Essay On Electronic Cigarettes
Conventional cigarettes emit tobacco smoke, which is the most significant air quality tissue.6 The
most harm aspect of tobacco smoke is the combustion of chemicals.4 It has been declared a Group 1
carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.5 Carcinogens are continuously
emitted through a smoking session and is exposed to smokers and nonsmokers alike.4 Smoking in
public buildings has been banned in the United States and Europe to improve indoor air quality.6
As an alternative, electronic cigarettes (e cigarettes) were developed.6 An electronic cigarette is a
battery, microchip, red LED that acts like a burning cigarette tip, a cartridge with a liquid, and a
vaporization chamber.1 It delivers nicotine, propylene glycol, and/or ... Show more content on

Electronic cigarettes and cartridges are unregulated and vary from company to company. This results
in electronic cigarettes with different designs, materials, combustion voltages, and liquid cartridge
concentrations.4 Other differences include an open or closed system used in an e cigarette and the user
s individual puffing topography.3 All studies provided in this paper conclude that electronic cigarettes
produce lower levels of pollutants, making electronic cigarettes safer for the user, bystanders, and the
environment when compared to conventional cigarettes. Schober et al. reports further research needs
to be conducted to address long term effects of using electronic cigarettes. Oh et al. reports further
research should be done on the various nicotine dosing, flavors of liquid cartridges, and various
voltages. Oh also remarks that these studies use different brands and types of electronic cigarettes that
have different doses of liquid cartridges. Ario et al. reports that second hand exposure should be
further investigated to find possible health issues. Colard et al. reports that further studies should be
done to report concentrations in different locations, with different distances from the user and the
bystanders, and with different vaping behaviors (puff volume, frequency, and inhalation). Bertholon et
al. reports that the toxicity of long terms will vary based on the additives and contaminants in
propylene glycol and/or glycerol. O Connell et al. reported that there are limits in the studies because
there were different methods used, in addition to the different designs and manufacturing of electronic
cigarettes, and because some findings were not replicated. O Connell et al. proposes focusing on
consumer exposure and using different product types in different settings with different volunteer

Sherman Alexie Indian Tribe
According to the Webster Dictionary, a tribe is a social division in a traditional society consisting of
families or communities linked by social, economic, religious or blood ties, with a common culture
and dialect. In Sherman Alexie s novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, in the
chapter Remembering Arnold list all the tribes that he belongs to. He says, I was a Spokane Indian. I
belonged to that tribe. But I also belonged to the tribe of American immigrants. And the tribe of
basketball players . . . (Alexie 217). His two most important tribes that he identifies with are the tribe
of poverty and the tribe of boys who miss their best friends. These two tribes are talked about
throughout the entire book and got him into a few sticky ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But just like Arnold we all can relate to being a part of a tribe. As for me, I am a part of the tribe of
teenage girls, tribe of being adopted and the tribe of lovers of tattoos and piercings. However, my most
important tribe that I belong to is the tribe of only daughter and just like Arnold, the tribe of girls who
miss their best friend. Having to face being the only daughter, being poor, and missing a best friend
can really shape you as a person whether it be good or bad. Throughout majority of the book Arnold
talks about how much he misses his best friend Rowdy, and wants nothing more but to get their
friendship back. Rowdy and Arnold were longtime friends. Rowdy would protect and watch after
Arnold because everyone on the rez picked on him for having disabilities. Arnold would be save as
long as Rowdy was around, because everyone feared Rowdy. Arnold thought they would be friends
forever, that was until Arnold announced that he would be leaving the rez to attend Reardan High
School. Rowdy hated him for that. He felt like Arnold was betraying him by leaving him for the whit
people at his new school. In fact, when Rowdy realized that Arnold was serious about leaving the rez,
he screamed and

The Best Route For Nuanced And Equitable Access For...
It is almost a conundrum to consider the best route for nuanced and equitable access for information. I
think on some level the words nuanced and equitable contradict each other. These words can be
understood as existing on a continuum. On one end there are the nuanced (i.e. more precise or expert)
classification systems which tend to serve the skilled searcher very well, and the novice searcher very
badly. Unless you are familiar with the controlled vocabulary you are unlikely to find answers. On the
other end of the spectrum there are equitable classification systems which, in the struggle to make the
search easy and possible for all, lose the nuance needed to find what is specifically sought. Search
engines for example, are broad and constrained by very few search rules. The knowledge gained from
a search engine can be found by nearly anyone with basic knowledge. The results returned from many
poorly constructed searches, however, are generic and the number of results can be so broad as to be
meaningless. So which is better? To have an access system so stringent that a layperson will have a
difficult time retrieving results? Or have an access system so open that anyone can retrieve results, but
the results may not be as relevant as they need to be? As usual, the answer lies in finding a happy
medium. I believe the best route for creating access to cultural heritage information, a way to have the
best of both nuance and equity, is to employ a system that has a public

Essay on Hector Tobar s The Tattooed Soldier
Downtown Los Angeles is one of the busiest commercial centers in the United States. However, the
city holds two groups of people in different economic level the homeless and the working class.
Hector Tobar frequently includes the landscape of the setting in downtown Los Angeles in The
Tattooed Soldier. The novel is about two immigrants from Guatemala who have moved to Los
Angeles. The protagonist, Antonio, takes a revenge on the antagonist, Longoria because he murdered
Antonio s wife and son when he was a Guatemalan soldier. Tobar applies a number of metaphors to
connect the buildings and freeways in downtown to Antonio s position in the city. Buildings,
freeways, and shadows are metaphors for Antonio s economic and social status. ... Show more content

The stock exchange building represents material life and the windowless building represents security.
Antonio can observe these buildings that illustrate an ideal life, but he belongs to none of the qualities
that are associated with these buildings. He is exposed to all the danger of the city with no money at
all. Clearly, this reflects the poverty level of the protagonist compared to the working class in Los
Angeles. The people who are inside these buildings are having a good life, but Antonio is homeless;
he does not even have money to rent a shelter to protect himself.
The structure of the freeways illustrates the lack of freedom in the protagonist s social life. In the
beginning of the story, the author uses sleep under the freeway repetitively to emphasize Antonio s
low social status (9). Freeways represent work and economic activity, but Antonio has fallen off the
track. He is now under the freeway because he has dropped from the flow of the busy city life to the
lowest level in Los Angeles. Antonio was a scholar in Guatemala, but he works as a bus boy and later
becomes homeless after he moved to Los Angeles. The author states, Los Angeles made him
[Antonio] short (53). Antonio s social status is lowered by the city. He has become so short that it is
almost impossible for the others to notice him. A factor that lowers Antonio s social status is
communication. Antonio meets Frank in the homeless camp who says that people are switching lane

Essay on The Mistress in Death of a Salesman
The Mistress in Death of a Salesman
The mistress, sultry yet sophisticated, played a larger part in the play, Death of A Salesman, than most
would imagine. While she does not make an appearance in the play, she does appear in Willy s
remembered time. During his daydreams, she is referred to as the woman . The woman in Death of A
Salesman never appears in the play, but has a noteworthy presence because she affects the action,
theme, and the development of other characters.
As an outcome of having a mistress, Willy s fragile ego is boosted.
For example, while he is on his lengthy business trips, she lavishes him attention and affirmation.

