Sociology M2-D1
M2 Use different sociological perspectives to discuss patterns and trends of health and illness in two
different social groups
D1 Evaluate different sociological explanations for patterns and trends of health and illness in two
different social groups In this assignment I hope to effectively discuss and evaluate the patterns and
trends associated with health and illness within the higher and lower social classes. I am going to do
this by discussing and evaluating the following explanations and perspectives within sociology;
Artefact explanation, Natural or Social Selection explanation, Cultural or Behavioural explanation and
Materialist or Structuralist explanation.
Artefact explanation
This explanation suggests that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Why Honduras Should Be Funded
Imagine living without all the necessities for sophisticated life; no toothbrushes, no showers, no soft,
fluffy beds. It isn t pretty, is it? Well, projects to better the people of Honduras can be funded to give
them the quality that humans deserve to make a living. For example, the average annual income of
families of Honduras is less than six hundred dollars. Even government funded schools most children
can t afford to go to because of the cost of uniforms and school supplies. A reason that the people of
Honduras should be supported is because the average annual income is around a meager 580
American Dollars. According to the CIA World Factbook, Honduras is one of the poorest countries in
Latin America and has the world s highest murder rate. This means that most Hondurans don t have
money to buy food, let alone personal transport, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Honduras provides free public education through fifth grade, but sadly many students cannot attend
due to the cost of school supplies and uniforms. Many projects funding Hondurans are for money to
buy foodstuffs for re sale. The people need the profit from selling these items to afford the cost of their
children going to school. If their children can receive an education, they will be able to get better
paying jobs, ending the poverty cycle in that family line. The last reason why we should contribute to
funding for Hondurans is there is a high population growth rate and more people means more food is
needed. Since the population growth rate is approximately 1.64% (estimated in 2016), this means
more people in this country will need to find jobs or a way to get food and other necessities for their
families. Many families have multiple children to help with farm work, so families keep getting bigger
and bigger, meaning more food, so there is never an end to the continuous loop of struggles in their

The Agile Software Development Process Essay
Motivation Over the last several years, agile software development processes have become
increasingly popular. According to Fowler (2003), the agile software engineering processes attempt to
enable more flexible and adaptive software development than the traditional software engineering
processes offer. Agile practitioners consider documentation as an important aspect for their projects
but there is too little internal documentation available in their projects (Stettina and Heijstek, 2011).
Although the documentation is mentioned, it is not anchored in the original process that relies on
verbal communication (Schwaber and Beedle, 2001). Verbal communication is susceptible to lapses of
memory and after some time it gets progressively harder to recall design rationale. This problem is
compounded by team turnaround (Stettina and Heijstek, 2011). The main objective of documenting a
project is to instruct consumers about the structure of the system, its functionality, operability and the
design structure in case there is need to redesign the system. The primary consumers of the design
documentation are those who maintain or upgrade the system. Other stakeholders, such as users,
testers, and project managers may also need to know about the system (Selic, B., 2009). However,
according to Bran Selic, (2009) software developers do not like to document, as it has no value for
them. Even the agile manifesto, issued by the software industry s avant garde, proclaims Working

Interview With Mr. Robledo
At 1601 hours I was dispatched to 12625 Wetmore, SATX, Suite 436, Room 1163 to meet with Mr.
Jose Robledo concerning the positioning of 4 mannequins in an apartment room in a sexual manner. I
arrived on scene at 1604 hours along with several other officers. Upon arrival we met with Mr.
Robledo and he explained that the mannequins had been removed from their storage location under
the stairs leading to classroom 2 and positioned in a sexual manner in front of a window in the
apartment room. Earlier in the day Mr. Robledo had given a tour to Converse Police Department
recruiters and at that time the room had not been disturbed. This tour took place shortly before the

Shema Yisrael Summary
At the beginning of the movement, the mezzo soprano soloist sings the text from the Shema Yisrael,
an ancient prayer from Deuteronomy Chapter 6. The Shema Yisrael is considered by many to be the
most essential prayer of all of Judaism, and is an affirmation of God s singularity and kingship. It is
not only recited daily by traditional observing Jews, but also, according to the My Jewish Learning
website at the climactic moment of the final prayer of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and
considered the holiest day of the year, and traditionally as the last words before death.
The words for the beginning portion of the prayer that Ešenvalds uses for the pieces are as follows;
Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad. The translation is, Hear, O Israel, The Lord our God,
the Lord is One. To hear how the Shema Yisrael might be sung at Jewish religious gathering, click

Basically, Ešenvalds employs every tone between E and B. I think the employment of this dissonance,
especially with the interval of a major or minor second, is Ešenvalds building upon the theme of
consonant and dissonant intervals to describe a world in conflict. I believe Jesus, in the words
paradise, may be using a slightly dissonant chord because he acknowledges the present suffering, the
pain he and the other thieves are experiencing on the cross.. However, the glimmer in the chord that
the second gives, a technique often used by composers such as Lauridsen, harkens to a beauty and
light in heaven. Also, Em/B with added second and fourth Jesus is not ignoring the suffering that is
currently taking place, but there is beauty and comfort to the

Funny in Farsi Analysis
The focus of this paper is an analysis of the book Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas using concepts
from the Lives Across Cultures textbook. Ten concepts are identified and defined from Chapter
readings. Following definitions, examples from the novel of these concepts are shown. Ethnocentrism
is defined as the tendency to judge other people and cultures by the standards of one s own culture and
to believe that the behavior, customs, norms, values and other characteristics of one s own group are
natural, valid, and correct while those of other s are unnatural, invalid and incorrect. For example, in

She speaks of being invited to many households for sleepovers as an individual with an unfamiliar but
intriguing culture. Formal learning is set apart from the context of everyday life and is typically
carried out in the institution we know as school and is characterized by an explicit and highly
structured curriculum. Firoozeh is enrolled in American schools and is formally taught. Later in life
she attends Berkeley and funds her learning mostly through scholarship applications. Informal
learning is not characterized by a defined curriculum and is generally picked up by means of
observation and imitation. The responsibility of the learning usually falls on the learner and is
generally picked up from extended family members. Firoozeh focuses on her father in her novel and
ideas gleaned from his character. Her father being an engineer is methodical with his decisions,
sometimes cheap as described by his shopping experiences, but often with good advice. In collectivist
cultures, emphasis is on group success and individual ambitions are generally set aside for the
attainment of group goals. Firoozeh s Iranian culture is principle collectivistic. She shows examples of
this quality through the closeness of her family such as shared meals by her aunt, financial support
between family members, an uncle that cohabitates with her family, and encouragement of cousins
toward success. Fluid intelligence involves the ability to form concepts, reason abstractly,

The Diamonds by Ravi Landeck Essay
Ravi Landeck Short Story Third Draft The Diamonds Deep in the Alps lies a small town called Clay.
The sun was rising over a frosty blue mountain, and drops of dew dripped down from the leaves in the
valley. Arthur awoke to find his bedroom filled with light. He went downstairs and drank a glass of
water, not hungry enough for food. Arthur went outside into the chilly morning and started walking
down the road. The road was lined with hundreds of huge alpine trees. A large flock of birds flew over
Arthur s head in the sky. Arthur! Hey Arthur! Arthur turned his head to see his two friends James and
Derek . The three of them had been best friends for years. Hey guys Arthur said. James winked at him.

