But the section that intrigued me the most was symbolic interactionism and the study of city life.
symbolic interactivity means that people are the ones who play an active role in their environment. In
other words the area you live in is going to be determined by the way you interact with others and how
you live your life. This idea was not one that shocked me but allowed me to grasp a greater
understanding as to why different cities are the way they are. For example, i m from a small town in
California with little to no crime. It is a pretty affluent area and people are pretty friendly. However
you drive about 30 miles and you are now in one of the most dangerous cities in america, Oakland
California. Here deadly shootings are a regular basis along with many other crimes. The citizens of
these towns are usually right at the or below the poverty line. So to introduce this theory to me gives
me a greater understanding as to why certain cities are dangerous and some aren t. It simply ... Show

Oakland has been in the news for many years now about its crumbling government. Schools fundings
are low, they cut the police force in almost half and no business can flourish here. These are all due to
the fact that the people in charge simply cannot do their job effectively. In order for a city like this to
get back on track it must first get leadership willing to do what it takes to make a difference. Then and
only then will you start to see this city make a turn for the

Georgia Settlement
The Reasons for the Settlement of Georgia By: Tirth Patel When James Oglethorpe came to Georgia,
he had an idea to make a settlement. In this settlement, he wanted to have a good defense, economy,
and charity. Out of these reasons for the settlement, only two of them succeeded. Georgia had a good
economy and a good defense. Georgia had a good economy, because of Georgia s trading industry.
Georgia s defense was great, because of it was the military buffer between Florida and South Carolina.
The one thing that didn t succeed in Georgia was charity. This did not work, because when the poor
people of England came, they couldn t pay their taxes, therefore they were locked up and never lived

The economy worked well, because of mercantilism. Mercantilism was a good thing for Georgia,
because of Savannah s port. At Savannah s port, all kinds of people would come and trade for some of
the main items in Georgia like wine, rice, indigo, silk, and tobacco. In the first passage, it said, The
first settlers brought silk and wine grapes, hoping that the climate would be amenable to the framing
of both. This states that the silk and wine grapes succeeded and helped Georgia s economy thrive. The
economy also exceeded because the native Americans would trade deerskins and other items to the
merchants. Britain also took raw goods and produced, manufactured items which they would ship
back to Georgia to use and trade. In the second passage, it said, England economically benefit through
the natural resources and raw materials that were sent by. This proves that England took the resources
from Georgia. In conclusion, only two of the reasons for the colonization of Georgia were
accomplished. Georgia succeeded in having a good defense and economy. The defense of Georgia was
strong, mainly, because it was the military buffer between Florida and South Carolina. It was also
great because it made treaties with the local native Americans and Georgia had plenty of fortifications.

  • 2. The English Language Dictionaries are a part of us, a part of life. The Oxford English Dictionary shares a space on my shelf along with the other fascinating theories of The English Language. Samuel Johnson, a great man, published the first Oxford Dictionary in 1755. After so many years of hard work, why are we trying to ruin our native language through text talk? This dictionary is not only a few pages of words; in fact, it is more useful than any other tool could ever be. Reasons to our language variation can be due to several situations such as: politics, media, education, war and technology. [1] Skimming through a dictionary for a significant word becomes a journey of discovery, making you feel a hundred times more intelligent, than exploring for a word through the internet. The feeling of opening a good paperback book; knowing that you will only read the word you are searching for is hardly usual. Instead, you will feel hundreds of words entering your mind and ultimately it will give you the need to search for the meanings behind these new captivating words. However, the use of a dictionary is becoming less popular throughout schools, everything and everyone is made dependant towards the internet. Who can blame them? The OED is at serious risk of losing its purpose. Is r language changing? You ask. Text talk is aimed at spoken language. First of all, let s start off with the common initialisms such as brb , omg and lol a few years back I thought that lol stood for lots of love ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Social Aspect Of A Self Image Introduction Oxford Dictionaries awarded the term Selfie as word of the year in 2013 and define this phenomenon as a photograph that has taken of oneself, typically with a smartphone or web cam and uploaded to a social media arguing the selfie to be the modern approach to self portraiture with More then 1 Million Selfie s taken each day . The global popularity of this ritual of social networking has even had a song dedicated