Biff travels to Boston to ask his father for assistance. Instead of getting help, he finds out the truth
about his father. After he finds out about the woman, he realizes his dad is a fake. Willy was someone
he admired but now all he sees is a phoney. Moreover, Willy s infidelity strips Biff of his faith in his
father. He held his father s ideas in high esteem but now was disgusted with him. He could not handle
his father s greatest ego stroking lie. All of the aspirations Willy had for Biff never came true Biff did
not want what his dad wanted for him anymore. As a result of Willy s affair, Willy begins to see Biff
as a failure. Willy cannot accept the idea that
Biff does not want what he wants. Now that Biff is back from the West,
Willy and him constantly argue over the fact that he is not a success.
This all goes back to the woman. Biff realized he wanted to carve his own way and not end up like his
father: creating ego stroking lies.
All together, Willy s unfaithfulness caused a monumental strain on his relationship with Biff.
After Biff found out about his father s affair, he constantly struggled to succeed. He used to dream of
going to the University of
Virginia. He even had shoes that had their logon printed on them. But after his encounter with the
woman, he did not care anymore. He

Happiest Place On Earth Essay
Every week I make my trek to Disneyland for a little inspiration. Yes, this famous Anaheim theme
park is coined the Happiest Place on Earth, but if you study the life and success (along with failures)
of Walt Disney, it probably should be called the Most Inspiring Place on Earth. Of course, I m the first
in line beating out the teens wanting to ride Thunder Mountain. I m certain if you re in the park you ve
probably heard me screaming my lungs out when we make those sharp turns on Matterhorn.
The real reason I go to Disneyland? Well, I go for the inspiration.
Walt Disney almost didn t make his dream come true. In a blink of an eye everything he came to build

Mickey, but this mouse has millions of followers around the world.
Keep Asking. If you find yourself frustrated by repeatedly being turned down, you re not alone. Walt
Disney repeatedly asked for financial backing and the majority of banks turned him down. From his
film Mary Poppins to Disneyland, Walt never let the idea of a negative response stop him. He needed
money for upcoming projects he believed in. What would have happened if he stopped asking banks?
Who knows, but he decided to keep asking and the rest is history.
Use Your Talent. Walt Disney wasn t defined by a one word occupation. He was a writer, illustrator,
boss, director and even a theme park designer. He did it all and he learned everything he could about
the field. He hired people to help him, but he always offered up his talent when it came to the final
say. It was his name on the front door (and every theme park

The Importance Of Roofing Contractors In Frisco TX
Even in the best of economic times, hiring roofing contractors in Frisco TX can put you in a
precarious situation. You want to find the best possible deal, but just because a price is low, that does
not mean it is the best. If it seems to be too good a deal to be real, it usually is. If you are in the market
for roofing repairs, there are some very important things to consider. Some contractors are not above
taking shortcuts to save time and money. You need to know with whom your contractor is doing
business, and what sort of business they do. What is their history? They should have a positive
reputation for using good materials, having proper insurance, doing good work, and timeliness.
Choosing the cheapest roofing contractors in Frisco TX means risking more than your project. It is
possible to end up with a roofer who leaves you in the middle of the job, taking your money and
leaving you to deal with the aftermath. We have all heard of situations in which property owners
ended up with liability because the service provider did not have the proper insurance, such as
personal injury and negligence. If your contractor hires workers without training to cut costs, that

Bohemian Rhapsody Analysis
With its evolving and unique sound, Bohemian Rhapsody by the British band Queen may be one of
the strangest, most inspired and least understood songs in the history of rock. Released on October 31,
1975 in the album A Night at the Opera, Bohemian Rhapsody became very popular, staying at the top
of the UK Singles Chart for nine weeks and by the end of January, had more than a million copies
sold. Freddie Mercury, the sole writer of this song, never disclaimed the song s official meaning, but
Brian May, the lead guitarist of the band, believes it is about his struggles in life and how he tried to
get past society s standards, for the lyrics progress through the central character s understanding of the
situations portrayed in the song. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The song becomes operatic, almost as if to show the importance of the situation at hand. The character
begins to plead with lyrics I m just a poor boy, nobody loves me, He s just a poor boy from a poor
family, Spare him his life from this monstrosity, Easy come easy go will you let me go. However,
those who are holding the judgement express no mercy, for then they respond with Bismillah! No we
will not let you go . The seriousness of the condition at hand is also shown by the stern choir of voices
striking the character with judgement.
The song then transitions to a hard rock sound, with the drums and guitar unleashing powerful
rhythms. This sound perfectly matches the character s reaction to their judgers, which anger and
defiance. This can be seen from the lyrics So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye, So you
think you can love me and leave me to die, Oh baby, can t do this to me baby, Just gotta get out, just
gotta get right outta here . However, this doesn t last long, for after a short powerful guitar riff, the
song shifts to a down tempo ballad. This leads to the character feeling resignation and complacency
with the lyrics Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters...to me . Then the song
fades out with the character saying Any way the wind blows , as if they are accepting whatever
challenge they had before.
All in all, this work of art manages to be equally loved by young kids

