The fetal membranes in chickens include the chorion, amnion, yolk sac, and allantois. These extraembryonic membranes develop from tissues outside the embryo to provide protection, nutrition, respiration, and excretion. The chorion surrounds the embryo and aids respiration and protection. The amnion encloses the embryo in amniotic fluid for shock absorption and prevents adhesion. The yolk sac absorbs nutrients from the yolk. The allantois aids excretion, respiration, and calcium absorption to help hatching. All membranes disappear by or during hatching.
