2. INTRODUCTION
• The external genitalia are known collectively as
the vulva
• Consists of the following:
• Labia majora and Labia manora
• Vestibule
• Vestibular glands (Bartholin’s gland)
• Clitoris
• Vaginal orifice
• Hymen
2
3. LABIA MAJORA (1/2)
• Singular: labium majus
• These are the two large folds forming the boundary of the vulva.
• Composed of skin, fibrous tissue, fat and large numbers of
sebaceous glands.
• Anteriorly the fold join in front of the symphysis pubis, and
posteriorly merge with the skin of the perineum
• At puberty, hair grows on the mons pubis and on the lateral
surfaces.
3
4. LABIA MAJORA (2/2)
•Function:
• to cover and protect the inner, more
delicate and sensitive structures of the
vulva,
such as the labia minora, clitoris, urinary
orifice, and vaginal orifice.
4
5. LABIA MINORA
• ‘Smaller lips’
• A pair of thin cutaneous folds that form part of the vulva, or
external female genitalia.
• Function as protective structure for the clitoris, urinary orifice,
and vaginal orifice.
• In fact, the labia minora show a considerable amount of
variation in length, width, shape, and pigmentation between
individuals
5
6. VESTIBULE
• It is the cleft between the labia minora
• The vagina, urethra and duct of the greater vestibular gland
open into the vestibule.
• The borders of the vulva vestibule are formed from the edge of
the labia minora.
6
7. VESTIBULAR GLANDS
• Bartholin's glands also known as the greater vestibular glands
• are two pea-sized glands located slightly lateral and posterior
to the vagina opening.
• Function is to secrete a mucus-like substance within the
borders of the labia minora.
• This mucus functions as a lubricant to decrease friction during
intercourse and a moisturizer for the vulva. 7
9. CLITORIS (1/4)
• a sex organ in females that functions as
a sensory organ.
9
• It contains thousands of nerve endings that make it an extremely
sensitive organ
• The clitoris can be divided into three major regions: the glans, body,
and crura.
• The clitoris is a small projection of erectile
tissue in the vulva of the female reproductive
system.
10. CLITORIS (2/4)
• Extending from the crura is the body, the main cylindrical region of
the clitoris, which contains two columns of the erectile tissue.
• Blood filling the hollow chambers of the erectile tissue allows the
clitoris to grow in size and harden during sexual stimulation.
10
• Under the surface of the skin, two legs of erectile
tissue known as the crura fan out to support the
exterior structures of the clitoris and attach to
the underlying tissues.
11. CLITORIS (3/4)
• Finally, the glans forms the pointed tip of the
clitoris extending outward from the body and
beyond the prepuce that covers the rest of the
clitoris.
• Thousands of touch and pressure sensitive ner
endings are found throughout the clitoris
11
• Nerve endings in the body and glans are sensitive to direct touch and
pressure stimulation from outside of the body while the nerve endings
of the crus are sensitive to stimulation from within the vagina
12. CLITORIS (4/4)
• The nerve end stimulation is responsible for the majority of
sexual pleasure and sensation in the female body.
12
13. VAGINAL ORIFICE
• Also called the vaginal vestibule
or introitus, is the opening into
the vagina.
• It's located between the urethra
and the anus
13
14. HYMEN
• Hymen is a piece of tissue covering or surrounding part of
your vaginal opening.
• Its made of a thin layer of mucous membrane.
• It's formed during development and present during birth.
• It thins over time and tears.
• Some people will feel pain or bleed when their hymen breaks,
but most will not notice.
14
15. MONS PUBIS
• The mons pubis is a tissue mound made up of fat located directly
anterior to the pubic bones.
• This mound of tissue is prominent in females and is usually covered
in pubic hair.
• The mons pubis functions as a source of cushioning during sexual
intercourse.
• The mons pubis also contains sebaceous glands and also induce
sexual attraction.
15
16. PERINEUM
• The perineum is the area extending from the base of the labia
minora to the minora to the anal canal.
• It is roughly triangular and consists of connective tissue,
muscle and fat.
• It gives attachment to the muscle of the pelvic floor
