The American Industrial Revolution
The American industrial revolution took place from the late 1800s into the 1900s. An industrial
revolution is a boom in industry and manufacturing. It requires a workforce, leaders, and most
importantly natural resources like coal, steel, gold, silver and lumber. Coal was a valuable resource
needed to power factories and transportation like the transcontinental railroad that spanned across the
US. After the transcontinental railroad was built in 1869, more coal was found in the west that could
be mined and then transported to the factories in the east. This led to the increase in material
production and made manufacturing easier and cheaper. However, when coal is burned it gives off
pollution so an increase in coal usage also impacted the environment. Additionally, working
conditions in the factories back then were unimaginable. Workers were overworked and around
dangerous machines at a young age.
After the industrial revolution production of materials increased. According to Document 3, steel
production in 1865 was 3,100,000 tons and in 1900 production increased to 9,000,000 tons, over triple
the previous amount. During this time period the Bessemer Steel Process helped to increase steel
production by using less coal and making steel cheaper. This is significant because during the
industrial revolution steel was used to build the railroads, buildings and plows. As a result of having
more steel, more railroads and buildings can be built for cheaper, improving transportation

Universal Basic Income Benefits
A Universal Basic Income (UBI) is essentially an idea in which the government pays all of its citizens
to prevent or reduce poverty and increase equality among the people. There are many factors that can
cause things to change in society some of these being moving up from a social class, or also making
the rich even more richer than they already are these and many more reasons are why a UBI would
essentially not be beneficial for americans. A UBI is financially irresponsible. Universal means
everyone gets it. Even in the richest societies like I have stated in the earlier sentence, if UBI was set
at a level to provide a modest but decent standard of living it would be unaffordable and lead to
increasing deficiency. To close the UBI budget black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nidess argues also pointing to the younger generation saying that young people who may learn new
skills to fulfil the types of jobs that are required from them would better be off happy getting paid by
the government to stay home and play video games instead of getting the skills to need a job, as long
as they get paid why should they bother trying. These and many points are the reason why a UBI
would not beneficial in general for the united states population. It may seem like it might have its
benefits as it is often framed as a tool for fighting poverty. Says James Surowiecki who has written
The Case of free money the article emphasizes why a UBI would be beneficial by listing the pros and
cons and comparisons of different countries. Basic income Enthusiasts disagree on a number of points.
For one thing, it s not actually a basic income if doesn t lift people above the poverty line. Unless the
number of unemployed individuals lowers there is no way that this basic income can ever really

Fences In The Barrio Summary
1. The Barrio is where low income Mexican families live and develop social relations with others
around them. It is a safe haven for many Mexican families even though it is very run down and lacks
certain necessities. The streets of the barrio are poorly paved and it even has a makeshift barbershop in
someone s living room. This, however, does not deter families from becoming close with each other.
While in the barrio, families forget about their hardships and gather together to celebrate what they do
have. Their gatherings usually take place on their front porches or in their brightly colored gardens. 2.
The difference between the fences in the barrio and in the Anglo community are that in the Anglo
community, fences are designed to keep people out where as in the barrio, they are more or less there
for decoration. The Anglo community has thick, impenetrable walls, built to keep the neighbors at bay,
which gives off the impression that visitors are not welcome. On the other hand, fences in the barrio
are rusty, wire contraptions or thick green shrubs, which give off more of a welcoming feeling. In the
barrio, neighbors do not feel any sense of intrusion when you cross them. Anglo fences do not allow
for friendly encounters with neighbors. 3. In Ramirez s view, economic need creates interdependence
and closeness. In the barrio, when you are poor, which most of the residence are, you will do anything
to help your family out, even if you are a kid. Children in the

Growing Interest of Business Ethics
Introduction:
There is an augmented interest in the business ethics for the past ten years. This escalating interest and
desire to understand better ethical performance and decision making led to the development of many
models research hard work especially about the ethical environment and ethical cultural concepts.
Many models concerning these concepts refers that ethical environment in effected by the individual
characteristics and appropriate factors like values, codes, rules, organizational form etc. One of the
most important factors in the organization explicit factors regarding ethics is leader behavior because
leaders are seen accountable for motivating moral values and ethical standards in their subordinates
(Dickson et al., 2001; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
More comprehensive and complex evaluation of the scales measuring ethical acuity was presented by
Vitell and Ho (1997). Just not liking a product and service would not be considered unethical. E.g. if
parking lot is full it is not considered to be unethical behavior of the business it will be when business
had misleading promises that convenient parking lot will always be available. Different corporate
scandals have established the necessitate of corporate interior codes enlargement to apply on the
members of Board of Directors and top administration in order to espouse standing, ethical
performance, and uprightness of companies (Aldama, 2003; Australian Stock Exchange, 2003; Higgs,
2003; New York Stock Exchange, 2003; OECD, 2004). It is become indispensable to affirm the
behavior of all other worker by adopting a code of ethics (Australian Stock Exchange, 2003;
Independent Directors Association and the Russian Institute of Directors, 2004; International
Federation of Accountants, 2007; Investment and Financial Services Association Limited, 2003; New
York Stock Exchange, 2003). Business ethics is one of the factors in the corporate social
conscientiousness (Carroll, 1991; Schwartz and Carroll, 2003), and corporate ascendancy has a

Jeanne Duprau s The People Of Sparks
Before reading The People of Sparks, I was very skeptical on how the book would compare to City of
Ember which was the first book in the series. But after reading the book I was very pleased with how
Jeanne Duprau developed the main characters by giving them realistic struggles like how Doon was
struggling to control his anger issues, and how Lina s curiosity and rash decision making still tended
to cause trouble. Which leads to the next reason why enjoyed the book which was because it stays true
to its original characters, and puts them in an entirely different situation. In the first book Lina and
Doon who are the main protagonists in the book had to find their way out of Ember because of its
depleting resources, and had to use their

