Institutions of higher education often struggle to find strategies that successfully engage students in
learning. In the article Faculty Work, Student Success, Colleen Flaherty attempts to address this
problem by analyzing the benefits that undergraduate research has on students and faculty.
However, she points out that faculty have a hard time balancing the demands of focusing on
teaching students while keeping up with research, without sacrificing the quality of one or both
pursuits. Flaherty uses the Collegeof New Jersey, as an example of an institution that took a risk and
did a complete reformation of their curriculum focusing on the teacher scholar model and
undergraduate research (Flaherty, 2014). Since the implementation of the program in 2004, it had
benefited both students and faculty alike such as increased retention and recruitment rates and
increased student faculty interactions (Flaherty, 2014). The new curriculum lightened the faculty
teaching requirement to three courses a semester than were focused on undergraduate research and

diseases to be socially constructed. History of medicalization from the 19th century onward, using
the French example, as a frame of reference. The working hypothesis of the author is that modern

I am writing to you on the behalf of Florence Kelley, a student I have taught since 1890. She
hopes to further her education at United States University. Kelley has always been extremely
hard working, empathetic, and compassionate, and strongly believes in the rights of all people,
especially women and children. A perfect example of this is when she said, For the sake of the
children, for the Republic in which these children will vote after we are dead, and for the sake of
our cause, we should enlist the workingmen voters, with us, in this task of freeing the children

This considerate mindset is apparent in her entire work ethic and philosophy. When Kelley was a
young girl, her father, US Congressman William Darrow Kelley, exposed her to many social
rights issues, such as women s suffrage and abolition (Carson and Bonk). Talking about these
issues from a young age inspired her to introduce many reforms and change others lives for the
better when she became older. Many of her successes can be contributed to a lifetime of discussing
politics at the dinner table. Had she not had these experiences from a young age, she may not have