There next to the rock was a large leather bag. The morning dew glistened all over it. The three boys
ran toward the bag. Arthur knelt down next to it and examined it, eyeing it curiously. The bag was
sealed shut with tape. Derek drew his knife and handed it to Arthur. Here . James raised his eyebrows.
Derek looked down, squinting his eyes and frowning. Arthur cut the seal with a fluid motion of the
knife, and unzipped the bag. There it was. Hundreds of bright, polished diamonds, shining in the
forest. I ll be damned! James exclaimed. It s a miracle! Diamonds! Arthur laughed and Derek jumped
with joy. Holy shit! Derek said. My God! said Arthur. The three of them patted each other on the backs
and shook hands, laughing. This is amazing! said Arthur. Unbelievable! said Derek. How on earth did
these get here? James asked smiling. The diamonds were as big as golf balls, and some as small as
grains of rice. Each one was clear and shimmering. This is the loot of a world class thief! Derek said
and picked up the bag. Derek carried the bag on his shoulder, smiling proudly. And now its ours! Were
rich! Arthur and James followed behind. Arthur ran forward and did a cartwheel. This has to be worth
millions. Just think how much

Matt Drayton In Guess Who s Coming To Dinner
Spencer Tracy plays the role of Matt Drayton in Guess Who s Coming to Dinner, a film directed by
Stanley Kramer. In Guess Who s Coming to Dinner, Matt and Christina Drayton s attitudes are
challenged when their daughter, Joanna (Joey), brings home a fiancé who is black, John Wade
Prentice. This movie explores how different people related to John and Joanna react to the news of a
possible marriage between a black man and a white woman. John tells Matt and Christina that he
would not marry their daughter if they have an objection to the marriage. He also tells Matt and
Christina that they only have that day to make a decision. Spencer Tracy beautifully portrays the role
of a father who has to make a vital decision about his daughter s future not only considering her
happiness but also the social implications his daughter would have to deal with due to the decision. ...

Everyone knows that African Americans were not truly granted all their rights after slavery ended in
the United States because segregation was created by white people to stop the African Americans from
getting their rights. The United States Supreme Court ruling of 1954 that banned segregation in public
schools was the first step towards the end of segregation and the start of integration.1 Segregation
officially ended in 1964. Additionally, in 1967, the same year in which Guess Who s Coming to

Annotated Bibliography On Artificial Intelligence
Annotated Bibliography (Draft) Society today is greatly influenced by technology and the impact it
has had within the past 20 years. One of the largest breakthroughs, though, is Artificial Intelligence
(A.I.). The technology associated with A.I. has greatly developed in the past years, and is only making
devices smarter. When someone mentions technology, or even the technological breakthroughs the
world has gone through recently, many people go straight to smartphones and computers. A.I. is often
overlooked, or put into a general category of technology . Yet, artificial intelligence is something that
should we not be so quick to dismiss, and should be something that gets people talking and even
excited for what the future holds. For those who do not know, artificial intelligence is exactly what is
called, an intelligence through a computer that is artificially created by humans. A.I. is defined to be
able to learn and use the information it learns to produce thoughts of its own, almost as if it were a
thinking human. Though many may believe A.I. is just a robot which is able to speak and understand
humans, it is much more than that. A.I. technologies are being implemented in smartphones, homes,
cars, watches, headphones, and is also being developed to work in many more ways that help give
humanity an easier life. My background knowledge is somewhat fair. During my senior year of high
school I did a science research on the project, and it showed me little of what

Wonders Woman Vs Wonder Woman
There are no previous versions of the Wonder Woman movie to compare Patty Jerkins s Wonder
Woman to, consequently that serve it well, it should stand alone. There should be no demands to not
ruin an all time favorite movie, furthermore, we all know that comic book movies, for the most part,
stand apart from the comic books and television shows.
So what should we expect from Then Wonder Woman movie in 2017, well one thing we shouldn t
expect is anything that pantomimes Batman versus Superman or Suicide Squad, nor should we expect
a reincarnation of Iron Man, or any other Marvel movie. To clarify, I am not diminishing any of those
properties, but Wonder Woman is a singular, mighty, formidable warrior, who s mythos has stood tall

Death Of The Victorian Era Essay
Throughout the world, death plays a fundamental role, it is unavoidable and everyone will experience
it at some point in their lives. In contemporary western societies, death is accepted as such, and is
organised for, with people years before their death preparing wills and funerals for when their day
finally comes. However, for many, death still comes as a surprise, and most will always try and do
anything to prolong their lives and grasp at immortality. Yet this wasn t always the case, during the
Victorian era, whilst people still mourned and grieved, death was an accepted part of life. From the
Victorian era to now, death has both changed and stayed the same in many different ways, from the
way in which people die, to organising their death, and to the role medicine plays. The quest for
immortality has been around for hundreds of years, but in recent years, it has become less of a folktale
involving monsters, and instead is becoming far more believable. Whilst immortality will likely not be
seen for many generations, if ever, the idea has taken hold that science and modern medicine can
prolong life, and death no longer has to be an unavoidable point.
Preliminary Argument
Due to advancements in science and modern medicine, as well as the taboo on death and the rise of
the quest for immortality, people are becoming far less prepared mentally for death, and no longer
accept death as fact.

Effect of Detergent Concentration on Membrane Permeability...
Aim: To investigate how effect of Detergent Concentration (cont.) has on Membrane permeability of
Beetroot cells.
Hypothesis: I predict that as detergent concentration increases, the solution will become less clear,
plus mass increases. The increases in mass will indicate that the water potential of the Beetroot cell is
lower than that of the surrounding sucrose solution. The Beetroot discs will become flaccid and
decrease in mass if the water potential of the surrounding solution is lower than the water potential
inside the beetroot cell. I predict that Osmosis will not occur (at 0% cont.) if the water potential of the
sucrose solution (detergent) and the water potential of the cell s cytoplasm are equal. I also predict that

This has been shown by a steady increase in Anthon cyanine leaked out of plant cells as the
concentration and temperature increases.
The purpose of a cell membrane is to control the transport of substances moving into and out of a cell.
The membrane is an extremely thin layer (8 to 10 nanometers (nm)) thick, which is partially
permeable. It consists mostly of lipids and proteins. The lipids found in cell membranes belong to a
class known as triglycerides, so called because they have one molecule of glycerol chemically linked
to three molecules of fatty acids. The majority belong to one subgroup of triglycerides known as
phospholipids.
The cell membrane is made up of a phospholipid bilayer. The hydrophobic tails of the detergent
molecules are taken up by this bilayer. The detergent s hydrophilic heads will then repel (Micelle, an
electrically charge particle built up from polymer molecules or ions and occurring in certain colloidal
electrolytic solutions like soaps and detergents) the individual phospholipids and this will mean they
are disrupted . The detergent will then enter the cell, and the tonoplast surrounding the membrane.
Therefore, the higher concentration of detergent, the more detergent molecules, and this means there is
more chance of the extra detergent molecules being taken up by the cell membranes. If more detergent
is taken up by the cell membranes, more