Co-Rumination Research Paper
Co rumination is a common occurrence among friends. It is an easy strategy to fall back on in order to
try to cope with distress. In the moment it may feel like a form of stress relief, however, it prolongs
negative cognitions and emotions leading to increased levels of internalizing symptoms. Co
rumination does however, have the benefit of increasing friendship quality among co ruminators as it
helps build intimacy, understanding, and trust among the pair. Despite this common understanding,
studies have revealed some conflicting results, suggesting that there are moderators within the
relationship that have not yet been defined.. It may be that the individuals engaging in co rumination
greatly affect the outcomes; to try to uncover this, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most studies utilized the The Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (Brennan, Clark, Shaver,
1998) to assess attachment style. This scale rates the two dimensions of attachment, anxious and
avoidant, using a Likert Scale of 1 (disagree strongly) to 7 (agree strongly) to respond to statements
such as I often worry about being abandoned and I don t feel comfortable opening up to romantic
partners. It is common for descriptive statistics to reveal average scores of a sample for attachment
style to be around a midpoint or less. Consequently, many of the participants in the studies are likely
relatively neutral in terms of their attachment style. Whereas this may be representative of the
population at large, it may fail to give further understanding of how attachment style and co
rumination interact. A solution to this dilemma could be to screen samples first for individuals who
rank relatively high on insecure attachment to see how these individuals react to

Searle
In his paper Minds, brains, and programs , Searle makes an argument against the theory of strong AI,
which states that running a program is sufficient for understanding. This view on strong AI is very
closely connected to the theory of computationalism, which claims that the mind is like a computer,
and that thinking is something as simple as symbol manipulation and providing outputs in response to
corresponding input. Searle claims that this belief is unreasonable, and proves it with his Chinese
room example . Making it obvious that running a program, alone, is not enough of a basis for
understanding. However, while Searle is correct with his assumption, computationalists have many
arguments against his example, stating that he is clearly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

information about the world, but instead, when shown a question, simulates neurons and brainwaves
in the exact same sequence of synapses that would occur when a Chinese speaking individual would
experience when giving the response to the question. This neural processor would simulate a program
where the machine would be able to respond correctly to the questions asked without any outside
knowledge. This simulation would completely mimic the brain of a Chinese speaker, that does indeed,

consequently, the machine must speak and understand Chinese too (Searle

Indonesi A Model For Democracy
From being ruled by an authoritative government, Indonesia now has become a model for democracy
in Asia. Over the years, Indonesia has slowly made the transition to democracy. Its new presidential
election is clear evidence of this transition because the Indonesians chose to elect a common man to be
the president: an official who they thought would understand their struggles. Within 15 years,
Indonesia has transitioned from a bureaucratic authoritarian regime to a formal presidentialism. The
newly elected president has already taken steps toward implementing his reforms which consists of
pushing to cut down fuel subsidies, getting rid of corruption and encouraging new businesses to invest
in Indonesia by giving them tax incentives. These are clear signs that consolidated liberal democracy
in Indonesia has already taken place and that Indonesia will continue to be a democratic country in the
future.
Historians study history because they find it interesting and want to keep a thorough record of events.
However, political scientists study history in order to theorize and predict what caused certain events
and how history will have an impact on the future. One of the most important theories in political
science is Lipset s modernization theory. The first part of the theory states as societies become more
modern, they inevitably become more democratic. The second part of this theory is that democracies
lacking economic and cultural status tend not to last. Modernization only aids

The Benefits Of Dependence On Technology
In recent years, technology has taken huge steps forward. Things that past generations only dreamed
of have come to fruition. Undoubtedly, technology has presented the world with numerous benefits
and opportunities. With the aid of technology, the field of medicine has greatly improved. Answers to
all of life s questions lie just one click of tap away. Self driving cars loom large on the horizon.
Technology has made people s lives so much easier and better, or has it? While technology has
brought about many benefits, many problems have risen as well. Dependence on technology has
driven the world too far. Americans depend too much on technology because it affects cognitive skills

Personally, I have experienced this in my own life. Although I do not use social media, I have used
Google Hangouts on occasion. When using Hangouts, I have found myself chatting superficially about
random issues with my friends and not truly making friendships. At times, I have spent time with other
people, almost all of them texting away on their phones, oblivious to their surroundings. Also, people
tend to project a superficial image of their lives that makes their lives seem wonderful and perfect.
Sometimes, this can lead others to feel depressed that their lives seem so much worse. Relationships
encapsulate much more that what social media provides. Thirdly, technology presents dangers to
online security. Nowadays, the threat of cyberattacks exists in a very real way. Since technology
dominates culture, hackers can possibly access virtually everyone s personal information. Over four
billion people had their identities stolen last year according to the Business Insider (Cole). In addition,
sixty four percent of Americans have experienced some form of data theft, according to the Pew
Research Center (Olmstead and Smith). Many major companies, such as Yahoo and Target, have
fallen prey to hackers. While smartphones have made it much easier to accomplish tasks on the go,
many people do not take adequate steps to best ensure security. According to a survey by

Irene Helmock And The Modern Version Of Sherlock
The new version of Sherlock by the BBC is similar to the old novels in many ways. It is still about the
great detective Sherlock, and his friend, Watson solving mysteries together. However, it uses the items
in the story, the elements of the story, and its cultural narrative to move the stories into the 21st
century. In the Modern Version of Sherlock, there are many gadgets and objects that were not present
in the 19th century. There many examples of these gadgets in the tv show. The most obvious one is the
cell phone. In both of the episodes we watched in class, cell phones played an important role in the
overall plot. In A study in Pink the pink cell phone is what leads Sherlock to the murderer. In A
Scandal in Belgravia, the compromising photos and the secret message about the bond plane were
contained in Irene Adler s cell phone. Sherlock uses the smartphone to trace the location of the
murderer, and then John Watson uses the phone to trace Sherlock. Without the phone, Watson would
not have known Sherlock s location, and because of that would not have shot the ... Show more