The Cell Number On The Nanotube With 30 Nm Diameter
Xianglong et al. found similar results (2) in their paper. The cell number on the Nanotube with 30 nm
diameter was significantly higher than the one without the nanotubes. For each incubation time, the
surface with the absence of nanotubes had the least cell adhesion. Even with respect to the filopodia
the nanotubes showed similar behavior. On the surface withy nanotubes of 30 nm diameter, the actin
of the cells was organized along the spreading direction and had formed many filopodia. Interestingly,
most of the cells on the surface of 80 nm diameter group maintained a round or oval shape, but the
cells also stretched out many filopodia. Cells on the three nanotextured surface had stretched out many
filopodia and some lamellipodia. In particular, the cellular cytoskeleton of cells on the 80 nm surface
achieved a more homogeneous and extensive arrangement compared with those of the other three
groups. The shapes of cells grown on the SLA + 30 nm and SLA + 80 nm surfaces were clearly
different. It was observed that those grown on the SLA + 80 nm surface were the most irregularly
shaped, while those grown on the SLA + 30 nm surfaces had relatively regular shapes.
Gene expression on the titanium surfaces was quantified using RT PCR.ALP expression level was
detected higher at week 1 and was subsequently greatly decreased at week 2. The expression level of
ALP in cells grown on the 80 nm surface was more than that in cells grown on other surfaces at all

Cultural And Social Capital Theory
Chen (2003) used the frameworks of cultural and social capital theory to explore factors affecting the
academic success of Chinese students in Los Angeles Community College. The results of the study
indicated that the aspirations of obtaining a higher level academic degree and then transferring to a
four year college or university were considered as the best predictors of academic success for Chinese
international students. Whereas, English proficiency was considered to be a weak factor and social
interaction factors were not too much related to Chinese international students academic success.
Yuan (2011) examined the experiences of ten Chinese students at one American university. This study
examined the challenges faced by Chinese international students, their social interaction, and their
attitudes to adapting into the American culture and society. The result indicated that Chinese
participants identified spoken English and class discussion as their major challenges while studying at
American higher education institutions. Besides, they stated limited interaction with Americans.
However, most of them highly praised the American educational system and regarded their
experiences in the United States as being worthwhile. It is also worth noting that the Chinese
participants expressed mixed perceptions of American culture and different attitudes to cultural
assimilation.

Animal Cruelty And Impurities In Upton Sinclair s The Jungle
I aimed at the public s heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach. A quote by Upton Sinclair from
his best known novel The Jungle. Sinclair, a social crusader from California, was an activist writer
whose work often uncovered the social injustices occurring during his time. At the age of 14 Sinclair
proved to be a force to recon with when he started attending City College of New York. After
graduating Sinclair began grad work at Columbia University supporting himself by writing dime

the meatpacking industry. After spending weeks undercover researching, Sinclair wrote a manuscript
that would become The Jungle. In 1906 The Jungle became his sixth and most successful novel. The

Underage Drinking Speech
Underage Drinking From the stereotypical teen parties in the classic movies with the red solo cup, and
the make sure you don t leave your cup sitting out like that to pressuring one another just take a few
sips, it won t hurt you phrases. It s all fun and games, but what they don t show is the aftermath and
how behind it all is the issues that ends all the fun and games of drinking and being drunk. They miss
the part showing the effects mentally/physical issues with your body, and all the accidents and the
innocent people that end up injured from just that one little sip to a few cups that your so called close
friend offered explaining you ll be fine , to when you realize what things could actually happen to you
could effect your whole life. Teens dont understand what actually happens while being under the
influence of alcohol. I feel there is always a solution to things like this situation being responsible,
paying attention to what goes in your drinks, and not driving while intoxicated. Underage drinking is a

Peter Singer Analysis
Poverty and hunger is a common social issue that affects a large percentage of the world population,
and has troubled nations all over the world for thousands of years. It s an issue that we can experience
every day without realizing it. We might see a commercial asking for donations on television, or a
homeless woman asking for money to feed her son at the bus stop, or in the news when they talk about
children dying of starvation.
Now, this issue brings out a particular question; are we obligated to donate and help those in need? Do
we have a moral obligation to do so? Or is helping those in need morally optional? Peter Singer and
Jan Narveson both discuss this issue, yet both have very different opinions. Peter in one hand, ... Show

He believes helping those in need, and giving donation, is completely optional. Opposed to Peter s
belief, Jan indicated that there is a distinction from not preventing something bad from happening,
than actually making it happen. For example, If I was to lock you in a room and let you starve to
death, I have consiensly murder you. But if someone else was to do the same thing to you, you would
have died of starvation. The outcome was not intended by my actions. If was to know that you were
starving, I might feel pity for you and would want to help you, or pehaps I would feel indifferent to
what you are going thought, either way, my previous activities did not cause your outcome, therefore I
may choose if I want to help you or not. Jan also indicates that there is a difference between justice
and charity. Justice are those actions that we are enforced to do. Charity is not. Charity is voluntarily
wanting to help and benefit those less fortunate. It is sometimes morally allowed to force someone to
fulfill their justice duties, but it is not morally allowed to force someone to be charitable. Charity is
something you do because you want to, and perhaps there is emotion behind that action. If we force
people to be charitable, it will no longer be charity, but

The Age Discrimination On Employment Act Of 1967
The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 was established to provide fairness in the
workplace for citizens over the age of 40. This law was intended to guard against employers using
unscrupulous hiring practices and unfairly firing individuals without legitimate reasons. The Civil
Rights Act was updated to fight discrimination based on sex, race, and religion, but never addressed
the issue of age. Age related concerns arose during the 1960 s when the economy began to change
rapidly in technology and scope. Many experienced professionals were being displaced or simply
discriminated against, because it was believed that it was cheaper to hire and train inexperienced
employees, or because it would save on pension expense that was due to personnel approaching
retirement age. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 provides security for older
employees that have the competency to do work but are held in prejudice, because they are advancing
in years. According to the West s Encyclopedia of American Law (2005), before the enactment of the
Employment Act of 1967, it was a standard practice to fire a senior employee in order to give a
promotion to a younger staff member. This practice supposedly saved the company money, because
the wages of the newly promoted person were lower compared to the previous staff. In addition, this
behavior promoted the idea within the business that the manager does not need any substantial
justification to let staff members go. The

Explaining Why Biological Warfare Cannot be Explained with...
The purpose of this essay is to explain why it will be a problem to explain biological warfare with the
SCOT theory, actor network theory and technological systems theory.
Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) is a theory that was introduced by Weiber Bijker that
explains the link between social and technical processes of a technology or artifact. Bjiker argued that
technology is shaped by human engineers, market forces, consumer s needs and demands. In SCOT,
technology is a social construction. Because technology is socially constructed, it involves flexibility
of interpretations, stabilization and closure.
Biological warfare cannot be explained by SCOT theory because stabilization and closure which is the
cornerstone of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among the components of technological systems are physical artifacts, such as biological weapon
agents, aerosols, milling machines, microscopes. Technological systems also include organizations
such as terrorist groups, governments and manufacturing laboratories. Legislative artifacts such as
treaties and protocols can also be part of technological systems. Overtime, technological systems tend
to join environmental factors into the system eliminating uncertainty ( free market ). They are goal
oriented: reordering of the material world to make it more productive. As technological systems
develop after a long period acquire momentum which makes the system have more influence on
society it will begin to shape society.
The reason technological systems concept will be unable to explain biological warfare is because
Hughes assumed that the society can resist the momentum of a technology if they act earlier. In the
production and use of biological weapons, the majority of the public are outsiders therefore, even if
the society is aware of biological weapon technology in its early stage, their voice would not have any
influence on the technology compared to the insiders (experts like microbiologists and organizations).

