This document analyzes a double page spread from a rock magazine. The spread uses typical conventions like columns of text and a large central image. The image shows a female model with a serious expression, dark makeup, and revealing clothing to portray a "rock chick" image and appeal to both male and female readers. The layout, colors, and fonts are also analyzed in terms of their symbolic meanings and how they represent the band and target demographics.

1. DOUBLE PAGE ANALYSIS
I have chosen to analyse the double page spread from the magazine NME. The magazine has been
created using the typical codes and conventions of a double page spread for a rock magazine
having the text in columns with a large picture taking up a page and large title.When looking at
the facial expressions the model has used a serious expression looking directly into the camera,
almost directly towards the audience, using the uses and gratifications theory to allow them to feel
a personal relationship with the artist as they feel the artist is directing her attention to them. The
facial expressions connote dark or mysterious due to the model not smiling and looking directly
into the camera yet having some of her hair covering her face being a full fringe and pulled
forward with curls to convey a rocky edge side. Her make up around her eyes is slightly darker
than typical therefore being seen as rock chick and edgy, connoting a dark or dangerous side to
her linking to her stance. The body language of the model is sitting down side on with her hand
reached to her knee, this body language is open and inviting readers in to read the article making
the model seem more ‘friendly’ and ‘sexy’ rather than aggressive which is typically how men are
portrayed. The clothes she is styled in are a relation to Madonna who is known for her music
highlighting that this artist will also want to be as big as Madonna and uses her as an icon. The
body suit she is wearing is revealing due to cutting of high up her leg which appeals towards
makes yet doesn’t offend the female audience as it is portrayed to be an icon for women. The
black leather connotes rock as well as relates to the audience due to these people wearing leather
jackets and dark clothing. Moreover, the coned cleavage reinforces Madonna. The heeled boots are
also relate to rock due to the edge, harsh look upon the eye compared to a pair of dolly shoes
which would be largely seen in pop magazines as it relates to the audience.
The type of shot used is a long shot that has been taken in a studio highlighting the magazine is
serious and somewhat staged compared to the other rock or indie magazines which use live shots.
The font style used is formal with one could argue as intelligent wording to highlight the
demographics of the audience, being those between the ages of 16-25 that enjoy reading about
music. This is due to expletives as well as a specific rock idiolect which highlights these readers,
read the magazine monthly and will understand the magazine yet again using the uses and
gratifications theory as it feel personal. The heading is placed at the top of the page which is ‘USA’
yet the heading unlike others is faded into the background. This linking with the red colour used
within the box due to red being a colour on the American band which enforces the band are trying
to break into the American music industry and aim towards the American audience. The red colour
has connotations of passion, anger, love or hatred. The shade of red used for is a bright and bold
red which can be seen as not gender specific yet having a slight preference by the young male
gender, between the ages of 16 to 25, in this case the colour connoting America, and passion
aiding in the sexualisation of the model. The phrase ‘got the love’ is also a large part of the article
due to it being a well-known lyric from their song which can be seen as an inside information there
for those who read the magazine regularly or enjoy this type of music. The typical people that
would by the magazine would be A, B, C1 stereo typically being more intelligent. They would like
to socialize; this is because of the language used being specific to particular people that enjoy
music.The colours used on this double page spread show to be very dull and dark, this is effective
because the parts of which are meant to be a main focus, such as the red, white and blue, are
what catches your eye when you look at the page. The colours that surround Florence help to
portray her personality as well keeping the colours simple doesn’t clash and become unappealing.

2. which means it is all involved in the same focus. Italso makes it feel a lot more professional
because the colours have been thought to complement each other. The columned text gives
the reader aneasy structure to follow as it is consistent and easy to read.The masthead is written
in aseductive way with an italic writing which matches theway in which the image is portraying
amessage to the reader. The style of how it is set outand over writes ‘USA’ is stylish and goeswith
the overall theme that is trying to beportrayed through the double page spread.The little paragraph
which introducesthe text has a direct link to both the imageand the masthead. Having Florence
sat on top of thecloth which is meant to signify the USA flag,indicates that she has literally got
America ather feet. This also shows she has conqueredher career. In the little piece of text,
hername is written in blue, which links with the USA theme.
This double page spread uses an equal balance of image and text this means the images used
are enough detail to allow the reader to understand the band. The text explores the band in a lot
more detail as to whatthey are like which explains thepictures. The text is all in columns and
thismakes it very easy for the reader to followand is well organised being a code and conventions
of a typical music magazine.The artist in the foreground enforcesthat he is the main member, or
main singer. This is because we see him fully and he is in front of everybody else slightly being
closer to the audience almost. The band is looking at the camera which will make the reader feel
moreinvolved and makes them feel like the band is looking at them directly. Not onlythis, but the
fact that they are all pulling different faces to the camera, reveals more abouttheir personality and
how they can all be shown as different people even though they all inthe same band, having
contrasting facial expressions yet they members are not smiling highlighting it is a serious
magazine based on metal or heavy rock. The use of all the members pulling different faces, it lets
the reader feel thatthey are getting more involved in learning about the band members using the
uses and gratifications theory of personal relationships.
The clothes that they havebeen styled in portrays what the band is like and the genre they are in
due to the mismatch in clothing, contrast in colours and individual look highlighting this and is
different and unique.The colours used are can read a bitabout their personalities just fromlooking
at what they are wearing.The bright colours that the memberat the front is wearing might
showthat he is the most outgoing one who is the most well-known. Theaudience for thisKerrang
magazinewould be people whoare more interested inthe heavy music such as people from the
agesof 16-25 as the topics they talk aboutis most relevant to thatage rangeas well as the article
having expletives which are for the more mature age groups as it can be seen as aggressive. The
colours used are dark being ametaphor for the heavy music thatthey produce and the ‘dark’ side of
rock. It represents anegative mood which can be portrayed to the reader through these colours.
The red representspassion, which is ametaphor for the passion that theyhave for the music. The
text is a contrast to a typical magazine as the background is black with white text meaning it is
unique and a very specific genre. The text stands out within this article background because of the
contrast in complimentary colours. It is broken upfrom the rest of the text by the red text. This
allows the reader to beable to tell the difference of where each paragraph ends.

3. The image is of Lady Gaga in black and white effect because itthen creates a more vintage effect
to the image highlighting she has a major role within music and her genre. It givesher the look of
an old film starcommenting that she is already amassive star and is so well known. This image of
her portrays that she wishes to be seen as an icon as well as sexy for the male audience as well as
being comfortable in her own body.The image is of her looking straight at the cameraand with her
lips slightly parted being seen as a sexy pose as well as it being a little smile to draw the reader in
as they feel they aredeveloping a relationship with her. Her large hair and dark make up suggests
she is a glamorous artist who takes care in her appearance as well as it aiding her in her career.
Lady Gaga is wearing little clothing with large accessories which connotes power and wealth. Also,
it shows us her personality as outgoing and bold. From her not wearing any clothe confirms to the
reader she is a confident woman who is happy within her ownbody. The necklace is spread out
across her chest so that she is notrevealing anything, but at the same time drawing readers to
look at her chest so that it makes her seem sexy.
The layout is completely differentto any other one I have seen due to the large red letter in the
back ground having her initial in red to highlight her passion and dominance. In this one we see a
wholepage is taken up by the large image of Lady Gaga. Theother page is covered with text with
no images at all.The text is still written in columns but there is a lotmore of it to be read
highlighting it is intellectual and based on her music.The colour scheme is simple black and white
with bright red to connote her impact on the music industry with her music as well as her passion
for music.
