Stereotypes Of An American Teenager Essay
Single Story Stereotype of the American Teenager
This is a story about the many stereotypes of the everyday American teenager. The teen is
sometimes seen as a snob, brat or very annoying.
Typically they are obsessed with their phone. They are on social media 24/7. If their phone dies
they may do one of two things ask someone for a charging block or find a power slot. If this teen
goes somewhere where there is no wifi they will get upset or very desperate for the passcode if
the wifi is passcode locked. So typically a teen will be technology obsessed. Another version of
teen the criminal teen. This teen is a liar because they seek to harm people or steal. And they have
little regard towards any rules because they go by their rules. ... Show more content on

This teen likes to drink or use drugs and doesn t care about anything because they are using these
things. But if this teen isn t helped they will do anything for cash like stealing, scamming people,
and mugging anybody who is unlucky to stumble across them. And they will burn through the cash
that they have to fuel their craving.
Then there is the best teen ever the kind teen . This teen will help you or anybody In need. He or
she will help someone who has nothing. They are generally the best person. If this teen has cash
and they see anybody on the street they will give as much cash they will get. And this teen will
volunteer in anything from Mission trips, to soup kitchens, and helping build homeless shelters.
This teen isn t afraid to help another s in need.
There is teen also the gamer teen. This teen takes many forms, from the social media person (i.e.
Twitch, YouTube streaming), or the I can t live another minute without my console or gaming
device teen. And there is the gaming rage teen who will continually scream at a person who gets a

Social And Developmental Perspectives Of Psychology
Phinney Ong s (2007) article discusses both the social and developmental perspectives of
psychology in relation to the various components and measurements that are commonly used to
identify ethnic identity within groups. To aid in their discussion, the researchers start by analyzing
the available studies whose research effectually laid the groundwork for the development of both
theoretical models and applicable assessments concerning individual and group ethnic
identification, such as the Multigroup Ethnic IdentityMeasure (MEIM) and the Multigroup Ethnic
Identity Measure Revised (MEIM R). The purpose of this research was for the researchers to be
able to draw their own conclusions regarding modern theories of ethnic identity so that... Show

277). However, Phinney Ong (2007) takes the concept of social identity one step further by
suggesting that a person s ethnic identity is also a form of social identity that develops alongside
the formation of both the ingroup and outgroup mentality. Therefore, individuals who feel strongly
connected to their ethnic group are more likely to identify with and/or behave according to the social
norms and expectations of that group. For example, in studying the differences between the
multicultural theory and the social identity theory, researchers Negy, Shreve, Jensen, Uden (2003)
discovered a strong correlation between individual levels of ethnic identity and levels of
ethnocentrism in both European Americans and Latino/a Americans. However, there was little to
no correlation found among those who identify themselves as African American. Nevertheless,
Phinney Ong (2007) conclude that ethnic identity is multifaceted and research designs and methods
should reflect the multidimensional nature of ethnic identity accordingly.
In addition to evaluating ethnic identity from a variety of psychological or behavioral perspectives,
the article also discusses a number theoretical models for defining ethnic identity. As Phinney Ong
(2007) state, a clear theoretical model, therefore, is a necessary foundation for all

Case Study On GBL
1. As David Ganong, what is your analysis of the situation?
Background The confectionery industry in Canada
The confectionery industry was divided into four major product lines such as sugar confectionery,
chocolates, cocoa based products, and chewing gums. Most Canadian confectionary goods were
produced in Ontario. There were four major multinational chocolate bar companies and Canada was
one of them which means it was quite competitive. I am going to use PESTEL analysis of GBL s
situation.