Lizzie Wade Analysis
The main take home message I took from the articles was that genomes hold a part of a way to show
what ethnic group an individual may be associated with. In the article by Lizzie Wade, she described
how it is understandable how someone of German descent has a different genetic variation than
someone from Japan. Wade goes on and mentions that even some ethnic groups may have many
genetic variations within its own. Studying only one ethnic group would not help with determining
how much an individual belongs to a certain ethnic group. That is why researchers take all genetic
variations in account when for example trying to explain the risk of disease or reactions to different
kinds of medications an individual might acquire. The quote by

Common Problems Faced by International Students in the UK
In the last few years, studying abroad has become an increasingly popular choice for higher education
among international students (Accessibility Navigation, 2014). An average of 10% of students in
universities all across the UK are international students from countries all over the world.
(Accessibility Navigation, 2014). Although the experience is different for each individual student,
there are many common problems that international students face. Those problems include: culture
shock to varying degrees coupled with emotional issues(Bailey, 2005), Language barriers along with
other communication problems (Sherry et al, 2009), and academic problems due to a change in school
curriculum (Ramachandran, 2011). This essay will expand on the ... Show more content on

It can be argued that if international students are given accurate information on what to expect, the
culture shock can be minimised or avoided(Sherry et al, 2009). Instead of limiting the orientation
experience to getting a geographical and academic feel of the campus, the students should also be
given the opportunity to have a supervised cultural feel of their new country of study (Turner, 2009).
Another solution that has been suggested is that the institution organise more formalised social
interaction (Sherry et al, 2009). Instead of leaving students solely to their own devices where making
new friends and meeting people in their new community is involved, the institution can organise
events and activities that group students from different parts of the world together (Sherry et al, 2009).
A common suggestion is that social clubs be put in place to bridge the gap between international
students and other students on campus. One main focus of these social clubs would be to improve the
social interaction and verbal communication skills of international students (Sherry et al, 2009). The
social clubs could also be a way for the international students to overcome the language barrier
(Sherry et al, 2009). Feedback and past data from international students on the steps taken by the
institution to promote integration could also be helpful in setting precedent for other action to stem
from (Sherry et al, 2009).

Argumentative Essay On White People
We live in a society where white people have the upper hand in almost every circumstance. It is hard
for most if not all white people to understand and comprehend this because privilege is hard to see for
those who were born with access to power and resources (Kendall 1). White people aren t judged by
the color of their skin or certain facial features they possess. Because of their looks, people of color,
specifically black people get shot in the back for walking down the street or just simply fitting a

White people get to parade around the streets in their pickup trucks blasting Tim McGraw and their

or turning on the LED regardless of which state the CdS sensor puts the LED in. Your program should
keep track of the exact time the LED is either on or off. Must output the date and time the LED was
turned on or off.
Lab Setup:
Figure 1: Lab Setup
Conclusion
The result of the experiment was a success. The C program used the BBB kernel via paths to operate
the LED as specified. The push button set the system to manual mode and turned off the light if it was
on and turned the LED on if it was off. The second push of the button switched it back to automatic
mode. The turning on and off of the LED also resulted in accurate time stamps of the LED being on or

The lab was pretty simple, however, the process was a little challenging in the beginning. Unlike the
previous labs, we had to configure each pin for our desired functionality, which made it a bit difficult.
The majority time on this lab was spent on configuration of the pins, rather than writing the code.

This Way for the Gas, Ladies Gentlemen
The sole factor that separated Tadeusz Borowski from the gas chambers when he was at Auschwitz
beyond the fact that he wasn t Jewish was his cooperation with the S.S. soldiers. He assisted the Nazis
in eliminating thousands of Jewish men, women, and children. This Way for the Gas, Ladies and
Gentlemen ultimately uses the narrator to convey Borowski s message of what really happened during
the Holocaust. This also explains why the story is in first person: it reflects the author s own
experiences. Borowski s writing is quite crude: harsh yet realistic. Readers cannot judge Borowski
negatively; he was as much of a victim as the people coming off the transports.

soldiers while ultimately they are equals to those being sent to the gas chambers.
Borowski mentioned a key reason as to why he did not commit suicide. His own question What will
the world know of us if the Germans win? allowed him to fight through the struggle in the hopes of
getting out alive one day and sharing the truth with the world; it would be the only way the truth
emerged (Charters 150). What may seem immoral to people outside the camps is ordinary to those
inside as proven by Henri s actions in the story. Ultimately, though, the two worlds are incomparable.
Due to his need to collaborate with the S.S. soldiers in order to keep himself alive, many may consider
that Borowski indeed played a huge part in the deaths of thousands of people when he could have
taken a more noble route self immolation as the girl did in the story. This is hindsight bias, however,
and does not take into account the terror that filled the prisoners. In a hope to see life beyond
imprisonment, anyone would take part in this process. The survival of the fittest theory created by
Charles Darwin analyzes organisms behavior towards one another and their environment to see who