History of the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Air Force
Although the 82nd Airborne was organized in 1917 during America s involvement in the First World
War it was during the Second World War that the unit gained its reputation. Its distinctive name was
garnered from the fact that members of the division originated from communities throughout the
entire country so the term All American was utilized and explains the presence of the distinctive AA
on the division s shoulder patch. The division saw limited involvement during the First World War as
it saw service in only three battles but one of the most famous characters emerging from the War,
Sergeant York, was a member of the 82nd Airborne. Sergeant York was honored with the Medal of
Honor for his efforts in single handily killing a number of Germans and capturing over a hundred of
other German soldiers during the Meuse Argonne offensive (Pushies). Following the end of the First
World War, the division, consistent with the nation s intent to withdraw from international affairs, was
disbanded but as the United States began to prepare for entry into the Second World War the unit was
reactivated. This time, however, the activities of the division were altered from being a routine
infantry unit into the country s first army division dedicated to airborne activities and its name was
changed from being the 82nd Division to its present designation as the 82nd Airborne. As an airborne
unit, the 82nd was at the forefront in battles in Sicily, Salerno, Normandy and Holland where its

The French Nuclear Power Program
Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy provides France with most of its energy needs, about 80%. This type
of energy also emits almost no greenhouse gases, which is great for the Earth. France with this type of
energy meets its demand and even sells some energy for a profit in neighboring countries. Many
mistakes have been made in the production of energy using nuclear power plants, but if done right it
may be our future. Nuclear energy can be produced safely as shown in France in their French Nuclear
Power program (https//www.nuclearinfo.net). This program was launched in 1975 after the oil crisis
struck. Nuclear reactors are very complicated and can be dangerous unless they are safely managed.
The atom undergoes fission and it splits into smaller particles and releases energy. The incredible part
is that about 1 gram of Uranium produces as much energy as 3 tonnes coal which is 3000 kilograms.
With nuclear energy we would be wasting 3 million times less material compared to the other types of
energy sources like coal and other types of fossil fuels. This decreases the amount of waste produced
from manufacturing energy. There are different types of nuclear reactors and some of the common
ones are Pressurized Water Reactor, Boiling Water Reactor, High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor,
and Heavy Water Reactor. All of these types of reactors are all around world. The power plants have
factors such as control, safety, refueling, waste production and efficiency. To have control

The Role Of Liberal Values At The International Level
4. By using its influence to diminish the role of liberal values at the international level
As China is becoming a global power today, China s views on liberal values are gaining a greater
share in the global marketplace of ideas negatively affects America s national interests, since its
growing power and the example of its development could have considerable ideological influence
upon other countries.
China s economic rising power has deflected international criticism of its records of democratization
and human rights. Human rights issues have indeed been given less importance during high level
official visits. Today, the U.S. president seldom directly demands the release of Chinese political and
religious dissidents. Under such circumstance, the United States and China are competing directly for
impact upon shaping the international rules and norms. China has been highly supporting recent
initiatives such as the G20, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the New Development Bank of
the BRICS countries, and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, in which Western
governments play a significantly smaller role than in longer existing institutions, such as WTO,
NATO, etc.
In addition to that, as I have argued before, although China does not fight against liberal democracy
with a counter ideology, it does approach the potential norm of promoting liberal democratic values
with the norm of international diversity.
The concept of international diversity is that

The, The Fire, And The Rope
By far Dana showed the most relevance to the novel. She impacted on Rufus s decisions and made
him think for himself. Dana is an African American woman in her late 20 s teleporting back in time
during the antebellum to her old ancestors, which later she discovers about, and also is considered a
slave. Dana has connected to every character throughout the novel. Rufus, Sarah, Alice and many
more. Throughout her journey to Maryland during the 1700 s and 1800 s she learned many things, like
believing only in herself. To begin with, Rufus s life depended on Dana, since she was the only one
who knew how to help him every time he got into a problem. The novel s chapters correlate with
every situation Rufus got into; the river, the fire, the fall, the fight, the storm, and the rope. The reason
Dana saves Rufus s life is because later on she discovers that he is her great, great ancestor whom she
had to save, to save herself. This shows the relevance of her presence there, not only she cared for
Rufus, but also considered herself as the one who supposed to help him. Another example that shows
Dana s relevance in the novel is by helping other slaves. For example, Alice, after the fight between
Isaac and Rufus because of Rufus s attempt to rape Alice who apparently was Isaac s wife. The reason
this shows her relevance to the novel because once again, she saves Rufus from being killed by Isaac
after her try to convince them to run and Rufus will let them escape without telling

Effects Of British Rule On India
By the late 1700s, industrially made goods were gaining popularity in Europe. With all of the
factories, the British needed resources to continue making all of the products that were in high
demand. In the early 1700s, India s government was falling apart. With their political vulnerability and
great climate for growing crops, India was ideal territory for the British to take advantage of. The East
India Company, a British company, took workers and land after victoriously beating India in the Battle
of Plassey. Over time the company gained control of more and more land. When Britain took control
of India, they set up a new government, opened up trade with other countries, made efforts to preserve

(Paragraph 6). What he didn t mention, is that after building it, they largely took control over the
government, not allowing the people that were native to the country to run it themselves, which might
ve factored into the split of the country of India after it was granted independence from Britain
(Document 1). When British administration began, new trades were put in place (Paragraph 10), and
the farmers in India were taught how to use their land for profit by growing cash crops, but in doing
so, also degraded the earth, causing the climate to warm, and leaving the soil malnourished and unfit
for growing any more crops (Document 7). Last, although teaching the people of India the English

all is, you have to dig deeper. According to the director William Friedkin the film is really about, the
constant struggle within all of us ... of goodness and evil . In order to understand this battle it is
necessary to indicate what in this film constitutes good ; what constitutes evil ; and maybe the most
import which side wins? The force of good is represented through god, the church, and the agents of
the church ,but how did these figures representing good stand up against the evil of the demon? To be
fair, neither the priests or Regan are the true warriors in this battle between good and evil. The

The demon plans to prey on anyone he can get his claws on.Regan may be the one that the demon
possessed, but she was not the only one it has wicked plans for. During the exorcism, Father Karras
asks Father Merrin: Why this girl? It doesn t make sense. Father Merrin answers, I think the point is to
make us despair. To see ourselves as animal and ugly. To reject the possibility that God could love us.
In this sense, the priests are just as much a target as the little girl. This is even clearer in the
conversation that the demon and Karras had earlier in the film. What an excellent day for an exorcism,
the demon commented to him. You would like that? Karras asked. Intensely, the demon answered. But
wouldn t that drive you out of Regan? Karras pressed. The demon answered that it would bring them
together. You and Regan? Karras asked. You and us, the demon answered and It was quite correct. It is