The most obvious example of this is in the story, A Scandal in Bohemia, and its TV counterpart, A
Scandal in Belgravia . In A Scandal in Bohemia, Irene Adler is a singer, which is viewed as extremely
undesirable. It is so bad that the king of Bohemia hired Sherlock to try and get it back. He even travels
to 221b Baker Street, where Sherlock and Watson lives in disguise, because he was so afraid of being
identified. This shows the cultural belief in the 19th century that a singer, or any type of performer is
undesirable, and should be avoided, especially by the upper class. In A Scandal in Belgravia , Irene
Adler is a Dominatrix, which now, in the 21st century, is viewed as undesirable. The member of the

By the time I started the first grade of school, my interest of our past had already sprouted enough to
be easily cultivated by teachers and docents on school field trips to museums and local historical sites.
These enthusiastic journeys were shaping my personality to learn more about different cultures. I was
fortunate to take a holiday in Europe between my sophomore and junior year of high school. More
importantly the trip began and ended with a stop in New York. Once there I could see firsthand, from
the Bowery to Harlem, all the different cultures I had only read about. I was delighted to take my first

It wasn t long into the school year when my third grade teacher realized that I hardly knew how to

adapted my behavior to make it through class without notice, but had not yet figured out how to pass
her reading comprehension quizzes. After gently questioning me about it, she sent me to the school
counselors to get tested for learning disabilities. As she suspected, the tests came back with multiple
diagnoses: dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, and a lack of short term memory. Being a third
grader, those words had no meaning to me, but little did I know how they would force me to create
adaptations that prepared me for Washington University Law School.

Tone In The Use Of Force
Have you ever read a book or a story and wondered how would you feel if the story was told by
someone else. Such as if it was told by a monotone person as opposed to an extremely energetic
person. Your perception of the story would be completely different. Take a very serious book, for
example, with a deep meaning. If it is told in a jokingly way, most people won t take it as serious and
they will think of it as a comedy. On the other hand if a comedy book told in a serious manner and
monotone, it wouldn t be as funny or it won t be funny at all. That is what the tone of a narrator can
do, it can make the story interesting or boring, it can make it sad or happy. In The Use of Force, the
narrator made the story seem dark and emotionless. In some cases, he even made the story seem a bit
weird like when he says, ...an unusually attractive little thing , and as strong as a heifer in appearance.

everything that is going on. The fact that he does this also contributes to the weirdness and darkness of
the story. Since the story is told from his point of view, we don t know the thoughts or actions of

The Crazy Radio Why can Irene hear the conversations going on throughout her building, but no one
can hear her through the radio? The Enormous Radio, by John Cheever was set shortly after World
War II. Irene and Jim Westcott love listening to music, and one day their radio got ruined and Jim had
to go buy a new one. The radio has something wrong with it, it allows them to hear other
conversations. The Enormous Radio made it seem that other people could hear the people in the

Cheever used Irene to expose the American life and comforts of the middle class life, but it cannot
protect the Westcott s against the evil from within themselves, or in the world around them (The
Enormous Radio 1 2). The insanity of Irene has caused for her marriage to suffer to where it can t be
fixed. She became dependent on the radio to tell the gossip that was going on in the building that her
insanity got the better of her, and when she turned on the radio at the end of the story when she turned
on the radio she could no longer hear the conversations. This shows that if someone gets too involved
into something, that insanity can be lost if it is taken too far. Works Cited

My Personal Educational Philosophy Essay
Educational Philosophy Essay My personal educational philosophy is a combination of perennialism
and essentialism, which leaves me uniquely well armed to teach my subject of choice: History.
History, viewed as a whole, is a monument to the achievements of Man. It is unchanging, though new
aspects may be found or brought to light, and it can be viewed from many angles, it is an unchanging
truth that what happened, has indeed happened. Through a thorough and guided exploration of this
subject, students can learn many of the essential skills they will need to succeed later in life. My desire
to teach and the development of my particular philosophy can be relatively easily derived from my
own, personal, history. My earliest memorable connection with the subject that defines me came from
semi monthly trips to my great grandparents home in Jacksonville, TX. Every trip we would pass a
large stone monument to Sam Houston, a man who was essential to the development of the state of
Texas. After enough questions about his life my parents took us on a trip to San Antonio, Texas, where
the Presidio San Antonio de Bexar sits The Alamo. Here I began to delve into military history, and the
complexity of stories being written from both sides of the trenches and firing lines. Reading those
stories, and the experiences of the men in them, I realized that they were experiencing feelings similar
to ones that regular people experience on a daily basis: anxiety, depression, self doubt, and

The British Broadcasting Corporation is synonymous with British culture and is one of the most

BBC s general manager when it was created in 1922 and its director general in 1927 when it became a

The BBC took a number of steps to comfort the public. During the war, the BBC s hours increased

In mid 1940, the BBC s news readers started identifying themselves so listeners could be certain they
were hearing BBC news. Yorkshireman Wilfred Pickles became a legendary reporter with his
distinctive northern accent ( 1940s. ) Not even the headquarters of the BBC was spared during the

in the blast. Bruce Belfage, who was reading the nine o clock news at the time, continued as if nothing

asked to write Vs everywhere they could to represent victory for Allied forces. Unfortunately,
Germany used the V for Victory against Britain to represent an ancient German war cry, Viktoria . The

Essay about The Function of the Shawl in Ozick s The Shawl
The Function of the Shawl in Ozick s The Shawl Suffering becomes a way of life for Magda, Stella
and Rosa, as they struggle to survive during the Holocaust. During these trying times, some cling to
ideals and dreams, while others find unusual vessels of hope like the shawl to perdure in their austere
living conditions. Although the shawl becomes a source of conflict between Magda, Stella and Rosa in
this narrative, it also serves as a pivotal force and a motivational factor. In Ozick s The Shawl , a small

Excerpt #7 Malvolio is observing a letter deceptively written by Maria in the handwriting of Olivia in
this moment in the fifth Scene of the second Act of Twelfth Night. This excerpt is humorous in the fact
that the letters that Malvolio points out spell out a derogative term for female genitalia. He even says
the line, and thus makes she her great P s , to make a joke about urination. The line this is my lady s
hand also implies the act of masturbation. The fact that Malvolio is a serious, old butler contributes to
the humor of this passage. This excerpt just uses contextual information in order for Shakespeare to