The Theory Of The Drive Theory
Drive Theory The Drive theory was so named by Freud because of its emphasis on libidinal and
aggressive drives, which Freud considers to be the two principal motivating forces of human
behavior, and which barks for attention and expression. A child at birth is in a state of primary
narcissism, and it clamors to have its needs met irrespective of the comforts of others. The
erogenous zones (mouth, anus and genitals) are the avenues through which the energies are
directed, and by stimulating these areas, the child finds pleasure. If energies are not adequately
released, anxiety results, but as the child develops, it learns to regulate such forces for its ultimate
good and that of others. Freud believes that three components of... Show more content on

If human beings functioned solely from the Id s control center, there would be absolute chaos,
since people will do whatever they wish, whenever they wish, and wherever they wish, irrespective
of consequences. The Ego lives in both the conscious and the unconscious mind, and it represent
the I of the individual. The Ego functions like a good citizen, and acts as an intermediary between
the Id, the superego, and the external environment, to procure socially acceptable behavior. The ego
coordinates volition, and its main business is to protect self. It also regulates and suppresses the
inordinate promptings of the Id through reasoning and compromises, and is capable of delaying
gratification for the future. As maturation ensues, the ego expands, while the id shrinks, except in
special cases where the individual is fixated at the infantile level. Conditioned on the examination
that people with strong egos often have weak ids and superegos, Freud concludes that the relative
distribution of energy among these forces affects personality directly. Top of Form Bottom of Form
The superego is the conscience that grows out of parental prohibitions, and it represents the moral
component of the personality. Through the diminution of early narcissism, when the child begins to
acknowledge its limits, the superego imposes itself as a kind of watchdog over the ego, making
sure that the

Arrogance Of Greek Heroes In Odyssey, Aeneid, And
Arrogance of Greek Heroes
Often readers will criticize the champions of classical and medieval epics for egotism. Critics cite
examples from the Odyssey, the Aeneid, and Beowulf of conceit and egocentric behavior.
Odysseus, Aeneas, and Beowulf display a well known arrogance befitting their accomplishments.
The motivation for this arrogance, to complete these tasks, to perform these feats, is often over
generalized to the point of inaccuracy and confusion. One must not let such misinterpretations
interrupt the humanization of these characters. Through the examination of the desires and
behavior of these epic heroes, we can discover an underlying need for recognition or honor. In
classical and medieval western epics, the hero s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Troy, he elected to follow the advice of the gods and, risking his life in the city, he manages to
steal the Pallas effigy! When the Cyclops Polyphemus captured him, instead of succumbing to fate
or attempting to break free by force, he dupes the giant with wine and blinds him with a hot spear!
His exploits, though certainly incredible, and almost always necessary, are always made more
dangerous and fantastic by his involvement. When escaping Polyphemus, his pride drives him to
tell his name, guaranteeing that the Cyclops will let his deed be known:
...again I began to taunt the Cyclops men around me trying to check me, calm me, left and right:
So headstrong why? Why rile the beast again?
...So they begged, but they could not bring my fighting spirit round.

you who blinded you, shamed you so say Odysseus, raider of cities, he gouged out your eye,

However, this egotism, making sure his foe knows who he is, who his father is, and where he
comes from, serves not only to let his feat be recognized, but also to breed hatred with immortals:

Minimum Driving Age Should Not Be Raised To 18 Essay
The big one six is an age kids look forward to their whole lives. A new found freedom teens gain
when turning sixteen is driving. Driving is a privilege and an incentive for teens, and driving opens
up a world of opportunities to young adults. Some people think teens are too immature to drive and
should wait until adulthood, however the minimum drivingage should not be raised from sixteen to
eighteen. Sixteen should be the age to drive because parents cannot run teens everywhere,
eighteen is a very busy age, and not all teens are immature. Moms and dads have a very busy
schedule. When teens reach the legal driving age a little of the stress parents have on their
shoulders is lifted off. Teens can drive to and from school, practice, extracurricular... Show more

The false assumptions people have about teens is unfair to the teens who are actually
responsible. I as a teen understand how dangerous driving is and how I am responsible for my
passengers lives while at the wheel. Why should the driving privilege given to teens at sixteen
be changed because of a few bad kids? People need not to have a bad outlook on teens just
because some teens are infact immature, but some adults are not very mature either. Teens just
need to not be stereotypes then teenagers would not have any excuse to act up if people expected
more out of them. Sixteen year olds are perfectly capable of driving, and the new found
responsibility could even make teens act more mature. Busy parents, a busy young adult life, and
mature teens are why the legal driving age should not be raised to the minimum age of eighteen.
Sixteen is a traditional milestone in a teens life, why would one want to take that tradition away?
All the opportunities sixteen year olds receive driving would be ruined if the driving age is
changes to eighteen, which could also ruin a teens future. Driving is an American rite of passage
and the system for it is fine just the way it is. Let s keep the age sixteen sweet and leave the legal