The Economic And Monetary Union ( Emu ) And The Future Of...
WHAT ARE THE MAIN CAUSES FOR SUCH A CRISIS TO OCCUR?
The debt crisis, explained above, in several member states of the euro area has contributed in raising
doubts about the viability of European Economic and Monetary Union(EMU) and the future of the
euro.
While the launch of the euro in 1999 created a considerable enthusiasm toward regional monetary
integration and even monetary unification in different parts of the world, the present emergency had
the inverse impact, actually raising desires of a separation of the euro region. The emergency has
shown the issues and pressures that will inescapably emerge inside a fiscal union when uneven
characters develop and get to be unsustainable. The reason for the European emergency will be further

The nation has then ended up unable to get or even move over existing obligation except at

The divulgence of the genuine Greek monetary circumstance raised genuine questions about the
nation s capability to meet its obligations. The following rating downsizes and steadily climbing
premium rates prompted a deterioration of Greece s right to gain entrance to capital markets that made
it significantly more troublesome and in the end incomprehensible for the legislature to refinance
itself, creating a down spiral for the Greek economy. So by then, the Government needed to speak to
its fellow members of the European Union and IMF for bailout. The bailout, then again, failed to
restore market trust in the Greek economy. In addition, it failed to end the contagion of the crisis to
other nations of the euro area.
Specifically, the Greek crisis and the hesitant political reaction from the other European nations raised
concerns over the debt circumstance and the structural and competitiveness issues of the financially
weaker periphery member nations of the euro area, named PIIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and
Spain). As an outcome, the borrowing costs for the PIIGS expanded fundamentally and the expense of

Essay about It s Time to Reform the Endangered Species Act
It s Time to Reform the Endangered Species Act
In 1973, Congress passed the Endangered Species Act. The Act was passed in response to findings by
Congress that growth and development were responsible for the extinction of species of fish, wildlife
and plants.
This Act was to provide programs to protect species identified as either endangered or threatened. It
also mandated Federal agencies and departments to protect endangered and threatened species in their
own operations, as well as work with State and local agencies to further promote conservation and
protection of identified species.
By the definition of the Endangered Species Act, a species covered by the legislation is either

The National Wildlife Institute has published Conservation Under the Endangered Species Act: A
Promise Broken . Their critique of the Act includes questioning the programs undertaken as a result of
the Act have played sufficient roles in the recovery of species that were delisted, as well as
questioning the allocation of funding to programs intended to aid listed species.
The National Endangered Species Act Reform Coalition is questioning the effectiveness of the Act, as
well as its impact on people. Pointing to the poor progress of removing species from the Endangered
and Threatened lists, the group calls on reform of the Act, to reform the methods for determining
eligibility for listing, opening the listing and regulatory processes of the Act to include participation
from all groups affected by the legislation, and providing more incentives for private citizens and
businesses to pro actively participate in conservation of listed species.
MY OPINION
While well intended, the Act has some shortcomings, as indicated by the lack of progress in getting
species off the list. This indicates that the programs that are part of the Act are failing to accomplish
their mandated objective.
Also, while biodiversity is crucial to protect, there are natural processes

Orangutans
Orangutans

In Malay orang means person and utan is defined as forest . Thus
Orangutan literally means Person of the Forest . Orangutans are found in the tropical forests of
Sumatra and Borneo. They are the most arboreal of the great apes and move amongst the safety of the
trees from one feeding site to the next.
They are so well adapted to arboreal life that they cannot place their feet on the ground, instead they
walk on the outside of their curved foot. There is a scattered population of orangutan in Indonesian

The long call of the Borneo male is long and drawn out where as the Sumatran is much shorter and
has a faster tempo. The difference may be attributed to the larger throat pouch the
Borneo has. The reason for the different calls is unclear. They may be related to the terrain each
subspecies inhabits. The faster call of the Sumatran may be more effective in the rugged, mountainous
terrain. The longer call of the
Borneo may be due to the wide distribution of this race. A large portion of an orangutans day is spent
looking for and consuming food. Their diet primarily consists of fruit but they also eat leaves, bark,
flowers, insects, and birds eggs. One of their preferred foods is the fruit off of the durian tree, it is
supposed to taste like sweet garlic. After they have finished eating and bedtime comes around the
orangutans build themselves a new nest forty to fifty feet up in a tree made of boughs. Like the other
great apes (chimpanzees and gorillas), orangutans are highly intelligent. Tests have indicated that their
intelligence is relatively similar. Wild orangutans use their intelligence to solve problems usually
related to arboreal living and food gathering. In captivity, however, they have been trained to perform
tricks and to use sign language. They have also made tools to throw at humans, get food, and gain
leverage.

Theme Of Trust In A White Heron
The theme of trust occurs many times in A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett, and is very important
to the short story. In the story, a young girl named Sylvia faces the challenge of trust. She must decide
if she should reveal the location of the white heron to the man that she meets in the woods, or if she
will keep the location of the white heron a secret. Ultimately, trust plays a major role in Sylvia s
decision making, and the short story shows that trust is a very valuable possession which must be
earned and not given.
The first time Sylvia is faced with the challenge of trust is when she initially meets the man in the
woods. As she is walking home one evening, she hears a boy whistling at her. At first she is afraid of
the stranger, but eventually she allows him to walk along the road with her, and when they arrive at

of the story that she cannot just trust any person. The hunter has actually done nothing to earn her trust
other than promise her ten dollars and accompany her in the woods one day. On the other hand, she
knows she can trust the feelings in her heart because she can relate to the white heron. She used to live

The Endocrinology Of Male And Female Reproduction
Reproductive physiology is comprised of many tightly coordinated functions of the endocrine system
including the hypothalamus, pituitary and reproductive organs whose dynamic function plays several
critical roles in growth and development as well was reproduction. The hypothalamic pituitary
gonadal axis plays a critical role in the development and regulation of the reproductive system. These
tightly regulated functions within the pituitary must respond to continuously changing signals from the
central nervous system gonads and provide the quick responses. The hypothalamic pituitary gonadal
axis is comprised of major hormones, including gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), luteinizing
hormone (LH) and follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) and operate through both positive and
negative feedback loops in mammals.1 When toxicants affect any part of this axis s function, either by
altering cellular activity or the signals themselves, the physiology can impacted by immediate and
downstream effects. An understanding of the endocrinology of male and female reproduction, is
required to understand how toxicological effects can have severe consequences on reproductive
physiology.
GnRH is a prominent reproductive hormone that is produced in neural cells in the hypothalamus.
GnRH is secreted into the bloodstream where it is carried downstream to the pituitary gland and
activates the Gonadotropin Releasing hormone receptor. 2 Once these cells are activated, signal