This analogy is a strong comparison that the play s readers can relate to and also teaches a wise lesson
in tolerance. Before going into his anecdote, the Duke says, When remedies are past, the griefs are

upset over it. The Duke then goes on to say, By seeing the worst, which late on hopes depended / To

Examples Of Masculinity In The Pursuit Of Happyness
Masculinity in The Pursuit of Happyness
Nowadays, men should break down traditional norms like taking care of family, which women are
supposed to do. The Pursuit of Happyness, directed by Gabriele, is a movie based on a true story of an
African American man named Chris Gardner, a multi millionaire investor and a motivational speaker.
Gardner is not only a persistent, hard working, and confident man, but also an emotional and a
responsible father who played both masculine and feminine roles as a single parent. Thus, he is a clear
example that proves the negative stereotype about African American men is wrong. There is a
stereotype that African American men are easy to give up on working and raising a family. Due to

important characters of men (393). Through the movie, it is easy to realize that Gardner was really
confident since he never showed any fear in bad situations where people mostly feel nervous. As an
illustration, when attending an interview of an internship course, he did not dress formally, even worse

Dental Hygiene Importance
As stated by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Each year, more than 30,000 new cases of
cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx are diagnosed and over 8,000 deaths due to oral cancer occur.
(CDC). Most adults are unaware that they have periodontal disease or gum disease, this occurs
because they do not maintain routine checkups with their dentist. When we insert food and other
bacteria into our mouths, it affects our teeth and gums. We need routine dental checkups and cleanings
throughout our lives. Dental checkups usually involve x rays, cleanings, and the examination of the
mouth.
Dental health is one of the most important matters in our lives. Without proper dental tonicity, people
can obtain dental problems, which can be as severe as death. In order to maintain proper dental care
go to your dentist every six months. It is also important to change your toothbrush regularly, floss, use

Leadership Is Something That Should Be Paid
I believe that leadership is something that should be earned. Whoever is the most qualified and
passionate should be the person who leads, not the most popular. I believe that having integrity and
expecting it at all times from your team is the best way to operate. I believe that leaders cannot always
be the good guys in every situation. I believe that it is important to find people who will help you most
achieve your goal, but ones who are loyal, passionate, and want to grow personally. Mutual respect in
any situation will allow for people to speak their minds, even if it is difficult. I want to help my team
members find their passions and help them succeed outside of our organization. I believe that
leadership is about encouraging others to buy into your values, and cheering them on when they gain
recognition for their work. Being a leader was never something that I had to think about. I knew that
leaders existed and that they were important to how businesses and companies ran their operations,
but other than that I never consciously decided that I was going to be a leader when I was younger. As
I grew up and found myself getting more involved with my community, I realized that I was acting
like a leader even though I didn t feel like I was acting any different than my normal self. My
demeanor, leadership learning moments, and mentors all helped me to find my leadership voice , and
it has allowed me to grow into who I am as a leader. My parents have had

Dendroctonus Ponderosae
In the pacific northwest, there exists an insect the size of an apple seed. It feeds on the phloem of
trees, leaving them mutilated, their bark eviscerated and leaking sawdust. Victims of choice include
lodgepoles, western white pines, and ponderosa, but any gymnosperm will do. For the mountain pine
beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae, the invasion means reproductive success. For the tree, it means slow
death.
Though the beetle chooses the victim, it is the fungus it carries, Grosmannia clavigera, that delivers
the fatal blow (Safranyik and Carroll 2006). Working in tandem with the insect, the fungus spreads
across the surface of the trunk, dismantling all defenses. So refined is this relationship that the beetles
store the fungus in specialized containers. Sap, which trees use to wash out offending beetles,
crystallizes, forming a pitch cap characteristic of infected trees. Cut off from nutrients, the host begins
to wither away. It can be a slow process, with some trees standing, in limbo, for up to a decade. ...

ponderosae looks much like other members of Coleoptera. Its eggs are deposited in the inner bark of
trees, incubating for an average of two weeks. It undergoes four stages of metamorphosis, meaning its
larval form dissolves into itself and, while still incased, begins to sprout wings, with the fully
developed adult emerging only to mate and feed. Hardened wing plates known as elytra help
distinguish adults from other insects, and an appetite for wood helps distinguish the 600 species of
bark beetle from other beetles. Unlike many tree invaders, however, which preferentially target the
weak and diseased, D. ponderosae increasingly besieges healthy

Odysseus And Moses In The Aeneid
Moses in Exodus and Aeneas in the Aeneid are the closest to each other with regarding leadership.
Both men were perceived to be the best leaders for their people without thinking of their own personal
gain. Both of these leaders began their missions when their people were put into serious danger, which
put both of these men true leadership abilities to the test. Aeneas and Moses were two different types
of leaders when it came down to it. Moses and Aeneas both have to deal with the concept that they
both have no sense of free will . They are both being constantly being toyed and played with by their
different version of Gods. Truly, neither one of them are leaders because they are being lead by their
personal gods way of living and doing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Aeneas is already made to be a powerful heroic figure by nature. At the end of the Aeneid he
temporarily loses his heroism and his pietas. The burning of Troy guards his ability to perform like a
natural hero he is. I can tell that his heroism will be an inner struggle within himself. Aeneas feels like
he is no longer in control of his own destiny. This makes him more of a hero than a leader. He has to
deal with battle everywhere he goes. Aeneas shows his true heroism and leadership when he choses
his duties as a leader over his love for Dido. He has to tell Dido he is duty bound (973). Aeneas shows
compassion and love, which are some rare traits in heroes. To me, this makes him more of a hero
because he can show his emotions. He felt very guilty and thought he was the reason she took her on
life. Moses is more of a leader than a hero to me. Moses started out as an outsider because of where he
was raised. The same people who pushed him to the outside were the same people he had to lead. He
wads able to push past the barriers of being scared and the feeling that no one would listen to him. He
was able to lead the people and gain their trust from the Lord s word. Some would say that Moses is a
hero because he split the Red Sea and led the Israelites to freedom. Moses had his doubts and fears
when he is asked to do the job of the Lord intended in him to do. Good leadership is the ability to
bring people to peace. Moses exemplifies instruction in his words and

The Three Types of Annoying Shoppers
Tires squeal across the hot asphalt; exhaust fumes fill the air. Innocent shoppers leap to safety as cars
circle the neighborhood grocery store lot in search of the ideal parking spot. Engines revving.
Adrenaline rushing. The driver s sole mission is to obtain a white lined rectangle of pavement before
entering the race known as shopping. As a safety precaution, competent and considerate shoppers
should be aware of the distinct character traits of the three annoying types of shoppers: Hurry Harry,
Suburban Sally, and Picky Pete. Knowledge of their parking lot to checkout stand habits increases the
chance of avoiding a head on collision.

