the State Bureau of Investigation, in 2012, approximately 36,000 juveniles were arrested in the
state of North Carolina.
i.Over 11,000 of these arrests were made for index crimes.

battle a turning point in the war. Many American soldiers lived in a world where their lives
could be over in a matter of seconds. Most of us are not able to comprehend the mental state of
the soldiers during battle. In the novel The Thin Red Line by James Jones, Private Robert Witt,
the protagonist, experiences war for the first time. Throughout the novel, he sees and does many
things which drastically change him emotionally and physically. The settings of the naval ship
at sea, the island of Guadalcanal, and his home in New Guinea have a different effect on the
character development of Private Witt. First of all, the experiences Witt receives on the naval
ship, affects his character development. Witt never dreamt of participating in a war to fight in a
constant battle of life or death. In the past, Witt enlisted into the US army with hopes of helping
his village financially back in Melanesia. At the time, Witt was too afraid and not mentally
prepared for the experiences he would face. As a result Witt went AWOL (Jones 107) and left for
his home village in Melanesia. Three years later, he makes the choice of going to back to the army,
yet he is immediately placed into the war battlefront.