to this trend, symbolising of an era of youth culture. The bandwagon mentality fashioned from this phenomenon of a popular trend, in effect attracts greater popularity as a result of people doing something, not based on its merit, but based on what others do. The concept of a self image is not a new idea as the involvement of self portraits pre dates the Internet and evolving technology. Even the photo booth dates back as far as 1880, and attracted groups of friends much as it does today . So it would be easy to argue that there was already a social aspect to controlling your pictures and a slowly developing technological advances would allow. Until the 1970s, instant Polaroid cameras could be held at arm s length and encouraged people to take more intimate photos as well as instant developing pictures. History/ Culture Lots of people claim to be the originator of the Selfie. Since 1981 Hollywood cameraman, Lester Wisbrod claims he is first person to take celebrity selfies. However Australia also lays claims to inventing the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Monitoring At First As The Sight Of The Sofa Thursday, June 12th, 3041 The monitor crackled at first as the screen became brighter and brighter. The signal is fuzzy and the sound was down low. I reach for the remote and scan through the channels. It only takes me a couple of seconds to find the broadcast. I turn up the volume and sit down on the edge of the sofa. The broadcaster s voice was deep and booming as he announced what today s events were to be. On the screen was a vast green field surrounded by thousands of people being forcefully held back by the big black barricades. Some were holding up signs above their heads whilst others were flailing their hands in order to get attention from the guards standing at the edge of the field. The field itself had been kept clear except ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sadly, a hierarchy has been formed because of these dates, those with a long time to live essentially ruling the rest of us. If you are going to make it past the age of 55 you are automatically assigned a council seat and from there you can work your way up to being part of the government. Our dates are similar to that of societal classes. Lower class is those who are going to die young who live in fear until they are no longer living. Middle class is made up of people who will live as long as their early fifties. Then there is upper class. Upper class is for the lucky ones; who don t live in fear, who are treated with the utmost respect and who don t die young. My monitor screen flickered trying to find a good enough signal to stream the broadcast clearly. Jumping back and forth until it returned to the live stream where the girl was now being led out onto the field. A tall man with slicked back black hair stepped forward. His face cracked with an apologetic grin before he reached down and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. What Is My Personal Experience Essay Everyone has been through a personal experience, whether it has changed their lives for better or worse. These experiences can be eclectic events such as going out to explore the world or even devastating events such as tragic accidents. My personal experience occurred a year ago during the summer when I took a trip to visit San Francisco, California with my family. This trip to San Francisco was a thrilling adventure due to the city being very beautiful and breathtaking. During my visit to the city I was able to take part in the beaches, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Six Flags. To begin with, the beaches near San Francisco are stunning. California has nice weather during the summer to attend beaches because it is not too hot or chilly outside. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... My family and I were able to cross the famous bridge a few times in the car as we traveled a bit around California. The view from the bridge was beautiful during the day and as well at night. It was nice during the day to see the sun sparkling on the water as boats sailed by, but appealing during nightfall because of the bright lights on the bridge. Also, the city lights around it brought out the overall awe of the bridge. During one of our passing on the bridge, we were able to make a quick stop at the top of the hill and take a few family pictures together with the bridge. My brother would tease me every time anyone brings up our visit to the Golden Gate Bridge because I was afraid to stand near the edge of the mountain to take our family photos since I imagined I was going to slip and fall. Furthermore, as we traveled through the bridge I had noticed telephone posts on either side of the bridge. These telephones were for the suicidal people who thought it was time to end their lives. The telephones were used to connect those who were suicidal to a counselor to help talk them out of committing such a tragedy. They may have helped saved plenty lives. • 7. Marge Piercy s Poem A Work Of Artifice A Work of Artifice Women have historically been mistreated and considered the weaker gender , while men are seen as the dominant gender. Feminism isn t about making women stronger. Women are already strong. It s about changing the way the world perceives that strength. G.D Anderson. This quote from G.D Anderson corresponds to Marge Piercy s poem A Work of Artifice . A Work of Artifice is an allegory published in 1999. The speaker is