Formal magazine proposal
I will be creating a rock music magazine for my course work task.
Magazine title: after doing my mind mapping of ideas and
asking my target audience their opinions, I have chosen to name
my magazine ‘Amplify!’.
Chosen genre: The reason I have chosen my genre ‘rock’ is
because I think it is a creative and different genre of music for me
to work on. As I don’t usually listen to rock music therefore it will
give me a challenge. I think that rock is a very unique genre of
music that is targeted to many different audiences as it includes
so many different sub genres e.g. Indi rock, heavy metal rock,
classic rock etc… Although it may require a certain taste, now in
the 21st century, people are able to express themselves in
different and dramatic ways.
Target audience profile:
My target audience will be both boys and girls, but predominantly
girls ages 15-30. They would be middle class as I think they have
more leeway in their societies to listen to rock music as it is quite
a different and dramatic genre of music. The reason I have chosen
to target girls/women is because I wanted to make this edition of
my magazine about girl artists and bands therefore females may
find these types of articles more appealing than males do.
Example person:
The type of person that would fit my target audience would be:
A middle class young woman called Brooke approximately around
the age of 18. She has a part time job in a music store (e.g. HMV)
to help keep her financially stable as she is still in education (she
is studying music, business and media). In her free time she likes
to play the drums and listen to rock music whilst doing her
college work or revising. In the future she wants to be in a rock
band playing the drums. This is one of the reasons why she likes
reading rock magazines so much as they inspire her own work
and creations. She is a free willed person and does not have a
religion as she is an atheist. She likes to live life to the full and just
be herself.
Initial ideas about the front cover:
I would like to take a medium close up shot (from the shoulders
upwards) of a female artist who is the lead singer in a rock band
against a white or light coloured background to make her make-
up stand out. I would like my title ‘Amplify!’ to be in large, bold,
red letters so that it stands out off of the page. I have chosen to
use the colour red as it is striking and dramatic which suits my
genre of work. My main cover line will say ‘The Evil Eva’ and I
would like to give that an eerie and dramatic red font as well. At
the top of my cover page I would like a cover line saying ‘Poster
Party’ with three images of the girl band and the main artist to the
right of it. Down the left hand side of the page I would place
another image of the band that has been taken especially for this
edition with a cover line talking about their new album, ‘new
album? All revealed!’. Underneath that I’m planning to put
secondary images relating to the rock star make-up tutorial inside
the magazine, ‘How to look like a rock star!’. Then underneath
that the barcode and edition near the bottom of my front cover, I
am planning to bullet point my other cover lines stating what else
will be inside my magazine.
Initial ideas about the contents page:
In my contents page I would like to have quite a simple but bold
3D looking white font saying ‘CONTENTS’. As my title is going to
be white, I would like to have a medium long shot of one of the
other girl band members (maybe the guitar player or whoever is
next in popularity) posing against a black background. Near the
top left of the page I will write the page number of the girl bands
double page spread so that the audience will know where to go
straight away to find that article. Then to the right of that image I
would like to create a deep red coloured box with the editorial (in
white font). Underneath that I will make a white box where I will
insert my page numbers and information. In my contents
information I am going to give each different sections of the
magazine their own sub titles like ‘reviews’, ‘concerts’, ‘news’
etc… This way my audience will have a better idea where to find
certain articles their specifically looking for. Finally underneath
the contents information, I will insert the other three posters of
the girl band with the cover line ‘more amazing posters’ (and the
page number. All of this I have tried to keep within my magazines
colour scheme red, black and white.
Initial ideas about double page spread:
I would like both pages of my double page spreads to have a white
background. On the left hand page I would like to write my title in
large bold red letters that takes up about half of the page. Then I
would like to start writing the article underneath in a black
simple font.
Initial ideas of photographs:
My main cover photograph would be of a pale brunette teenage
girl (approximately 17) who is wearing quite dark eye make-up
and lipstick to make her look dramatic and park of a rock band,
preferably with curly hair. I would like her to be wearing a black
or red top so that it fits in with my colour theme.
My contents page I would like it to be of a different girl with
blonde hair (to give it a contrast) I will take a medium long shot
so that we can see her outfit too. I would like her to have curly
hair so that she can pose with it and so she looks vibrant and
dramatic. I would like her to have dark eye make-up preferably
purples and reds with dark coloured lipsticks to give her that rock
look. I would like her to wear jeans and a rock top (possibly
rolling stones, guns and roses etc… branded tops)
I want to take about six more images for my posters for the front
cover and contents page. These images I would like to create a girl
band of like 3 or 4 girls wearing rock clothes posing maybe with
instruments as well, like a guitar. I want there to be different
looking girls like brunette, blonde etc… I would like to have them
all wearing dark make-up so that they look like a real rock girl
band. I will take different images like of them all together, in pairs,
different poses, close up shots of individuals, medium close ups.