Can A Patient Be Forced to Take Medication If There Is No Medical Emergency? In this case, the
patient John Rennie, a former pilot, had been in and out of mental health facilities in the state of New
Jersey since his twin brother died in 1973 in an airplane accident. Between 1973 and 1977 he had been
treated both inpatient and outpatient, numerous times, per the court record, at least 11 times. He had
been diagnosed with various mental health issues which included paranoia, schizophrenia, and manic
depression. He had even suffered from delusions and had made threats to kill the President. During the
series of treatments, Rennie would occasionally refuse to take the prescribed medication given to him
by the treatment staff. The record also indicated that during his treatment Rennie had been in frequent
fights with other patients as well as the staff, and had gone through suicidal and delusional stages. In
1977, Rennie filed a suit in the New Jersey Circuit Court, against the Ancora Psychiatric Hospital,
arguing that the treatment being forced upon him violated his right to privacy. The ruling, in that case,
was that although a patient had the right to refuse treatment, certain circumstances can take priority
above that the rights of the patient. The court mentioned the following considerations; 1) Is the patient
a danger to either themselves, other patients or to the staff at the institution? 2) Does the patient posed

Power Of Music Research Paper
The Power of Music
Everyone knows the story of the Piped Piper of Hamelin. He had the ability to hypnotize people with
his flute by playing the most enchanting music. But he s just myth, right? No one has the power to
charm people with music. Well, you d be surprised. Throughout history, music has always been
recognized for its calming and almost hypnotic effects on the human mind, and for its ability to rouse
and inspire the spirit. Only recently has science uncovered the truth about music. Researchers have
long suspected that music affects the brain in the most profound ways, and now they finally have
evidence to back up that theory. Such an interesting topic definitely deserves further exploration.

Music s calming effects can extend to children as well, as directors at Young Imaginations have seen
for themselves. Young Imaginations is a private arts agency that provides music programs for 30
California schools. Executive director Marianne Locke speaks of their findings: When we play
traditional Japanese and Chinese music or other slow pieces and pair them with movements, such as
yoga and T ai Chi, the children become calmer and more able to focus their attention. (Cassidy 48)
Following up on this observation, the organization is setting up an independent study to determine if
children are calmer and perform better on certain learning tasks when exposed to slower and calmer
pieces of music. In a separate and totally unrelated study, Harvard researcher Jerome Kagan reported a
very interesting finding. If you present an interesting visual stimulus to a baby, it becomes aroused and
begins to move its arms and legs, Kagan noted. [However,] if you play some music that interests them,
they do the opposite they quiet down. There is a very different psychological reaction to sound. (Knox
A6) Music s affect on children have only recently been documented and published. Although the
aforementioned calming effects of music have not been explained by scientists, they now know that
the brains of infants are capable of extraordinary feats. New research shows that brain development is
largely unfinished at birth and that the stimuli a

The Importance Of Injudice In To Kill A Mockingbird
Our forefathers once said that all men were created equal, but our society does not seem to
acknowledge that message. In truth, no one is seen as an equal to another person; there is always a
partial judgmental factor that comes into play when viewing another person. As humans, it is our
nature to judge and assume things before we really understand the true meaning and value of it.
Throughout history, prejudice has been a common theme in every society, from the Romans to the
colonists. It has only been recognized as a major problem recently that was slowly tearing up the
foundation of nations around the world, creating misconceptions between people while building up a
toxic environment. Harper Lee s famous book, To Kill a Mockingbird, depicts a young girl, Scout,
growing up in the Jim Crow era, trying to understand the prejudice and racism that was so commonly
used in her community. Similarly, Tim Wise s article, No Innocence Left to Kill: Racism, Injustice and
Explaining America to My Daughter leaves people wondering how prejudice is indirectly affecting
children and their mindsets. Both authors suggest a common theme, that prejudice affects everyone,
old or young, scarring them, and creating a larger gap in society because it isolating people from one
another out of misconceptions. Both documents show that prejudice can start influencing kids at a
young age and can affect their mindset for the following years. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee

Analysis Of The Crystal Gems Essay
Steven Universe is a TV show on Cartoon Network that centers around a fourteen year old human
gem alien hybrid named Steven and his three gem alien guardians who seek to protect the earth from
their home planet. His mother, Rose Quartz, led a rebellion group called The Crystal Gems against her
home planet to thwart their plans to colonize the Earth. Years later, she died giving birth to Steven. For
a children s show, it has covered many topics, including defying the gender norm, mental illness, and
abusive relationships. The relationship of two characters, Jasper and Lapis Lazuli, is a sensitive topic
of discussion among fans and critics alike. There are three points of view on the subject. They include
that Jasper is the abuser, Lapis is the abuser, and the relationship was mutually abusive. When
considering the characteristics that make a relationship abusive, and how the relationship is being
portrayed in the show, all the evidence points to Lapis Lazuli as the abuser. On the show, the alien
gems practice fusion, which is a process of combining the forms of two (or more) gems to form a
single entity. Fusions are usually used for combative purposes, but can symbolize many types of
relationships ranging to healthy and unhealthy. While Jasper and Lapis Lazuli s relationship was
neither romantic or platonic, their fusion is heavily implied to represent an abusive relationship. Jasper

Nursing Case Studies Septic Shock
Analysis of Disease: Septic Shock
Septic shock, a potentially lethal drop in blood pressure due to infection, is not completely understood
even with the progress made in science and medicine throughout the years (Heuther McCance, 2012).
It is one of the most common causes of death in the intensive care unit (ICUs) in the United States of
America each year, with a mortality rate of 28 to 60 percent (Heuther McCance, 2012, p. 632). Septic
shock is most commonly caused by bacteria, often gram positive bacteria, acquired while in the
hospital, and those who have conditions that reduce their ability to fight infection are most at risk
(Young, 2008). This at risk population includes newborns, those over 35 years old, those with diabetes

The treatment of septic shock requires hospital admission as soon as the diagnosis is suspected,
although most cases do occur while an individual is already hospitalized (Kalil, 2014, Treatment
section, para. 1; Young, 2008, Causes section, para. 1). Treatment includes the use of antibiotics,
support of respiratory and circulatory function, supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, and
intravenous fluid in large amounts (Kalil, 2014, Treatment section). Hemodynamic monitoring, which
is the monitoring of pressure in the heart and lungs, may also be used in the treatment of septic shock
(Hadjiliadis et al., 2014). Drugs, such as dopamine or norepinephrine (which cause blood vessels to
narrow), may be needed to increase blood flow to the brain, heart, and other organs (Young, 2008,
Treatment section, para. 4). In cases where the infection is localized or the etiology is completely
unknown, surgery may be necessary to help to correct and treat the septic shock (Kalil, 2014,