The Interpretation of the A by Major Characters in The Scarlet Letter
People have different cultures and experiences throughout their lives; therefore, they all have
different perspectives of the same object. Various authors use different perspectives of people to
make objects mean different based on how people approach it. Not only the readers see the object
in different ways, but also the characters in the story. The Scarlet Letteruses various symbolism
such as A , rosebush, the forest and more which might mean different to each person. Nathaniel
Hawthorne, the author of The Scarlet Letter, uses the symbolism of A to indicate different meanings
throughout the story. However, some readers get confused what exactly A means... Show more

The quote foreshadows that she will be able to serve herself and Pearl after prison with her
needlework. Even though he gives positive diction such as able and elaborate to describe the
scarlet letter, Hawthorne still reminds the reader that A means adultery and that is Hester s major
appearance. In the Governor s house, Hawthorne depicts reflection of Hester and the scarlet letter
in the large and curved mirror as exaggerated and gigantic proportions , and adds more information
that the scarlet letter is most prominent feature of her appearance, bringing all the readers back to
reality that it does not mean that she is not a sinner because now A stood for Able to Hester
(Hawthorne 57). Throughout the story, Hawthorne uses A to characterize Hester explaining how
other people treat Hester and how she interpret the A as.
Hawthorne expresses Pearl, the daughter of Hester, as the scarlet letter and the scarlet letter as
Pearl. Pearl has an obsession to the scarlet letter. Pearl refuses to go to Hester in the forest when
Hester was not wearing A . Pearl thinks only when Hester is wearing A , Hester is her mother
and should Hester repudiate the letter, she will repudiate Pearl (Baym). The action of Pearl
refusing to go to Hester when Hester is not wearing the scarlet letter clearly shows Pearl has a
deep connection with the letter. Pearl was the result of Hester s

Don t Let Smoking Control Your Life In today s growing society, smoking is still a major problem
among many humans. A lot of teens and young adults are revealed to the effects of smoking
through the exposure of secondhand smoke. The presence of secondhand smoke can be
encountered through family members, friends, and even people in the surrounding area. Since
smoking is so accessible, anyone is able to obtain a cigarette. The result of smoking, however,
presents undesirable outcomes. As an example, cancer, lung disease, a change in lifestyle and
personality, or impacted decisions. Similarly, the advertisement campaign Stay In Control by The
Real Cost introduces us to Amanda Green a teenage girl who finally has the independence to
define who she is. However, before she can, Amanda gives up part of her freedom to smoking.
The losses of freedom to smoking includes everything from her life, her money, her boundaries, etc.
Through the use of vivid imagery, voiceover, and sad emotions, the ad Stay In Control effectively
conveys a message about the harmful effects of smoking to its intended audience: teens and young
adults. During the youth ages 12 17, the use of tobacco is consistently established and started.
Adolescents who are open to cigarettes attempt to try it and many who try a cigarette move to
addictive, regular use. Likewise, the powerful imagery presented in this ad gives the audience a
sense of relation

