With baggy shirts and bomber jackets the boys of Black Roses come
bouncing into our studio immediately creating a feeling of the cool,
legendary band they’re becoming. We want to ask so many questions.. Like
WHAT is going on with their mysterious social media campaign. GOOD
NEWS for the confused and the eager - we find out!
THEY’RE VERY HAPPY TO BE IN THE RAW STUDIO.
Cam Heldens (VOCALS/ GUITAR) “When I was younger ; I never thought we’d
make it this far. If you would’ve told me in 2010 we’d be releasing our
third new album in 2017, I would’ve been amazed. I would never of
assumed so many people would want to hear our music. I think the fact
we did a world tour with The Libertines in 2016 really kick started our
fame. Our band started in 2006- and its now 2017! Our ambition is
definitely to be one of the greats like the artists we love.’

‘These are just a few of artists who we love, it was really flattering when
Pete Doherty posted a cover of Hard, its really cool he acknowledged our
music. Also, when our song Black Smile was used in an Apple Music advert
with Alex Turner it was a really big deal. He’s one of the biggest stars in
the world. There are thousands of other songs they could have used. And
we got to thank him too - electronically.‘ Bands never played in their
hometown, so Josh could only learn songs he loved in his guitar lessons.
‘I could take a song to (my guitar teacher) and he could show me on the
spot how to play it.’ Josh remembers. Josh unintentionally revealed his
biggest secret of faiiling his A-Levels yet sticking to his guitar lessons all
through his education. ‘ Music is always cyclical, and trends come and go.
And right now rock music in general is on the rise.’ explained Josh.
MASON IS PUMPING UP THE VOLUME AGAIN!
‘Between the last album and 107, I wrote some new stuff between tours.
It was just me and a guitar. I remember reading an interview with (UK
indie god ) Morrisey, who said you can tell a good song if it stands up to
being played on an acoustic guitar. Cam and I are working on a song idea
for a TV theme song now. Its just fun; it feels like summer camp.’ Says
the drummer (Ollie) . He then revealed he almost wasn’t in the band, he
nearly left for a solo opportunity in just 2006!
The Black Roses’ tour is fuelled by sugar; in catering they would eat
doughnuts, cakes, oreos, pizza and chocolate… AND (ironically) everyone’s
working out all the time, (All bar Ollie who is apparently the laziest
person on the tour) its likely to catch Cam using battle ropes after
running 10 miles on his treadmill in his dressing room, possibly for a new
romance ( we couldn’t get any more out of him!) Plus, we compared fit
bit stats with Mason Turner. On tour there is also a Vegan Chef, while
Josh and Ollie are veggie, Cam Heldens is a strict vegan. So that he
doesn’t starve, he has his own personal chef, who cooks up whatever he
fancies for him everyday- his favourite meal is gluten free penne pasta
with Bolognese.

2. AND WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR CREEPY CAMPAIGN?
They created a website called whereisjstone.co.uk in which you have to
solve the Josh Stone mystery. There are leaked crime scene photos,
leaked podcasts from Josh Stone and some show him having a creepy
encounter with a hooded figure…
THIS HAS BEEN A LONG TIME COMING .
You might remember back in April when Black Roses tweeted about a
mix-up they had involving Room 107 of a Southampton hotel. This is all
part of the story on the website about Josh Stone going missing. ‘It
feels like it did when the band first started.’ Explains Mason. ‘ We
wanna work, we wanna go out and play shows, everybody is working as
hard as they can, everybody is happy to stroll onstage and play music,
we all hang out together, we joke together….. there’s a real unity in
the band right now.’
AND WHAT ARE THEY UP TO NEXT?
More touring! ‘ There’s no egos, no fronting , we’re just 4 guys trying
to make some noise and have a bit of fun.’ Ollie says. And the good
news is you’ll hopefully get to see them sooner rather than later. ‘ It
is like being back at school, the gigs all the time and excitement.’
