Prestressing is a construction method that uses hydraulic jacks to apply precompression to concrete and pretension to high-strength steel wires, utilizing the full strength of both materials to minimize deflection, allow for long spans, reduce member cross-sections and self weight, and provide good structural behavior with an easy and economical foundation design. Expansive cement can also be used for automatic prestressing as it causes length extension after final setting.