a feminist and the poem is written in third person. The poem sets a sarcastic tone while talking about the oppression of women and how women suffer in society. Piercy uses poetic devices such as metaphors, diction and allusions to show how society subjugates women to fit the accepted idea of beauty. Throughout A Work of Artifice , an extended metaphor of a Bonsai Tree is used. The Bonsai tree represents a women. A gardener is also used to represent a man and/or society. Diction is used very early in A work of ARTIFICE , the word artifice is a relevant example of the use of diction. When the reader first sees the word art in artifice, an image of beauty arouses the mind. However, artifice has nothing to do with beauty , it actually means to deceive others. This is seen in the poem as the bonsai tree or the women is being oppressed to fit the ideal image of beauty in society. Another relevant example of the use of diction is the word pruned . Pruned is often associated with cutting down a tree or plant to make it look more attractive . In the poem the gardener pruned the bonsai tree. Through this , the speaker shows how society suppresses women from reaching their full protein to fit their stereotype and remain attractive . The narrator finds a cat on day and takes the cat in as his pet the cat was a remarkably large and beautiful cat entirely black, and sagacious to an astonishing degree. But the narrator soon thinks that the cat hates him and decides to take out the cat s eye socket which he does, and in return the cat loved him not hated him. Then after that incident the narrator hands the cat on a tree branch. Then after that the narrator is reminded of the ugliness of his damaged eye. The narrator also states in the book that he was alcoholic. Not long after he hangs the cat on the branch he ends up killing the cat. After that the narrator finds another cat which Closely resembled his former pet in every respect but one this new cat had a large, although indefinite splotch of white, covering nearly the whole region of the breast. Eventually, the white splotch ends up terrifying him because in it he sees the picture of a gallows. • 9. Ancient Religion Vs Modern Culture There are similarities in how the ancient and modern cultures view the heavens despite there being many more differences. Like modern culture, ancient culture understood the earth to be approximately spherical. About 2,500 years ago, Anaxagoras and Empedocles proposed justifications for the spherical nature of Earth. When Earth is between the moon and the sun, during a lunar eclipse, they recognized Earth s shadow on the moon. The shadow that moves across the moon is clearly round which suggests that Earth is a sphere. Another similarity is the use of time in making astronomical observations. • 10. American Intervention In Iraq As years pass, Americans are becoming increasingly critical of the American invasion of Iraq following the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. As a result, many Americans are apprehensive in supporting another American intervention in a Middle Eastern country during the middle of an uprising. For years, politicians have echoed the same sentiment: I will not create another Iraq in the Middle East, however, when faced with the opportunity to do exactly that, it seems the decision is not so simple. On one hand, a direct intervention would be extremely costly and very might well be unsuccessful entirely. On the other hand, taking a hands off approach and instead opting to employ diplomacy and encourage American allies to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Jamie Fly, the Former Director for Counterproliferation Strategy at the National Security Council, argues that the situation in Syria more convincingly warrants American intervention than the situation in Libya; however, government officials and the American public remain largely apprehensive to make a move in Syria like they did in Libya. Fly cites Syria s possession of chemical weapons, their program to covertly secure supplies to nuclear weapons, and their harboring of radical groups that posed a threat to the United States as warrants for American involvement in the Syrian Civil War (Fly). Fly also argues that the U.S. and its allies should establish protected zones around threatened cities although he neglects to describe what he means by that and seriously consider arming the opposition (Fly). • 11. Reaction Paper On Piezoelectric Ceramics Piezoelectric ceramics are inorganic nonmetallic materials that have the property of achieving conversion between mechanical energy and electrical energy [1]. This property is called piezoelectricity. Curie brothers first discovered piezoelectricity in 1880. Their experiment demonstrated the generation of electricity when well prepared crystals of quartz were under mechanical pressure. Inversely, a mechanical distortion occurred in response to the voltage applied to a piezoelectric material [2]. Typical crystals such as quartz, tourmaline, and Rochelle salt exhibit piezoelectric effect but they mostly exhibit only a weak piezoelectric effect, usually have low mechanical strength. Some ones are very sensitive to moisture and their operated temperature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Applications of piezoelectric ceramics can use both direct and converse piezoelectric effects. Generally, by applying compressive stresses, a charge or high voltage is generated due to the direct piezoelectric