This short film is about mental illness and people who take their own life which includes a real story about someone
who did. The subject of this short film is a sensitive subject and it has been taken very seriously in this video. The
subject of this short film is aimed at an older audience and would not be suitable for younger viewers around the age
of 11 or 12.
At the beginning of the short film the creator has stated clear facts about the subject. This shows that the creator has
put in a lot of research and wants to inform the audience about this subject. While the narrator is stating these facts
about the subject, the creator has used clips of a town center will people living their lives. This could symbolize that
anyone could be hiding a mental illness or suicidal thoughts. Someone could look fine on the outside, but on the
inside, they could be feeling suicidal which is effective.
During the film there is an interview telling a true story about a person who took their life. This shows the realism of
the people involved and how it has effected them. The creator has created some dramatic recreational clips of the
story to help the audience picture what the narrator and the girl being interviewed is saying. However, they have not
added a lot of thee types of clips as it would be graphic for the viewer.
The clips shown in this video are pretty simple. The beginning sequence is of a busy town and has no kind of speed
change or editorial techniques used. The sequence would o looked more captivating if the clips were a time lapse
instead of keeping it at the normal speed.
As well as the lack of range of clip types, there is also not a big range of editing techniques used such as transitions and
clip effects which would have made the overall product more captivating and eye catching. The creator has used
however a color change to make the overall color more dark and purple which goes with the theme, the title and the
story that is given to us in the short film.
There is an element of text such as at the beginning title and helpful information at the end for the audience about
charities and helplines that specialize in the topic of the video. The text could have been in a different font as the one
they have chosen is a little basic. I understand why they chose the main font color to be white as if they chose a

The Conjuring true story – what really happened:
EdgeOfNightFall
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-rrlwyD1uI&t=32s
This video is about a popular horror movie called The Conjuring and how it was based on a true story.
The creator explains how the film has used the real facts of the story to make an effective horror film
and how the real victims of the haunting has been effected.
The creator has done a lot of research to create this video. He has gathered a lot of facts and images
about the film and the true story including clips of the real family that were attacked by this unknown
force of evil. He’s collected a lot of assets to compare the silver screen to the reality of the films
concept which has been used effectively and has made the purpose of the video clear. The creator
has mentioned that one of the daughters created a book about her experiences with the paranormal
activity and I would of liked to see a quotation from this book or maybe an interview from one of the
victims so the audience can understand how they felt and how this experience has effected these
lives today.
The effects that the creator has used in the video during editing has been used well. Although he
didn’t use a lot of visual effects during editing, this may have helped the quality of the video as you
don’t want to use a lot of effects because the product may look too cramped and quick. The effect I
like the most is the filter they have put on the visual assets to make it look like an old film on a
projector which adds to the theme of the topic as the story as the events happened in the 1970’s.
I also liked what they did with audio assets. The narration is the main asset for the audio with quiet
subtle music in the background which also fit to the theme of the video and some simple audio
effects. The creator also knows when to add music and when to not music so the audience focuses
on the narration when the narrator is talking about something important.

Film Theory: Blair Witch’s Secret Killers:

The title card sequence shows different scenes from movies which illustrates and outlines
certain objects or cameras in the shot with a white outline with written notes around the
outline with questions or explanations on it to show that the creator is a film theorist or
reviewer which I think Is a good way to show the audience what kind of content you
create.
This theory video has a wide range of comedy added. This theory I about a horror movie
which is relly scary and this theory (if it is a confirmed theory) adds to scare factor but the
comedy and silly cut aways take that factor away. However the use of comedy lightens the
video so its not overly scary but in my personal opinion I would of not used that element
when talking about a horror movie. Compared to other film theories about horror films,
this style does stand out from the rest but I feel like the creator is focusing more on trying
to be funny than explaining the theory fully.
There is a lot of information put into this 17 minute video due to quick transitions and fast
talking. This is good because the audience would get bored if it was too long or they
wouldn't know everything about the theory if it was too short.
The audio used in this video is used well. The narrators voice, sound effects and music stick
to the topic of the video especially the soundtrack as it adds eariness to an already creepy

Why The Shining Creeps Us Out:

The creator of the video uses a lot of visual effects to help explain the topic of the video.
The narrator uses a range of green screen shots to insert himself into the scene that he is
talking about which helps us know that we're not just seeing a random clip from the
movie which is not in relation to what point is being said in the audio. The creator also
uses graphics and illustrations to further explain his point. When he is talking about one-
point perspective he uses black and white lines in the corridor scenes to help the
audience understand what one-point perspective is. The narrative along side the visual
assets is also used well. The creator has used a simple background music throughout the
piece and hasn’t changed it just so the audio isn't too cramped with assets. There are
barely to no audio effects as well to make the narration the main asset to focus on. The
narration is also very clear and understandable. The narrator hasn't used big fancy
words, and if he has, he has explained what he is saying. The narrator also compares this
movie to other movies to explain why this film isn't like others and adding another point
to the topic by explaining why this film is so creepy. There is some comedy used in this
piece just to lighten up the video and making it watchable for all ages but keeps it to a
minimum with some short liner jokes so it doesn't take away from the main idea of the
Research summary
• The videos I have researched have a lot of
different qualities to make them unique. Some
have illustrations and moving images in them t
explain the topic of the video where as some just
have a voiceover and still images and videos. One
has a great use of greenscreen whereas the other
videos just use voiceovers. They all did not use a
lot of effects for both visual and audio to make
sure its not over crowded and busy which is a
good idea to take note of for my factual video.

Editor's Notes

  • #10 Think about a subject you could write about, a design style you could work in and why you would want to do it. Think about content. What different visual and written elements would you include? Initial ideas can be documented in any way that you would like. Mind maps are ok, but they don’t work for everyone. If you prefer to simply write your idea, do that. If you want to combine text and images, do that. As long as you communicate a potential idea, the method is up to you. Present you idea and also some justification for your choices. You can link this back to your research.