Words are finger painted in the dust on the back window above the bumper stickers declaring, My
child is an honor student and Vacation at Disneyland. Sticky, diapered youngsters spill from the van to
scramble for a rusty cart which desperately needs a front end alignment. Suburban Sally, in a loose
sweatsuit and pink rollers, unravels a grocery list equal to any childÕs letter to Santa. She skillfully
maneuvers the cart through the maze of shoppers, braking without warning, to comparison shop or to
threaten her loud bunch of food guzzlers. With the strength of a two ton truck, she steers her cart to the
finish line. As the cashier rings up her purchases, it is time for her to make one last lap around the
store for a forgotten item. Customers sigh as she pulls out coupons and rebates to offset the sticker
price. She writes a check and calculates the difference before leaving. A good set of brakes and plenty
of tabloids to read are necessary when shopping behind Suburban Sally.
In comparison to her absent minded habits, Picky Pete, the third type of annoying shopper, appears
flawless. Sunlight shines off his latest BMW parked across three spaces farthest from the store; his
political statements boldly expressed on the shiny chrome bumper: Don t blame me, I voted for Bush

The Poisoner s Handbook By Deborah Blums Best Selling Book
The film that I am reviewing, title The Poisoner s Handbook, is based on Deborah Blums best selling
book, of the same title, which reflects on the most notorious cases between the years of 1918 and 1959
that were handled by Charles Norris, the chief medical examiner for New York City, also known and
described by his peers as the father of forensic toxicology in America, and Alexander Oscar Gettler,
toxicologist with the Office of Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York, such as the fatal
radium poisoning of the factory workers who contracted radiation poisoning from painting watch dials
with self luminous paint at the Orange, New Jersey watch factory around the year 1917 and other
cases that involve dangerous poisons, like arsenic, methanol, lead, carbon monoxide, denatured
alcohol, radium and thallium. Their renowned work led to tougher regulations by the government and
the creation of the Food and Drug Administration. The film depicts how the average American s
medicine cabinet, in the early 1900s, was a treasure chest of dangerous poisons that could make you
ill, put you in a coma, and even kill you. These poisons were readily found in health tonics, depilatory
creams, teething medicine, and cleaning supplies.
In the early 1920s, medical examiners and coroners were appointed by the mayor and were
responsible for investigating every suspicious death in New York City. The position was a political
one and anyone, including musicians, painters, milkmen could

Short Summary Of The Sniper
In The Sniper , a cold hearted depiction of war, Liam O Flaherty follows a young Republican sniper
through a typical day amongst the callous bloodshed. The story opens with the Sniper, bathed in soft
light emanating from the moon, drawing smoke from his cigarette. For a while there is the gentle
illusion of normality, however, before long, the silence of peace is shattered by an appearance of an
armored car and enemy informant. Driven by his need to survive, the Sniper shoots them down,
without even once wondering about their intentions. As he eliminates the threat, another enemy sniper
catches him in the arm with a carefully aimed bullet, forcing him to retreat behind the roof. Reminded
constantly of the death waiting for him by the corpses of the people he killed, the Sniper grinds his
teeth and overcomes his pain, formulating a plan that would allow him to survive. Before the sun
rises, the Sniper tricks the enemy Sniper into believing him dead. When the enemy sniper stands up in
fabricated victory, the Sniper takes him down, ignoring his bleeding arm and screaming conscience.
Before he can decide to report back to his commander, the Sniper is hit with a strangely compelling
need to find out who the enemy Sniper was. Risking his life and dodging numerous bullets from a
machine gun, he gets off the roof and reaches the body on the ground. When he flips it over, the face
that stares back at him is the lifeless mask of none other than his brother. On this

Of Oedipus Rex s Influence On The Number 23
Oedipus Rex s Influence on The Number 23
Julia A. Meade
University of Maine
Oedipus Rex is one of the first tragedies in theatre history to be recorded, and to have survived for
present day society to appreciate. Written by one of three ancient greek playwrights, Sophocles, this
performance has paved the way for many other pieces of work (Brockett Ball, 2014). One such work
from contemporary times, The Number 23, a movie starring Jim Carrey, appears to follow a similar, if
not the same, plot as Oedipus Rex. Both pieces of work start in the middle of the trouble; The play
starts in the middle of a deathly illness that has spread across the kingdom of Thebes, which Oedipus
is ruler of, and the movie starts with Walter reading a book that seems oddly similar to his own life.
Oedipus is tasked with finding out who murdered the previous king, since the god Apollo told Creon,
Oedipus brother in law, that the murderer is the abomination in Thebes that has caused the illness.
Walter becomes obsessed with the main character of the book he received from his wife, whose life
revolves around the number 23. He tasks himself with finding out more about the author of the book,
since he believes the book was somehow written about his own life. Both of these characters become
investigators to find the truth. In Walter s journey he finds more and more details of the book that fit
details in his own life. In the book are characters Fingerling and Isabel whom, both,

If you only switching to a tankless gas hot water heater to save some money, then you will most likely

On the other hand, many people have found that natural gas tankless heat the water faster than regular

to see whether a particular model is suitable for your needs.
If you want to save a considerable amount of money, then you should consider installing the tankless

of experience with DIY home improvement projects and the tools needed for the job, you can actually

need to connect the water supply, hot water supply and gas supply line to the heater, and you will want
to test the heater out before putting the cover