effect, while the converse piezoelectric effect leads to small displacements caused by applying an electric field to the ceramics. Acoustic and ultrasonic vibrations can be generated by an alternating field tuned at the mechanical resonant frequency of a piezoelectric device and can be detected by amplifying the field generated by vibration incident on the material, which is usually used for ultrasonic transducers. The flexor transducer consists of two piezoelectric ceramic thin plates poled in opposite directions and can be used in gramophone pick ups and ultrasonic accelerometers. The generation of surface waves enables filters and other devices to be made for use at frequencies exceeding 1GHz. Applications of piezoelectric materials have now expanded into many fields since the discovery of the effect by the Curie brothers in 1880. Significant progress in applications was made possible after the discovery of PZT ceramic materials. Piezoelectric devices can be divided into four general categories: generators, sensors, actuators, and transducers depending of what type of physical effect used. For all of these basic ... • 12. Evaluation of Impact of Desmopressin and Alpha1 Blocker... We evaluated the impact of desmopressin and α1 blocker tamsulosin combined therapy in treatment of LUTS/BPH patients with noctuia. BPH is a common disorder, which affect about 40% of men older than 50 years. Nocturia is a common manifestation of BPH (6) that is not only bothersome but can also have a marked impact on sleep patterns and decreases the QoL (9, 10). Different treatment modalities for LUTS/BPH have been used with success. However, treatment for nocturia has been reported to be less satisfactory than treatment of other LUTS and remains one of the most difficult LUTs to treat. Different treatment plans were assessed, either for nocturia by itself or that occurring in association with BPH. As, BPH is a potential risk factor for nocturia, α blockers are considered a potential treatment for nocturia (11). The α1 blockers are the most common treatment for LUTS/BPH and all currently available α1 blockers have similar efficacy and improve symptoms by approximately 35% and Qmax by 1.8 2.5 mL/s (12, 13). Many studies assessed the effect of α1 blockers, either alone or in combination with 5 α reductase inhibitors on nocturia associated with BPH. Tamsulosin OCAS 0.4 was evaluated in BPH patients with ≥ 2 night voids and was proved to significantly improve the mean IPSS when compared to placebo (14). However, the reduction in nocturnal voids was associated with a minimal difference between tamsulosin and placebo with a mean change of 3.1 to 2.0 night voids for tamsulosin and ... • 13. The Contribution of Patient Case Studies on our... Although it shares cognitive neuroscience s roots, cognitive neuropsychology has developed into a discrete discipline. While cognitive neuroscience studies neural organisation of the brain, cognitive neuropsychology concerns itself with the brain s functional architecture; Coltheart (2010) describes this as a distinction between brain and mind. According to, among others, Coltheart (2002, cited Coltheart, 2010) this makes cognitive neuropsychology a branch of cognitive psychology rather than neuroscience. Patient case studies have played a critical role in developing cognitive neuropsychology into a separate discipline, although data from case studies can support and even progress cognitive neuroscientific findings about neural ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Initially patients with brain damage were studied with the aim of understanding and treating their disorder. This was the case for Phineas Gage, who developed behavioural changes after a tamping iron passed through his brain in 1848 (Harlow, 1868, cited Jansari, 2010). However, progress in the field of cognitive psychology has enabled the development of complex theoretical models of cognitive function and improved research techniques. Advances in technology have given researchers the tools to view damaged brains before death and compare them to normally functioning, intact brains. As a result, a more challenging aim of cognitive neuropsychology has emerged: understanding and explaining normal cognitive processes. This is achieved by studying a deficit in cognitive function in a brain damaged patient and making inferences about intact cognition. For example, Shallice and Warrington s (1970, cited Hitch, 2010) investigation of patient KF with acquired brain damage showed that he had an impaired auditory digit span but normal intelligence and performance in long term learning and memory and understanding spoken language. This supported a dissociation between short term memory and long term memory initially proposed by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1971, cited Hitch, 2010). Thus a model of the intact memory system is developed or supported, which in turn explains memory deficits in patients with brain damage. Coltheart (2010) lists nine areas of cognitive processing, identified ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