Ellipsis Of Subjects And Objects In Mandarin Chinese
Ellipsis of Subjects and Objects in Mandarin Chinese
Mandarin Chinese as one of the unique languages in the world has many significant features, and
one of them is ellipsis of subjects and objects. In English, a complete sentence consists of at least
three basic elements which are a subject, an object, and a verb. However, compare with English,
Mandarin Chinese does not have strict grammatical rules to form a complete sentence because
people can leave out subjects or objects when they talk to each other. Although there are many
sentences in Mandarin Chinese lack of subjects or objects, the sentences are still clear and
grammatically correct. Therefore, can we conclude that subjects and objects are not necessary for
spoken Mandarin Chinese? In other words, when can a speaker omit the subject or the object in
Mandarin Chinese?
Ellipsis of subjects also occurs in spoken English, but it normally in a set phrase. For example,
people often say see you tomorrow rather than I will see you tomorrow. Moreover, due to
grammatical requirement, not every sentence in English can omit the subject. Although sometimes
the sentence is still understandable without the subject, the meaning will become ambiguous.
Compare with English, ellipsis of subjects is more common in spoken Mandarin Chinese. Unlike
English, it does not have any grammatical restriction and can be used in any sentence. Therefore,
In order to have a better understanding of ellipsis of subjects and objects in Mandarin Chinese, I
use examples from video recording that I recorded in an apartment. There are two participants in
the video and both of them are native Chinese speaker. Two participants know each other very well,
and the conversation topic is about the Animation class that female speaker takes this quarter.
In the conversation, the female speaker omits subjects constantly, and the listener can still
understand what she wants to say and respond to her. For example, the female speaker says:
(1).ењЁдёЉйќўдёЂдёЄеЉІењ°и®І. zai shangmianyigrjingdejiang.
AttopcontinuouslyCtalk
(He) talks continuously at the stage.
This sentence is a typical incomplete sentence in spoken Mandarin Chinese. The speaker wants to
say that the Animation class lacks of the

For centuries, a liberal arts education was a sign of a well rounded, creative individual. However,
in an ever changing era, a liberal arts education is nothing more than an example of how little
people enjoy change. Nowadays, numerous jobs require basic to intermediate computer skills,
literacy in basic business and economic concepts, and a remedial understanding of geography, social

Natural sciences entail subjects such as biology, chemistry, and physics, whereas formal sciences
include mathematics. Although the subjects which teach computer skills, business skills, and
world awareness are offered at most universities, they are not required classes, even though they
are quickly becoming necessary skills in the world. The liberal arts standard curriculum needs to
be adjusted to overcome the gap which exists between what students are expected to know and
understand and what they are actually taught. The goal of a liberal arts education is to create a
well rounded, educated individual. Expanding and adjusting a liberal arts education to meet the
requirements of an ever changing society does in no way hinder this goal. In all actuality,
expanding a liberal arts education to require new subjects would simply create more well rounded
individuals. Furthermore, changing the liberal arts curriculum is nothing new. The original
curriculum developed by the Greeks only included grammar, rhetoric, and logic and was soon
expanded during the medieval times to include four new topics (Haidar). Changing the curriculum
becomes necessary when new skill sets are required in society. Since the last time the liberal arts
curriculum was adapted, technology has expanded and with it new skills are required of
employees. With the gap that exists between what skills are necessary and what is

Nick Carraway Mature In The Great Gatsby

displaying traits of one who has not matured yet. The Great Gatsby follows the story of a man
who is infatuated with a reckless woman and the drama that follows. Nick Carraway is our

Pathogen And Biological Agent That Causes Disease
There is no such thing as a perfect pathogen. Discuss
A pathogen can be defined as a microorganism or a biological agent that causes disease. Pathogen
s sole aim is to replicate and produce progeny to pass its genes on to; therefore the notion of a
perfect pathogen would be an organism that has the capacity to carry out this task. The major
classes of infectious agents are bacteria, virus, protozoa, fungi and even prions (Albert B, 2002) .
In order to be considered perfect a pathogen would have to possess many characteristic such as
being highly contagious, rapidly shed, evoking limited immunity, constantly evolving and only
moderately virulent, allowing most of the infect to recover, which means a larger pool of
susceptible host (J.Hall, 2012). The host immune system protects us from most infection. However
pathogens must overcome this in order to survive, and they have developed many adaptations to
achieve this.
The first ordeal that a pathogen must overcome biochemical and physical barriers that operates at
the body surface such as the skin in order to gain entry. The skin is normally impermeable to
majority of the pathogen and the mucosal layer also provides a barrier (Richard V Goering, 2008).
Virus and bacteria can break through the first line defence in many ways such as through openings
of the ears, mouth or nose. Wounds, abrasion are also sites of entry as they are an opening in the
barrier many virulent pathogens utilise this including streptococci, Leptospira