The Black Art Movement And The Black Arts Movement
The Black Aesthetic is a form of cultural expression that solidified itself during the Black Arts
Movement that was meant to exemplify black pride and reformation, culture, and community. Many
works that arose out of the Black Arts Movement depicted the role and responsibilities of the black
artist. Ralph Ellison claimed in his essay, The World and the Jug that he did not want to be seen as a
Negro artist but rather just an artist. This was understandable because he wanted to be known for his
talent rather than as a figurehead for his people but since then, there has been a lot of significant
historical and cultural development to this argument. After The World and the Jug was released in
1964, we had the death of Malcolm X in 1965 which was the catalyst for the Black Arts Movement to
truly begin. Black artists became very insistent upon invoking change through their work and
expressing their blackness unapologetically and it began to show. There was a change in mindset
where these newer artists wrote about their blackness and instances occurring in black communities
simply because it was a defining part of who they were, especially as women were given a voice in the
movement and were able to incorporate a new viewpoint despite the evident hyper masculinity. Yes,
they were artists, but they were black artists. Two poems that specifically exemplify this are Poem
about My Rights and Poem about Police Violence by June Jordan. These poems are able to depict

Customer Satisfaction is one of the main topics rises recently. Before years there was a revelation of a
customer service to concentrate on customer, to treat with him in a better way, to please and fulfill his
demands of the customer. In order to achieve that, researchers analyzed the customer population then
took random samples and after that generalized the results and came with procedures to treat and

The reality of Customer Satisfaction is in the eyes of the beholder the customer. And all about how to

According to Business Dictionary definition it is the degree of satisfaction provided by the good or

Or it is the number of customers or percentage of total customers, whose reported experience with a
firm, its products, or its services (ratings) exceeds specified satisfaction goals. (Paul W. and others,

Customer satisfaction can be experienced in a variety of situations and connected to both goods and

Satisfaction also is based on the customer s experience of both contacts with the organization and

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams: The Evolution of Management Thinking
M.Samson and R.Daft, (2012) Management: Fourth Asia Pacific Edition, Cengage, pp.79 80
Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, founders of MG+BW, have had the mantra Break the rules wherever
possible! from the beginning. Following the outdated rules governing the upholstery manufacturing
industry when they started their company in 1989 would have put them on a path to destruction. Few,
if any, management philosophies taking hold in the larger business world were on the minds of the
manufacturing executives. Industry wide, supply chain management and customer service was a joke.

MG+BW uses solid kiln dried hardwoods, logged using sustainable methods, to construct their
frames. Gold and Williams are convinced that using cheap materials only hurts companies in the end.
Pay factory workers by the hour.
To meet delivery promises to customers, MG+BW needed to run a more efficient operation so that the
company instituted an incentive based pay structure at its Taylorville, North Carolina factory. Most
production is done by hand, so instead of hourly wages, factory employees get paid for each piece
they complete. When they work faster, everybody wins. Quality assurance meetings involving
representatives from the factory floor are held regularly to identify process improvements.
Full employee benefits are options.
By industry standards, MG+BW s approach to benefits is pretty unusual. Apparently offering full
benefits to employees and generous benefits to spouses, partners and other family members is
downright radical. For its employees, MG+BW also built a health conscious café, a gym and indoor
walking track, and the first on site daycare ever to exist in the furniture industry. College scholarships
are awarded annually to the employee s children as well.
Cater to the masses
Uninterested in catering to the lowest common denominator, MG+BW was the first in its industry to