Why Should We Make Decisions On Experiences That They...
able to make decisions on experiences that they themselves could not understand. This really raised a
lot of questions to me about who is in power and how big of a problem it is the those in power are not
more diverse. We have struggled in society and have imprisoned so many behind stone walls of
racism, sexism, and homophobia (Rudacille 140).
It also raised awareness that the very same acts done by heterosexual couples were acceptable, and not
punishable in the confines of the home, but that gays were not even safe in private. After the decision
in Lawrence v Texas made by the U.S. Supreme Court, it was understood that the gay community had
a chance to move forward into the light even more, and that their fight for freedom would not
disappear. By declaring that it is unconstitutional to make arrests against gays in the home, it also
declared that homosexuals should have the same rights as everyone else. It made it more acceptable
and brought homosexuality into the light to where it was okay to talk about and dispute. Not only was
it just an invasion of liberty, as the Court thought , but also the case enforced a bad law, a Homosexual
Status Law, which made being gay a crime.
In writing this paper, I went back to the very beginning of our discussions, and looked at my very first
discussion post on the Stonewall Uprising. I realized, that while we did do a lot of court case focused
work, that I still learned a lot even outside of these cases. I wanted to post both my

Dystopian Fiction Essay
INTRO:
Dystopian fictions are worlds that distortedly reflect our own; exaggerating and extorting aspects of
our society within a foreign, and often, futuristic setting. In comparison to Utopian fiction, a dystopian
story depicts cruel and harsh universes where ruling themes are things such as inequality, loss of
freedom and environmental degradation. All these traits are commonalities also found within our own
society, dystopic fiction inflates them to the point where they become the focal aspect of the world we
are critiquing. Some such examples of dystopic texts include the book, The Handmaid s Tale , the
2006 movie, V for Vendetta , the short novella, Animal Farm , and Kinji Fukasaku s controversial
film, Battle Royale . These visual and literary representations of the dystopic genre portray to us ...

All four texts are dystopic in nature, the formulation of each community and their descent into a

within the text, V for Vendetta , the fascist government isolates the homosexuals within the

The book How the Other Half lives, is one of those books that definitely affects you as soon as you

how each ethnic group lived in the tenements, and what the city did to improve them.

Technology Is Good For Communication
The world in today, a concept of global village , that mean in the earth are no nation or group have

also some of the country change the color of their main building to blue, white and red and produce

smaller and smaller, we can be more easily to communication with someone who are from other