Child Beauty Pageants Should Be Banned
Imagine you are at home, watching tv. Flipping through the channels, you see a preview for next
week s episode of Toddlers Tiara s. They show the girls dressed in frilly, sparkly attire, fake teeth,
fake hair, fake tans, and makeup that could transform their faces into someone in their 20 s. These
children are usually misbehaving, disobedient, overdramatic and they are between the ages of four
and six. Any person could see that this lifestyle is incredibly harmful to these children not just
because of what it does to their appearance, but what happens when these little girls minds become
tainted with the thoughts of needing to be beautiful and talented in order for people to like them.
They also learn that being beautiful... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Buying whatever is needed to look perfect for beauty, not to mention getting private lessons in

the best of everything. In other words, they become high maintenance; always believing they
should look their best. With as much attention as they get, these pageant girls begin to believe
that the world revolves around them. It creates a selfish way of being, and having no concern

Pregnancy Discrimination Essay
Pregnancy Discrimination There are many issues to consider in pregnancy discrimination. The
well being of the child, the well being of the mother, employer/employee relations, as well as
gender issues. There are however several State and Federal laws that protect people against
pregnancydiscrimination. Two of the Federal laws are the Pregnancy Discrimination Act and the
Family and Medical Leave Act. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act was an amendment to title VII
of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, it is illegal for

Which aspect(s) do you value the most? (required, 350 words max)
Health, humanity, and human connection are a few of the values which I hold to the highest
regard. Health, because of its central importance to human happiness and well being. Humanity,
because of the uniting and healing powers of compassion and love. And human connection,
because of the sense of belonging, identity, and support that is provided through our meaningful
relationships with others. These values are particularly important to me due to their necessity in
not only the longevity of life, but in living a life of worth and quality. We learn from the
experiences and insights of others, and we learn together in our pursuit of new experiences
alongside those whom we befriend. These experiences and connections play an important role
towards small and largescale economic progress, personal and populational health improvements,
and the entwined facets of happiness and productivity. In a more role specific sense, these values
are of the utmost importance to me because I believe that the best care is given by a physician who
truly cares for and understands their patients, allowing them to improve their patient`s outlook on
and quality of life, as well as their health. The experiences that I have gained from overcoming

Tire Faults
When doing a pre trip inspection on his commercial or owner operator truck, the truck driver can
fall into a routine where he quickly glances at the usual areas on his tires that he habitually
checks while not noticing other areas. For example, some drivers only look at the tread while
failing to look closely at the sidewalls for signs of bulges or bubbles. This is a mistake because
this kind of tire damage is a blowout waiting to happen. In no uncertain terms, it is not safe to
drive with tire bulges or bubbles. Change the tire on the spot if you can, otherwise get it repaired at

Frederick Douglass was arguably the most prominent African American abolitionist during the mid

Frederick Douglass, an American Slave published in 1845. Frederick Douglass also produced an
African American newspaper, Frederick Douglass Paper, which highlighted the reception and

On 2 December 1853, Douglass himself wrote and published a letter to Harriet Beecher Stowe
concerning her added involvement in abolitionism in Frederick Douglass Paper. In this letter
Douglass directly, under his own name, praises Uncle Tom s Cabin as a useful tool in the fight
for abolitionism. He writes, I desire to express, dear Madam, my deep sense of the value of the
services which you have already rendered my afflicted and persecuted people, by the publication of
your inimitable book on the subject of slavery. That contribution to our bleeding cause, alone,
involves us in a debt of gratitude which cannot be measured . . . . (Douglass) . By writing this letter,
Douglass establishes the novel as both valuable and sympathetic to the plight of the enslaved

public.

