Presentation of
Filtration
Filtration
Filtration maybe defined as a nonthermal mechanical
process in which undissolved particulates or
suspended solid particles are separated from a solid
liquid mixture by passing through a porous fibrous or
granular permeable known as Filtration.
Classification of filtration
Filtration and filters maybe classified in a number of
ways
 By driving Force
 By Function
 By filtration Mechanism
 By operating Cycle
 By nature of Solid
By Driving Force
Gravity Filters: The driving force for filtration is
gravity
like bag sand gravity filers
Pressure filter: The pressure is applied only the slurry
Like:
Pressure lead filters
Industrial tubular filter
 Continuous rotary press filter
By function
Filtration for recovery of solid: it is done by cake
filtration.
 Filtration for recovery of filtrate: accomplished in
both filter medium and cake.
Vacuum filter: The driving force is the sub
atmospheric pressure .
Vacuum leaf filter
Rotary vacuum filter
By filtration mechanism
Filter medium filtration: The solid are trapped within
the pores of the filter medium
Cake filtration: In this case the solid particles
themeselves form a bridge on the filter medium that
then acts as a barrier for the solid molecules but not
for the liquids.
By operating cycle
Batch filter: for small scale production.
Continuous filter: for large scale production.
By nature of solid
 Filtration for compressible solid
 Filtration for incompressible solid
Characteristic of filtration
It contains two phases one is solid and other is liquid
Or gas.
It requires a filter medium and some filtration
equipments .
It requires driving force.
It is basically a nonthermal mechanical process.
Application of filtration
Removal of unwanted solid impurities from the liquid
dosage form.
Filtration is essential formulation step in case of
suspension and emulsion.
Filtration does to remove undissolved solid substance
from the mixture to get a clear solution that is more
acceptable to the patients .
Fore the separation of two phases such as fluid and
solid filtration is extensively used.