Pros And Cons Of Plea Bargaining
The plea bargain (also plea agreement, plea deal, copping a plea, or plea in mitigation) is any
agreement in a criminal case between the prosecutor and defendant whereby the defendant agrees to
plead guilty to a particular charge in return for some concession from the prosecutor. This may mean
that the defendant will plead guilty to a less serious charge, or to one of the several charges, in return
for the dismissal of other charges; or it may mean that the defendant will plead guilty to the original
criminal charge in return for a more lenient sentence It all starts with backed up courtrooms. A man is
charged with killing another man. There is no evidence to convict this man of these charges. This
leads the prosecutors to work out a plea bargain. The pressure of other cases and the need for a guilty
charge is what leads plea bargaining to happen more every year. As a result many criminals get off
easy and in return prosecutors look good for winning the case. The practice of plea bargaining is a
controversial issue that both benefit the court and the criminal. Plea bargaining was not always wide
spread throughout the court system. Today it is a main practice for prosecutors to put away criminals,
even if it is for lesser charges. Plea bargains happen for many reasons and are beneficiary and negative
to everyone involved the process. The reasons why plea bargaining is used so much range from the
accused to the prosecutors. This practice is usually used because courts these

Schedule Reflection
On 9/22/2016 I came down to Mrs. Gauthier s office to attempt to change my schedule as I believe
losing 5 weeks of work in a core and elective is uncalled for, in addition some of my classmates were
able to revert their schedule changes. Now I made it clear to her that the point of my schedule change
was not due to me wanting a specific period to talk to friends, but instead to have the same teacher to
minimize the loss of work I would have, as losing over a month of work out of the quarter is
extremely hard to recover from. Throughout talking to her I stated how I talked to my teachers to see
if they had any open classes I can transfer into, my chemistry teacher stated yes as well as my English
teacher who I was switched out of. Now from my research, the state mandate states that there is a 25
student limit only for core classes, so I was also wondering why I was switched out of an elective.
Furthermore, as we went on through the conversation when I told her that my friends were able to
switch their classes she replied to go talk to her counselor instead of me. As well as calling me
difficult although other people had the ability to talk to their counselors, and at the end of our talk she
raised her voice stating that even if she could she won t in contrary to how she said I can t in the
beginning of our talk. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Metaphor In Where Things Come Back
Where Things Come Back is an odd tale about the way loss can affect people. A young man by the
name of Cullen Witter begins his senior year of highschool in the small static town of Lilly Arkansas.
The town becomes infatuated with the supposed return of the long lost Lazarus Woodpecker. Cullen s
summer before his senior year of high school, he first experiences loss in the form of death. His cousin
Oslo passed away due to drug abuse. His second loss is that of his brother, Gabriel Witter, who
suddenly goes missing and disappears. Gabriel, Cullen, and Cabot Searcy s lives are all eventually tied
together because of a missionary named Benton Sage. Cullen Witter also experiences the feeling of
loss in the form of love and second chances. This story shows that hope and finding one s faith can all
come together for one last chance. Whaley uses a metaphor in Where Things Come Back to explain
Cullen s loss of his cousin Oslo. It states, Nothing idealistic about seeing your only cousin ghost white
and stone dead. It is a metaphor because it refers Oslo as ghost white and stone dead without using
like or as as descriptors. The author of Where Things Come Back also uses an idiom on page 88 of
Chapter Nine. It says, Can we just talk for a minute? I said, trying not to laugh at the absurdity of my
situation. Talk is cheap, he said back. This is an example of an idiom because talk isn t literally
measured in wealth, it is just a saying to show that you need to cut to the

The Struggle Of The Civil War
The Civil War was fought over states rights and slavery, and whether slavery should be expanded into
the western states. The compromises of 1820 and 50 was made to maintain the amount of free and
slave states in Congress. Though with Lincoln s election the southern states seceded due to the south
believing he would abolish slavery, though only 1% of the south s population owned slaves, however,
most of the south was consumed by sectionalism which caused all of them to simply believe that
slavery was their way of life. Thus when Lincoln was elected the southern states seceded, with the
exception of the border states. Though when the south found out about Fort Sumter and didn t allow
supplies to enter a fight broke out and the civil war ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Though after finding Hooker had acted without orders Lincoln fired him. Lee discovered Hooker was
in pursuit through a spy, Harrison on June 28, 1863. Hooker was fired only 3 days before the battle
took place. He was replaced with General Meade. Who moved North towards Pennsylvania, keeping
his troops between Lee and the Union capital. The two troops met and fought just Northwest of the
town of Gettysburg. This would be where the real bloodshed would take place, thankfully it wouldn t
be as bad as Antietam. June 30, 1863, the battle was starting to quickly take rise. It started with Brig.
Gen. Buford slows the rebel advancement. Which allowed him to realize the importance of the high
ground. Day 1, July 1, 1863, Reinforcements had arrived, it was the 1st and 11th corps. But with the
Union reinforcements, the Confederates reinforcements had come as well, General s, A.P. Hill and
Richard Ewell arrived with multiple corps. The union was outnumbered 30,000 to 20,000. After the
death General Reynolds, the Yankees fell back. They fell back to some hills just south of the town.
The hills are now known as Cemetery Hill and Culp s Hill. Which led to the second battle at the hills,
that would take place day 2 of the battle. The date was now July 2, 1863. Just before dawn general,
Meade arrived with reinforcements for the Union. They form a hook shade right along Culp s hill.

Effect Of Substrate Concentration On Enzyme Activity
The Effect of Environmental Conditions on Enzyme Activity
Ikram Hassan
SBI3UW 02
November 13, 2017.
Research Question: What is the effect of substrate concentration (as measured in % concentration) on
the rate of enzyme activity (as calculated by the dividing the measured distance in cm, +/ 0.1 cm,
travelled by a substance in a manometer by the time in seconds, +/ 0.5 seconds)?
Background:
A substrate is a molecule which is acted upon by an enzyme. For a chemical reaction to occur through
enzyme, substrate molecules bind to the active site of an enzyme, which contains residues that
catalyse the reaction of the substrate.
Hypothesis: If the concentration of the substrate is increased, then the rate of enzyme activity will
decrease. This is because as the concentration of the substrate increases, there is an increasing amount
of occupied active sites at any given moment. This will cause a decrease in the rate of enzyme activity
as substrate active site collisions are increasingly slowed down thus bringing down the rate of enzyme
activity.
Variables:
Independent: Substrate Concentration: Throughout the experiment, the concentration of the substrate
used will be increased in order to determine the effect of an increase of substrate concentration on
enzyme activity. The substrate throughout the experiment will be a hydrogen peroxide solution and an
original 30% concentration will be diluted with water into 10% and 5% concentrations in order to
observe the effect of

random things like cells. HIs current motto is high speed low drag although I don t completely

outfit usually consists of sports shorts and a t shirt, but in the winter his shorts swich out out for jeans
and he adds a jacket on top of his t shirt. Other than that he wears formal wear which is most likely a