  • 2. The American Industrial Revolution The American industrial revolution took place from the late 1800s into the 1900s. An industrial revolution is a boom in industry and manufacturing. It requires a workforce, leaders, and most importantly natural resources like coal, steel, gold, silver and lumber. Coal was a valuable resource needed to power factories and transportation like the transcontinental railroad that spanned across the US. After the transcontinental railroad was built in 1869, more coal was found in the west that could be mined and then transported to the factories in the east. This led to the increase in material production and made manufacturing easier and cheaper. However, when coal is burned it gives off pollution so an increase in coal usage also impacted the environment. Additionally, working conditions in the factories back then were unimaginable. Workers were overworked and around dangerous machines at a young age. After the industrial revolution production of materials increased. According to Document 3, steel production in 1865 was 3,100,000 tons and in 1900 production increased to 9,000,000 tons, over triple the previous amount. During this time period the Bessemer Steel Process helped to increase steel production by using less coal and making steel cheaper. This is significant because during the industrial revolution steel was used to build the railroads, buildings and plows. As a result of having more steel, more railroads and buildings can be built for cheaper, improving transportation ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Universal Basic Income Benefits A Universal Basic Income (UBI) is essentially an idea in which the government pays all of its citizens to prevent or reduce poverty and increase equality among the people. There are many factors that can cause things to change in society some of these being moving up from a social class, or also making the rich even more richer than they already are these and many more reasons are why a UBI would essentially not be beneficial for americans. A UBI is financially irresponsible. Universal means everyone gets it. Even in the richest societies like I have stated in the earlier sentence, if UBI was set at a level to provide a modest but decent standard of living it would be unaffordable and lead to increasing deficiency. To close the UBI budget black ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nidess argues also pointing to the younger generation saying that young people who may learn new skills to fulfil the types of jobs that are required from them would better be off happy getting paid by the government to stay home and play video games instead of getting the skills to need a job, as long as they get paid why should they bother trying. These and many points are the reason why a UBI would not beneficial in general for the united states population. It may seem like it might have its benefits as it is often framed as a tool for fighting poverty. Says James Surowiecki who has written The Case of free money the article emphasizes why a UBI would be beneficial by listing the pros and cons and comparisons of different countries. Basic income Enthusiasts disagree on a number of points. For one thing, it s not actually a basic income if doesn t lift people above the poverty line. Unless the number of unemployed individuals lowers there is no way that this basic income can ever really ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Fences In The Barrio Summary 1. The Barrio is where low income Mexican families live and develop social relations with others around them. It is a safe haven for many Mexican families even though it is very run down and lacks certain necessities. The streets of the barrio are poorly paved and it even has a makeshift barbershop in someone s living room. This, however, does not deter families from becoming close with each other. While in the barrio, families forget about their hardships and gather together to celebrate what they do have. Their gatherings usually take place on their front porches or in their brightly colored gardens. 2. The difference between the fences in the barrio and in the Anglo community are that in the Anglo community, fences are designed to keep people out where as in the barrio, they are more or less there for decoration. The Anglo community has thick, impenetrable walls, built to keep the neighbors at bay, which gives off the impression that visitors are not welcome. On the other hand, fences in the barrio are rusty, wire contraptions or thick green shrubs, which give off more of a welcoming feeling. In the barrio, neighbors do not feel any sense of intrusion when you cross them. Anglo fences do not allow for friendly encounters with neighbors. 3. In Ramirez s view, economic need creates interdependence and closeness. In the barrio, when you are poor, which most of the residence are, you will do anything to help your family out, even if you are a kid. Children in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Jeanne Duprau s The People Of Sparks Before reading The People of Sparks, I was very skeptical on how the book would compare to City of Ember which was the first book in the series. But after reading the book I was very pleased with how Jeanne Duprau developed the main characters by giving them realistic struggles like how Doon was struggling to control his anger issues, and how Lina s curiosity and rash decision making still tended to cause trouble. Which leads to the next reason why enjoyed the book which was because it stays true to its original characters, and puts them in an entirely different situation. In the first book Lina and Doon who are the main protagonists in the book had to find their way out of Ember because of its depleting resources, and had to use their ... • 7. Co-Rumination Research Paper Co rumination is a common occurrence among friends. It is an easy strategy to fall back on in order to try to cope with distress. In the moment it may feel like a form of stress relief, however, it prolongs negative cognitions and emotions leading to increased levels of internalizing symptoms. Co rumination does however, have the benefit of increasing friendship quality among co ruminators as it helps build intimacy, understanding, and trust among the pair. Despite this common understanding, studies have revealed some conflicting results, suggesting that there are moderators within the relationship that have not yet been defined.. It may be that the individuals engaging in co rumination greatly affect the outcomes; to try to uncover this, I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most studies utilized the The Experiences in Close Relationships Scale (Brennan, Clark, Shaver, 1998) to assess attachment style. This scale rates the two dimensions of attachment, anxious and avoidant, using a Likert Scale of 1 (disagree strongly) to 7 (agree strongly) to respond to statements such as I often worry about being abandoned and I don t feel comfortable opening up to romantic partners. It is common for descriptive statistics to reveal average scores of a sample for attachment style to be around a midpoint or less. Consequently, many of the participants in the studies are likely relatively neutral in terms of their attachment style. Whereas this may be representative of the population at large, it may fail to give further understanding of how attachment style and co rumination interact. A solution to this dilemma could be to screen samples first for individuals who rank relatively high on insecure attachment to see how these individuals react to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Searle In his paper Minds, brains, and programs , Searle makes an argument against the theory of strong AI, which states that running a program is sufficient for understanding. This view on strong AI is very closely connected to the theory of computationalism, which claims that the mind is like a computer, and that thinking is something as simple as symbol manipulation and providing outputs in response to corresponding input. Searle claims that this belief is unreasonable, and proves it with his Chinese room example . Making it obvious that running a program, alone, is not enough of a basis for understanding. This neural processor would simulate a program where the machine would be able to respond correctly to the questions asked without any outside knowledge. This simulation would completely mimic the brain of a Chinese speaker, that does indeed, speak and understand Chinese. • 10. Indonesi A Model For Democracy From being ruled by an authoritative government, Indonesia now has become a model for democracy in Asia. Over the years, Indonesia has slowly made the transition to democracy. Its new presidential election is clear evidence of this transition because the Indonesians chose to elect a common man to be the president: an official who they thought would understand their struggles. Within 15 years, Indonesia has transitioned from a bureaucratic authoritarian regime to a formal presidentialism. The newly elected president has already taken steps toward implementing his reforms which consists of pushing to cut down fuel subsidies, getting rid of corruption and encouraging new businesses to invest in Indonesia by giving them tax incentives. These are clear signs that consolidated liberal democracy in Indonesia has already taken place and that Indonesia will continue to be a democratic country in the future. Historians study history because they find it interesting and want to keep a thorough record of events. However, political scientists study history in order to theorize and predict what caused certain events and how history will have an impact on the future. One of the most important theories in political science is Lipset s modernization theory. The first part of the theory states as societies become more modern, they inevitably become more