Well, projects to better the people of Honduras can be funded to give them the quality that humans deserve to make a living. For example, the average annual income of families of Honduras is less than six hundred dollars. Even government funded schools most children can t afford to go to because of the cost of uniforms and school supplies. A reason that the people of Honduras should be supported is because the average annual income is around a meager 580 American Dollars. Honduras provides free public education through fifth grade, but sadly many students cannot attend due to the cost of school supplies and uniforms. Many projects funding Hondurans are for money to buy foodstuffs for re sale. The people need the profit from selling these items to afford the cost of their children going to school. If their children can receive an education, they will be able to get better paying jobs, ending the poverty cycle in that family line. The last reason why we should contribute to funding for Hondurans is there is a high population growth rate and more people means more food is needed. According to Fowler (2003), the agile software engineering processes attempt to enable more flexible and adaptive software development than the traditional software engineering processes offer. Agile practitioners consider documentation as an important aspect for their projects but there is too little internal documentation available in their projects (Stettina and Heijstek, 2011). Although the documentation is mentioned, it is not anchored in the original process that relies on verbal communication (Schwaber and Beedle, 2001). Verbal communication is susceptible to lapses of memory and after some time it gets progressively harder to recall design rationale. This problem is compounded by team turnaround (Stettina and Heijstek, 2011). The main objective of documenting a project is to instruct consumers about the structure of the system, its functionality, operability and the design structure in case there is need to redesign the system. The primary consumers of the design documentation are those who maintain or upgrade the system. Other stakeholders, such as users, testers, and project managers may also need to know about the system (Selic, B., 2009). However, according to Bran Selic, (2009) software developers do not like to document, as it has no value for them. Even the agile manifesto, issued by the software industry s avant garde, proclaims Working software ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Shema Yisrael is considered by many to be the most essential prayer of all of Judaism, and is an affirmation of God s singularity and kingship. It is not only recited daily by traditional observing Jews, but also, according to the My Jewish Learning website at the climactic moment of the final prayer of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement and considered the holiest day of the year, and traditionally as the last words before death. The words for the beginning portion of the prayer that Ešenvalds uses for the pieces are as follows; Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad. Ten concepts are identified and defined from Chapter readings. Following definitions, examples from the novel of these concepts are shown. Ethnocentrism is defined as the tendency to judge other people and cultures by the standards of one s own culture and to believe that the behavior, customs, norms, values and other characteristics of one s own group are natural, valid, and correct while those of other s are unnatural, invalid and incorrect. Firoozeh is enrolled in American schools and is formally taught. Later in life she attends Berkeley and funds her learning mostly through scholarship applications. Informal learning is not characterized by a defined curriculum and is generally picked up by means of observation and imitation. The responsibility of the learning usually falls on the learner and is generally picked up from extended family members. One of the largest breakthroughs, though, is Artificial Intelligence (A.I.). The technology associated with A.I. has greatly developed in the past years, and is only making devices smarter. When someone mentions technology, or even the technological breakthroughs the world has gone through recently, many people go straight to smartphones and computers. A.I. is often overlooked, or put into a general category of technology . Yet, artificial intelligence is something that should we not be so quick to dismiss, and should be something that gets people talking and even excited for what the future holds. For those who do not know, artificial intelligence is exactly what is called, an intelligence through a computer that is artificially created by humans. A.I. is defined to be able to learn and use the information it learns to produce thoughts of its own, almost as if it were a thinking human. Though many may believe A.I. is just a robot which is able to speak and understand humans, it is much more than that. A.I. technologies are being implemented in smartphones, homes, cars, watches, headphones, and is also being developed to work in many more ways that help give humanity an easier life. • 15. Death Of The Victorian Era Essay Throughout the world, death plays a fundamental role, it is unavoidable and everyone will experience it at some point in their lives. In contemporary western societies, death is accepted as such, and is organised for, with people years before their death preparing wills and funerals for when their day finally comes. However, for many, death still comes as a surprise, and most will always try and do anything to prolong their lives and grasp at immortality. Yet this wasn t always the case, during the Victorian era, whilst people still mourned and grieved, death was an accepted part of life. From the Victorian era to now, death has both changed and stayed the same in many different ways, from the way in which people die, to organising their death, and to the role medicine plays. The quest for immortality has been around for hundreds of years, but in recent years, it has become less of a folktale involving monsters, and instead is becoming far more believable. Whilst immortality will likely not be seen for many generations, if ever, the idea has taken hold that science and modern medicine can prolong life, and death no longer has to be an unavoidable point. Preliminary Argument Due to advancements in science and modern medicine, as well as the taboo on death and the rise of the quest for immortality, people are becoming far less prepared mentally for death, and no longer accept death as fact. The Beetroot discs will become flaccid and decrease in mass if the water potential of the surrounding solution is lower than the water potential inside the beetroot cell. This has been shown by a steady increase in Anthon cyanine leaked out of plant cells as the concentration and temperature increases. The purpose of a cell membrane is to control the transport of substances moving into and out of a cell. The membrane is an extremely thin layer (8 to 10 nanometers (nm)) thick, which is partially permeable. It consists mostly of lipids and proteins. The lipids found in cell membranes belong to a class known as triglycerides, so called because they have one molecule of glycerol chemically linked to three molecules of fatty acids. The majority belong to one subgroup of triglycerides known as phospholipids. The cell membrane is made up of a phospholipid bilayer. The hydrophobic tails of the detergent molecules are taken up by this bilayer. The detergent s hydrophilic heads will then repel (Micelle, an electrically charge particle built up from polymer molecules or ions and occurring in certain colloidal electrolytic solutions like soaps and detergents) the individual phospholipids and this will mean they are disrupted . The detergent will then enter the cell, and the tonoplast surrounding the membrane. Therefore, the higher concentration of detergent, the more detergent molecules, and this means there is more chance of the extra detergent molecules being taken up by the cell membranes. History of the 82nd Airborne Division of the US Air Force Although the 82nd Airborne was organized in 1917 during America s involvement in the First World War it was during the Second World War that the unit gained its reputation. Its distinctive name was garnered from the fact that members of the division originated from communities throughout the entire country so the term All American was utilized and explains the presence of the distinctive AA on the division s shoulder patch. The division saw limited involvement during the First World War as it saw service in only three battles but one of the most famous characters emerging from the War, Sergeant York, was a member of the 82nd Airborne. Sergeant York was honored with the Medal of Honor for his efforts in single handily killing a number of Germans and capturing over a hundred of other German soldiers during the Meuse Argonne offensive (Pushies). Following the end of the First World War, the division, consistent with the nation s intent to withdraw from international affairs, was disbanded but as the United States began to prepare for entry into the Second World War the unit was reactivated. This type of energy also emits almost no greenhouse gases, which is great for the Earth. France with this type of energy meets its demand and even sells some energy for a profit in neighboring countries. Many mistakes have been made in the production of energy using nuclear power plants, but if done right it may be our future. Nuclear energy can be produced safely as shown in France in their French Nuclear Power program (https//www.nuclearinfo.net). This program was launched in 1975 after the oil crisis struck. Nuclear reactors are very complicated and can be dangerous unless they are safely managed. The atom undergoes fission and it splits into smaller particles and releases energy. The incredible part is that about 1 gram of Uranium produces as much energy as 3 tonnes coal which is 3000 kilograms. With nuclear energy we would be wasting 3 million times less material compared to the other types of energy sources like coal and other types of fossil fuels. This decreases the amount of waste produced from manufacturing energy. There are different types of nuclear reactors and some of the common ones are Pressurized Water Reactor, Boiling Water Reactor, High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor, and Heavy Water Reactor. By using its influence to diminish the role of liberal values at the international level As China is becoming a global power today, China s views on liberal values are gaining a greater share in the global marketplace of ideas negatively affects America s national interests, since its growing power and the example of its development could have considerable ideological influence upon other countries. China s economic rising power has deflected international criticism of its records of democratization and human rights. Human rights issues have indeed been given less importance during high level official visits. Today, the U.S. president seldom directly demands the release of Chinese political and religious dissidents. Under such circumstance, the United States and China are competing directly for impact upon shaping the international rules and norms. China has been highly supporting recent initiatives such as the G20, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank, the New Development Bank of the BRICS countries, and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, in which Western governments play a significantly smaller role than in longer existing institutions, such as WTO, NATO, etc. In addition to that, as I have argued before, although China does not fight against liberal democracy with a counter ideology, it does approach the potential norm of promoting liberal democratic values with the norm of international diversity. Dana is an African American woman in her late 20 s teleporting back in time during the antebellum to her old ancestors, which later she discovers about, and also is considered a slave. Dana has connected to every character throughout the novel. Rufus, Sarah, Alice and many more. Throughout her journey to Maryland during the 1700 s and 1800 s she learned many things, like believing only in herself. To begin with, Rufus s life depended on Dana, since she was the only one who knew how to help him every time he got into a problem. The novel s chapters correlate with every situation Rufus got into; the river, the fire, the fall, the fight, the storm, and the rope. The reason Dana saves Rufus s life is because later on she discovers that he is her great, great ancestor whom she had to save, to save herself. This shows the relevance of her presence there, not only she cared for