Individualism In Rocky Iv
Ronald Reagan was the 40th president of America from 1981 to 1989. His arrival brought the promise
of a new dawn in American politics because he came to power in the midst of the Cold War(Richards),
a clash between two titans: the capitalist U.S and the communist U.S.S.R. During the Cold war, the
media became an extremely influential tool, especially in film. It was used as a form of propaganda by
both superpowers. Rocky IV, directed by Sylvester Stallone, is one such film that highlights and
endorses the ideals laid out by the Reagan Administration. These values can be briefly summarized as
the instigation of family values, the concept of rugged individualism, and perhaps more importantly,
the endless debate between communism and capitalism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The years of presidency lead to the decline of communism and the end of a grueling Cold war. He
redefined the purpose of a government (Bio). He reiterates a government is always elected for, by and

Dream. He encouraged the ideas of life, liberty, and freedom. He dared America to dream of greatness.
It is indeed, Reagan s dedication in the pursuit of individuality and self determination, which gets so
adequately illustrated by Rocky Balboa s resilience in Rocky IV. The film shows America that there is

Major Depressive Disorder ( Depression )
Major Depressive Disorder (Depression) is a mood disorder where a person has a constant feeling of
sadness and complete loss of interest in everyday life. It is considered more serious than a case of the
blues and might require long term treatment. During major depressive disorder, the person thinks and
behaves differently and may experience emotional and physical problems.
Causes
The exact cause has yet to be pinpointed. It is believed that specific neurotransmitters in the brain may
stop acting the way they should and therefore affect the state of the individual s mood. The impact of
hormones is also called into question because hormone imbalances, for example pregnancy and
thyroid dysfunction, are believed to cause depression. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Overwhelming feeling of sadness or hopelessness.
Trouble concentrating and making decisions.
Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and shame. Worrying over past indiscretions or failures.
Slower thinking.
Treatment
Many people with depression find that medications along with regular visits to a psychologist or
psychiatrist are a very effective form of treatment.
Cognitive Therapy this form of cognitive therapy starts out by educating the client on what may cause
the depression and that negative thoughts should be redirected. The therapist teaches the client how to
identify the bad thoughts as they occur throughout the day and the emotions that are associated with
them. It is helpful because once the person can identify the negative thoughts, they can begin the steps
to try to change them.
Family Therapy this therapy should be considered if the affected individual s depression begins to
affect his/her family. This treatment creates a therapeutic environment for each person to discuss their
feelings openly and encourage open communication between family members.
Hospitalization in severe cases where a person with depression has expressed suicidal thoughts or
even attempted suicide, an inpatient treatment program with constant monitoring can be very helpful.
Electroconvulsive Therapy/ Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation this type of therapy is viewed as a last
resort option. In ECT, a current is passed through the skull into the

This does not detract the sources useful information as to the advancements of recording studio
technology. Bryce Merrill illustrates the interactions between memory and home studio recordings
through presenting ethnographic data in his paper, Music to Remember Me By . Merrill creates an
interesting argument, supporting the use of home recording studios and their impact upon musicians in
regard to wellbeing. The key elements within this article centre on the use of memory in the studio,
new technologies, and the practice of home recording. The emphasis on personal experience and a
lack of adequate external evidence, however, is apparent within this article which does compromise
the validity of the notions presented. Although, it does serve as a great personal case study as Merrill
explains his personal perspective of technological changes. More so, Merrill also manifests the
personal impact and the necessity to adapt to technological changes, alluded to within Gibson s article,
which is also mentioned by Pinch and Bijsterveld . Therefore, these sources provide an overall solid
basis for further research into the effect of technology upon both home and professional recording
studios. The advancements made in digital music technology has allowed the accessibility of
information on recording knowledge, that was once privy to those within a professional status. Studio
engineers have always depended

House Of Sand And Fog Book Analysis
The Differences Between House of Sand and Fog Book and Movie Books can be extremely detailed
and pictures are painted for the reader by words. Sometimes directors try to transfer these books into
movies. This is a very hard process as words written in a book cannot always be performed in a
reasonable amount of time for a movie. These movies often sell the book short and there are
differences, sometimes major changes between the book and movie. In the novel, House of Sand and
Fog, the plot revolves around three characters. Behrani, an Iranian colonel following the Iranian
Revolution. Behrani ends up working as a garbage collector and as a clerk in a convenience store

In the novel, one can see the characters from many different perspectives. In the book the writer
reveals much about Lester s life by highlighting his childhood experiences where his father abandoned
him as a teenager. The book also mentions how Lester was bullied in his childhood just to paint a
picture on what could have caused Lester to be the person he is in adulthood. When one reads the
book he can tell a lot about the characters as more information about their background is revealed.
Behrani s background as a military principal and financial prowess is revealed much in the book,
showing reasons behind his quest for success just to reclaim his lost mighty. Perelman s movie on the
other hand minimizes the novel by removing several scenes as portrayed in the novel. The movie
briefly mentions the issue of Lester being abandoned by his father but there is not much detail about
his childhood. The movie also changes a number of scenes on the plot of the story. For instance in the
last scene of the book, Behrani finds Kathy in his home following the death of his son. He then tries to
strangle her to death before taking his wife s life along with his own. Kathy and Lester are arrested. In
the movie s final scene, Kathy finds both Behrani