A period which saw the territorial expansion westward towards the pacific, usually on populations who were seen as unable to govern themselves. One could say that this period partly motivated the war between Mexico (roughly between 1846 1848), a war that plays an important role throughout the book. By doing so McCarthy highlights and exaggerates the extent of brutality and hypocrisy that took place. McCarthy makes use of very explicit and horrific terms to describe the setting of the book, by doing this one gets the sense that he implies that humans are capable of such heartless and sinister acts, that ... • 15. Developmental Theories That Assist Social Workers Essay Developmental theories are integral to a social workers approach when working with children, and families as they help to guide and explain situations and behaviours. As social workers have an ethical and professional responsibility to their clients, they need to have an established set of guiding theories which underpin their practice. If they work without these theories, they could place their clients at risk of harm by practising from personal assumptions. They also help the social worker understand and manage these situations and to reach the desired outcomes. As suggested by Teater (2014), Theory is an essential ingredient in practice that guides the way in which social workers view and approach individuals, groups, communities and society (Chap 1, p.1). This report will identify and focus on three important developmental theories that assist social workers in their practice. These consist of work by Erikson, Bowlby and Piaget. Erikson s theory focuses on the model of life stage development; Piaget s theory focuses on the cognitive processes while Bowlby s theory focuses on attachment. Despite these theories representing different aspects of social science, they all have the same guiding principle of development. Once the social worker has identified the relevant theory required, they then use a model to implement the theory. This report will examine and discuss the Collaborative Family Work Model. When director Ridley Scott released this Crusade film in 2005, the film provoked widespread controversy from historians and disdain from film critics. People were either offended by the misrepresentation of the historical facts or of the movie s view of Christians. Nonetheless, there were people who praised the movie and thought it was spectacular. His image is the most historically accurate character of the movie. According to Ibn al Athir, Prince Reynald was one of the greatest and wickedest of the Franks, the most hostile to the Muslims and the most dangerous to them. As the movie shows, Reynald had a running rivalry with Saladin, raiding him and even apprehending his sister in a raid that provoked Saladin s invasion of Jerusalem. Even Christian historians agreed that Reynald was an evil figure. Another similarity involved the moral character of Balian in the movie and the actual Balian. In historical accounts, Balian is seen as the Christian who retains his wisdom and composure leading up to, and even after, the disaster of Hattin. The movie uses him as a template for an ideal knight, showing his journey to Jerusalem to seek forgiveness for him and his dead wife as an example of the pure motives of the Crusades. Balian characterizes the medieval ideas of knighthood and was a revered knight whose standing was equal to that of a king. The Patriarch of Jerusalem begged him to defend the city against Saladin s impending attack and he was the last defender of Jerusalem, just like in the movie. In this paper, the author will delineate the following developmental theories, Freudian, Object Relational, and the main components found in Attachment. During the latency stage, the child/client begins to imitate their behaviors, mannerisms, speech, and values of culture. For instance, this will initially allow the child to identify with their primary sexual characteristics towards the corresponding parent, leading to increased sexual desires and behaviors. Sexual latency begins from the age of six and lasts approximately five years. The child begins to associate with the same sex orientation and is able to distinguish appropriate behaviors in society, creating the superego. The genital phase begins from the ages of eleven to eighteen, which comprises of increased pleasure from masturbation and is experienced more frequently than the anal stage. Freud rationalized that all individuals are homosexual creatures; however, individuals do not experience homosexual behaviors or relationships. Throughout this stage, individuals will begin to formulate relationships with the opposite sex, which supersedes further development of the superego leading to individuation and autonomy (Garcia, 1995). In the next sections, the author will discuss the framework of attachment theory by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth since both theorists worked collaboratively with attachment styles and object relations theory. Atwood often expresses distaste for these altered organisms through her examples of pigoons and other genetically modified foods, which are still relatively new in our society. Despite more commonly occurring dislike from Atwood, she sees a few positives to GMOs. Although GMOs can increase food supply with higher yields, genetically modified organisms should be regulated to a certain extent for the sake of society s overall wellbeing. Because there has not been enough long term testing on GMOs to detect possible problems, everyone s health could be suffering. There are few laws regulating genetically modified organisms due to the fact that they have not been around for a long time. No long term testing has been concluded, therefore there is no scientific conclusion when it comes to the safeness of genetically modified organisms.
