ABSTRACT
Our project deals with the planning ,designing and analysing of a
hostel building
A hostel is an essential construction in every town or
village .these were originally the place of hostel .we took this as
our project so as to enhance our therotical knowledge in areas of
planning ,designing and analysing
Structural design is the primary aspect of civil engineering
.The very basis of construction of any building ,residential house or
dams ,bridges ,culverts ,canals etc is designing
The foremost basis in structural engineering is the design
of simple basic components and members of a building viz. slabs
,beams ,columns and footing .for the design an architectural design is
prepared using the auto cad .in order to design them,it is important.to
first obtain the plan of the particular building that is positioning of the
particular rooms such that they serve their respective purpose and
also suiting to the reguirement and comfort position of columns are
fixed .there after the vertical house loads are calculations namely the
dead load and live load from IS:875

INTRODUCTION
This project deals with the planning analysis and design of hostel building.
The proposed site of the hostel building is located at Pollachi. In this project a two storey
building,(G+2) has been designed in detail for a framed connection. The ground floor
consists of warden room,mess,kitchen,store room tv room,study room etc., The first floor
consists of special rooms and general rooms. The second floor consists of sme in secon floor
rooms
STRUCTURAL ASPECTS
• Structural Aspects
• Venue - pollachi
• Type of structure - Hostel Building
• No.of storey - G+2
• Area of ground floor - 9171 sq ft
• Area of first floor - 9171 sq ft
• Area of second floor - 9171sq ft
• Floor height - 3m
• Outer wall thickness - 230 mm
• Partition wall thickness - 115 mm
• Material grade - M20 ,Fe415
PLANNING DETAILS
GROUND FLOOR

SECOND FLOOR
STRUCTURAL DESIGN
DESIGN OF SLAB
Slab size = 6.93m*4.87m
It is designed as a two way continuous slab
Effective depth of slab = 200mm
Overall depth of span = 220 mm
Load Calculation
Total load = 8.4 kN/m²
Design load = 12.6 kN/m²
Reinforcement Details
Ast = 687 mm²
Least of above 3, Provide 10mm dia bars at 115 mm c/c
Middle & Edge , strip Reinforcement
For shorter span, middle strip main Reinforcement is provided 10mm dia
bars, at spacing of 115mm, c/c at a distance of 3.77m.
For shorter span, edge strip main reinforcement is provided 16mm dia
bars, at spacing of 480mm, c/c at a distance of 0.628m.
Nominal Shear force
τᵥ = 0.27 N/mm²
τc = 0.36 N/mm²
Ks * τc>τᵥ
Hence safe in shear
Check for Deflection
deff < d
Hence the deflection is Safe
REINFORCEMENT DETAIL OF SLAB
DESIGN OF BEAM
Dimension calculation
d = 400mm
D = 450mm
Effective span(L)=5486mm
Load calculation
Total load = 16.94kN/m
Factored load = 31.4kN/m
Bending Moment and Shear Force
Mᵤ = 118.44kN/m
Vu = 86.13KN
Tension Reinforcement
Mᵤ< Mᵤ(limit)
So,provide singly reinforced.
Ast= 835mm²
Provide 20mm ȹ bars at 300mm spacing for c/c distance
Check for shear
τᵥ=0.34N/mm²
τc =0.50N/mm²
τᵥ < τc
Hence shear in safe
Check for deflection
(I/d)max>(I/d)actual
Hence safe.
REINFORCEMENT OF BEAM
DESIGN OF COLUMN
Size of column = Rectangular column
Dimensions
Size of column=230*450mm
Ultimate load=1058kN
Mux=Muy=42.15kN/m
Main reinforcement details
12 mm dia bars with 40 mm clear cover
d¹/D = 0.11
From chart SP16 d¹/D = 0.1 will be used
Pᵤ/fck bd = 0.12
Mᵤ/fck bd² = 0.119
Transverse Reinforcement(Lateral ties)
Spacing is the least of following
16 times min dia = 16 x12 = 192 mm
Hence provide laterals of 6mm @ 192 mm c/c
REINFORCEMENT OF COLUMN
DESIGN OF STAIRCASE
Let the stairs be designed as open Newel type around the life case
Let us provide a waist of = 200mm
Rise of = 150mm
Tread of = 250mm
No.of steps = 10 Nos
Grade of concrete = M20
Grade of Steel = Fe415
Load calculation
Total load = D.L of flight +D.L of steps + L.L+ F.F
D.L of flight = 4.37kN/m²
D.L of steps = 1.5625kN/m²
Live load of slab = 5kN/m²
Floor finishes = 0.4kN/m²
Total load = 11.33kN/m²
Bending Moment & Shear Force
Mu =18.35kNm
Vu =20.39kN
Mulim =62.1kNm
Mu<Mu (lim)
Hence it is safe.
Check for Depth
d=147.8mm< adopted depth
Hence depth is ok.
Ast =356.3mm²
Distribution bars=228mm²
Provide 12 mm dia of bars
REINFORCEMENT DETAIL OF
STAIRCASE
REINFORCEMENT DETAIL OF
STAIRCASE
CONCLUSION
• A Three storey R.C.C framed structure is designed as an apartment building.
• Analysis of frame is carried out by STADD PRO software.
• The design adopted is limit state method M20 grade of concrete and Fe 415 grade of steel are
used.
• All structural elements are designed as under reinforced section.
• The design of slabs, beams, column and footing were done.
• All the drawings presented in this project report was drafted using
• AUTO CADD
• The beams have been designed by taking maximum bending moment of analysis results.
• The multi-purpose residential building will be beneficial to the people in and around the city.
• We are introducing the new plans and innovation in our project.
• We do our best in our potential and hard work in our project.
• We gain lot of experience and knowledge form this project.