The Shape Memory Effect And Super Elasticity
INTRODUCTION
The Shape Memory Alloys are quite fascinating materials characterised by a Shape Memory
effect and Super elasticity, which ordinary metals and alloys do not have. This unique behaviour
was first found in Au 47.5%Cd alloy in 1951, and was publicised by its discovery in a Ti Ni alloyin
1963. After much research and development thereafter, shape memory alloys are now being
practically used as new functional alloys for pipe couplings, antennae for cellular phones and
various actuators in electrical appliances, etc. Furthermore, they have attracted keen attention as
promising candidate for smart materials since they function as sensors as well as actuators.
The shape memory effect and super elasticity are based on the diffusion less transformation called
martensitic transformation. The Shape memory effect is a unique property of certain alloys
exhibiting martensitic transformations. Even though the alloy is deformed in low temperature
phase, it recovers its original shape by reverse transformation upon heating to a critical temperature
called reverse transformation temperature. Many other alloys such as In T1, 3, 4 Cu Zn and Cu Al
Ni were also found. The same alloys have another unique property called Super elasticity at a higher
temperature, which is associated with a large (18%) nonlinear recoverable strain upon loading and
unloading. Since these alloys have a unique property in remembering the original shape, having an
actuator function and having

Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing
An animal test is any scientific experiment or test in which a live animal is forced to undergo
something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm. As right now,
millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside barren
cages in laboratories across the country. They languish in pain, suffer from extreme frustration,
ache with loneliness, and long to be free. The complete lack of environmental enrichment and
stress of their living situation cause some animals to develop neurotic types of behavior such as
incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out their own fur, and even biting
themselves. They shake and cower in fear whenever someone approaches, and their blood pressure
spikes dramatically. After enduring a life of pain, loneliness, and terror, almost all of them will be
killed. There are many non animal test methods that can be used in place of test on animals. Not
only are these non animal test more humane, they also have potential to be cheaper, faster, and
more relevant to humans. Some of this methods are non invasive imaging techniques such as MRIs
and CT scans, computer models and simulations, and stem cell and genetic testing methods. Some
of the experimentations conducted on animals today is required by law, most of it is not. In fact, a
number of countries have implements bans on the testing of certain types of products on animals,
such as the cosmetics testing bans in

The Expedition Of Lewis And Clark
Without the expedition of Lewis and Clark, the American history that people know would be
completely different changing the accomplishments in history. The background and experience
Lewis and Clark already developed prior to the expedition would be very beneficial and help
make the journey easier. The development of the mission played a key part in the expedition
itself because if the development did not play out exactly how Jefferson planned, then the
expedition may not have been as successful. A big part of history, the expedition was very
significant and impacted American society in ways that no one will ever be able to understand.
Although the expedition of Lewis and Clark would be a very long journey, the United States
would not have developed into such a prosperous country without the two men who traveled
across the terrain in rain and snow in order to improve the United States. Meriwether Lewis was
born August 18, 1724 near Ivy Virginia where he would begin a journey that would change
history. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson asked Lewis to be his private secretary after he helped in the
Whiskey Rebellion, which was farmers who started an uprising against taxes in 1794. Lewis had a

Similar to what Dana Stevens is taking about in finding credibility in a television like 24, Jason
Zinser looks at this question in his article, The Good, the Bad, and The Daily Show. . Zinser
addresses both the benefits and downfalls of television, but ultimately ends up taking a stand
somewhere in the middle of how t.v. is both good and bad for people. Zinser s believes that The
Daily Show can be used as a starting point from which people can gain an understanding of
current events but it s not the most useful way. He claims that this type of information people
gain from watching a comedy news show can be both useful but damaging. The question that
needs to be addressed though, is why does it matter where people are gaining their knowledge
about the world and critical events as long as they are gaining some knowledge from what they re

properly. Although foreign and domestic issues aren t settled by popular vote, an informed public
wields great democratic power . It doesn t matter whether information comes from a comedy news

far better than receiving no information at all, because if the public is informed about the news in

Theme Of Deception In A Midsummer Night s Dream
Deception
Ritik Vanvani
There are many different themes in The Midsummer Night s Dream. The main theme or the most
important is deception. Deception occurs to many actors in the book. The top three groups that
deception has occurred to are, the first group Bottom, Titania, and Oberon. The second group is
Lysander and Hermia deceiving the kingdom. The last group is the Actors. Deception is the action
of deceiving someone.
Titania gets deceived by Oberon because he ordered Puck to put a love potion into Titania s
eyes.He did it because he wanted her attention and wanted the child for himself. I ll watch
Titania when she is asleep, And drop the liquor of it in her eyes (II,1,551 552). Titania was busy
with the child and never payed attention to Oberon. Give me that boy, and I will go with thee
(II,1,513). Oberon deceiving Titania wasn t the only deception, the second deception was the love
potion. The love potion made Bottom to appear handsome, but in reality Bottom had a face of an

everyone who didn t agree with their relationship. Lysander wants to run away and marry Hermia.
Quince, Snug, Bottom, Flute, Snout, and Starveling deceive themselves thinking they are
exceptional actors but in reality they are really bad at acting. This is an example of deception
because they are doing it to themselves. They think they are really good but in reality, they are