  • 2. Essay On Electronic Cigarettes Conventional cigarettes emit tobacco smoke, which is the most significant air quality tissue.6 The most harm aspect of tobacco smoke is the combustion of chemicals.4 It has been declared a Group 1 carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.5 Carcinogens are continuously emitted through a smoking session and is exposed to smokers and nonsmokers alike.4 Smoking in public buildings has been banned in the United States and Europe to improve indoor air quality.6 As an alternative, electronic cigarettes (e cigarettes) were developed.6 An electronic cigarette is a battery, microchip, red LED that acts like a burning cigarette tip, a cartridge with a liquid, and a vaporization chamber.1 It delivers nicotine, propylene glycol, and/or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Electronic cigarettes and cartridges are unregulated and vary from company to company. This results in electronic cigarettes with different designs, materials, combustion voltages, and liquid cartridge concentrations.4 Other differences include an open or closed system used in an e cigarette and the user s individual puffing topography.3 All studies provided in this paper conclude that electronic cigarettes produce lower levels of pollutants, making electronic cigarettes safer for the user, bystanders, and the environment when compared to conventional cigarettes. Schober et al. reports further research needs to be conducted to address long term effects of using electronic cigarettes. Oh et al. reports further research should be done on the various nicotine dosing, flavors of liquid cartridges, and various voltages. Oh also remarks that these studies use different brands and types of electronic cigarettes that have different doses of liquid cartridges. Ario et al. reports that second hand exposure should be further investigated to find possible health issues. Colard et al. reports that further studies should be done to report concentrations in different locations, with different distances from the user and the bystanders, and with different vaping behaviors (puff volume, frequency, and inhalation). Bertholon et al. reports that the toxicity of long terms will vary based on the additives and contaminants in propylene glycol and/or glycerol. O Connell et al. reported that there are limits in the studies because there were different methods used, in addition to the different designs and manufacturing of electronic cigarettes, and because some findings were not replicated. O Connell et al. proposes focusing on consumer exposure and using different product types in different settings with different volunteer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sherman Alexie Indian Tribe According to the Webster Dictionary, a tribe is a social division in a traditional society consisting of families or communities linked by social, economic, religious or blood ties, with a common culture and dialect. In Sherman Alexie s novel, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, in the chapter Remembering Arnold list all the tribes that he belongs to. He says, I was a Spokane Indian. I belonged to that tribe. But I also belonged to the tribe of American immigrants. And the tribe of basketball players . . . (Alexie 217). Having to face being the only daughter, being poor, and missing a best friend can really shape you as a person whether it be good or bad. Throughout majority of the book Arnold talks about how much he misses his best friend Rowdy, and wants nothing more but to get their friendship back. Rowdy and Arnold were longtime friends. Rowdy would protect and watch after Arnold because everyone on the rez picked on him for having disabilities. Arnold would be save as long as Rowdy was around, because everyone feared Rowdy. Arnold thought they would be friends forever, that was until Arnold announced that he would be leaving the rez to attend Reardan High School. Rowdy hated him for that. • 4. The Best Route For Nuanced And Equitable Access For... It is almost a conundrum to consider the best route for nuanced and equitable access for information. I think on some level the words nuanced and equitable contradict each other. These words can be understood as existing on a continuum. On one end there are the nuanced (i.e. more precise or expert) classification systems which tend to serve the skilled searcher very well, and the novice searcher very badly. Unless you are familiar with the controlled vocabulary you are unlikely to find answers. On the other end of the spectrum there are equitable classification systems which, in the struggle to make the search easy and possible for all, lose the nuance needed to find what is specifically sought. Search engines for example, are broad and constrained by very few search rules. The knowledge gained from a search engine can be found by nearly anyone with basic knowledge. The results returned from many poorly constructed searches, however, are generic and the number of results can be so broad as to be meaningless. So which is better? To have an access system so stringent that a layperson will have a difficult time retrieving results? Or have an access system so open that anyone can retrieve results, but the results may not be as relevant as they need to be? As usual, the answer lies in finding a happy medium. I believe the best route for creating access to cultural heritage information, a way to have the best of both nuance and equity, is to employ a system that has a public ... However, the city holds two groups of people in different economic level the homeless and the working class. Hector Tobar frequently includes the landscape of the setting in downtown Los Angeles in The Tattooed Soldier. The novel is about two immigrants from Guatemala who have moved to Los Angeles. The protagonist, Antonio, takes a revenge on the antagonist, Longoria because he murdered Antonio s wife and son when he was a Guatemalan soldier. Buildings, freeways, and shadows are metaphors for Antonio s economic and social status. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The stock exchange building represents material life and the windowless building represents security. Antonio can observe these buildings that illustrate an ideal life, but he belongs to none of the qualities that are associated with these buildings. He is exposed to all the danger of the city with no money at all. Clearly, this reflects the poverty level of the protagonist compared to the working class in Los Angeles. The people who are inside these buildings are having a good life, but Antonio is homeless; he does not even have money to rent a shelter to protect himself. The structure of the freeways illustrates the lack of freedom in the protagonist s social life. In the beginning of the story, the author uses sleep under the freeway repetitively to emphasize Antonio s low social status (9). Freeways represent work and economic activity, but Antonio has fallen off the track. He is now under the freeway because he has dropped from the flow of the busy city life to the lowest level in Los Angeles. Antonio was a scholar in Guatemala, but he works as a bus boy and later becomes homeless after he moved to Los Angeles. The author states, Los Angeles made him [Antonio] short (53). Antonio s social status is lowered by the city. He has become so short that it is almost impossible for the others to notice him. A factor that lowers Antonio s social status is communication. The character begins to plead with lyrics I m just a poor boy, nobody loves me, He s just a poor boy from a poor family, Spare him his life from this monstrosity, Easy come easy go will you let me go. However, those who are holding the judgement express no mercy, for then they respond with Bismillah! No we will not let you go . The seriousness of the condition at hand is also shown by the stern choir of voices striking the character with judgement. The song then transitions to a hard rock sound, with the drums and guitar unleashing powerful rhythms. This sound perfectly matches the character s reaction to their judgers, which anger and defiance. This can be seen from the lyrics So you think you can stone me and spit in my eye, So you think you can love me and leave me to die, Oh baby, can t do this to me baby, Just gotta get out, just gotta get right outta here . However, this doesn t last long, for after a short powerful guitar riff, the song shifts to a down tempo ballad. This leads to the character feeling resignation and complacency with the lyrics Nothing really matters, anyone can see, nothing really matters...to me . Then the song fades out with the character saying Any way the wind blows , as if they are accepting whatever challenge they had before. The cell number on the Nanotube with 30 nm diameter was significantly higher than the one without the nanotubes. For each incubation time, the surface with the absence of nanotubes had the least cell adhesion. Even with respect to the filopodia the nanotubes showed similar behavior. On the surface withy nanotubes of 30 nm diameter, the actin of the cells was organized along the spreading direction and had formed many filopodia. Interestingly, most of the cells on the surface of 80 nm diameter group maintained a round or oval shape, but the cells also stretched out many filopodia. Cells on the three nanotextured surface had stretched out many filopodia