through a specific quality that characters in both stories contain. That quality is the inability to make good
decisions. When faced with alarming or stressful situations, Eckels, Travis, and the townsfolk in the lottery,
make bad decisions. The townsfolk blunder through their life, blindly following the unjust tradition to stone
someone to death each year. Eckels and Travis are both cowards, and cowards tend to make bad decisions
because they are selfish. Both stories are connected by these cowardly people that make bad decisions. The
lottery townsfolk are put under pressure by not a person, but by tradition. Tradition makes them scared, and fear

In the short story, The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick, the symbol of the Shawl changes over the course of the story.
For Magda, the protagonist who is a baby, the shawl represents protection and nurturing. Once Magda dies,
however, the shawl represents mourning and emptiness for Rosa, Magda s mother. Similarly, in the short story,
Thank you, Ma am by Langston Hughes the blue suede shoes symbolize varying ideas as the story develops.
Initially, Roger, the protagonist, has a desire which is not met, to own blue suede shoes, the shoes therefore,
represent a feeling of lacking. Later in the story Roger is given money to buy the shoes, at which point the
shoes begin to represent his needs being met. Both Ozick and Hughes use accessories as symbols to illustrate
the protagonists transitioning between gaining and lacking proper nourishment.
The shawl provides Magda with sustenance and protection, which allows Magda to provide these same benefits
for Rosa. In describing the shawl, Ozick writes, It was a magical shawl, it could nourish an infant for three days
and three night . While the shawl provides Magda with all the nutrients she needs to survive, Magda helps Rosa
feel satisfied, despite giving her food rations to Magda. Rosa gains these crucial necessities indirectly from the
shawl through Magda, while Magda, on the other hand, benefits directly from the shawl. For both Magda and
Rosa the shawl, in providing them with the sustenance they need, symbolizes them having their basic needs
met.
Once Magda dies, however, the shawl symbolizes an emptiness and dearth of nourishment. During her life, the
shawl provides for Magda, which allows Rosa to reap benefit also, but once Magda dies, and the shawl no
longer provides sustenance. Ozick writes, Rosa drank Magda s shawl until it dried . The shawl dries up quickly,
in contrast to the constant, never ending nourishment that the shawl possessed prior to Magda s death. The
dried up shawl symbolizes Rosa s lacking. Before Magda died Rosa s needs were met through Magda,
however, now that Magda is gone Rosa no longer has those needs met. Although the shawl, initially,

Peer influence and the freedom enjoyed by college students have created a social dilemma due to the
emergence of behaviors that contravenes the social norm. Such behaviors, otherwise known as deviant
behaviors, are defined as a set of practices or approaches to life that go against the set standard or norms. The
growth of deviant behavior in college students has been associated with a number of biological, environmental
and social factors inherent within the institutions. Though behavioral deviance is affected by time and place,
college freshmen have adopted a fairly uniform sociological character.
Deviant behavior is directly responsible for poor academic performance, substance abuse and increased student
involvement in criminal activities. In most instances, students have engaged in activities such as binge
drinking, body piercing, hard substance abuse among other criminal activities as a result of deviance in their
behaviors. This literature review will analyze a number of scholarly publications and books on deviant
behaviors in college freshmen.

The Dangerous Effects Of Drunk Driving
The horror stories continue to increase, the lives of the innocent are silenced in one moment, and no highways
are safe to use to escape this trauma that has taken the country by storm. The trauma that has caused so many
lives and so much tax money is drunk driving. Drunk driving is not only dangerous for the driver of the vehicle,
but also for the passengers and everyone in proximity of the driver s path. If the penalties are raised for drunk
driving offenses, all of the horror stories of crashes on highways and the loss of innocent lives can be prevented
and the frequency of other alcohol related criminal activities would decrease dramatically because the

more, it is necessary to look at the next level. Espoused beliefs and values are goals, values, aspirations and
ideologies shared by everyone in an organization. Normally, these values are laid down by the leaders or
founders of the organization (Schein, 2010, p.25). However, espoused beliefs and values can sometimes be
mutually contradictory (Schein, 2010, p.27). Thus, the organization s culture is only understood just on the
surface level. Basic underlying assumptions, which are unconscious and taken for granted beliefs and values
provides for a deeper understanding of an organization s culture. Schein concluded that the essence of a culture
lies in the pattern of basic underlying assumptions (Schein, 2010, p.32). If the basic underlying assumptions are
not deciphered, it will be hard to understand the artifacts and espoused beliefs and values correctly. As Schein
(2010, p.32) himself had concluded, any group s culture can be studied at the three levels. The three levels of

the case with the Spartans. While training Spartans were hazed and beat by instructors only to make them

Yearning for the love of another is not an original subject for poetry. However, this age old theme is expressed
through the style of Petrarchan love in the poems Love, that doth reign and live within my thought and
Astrophil and Stella 1. Love, that doth reign and live within my thought, was written by Henry Howard, Earl of
Surrey in the mid sixteenth century (Greenblatt and Logan 386). Sidney wrote his series of sonnets entitled
Astrophil and Stella in 1580, describing his relationship with Penelope Devereux (Greenblatt and Logan 491).
Henry Howard in his writing of Love, that doth reign and live within my thought and Sir Philip Sidney in his
writing of Astrophil and Stella 1 collectively express Petrarchan concepts in their poems. Petrarch was a
fourteenth century poet whose writings were heavily influenced by the tradition of courtly love, however;
Petrarch altered the ideal of courtly love by removing the fulfilled meeting of the two lovers leaving the man
with an infinitely unfulfilled love. Henry Howard s and Sir Philip Sidney s situations are similar in that they are
both dealing with a vexing situation that is constructed around their feelings and expressions of love for a
woman. Both poets express these notions in their writings through their similar uses of meter, situation, and
Petrarchan structure.
Love, that doth reign and live within my thought is Henry Howard s version of Petrarch s Rima 140. Howard
keeps the construction of the Petrarchan sonnet the same
