Folic acid, also known as vitamin B9, is involved in maturation of red blood cells and synthesis of compounds needed for fetal development. Adequate intake before and during early pregnancy helps prevent certain birth defects. It is absorbed in the small intestine and deficiency can cause anemia or increased dementia risk in older adults. The recommended daily intake is 400 micrograms, and sources include leafy greens, beans, eggs and meat. While generally safe, rare allergic reactions are possible.