Rufus, but also considered herself as the one who supposed to help him. Another example that shows Dana s relevance in the novel is by helping other slaves. For example, Alice, after the fight between Isaac and Rufus because of Rufus s attempt to rape Alice who apparently was Isaac s wife. The longer call of the Borneo may be due to the wide distribution of this race. A large portion of an orangutans day is spent looking for and consuming food. • 30. Theme Of Trust In A White Heron The theme of trust occurs many times in A White Heron by Sarah Orne Jewett, and is very important to the short story. In the story, a young girl named Sylvia faces the challenge of trust. She must decide if she should reveal the location of the white heron to the man that she meets in the woods, or if she will keep the location of the white heron a secret. Ultimately, trust plays a major role in Sylvia s decision making, and the short story shows that trust is a very valuable possession which must be earned and not given. The first time Sylvia is faced with the challenge of trust is when she initially meets the man in the woods. As she is walking home one evening, she hears a boy whistling at her. At first she is afraid of the stranger, but eventually she allows him to walk along the road with her, and when they arrive at her house, Sylvia s grandmother offers him a ... The heron choose the big pine tree because it trusted that the tree would hide it from danger because it is the oldest and strongest tree in the forest. The hunter has actually done nothing to earn her trust other than promise her ten dollars and accompany her in the woods one day. On the other hand, she knows she can trust the feelings in her heart because she can relate to the white heron. She used to live in the city, which made her feel like a caged bird, but when she moved to the country she experienced complete freedom just like the heron. Because she knew what the white heron felt like while free in the wild and what it would feel like if she revealed its location to the hunter, she trusted the feelings in her heart and kept its location secret, which was her final ... The Endocrinology Of Male And Female Reproduction Reproductive physiology is comprised of many tightly coordinated functions of the endocrine system including the hypothalamus, pituitary and reproductive organs whose dynamic function plays several critical roles in growth and development as well was reproduction. The hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis plays a critical role in the development and regulation of the reproductive system. These tightly regulated functions within the pituitary must respond to continuously changing signals from the central nervous system gonads and provide the quick responses. The hypothalamic pituitary gonadal axis is comprised of major hormones, including gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) and operate through both positive and negative feedback loops in mammals.1 When toxicants affect any part of this axis s function, either by altering cellular activity or the signals themselves, the physiology can impacted by immediate and downstream effects. An understanding of the endocrinology of male and female reproduction, is required to understand how toxicological effects can have severe consequences on reproductive physiology. GnRH is a prominent reproductive hormone that is produced in neural cells in the hypothalamus. GnRH is secreted into the bloodstream where it is carried downstream to the pituitary gland and activates the Gonadotropin Releasing hormone receptor. 2 Once these cells are activated, signal transduction ... In this case, the patient John Rennie, a former pilot, had been in and out of mental health facilities in the state of New Jersey since his twin brother died in 1973 in an airplane accident. Between 1973 and 1977 he had been treated both inpatient and outpatient, numerous times, per the court record, at least 11 times. He had been diagnosed with various mental health issues which included paranoia, schizophrenia, and manic depression. He had even suffered from delusions and had made threats to kill the President. During the series of treatments, Rennie would occasionally refuse to take the prescribed medication given to him by the treatment staff. The record also indicated that during his treatment Rennie had been in frequent fights with other patients as well as the staff, and had gone through suicidal and delusional stages. In 1977, Rennie filed a suit in the New Jersey Circuit Court, against the Ancora Psychiatric Hospital, arguing that the treatment being forced upon him violated his right to privacy. The ruling, in that case, was that although a patient had the right to refuse treatment, certain circumstances can take priority above that the rights of the patient. The court mentioned the following considerations; 1) Is the patient a danger to either themselves, other patients or to the staff at the institution? 2) Does the patient posed the mental ability to determine the best method of ... He had the ability to hypnotize people with his flute by playing the most enchanting music. But he s just myth, right? No one has the power to charm people with music. Well, you d be surprised. Throughout history, music has always been recognized for its calming and almost hypnotic effects on the human mind, and for its ability to rouse and inspire the spirit. Only recently has science uncovered the truth about music. Researchers have long suspected that music affects the brain in the most profound ways, and now they finally have evidence to back up that theory. Music s calming effects can extend to children as well, as directors at Young Imaginations have seen for themselves. Young Imaginations is a private arts agency that provides music programs for 30 California schools. Executive director Marianne Locke speaks of their findings: When we play traditional Japanese and Chinese music or other slow pieces and pair them with movements, such as yoga and T ai Chi, the children become calmer and more able to focus their attention. (Cassidy 48) Following up on this observation, the organization is setting up an independent study to determine if children are calmer and perform better on certain learning tasks when exposed to slower and calmer pieces of music. In a separate and totally unrelated study, Harvard researcher Jerome Kagan reported a very interesting finding. If you present an interesting visual stimulus to a baby, it becomes aroused and begins to move its arms and legs, Kagan noted. [However,] if you play some music that interests them, they do the opposite they quiet down. There is a very different psychological reaction to sound. (Knox A6) Music s affect on children have only recently been documented and published. Although the aforementioned calming effects of music have not been explained by scientists, they now know that the brains of infants are capable of extraordinary feats. • 36. The Importance Of Injudice In To Kill A Mockingbird Our forefathers once said that all men were created equal, but our society does not seem to acknowledge that message. In truth, no one is seen as an equal to another person; there is always a partial judgmental factor that comes into play when viewing another person. As humans, it is our nature to judge and assume things before we really understand the true meaning and value of it. Throughout history, prejudice has been a common theme in every society, from the Romans to the colonists. It has only been recognized as a major problem recently that was slowly tearing up the foundation of nations around the world, creating misconceptions between people while building up a toxic environment. Harper Lee s famous book, To Kill a Mockingbird, depicts a young girl, Scout, growing up in the Jim Crow era, trying to understand the prejudice and racism that was so commonly used in her community. Similarly, Tim Wise s article, No Innocence Left to Kill: Racism, Injustice and Explaining America to My Daughter leaves people wondering how prejudice is indirectly affecting children and their mindsets. Both authors suggest a common theme, that prejudice affects everyone, old or young, scarring them, and creating a larger gap in society because it isolating people from one another out of misconceptions. Both documents show that prejudice can start influencing kids at a young age and can affect their mindset for the following years. In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee ... • 37. Analysis Of The Crystal Gems Essay Steven Universe is a TV show on Cartoon Network that centers around a fourteen year old human gem alien hybrid named Steven and his three gem alien guardians who seek to protect the earth from their home planet. His mother, Rose Quartz, led a rebellion group called The Crystal Gems against her home planet to thwart their plans to colonize the Earth. Years later, she died giving birth to Steven. For a children s show, it has covered many topics, including defying the gender norm, mental illness, and abusive relationships. The relationship of two characters, Jasper and Lapis Lazuli, is a sensitive topic of discussion among fans and critics alike. There are three points of view on the subject. They include that Jasper is the abuser, Lapis is the abuser, and the relationship was mutually abusive. When considering the characteristics that make a relationship abusive, and how the relationship is being portrayed in the show, all the evidence points to Lapis Lazuli as the abuser. On the show, the alien gems practice fusion, which is a process of combining the forms of two (or more) gems to form a single entity. Fusions are usually used for combative purposes, but can symbolize many types of relationships ranging to healthy and unhealthy. While Jasper and Lapis Lazuli s relationship was neither romantic or platonic, their fusion is heavily implied to represent an abusive relationship. Nursing Case Studies Septic Shock Analysis of Disease: Septic Shock Septic shock, a potentially lethal drop in blood pressure due to infection, is not completely understood even with the progress made in science and medicine throughout the years (Heuther McCance, 2012). It is one of the most common causes of death in the intensive care unit (ICUs) in the United States of America each year, with a mortality rate of 28 to 60 percent (Heuther McCance, 2012, p. 632). Septic shock is most commonly caused by bacteria, often gram positive bacteria, acquired while in the hospital, and those who have conditions that reduce their ability to fight infection are most at risk (Young, 2008). Treatment includes the use of antibiotics, support of respiratory and circulatory function, supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, and intravenous fluid in large amounts (Kalil, 2014, Treatment section). This really raised a lot of questions to me about who is in power and how big of a problem it is the those in power are not more diverse. We have struggled in society and have imprisoned so many behind stone walls of racism, sexism, and homophobia (Rudacille 140). It also raised awareness that the very same acts done by heterosexual couples were acceptable, and not punishable in the confines of the home, but that gays were not even safe in private. After the decision in Lawrence v Texas made by the U.S. Supreme Court, it was understood that the gay community had a chance to move forward into the light even more, and that their fight for freedom would not disappear. By declaring that it is unconstitutional to make arrests against gays in the home, it also declared that homosexuals should have the same rights as everyone else. It made it more acceptable and brought homosexuality into the light to where it was okay to talk about and dispute. Not only was it just an invasion of liberty, as the Court thought , but also the case enforced a bad law, a Homosexual Status Law, which made being gay a crime. In writing this paper, I went back to the very beginning of our discussions, and looked at my very first discussion post on the Stonewall Uprising. Dystopian Fiction Essay INTRO: Dystopian fictions are worlds that distortedly reflect our own; exaggerating and extorting aspects of our society within a foreign, and often, futuristic setting. In comparison to Utopian fiction, a dystopian story depicts cruel and harsh universes where ruling themes are things such as inequality, loss of freedom and environmental degradation. All these traits are commonalities also found within our own society, dystopic fiction inflates them to the point where they become the focal aspect of the world we are critiquing. Some such examples of dystopic texts include the book, The Handmaid s Tale , the 2006 movie, V for Vendetta , the short novella, Animal Farm , and Kinji Fukasaku s controversial film, Battle Royale .