and some lamellipodia. In particular, the cellular cytoskeleton of cells on the 80 nm surface achieved a more homogeneous and extensive arrangement compared with those of the other three groups. The shapes of cells grown on the SLA + 30 nm and SLA + 80 nm surfaces were clearly different. It was observed that those grown on the SLA + 80 nm surface were the most irregularly shaped, while those grown on the SLA + 30 nm surfaces had relatively regular shapes. Gene expression on the titanium surfaces was quantified using RT PCR.ALP expression level was detected higher at week 1 and was subsequently greatly decreased at week 2. It s an issue that we can experience every day without realizing it. We might see a commercial asking for donations on television, or a homeless woman asking for money to feed her son at the bus stop, or in the news when they talk about children dying of starvation. Now, this issue brings out a particular question; are we obligated to donate and help those in need? Do we have a moral obligation to do so? Or is helping those in need morally optional? He believes helping those in need, and giving donation, is completely optional. Opposed to Peter s belief, Jan indicated that there is a distinction from not preventing something bad from happening, than actually making it happen. For example, If I was to lock you in a room and let you starve to death, I have consiensly murder you. But if someone else was to do the same thing to you, you would have died of starvation. The outcome was not intended by my actions. If was to know that you were starving, I might feel pity for you and would want to help you, or pehaps I would feel indifferent to what you are going thought, either way, my previous activities did not cause your outcome, therefore I may choose if I want to help you or not. Jan also indicates that there is a difference between justice and charity. Justice are those actions that we are enforced to do. Charity is not. Charity is voluntarily wanting to help and benefit those less fortunate. It is sometimes morally allowed to force someone to fulfill their justice duties, but it is not morally allowed to force someone to be charitable. • 25. The Age Discrimination On Employment Act Of 1967 The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 was established to provide fairness in the workplace for citizens over the age of 40. This law was intended to guard against employers using unscrupulous hiring practices and unfairly firing individuals without legitimate reasons. The Civil Rights Act was updated to fight discrimination based on sex, race, and religion, but never addressed the issue of age. Age related concerns arose during the 1960 s when the economy began to change rapidly in technology and scope. Many experienced professionals were being displaced or simply discriminated against, because it was believed that it was cheaper to hire and train inexperienced employees, or because it would save on pension expense that was due to personnel approaching retirement age. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 provides security for older employees that have the competency to do work but are held in prejudice, because they are advancing in years. According to the West s Encyclopedia of American Law (2005), before the enactment of the Employment Act of 1967, it was a standard practice to fire a senior employee in order to give a promotion to a younger staff member. This practice supposedly saved the company money, because the wages of the newly promoted person were lower compared to the previous staff. In addition, this behavior promoted the idea within the business that the manager does not need any substantial justification to let staff members go. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The purpose of this essay is to explain why it will be a problem to explain biological warfare with the SCOT theory, actor network theory and technological systems theory. Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) is a theory that was introduced by Weiber Bijker that explains the link between social and technical processes of a technology or artifact. Bjiker argued that technology is shaped by human engineers, market forces, consumer s needs and demands. In SCOT, technology is a social construction. Among the components of technological systems are physical artifacts, such as biological weapon agents, aerosols, milling machines, microscopes. Technological systems also include organizations such as terrorist groups, governments and manufacturing laboratories. Overtime, technological systems tend to join environmental factors into the system eliminating uncertainty ( free market ). They are goal oriented: reordering of the material world to make it more productive. As technological systems develop after a long period acquire momentum which makes the system have more influence on society it will begin to shape society. The reason technological systems concept will be unable to explain biological warfare is because Hughes assumed that the society can resist the momentum of a technology if they act earlier. In the production and use of biological weapons, the majority of the public are outsiders therefore, even if the society is aware of biological weapon technology in its early stage, their voice would not have any influence on the technology compared to the insiders (experts like microbiologists and organizations). It can be argued that if international students are given accurate information on what to expect, the culture shock can be minimised or avoided(Sherry et al, 2009). Instead of limiting the orientation experience to getting a geographical and academic feel of the campus, the students should also be given the opportunity to have a supervised cultural feel of their new country of study (Turner, 2009). Another solution that has been suggested is that the institution organise more formalised social interaction (Sherry et al, 2009). Instead of leaving students solely to their own devices where making new friends and meeting people in their new community is involved, the institution can organise events and activities that group students from different parts of the world together (Sherry et al, 2009). A common suggestion is that social clubs be put in place to bridge the gap between international students and other students on campus. One main focus of these social clubs would be to improve the social interaction and verbal communication skills of international students (Sherry et al, 2009). The social clubs could also be a way for the international students to overcome the language barrier (Sherry et al, 2009). • 33. Argumentative Essay On White People We live in a society where white people have the upper hand in almost every circumstance. It is hard for most if not all white people to understand and comprehend this because privilege is hard to see for those who were born with access to power and resources (Kendall 1). White people aren t judged by the color of their skin or certain facial features they possess. Because of their looks, people of color, specifically black people get shot in the back for walking down the street or just simply fitting a description. Arab, middle eastern, and dark skinned south Asian people get accused of being terrorists. White people get to parade around the streets in their pickup trucks blasting Tim McGraw and their white hillbilly country music waving around multiple confederate flags, armed with loaded weapons, and wearing white hooded masks that look like a dunce cap covering their entire face which fits, because white people are a huge disappointment. He assisted the Nazis in eliminating thousands of Jewish men, women, and children. This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen ultimately uses the narrator to convey Borowski s message of what really happened during the Holocaust. This also explains why the story is in first person: it reflects the author s own experiences. Borowski s writing is quite crude: harsh yet realistic. Research Question: What is the effect of substrate concentration (as measured in % concentration) on the rate of enzyme activity (as calculated by the dividing the measured distance in cm, +/ 0.1 cm, travelled by a substance in a manometer by the time in seconds, +/ 0.5 seconds)? Background: A substrate is a molecule which is acted upon by an enzyme. For a chemical reaction to occur through enzyme, substrate molecules bind to the active site of an enzyme, which contains residues that catalyse the reaction of the substrate. Hypothesis: If the concentration of the substrate is increased, then the rate of enzyme activity will decrease. This is because as the concentration of the substrate increases, there is an increasing amount of occupied active sites at any given moment. This will cause a decrease in the rate of enzyme activity as substrate active site collisions are increasingly slowed down thus bringing down the rate of enzyme activity. Variables: Independent: Substrate Concentration: Throughout the experiment, the concentration of the substrate used will be increased in order to determine the effect of an increase of substrate concentration on enzyme activity. The substrate throughout the experiment will be a hydrogen peroxide solution and an original 30% concentration will be diluted with water into 10% and 5% concentrations in order to observe the effect of ...