democratic. The second part of this theory is that democracies lacking economic and cultural status tend not to last. Modernization only aids ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Personally, I have experienced this in my own life. Although I do not use social media, I have used Google Hangouts on occasion. When using Hangouts, I have found myself chatting superficially about random issues with my friends and not truly making friendships. At times, I have spent time with other people, almost all of them texting away on their phones, oblivious to their surroundings. Also, people tend to project a superficial image of their lives that makes their lives seem wonderful and perfect. Sometimes, this can lead others to feel depressed that their lives seem so much worse. Relationships encapsulate much more that what social media provides. Thirdly, technology presents dangers to online security. Nowadays, the threat of cyberattacks exists in a very real way. Since technology dominates culture, hackers can possibly access virtually everyone s personal information. Over four billion people had their identities stolen last year according to the Business Insider (Cole). In addition, sixty four percent of Americans have experienced some form of data theft, according to the Pew Research Center (Olmstead and Smith). • 12. Irene Helmock And The Modern Version Of Sherlock The new version of Sherlock by the BBC is similar to the old novels in many ways. It is still about the great detective Sherlock, and his friend, Watson solving mysteries together. However, it uses the items in the story, the elements of the story, and its cultural narrative to move the stories into the 21st century. In the Modern Version of Sherlock, there are many gadgets and objects that were not present in the 19th century. There many examples of these gadgets in the tv show. The most obvious one is the cell phone. In both of the episodes we watched in class, cell phones played an important role in the overall plot. In A study in Pink the pink cell phone is what leads Sherlock to the murderer. In A Scandal in Belgravia, the compromising photos and the secret message about the bond plane were contained in Irene Adler s cell phone. My Trip To Harlem By the time I started the first grade of school, my interest of our past had already sprouted enough to be easily cultivated by teachers and docents on school field trips to museums and local historical sites. These enthusiastic journeys were shaping my personality to learn more about different cultures. I was fortunate to take a holiday in Europe between my sophomore and junior year of high school. More importantly the trip began and ended with a stop in New York. Once there I could see firsthand, from the Bowery to Harlem, all the different cultures I had only read about. I was delighted to take my first bite of a real pastrami sandwich amongst Orthodox Jews at Carnegie s Delicatessen. Being verklempt is how I would describe ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 14. Washington University Student Personal Statement It wasn t long into the school year when my third grade teacher realized that I hardly knew how to read. She would watch as I flipped through the pages of a book, imitating the act of reading. I had adapted my behavior to make it through class without notice, but had not yet figured out how to pass her reading comprehension quizzes. After gently questioning me about it, she sent me to the school counselors to get tested for learning disabilities. As she suspected, the tests came back with multiple diagnoses: dyslexia, auditory processing disorder, and a lack of short term memory. Being a third grader, those words had no meaning to me, but little did I know how they would force me to create adaptations that prepared me for Washington University Law School. Such as if it was told by a monotone person as opposed to an extremely energetic person. Your perception of the story would be completely different. Take a very serious book, for example, with a deep meaning. If it is told in a jokingly way, most people won t take it as serious and they will think of it as a comedy. On the other hand if a comedy book told in a serious manner and monotone, it wouldn t be as funny or it won t be funny at all. That is what the tone of a narrator can do, it can make the story interesting or boring, it can make it sad or happy. In The Use of Force, the narrator made the story seem dark and emotionless. In some cases, he even made the story seem a bit weird like when he says, ...an unusually attractive little thing , and as strong as a heifer in appearance. • 17. My Personal Educational Philosophy Essay Educational Philosophy Essay My personal educational philosophy is a combination of perennialism and essentialism, which leaves me uniquely well armed to teach my subject of choice: History. History, viewed as a whole, is a monument to the achievements of Man. It is unchanging, though new aspects may be found or brought to light, and it can be viewed from many angles, it is an unchanging truth that what happened, has indeed happened. Through a thorough and guided exploration of this subject, students can learn many of the essential skills they will need to succeed later in life. My desire to teach and the development of my particular philosophy can be relatively easily derived from my own, personal, history. My earliest memorable connection with the subject that defines me came from semi monthly trips to my great grandparents home in Jacksonville, TX. Every trip we would pass a large stone monument to Sam Houston, a man who was essential to the development of the state of Texas. After enough questions about his life my parents took us on a trip to San Antonio, Texas, where the Presidio San Antonio de Bexar sits The Alamo. Here I began to delve into military history, and the complexity of stories being written from both sides of the trenches and firing lines. Reading those stories, and the experiences of the men in them, I realized that they were experiencing feelings similar to ones that regular people experience on a daily basis: anxiety, depression, self doubt, and ... It feeds on the phloem of trees, leaving them mutilated, their bark eviscerated and leaking sawdust. Victims of choice include lodgepoles, western white pines, and ponderosa, but any gymnosperm will do. For the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae, the invasion means reproductive success. For the tree, it means slow death. Though the beetle chooses the victim, it is the fungus it carries, Grosmannia clavigera, that delivers the fatal blow (Safranyik and Carroll 2006). Working in tandem with the insect, the fungus spreads across the surface of the trunk, dismantling all defenses. So refined is this relationship that the beetles store the fungus in specialized containers. After The World and the Jug was released in 1964, we had the death of Malcolm X in 1965 which was the catalyst for the Black Arts Movement to truly begin. Black artists became very insistent upon invoking change through their work and expressing their blackness unapologetically and it began to show. There was a change in mindset where these newer artists wrote about their blackness and instances occurring in black communities simply because it was a defining part of who they were, especially as women were given a voice in the movement and were able to incorporate a new viewpoint despite the evident hyper masculinity. Yes, they were artists, but they were black artists. Two poems that specifically exemplify this are Poem about My Rights and Poem about Police Violence by June Jordan. Violations of certain safety and environmental rules will get employees banned from government property thereby resulting in job loss or relocation and put the organization as a whole under a microscope regarding business practices. The administrative department is responsible for maintaining these training records. In addition to maintaining the training records the HR staff must be able to produce the proof of a particular training session with only a short notice. This is because the company is only authorized a certain amount of personnel to begin with so in order for the organization to get the best bang for its buck some of the lower level job positions were combined with higher level positions and employees in the lower positions received promotions. This change helped to offset the cost of hiring new talent to fill those upper level positions and the laying off of lower level employees in positions the company no longer found useful. Throughout this process the human resources department along with other department managers were responsible for ensuring that the new job descriptions accurately portrayed the work the needed to be done and that employees had the proper certifications to perform the tasks required in the new position. Mine Management Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams: The Evolution of Management Thinking M.Samson and R.Daft, (2012) Management: Fourth Asia Pacific Edition, Cengage, pp.79 80 Mitchell Gold and Bob Williams, founders of MG+BW, have had the mantra Break the rules wherever possible! from the beginning. Following the outdated rules governing the upholstery manufacturing industry when they started their company in 1989 would have put them on a path to destruction. Few, if any, management philosophies taking hold in the larger business world were on the minds of the manufacturing executives. Industry wide, supply chain management and customer service was a joke. Total Quality Management (TQM), let alone Customer Resource Management (CRM), was nowhere to be ... For its employees, MG+BW also built a health conscious café, a gym and indoor walking track, and the first on site daycare ever to exist in the furniture industry. College scholarships are awarded annually to the employee s children as well.