The Egyptian And Babylonian Mathematicians
Abstract Research compiled from video lectures and articles retrieved from the internet is the basis
for the findings in this article related to solving a cubic equation. The noteworthy mathematicians
and their contributions to the solution and their understanding of the cubic equation is included.
Also included is an example of a cubic equation solved using Descartes Factor Theorem.
Index Terms complex number, cubic equation, Descartes, Riehmen Sphere, Tartaglia
Introduction
Building on the successes of their ancient predecessors the mathematicians of the European
Renaissance searched for an algebraic solution to the cubic equation. The ancient Egyptian and
Babylonian mathematicians produced solutions for the linear and quadratic equations. By 628,
Brahmagupta, the Indian mathematician, developed the general quadratic formula for solving a
quadratic equation. In the eighth century, the great Persian mathematician, Al Kharizmi, offered a
solution to the quadratic equation by completing the square. But solving the cubic equation or
finding the zeroes of the polynomials of degree three evaded the great mathematicians. Omar
Khayyan, the Islamic poet, astronomer, and mathematician attempted to find a general algebraic
solution to the cubic equation but was able to only offer a geometric solution for a specific cubic
equation. During the Renaissance, Tartaglia, Cardano, Viete, Fermat, and Descartes, made
advances in solving the cubic equation. Later, Newton and Riemann would

Socrates s View On Plato s The And Aristophanes s The...
Elenchus, as a famous Socratic method for education, uses dialogue and questions to approach
philosophical truths. The method is presented in both Plato s the Euthyphro and Aristophanes s the
Clouds. However, Socrates s personal image and characteristics, as well as the nature of his
questioning differ a lot in these two works. While the Euthyphro presents a philosopher king
guiding the less wise people in discovery of truths, Socratesin the Clouds has little interest in either
exploring the ethical truth or helping others get out of Platos cave . Instead, he is portrayed as a
sophist who corrupts people with mysterious and useless knowledge, ignores traditional Athenian
education, and debilitates Athenian men. Compared to Plato s focus on Socrates s wisdom
reflected in the dialogue, the Clouds is a distorted interpretation of Socrates s elenchus. Rather than
justifiably criticizing Socrates, Aristophanes depicts him from a common Athenian s perspective. It
is this misunderstanding of the value of Socrates s teaching by Athenian citizens that constitutes the
failure of elenchus in both the Clouds and the Euthyphro.
Socrates s image in the two works differ firstly in his attitude towards knowledge and towards
himself. A typical statement of Socrates, both in the Euthyphro and in other Plato s works, is that
he has no clear knowledge. He is different from the public because he knows that he does not know.
Neither does he claim to teach or corrupt the young (Euthyphro, p.2

This in return turns out to be misleading to the investors, but since General Electric is also
sponsoring the Olympics this could cause one to question the true stance on their sponsorship. By
General Electric deviating from SEC rules, it s as if the International Olympic Committee were not
to follow the charter and to be going against their values of following good governance within their
organization.
Considering the above contradiction, a solution would be to get more involved in the governance
of General Electrics. A way to do this would be to have the International Olympic Committees
financial auditors evaluate and monitor General Electric s financial auditors and double check
their work. This would ensure that any wrong doing on General Electric s behalf be taken care of

A Very Brief Look at the New Testament
The New Testament is an anthology of twenty seven ancient writings that describe the life of Jesus
Christ and the beginning of the Christian Church. This anthology was not written by just one
person, but rather, has several authors, most of whom are known and some of whom are not
distinctly known. All of these writings are believed to have been written in the first and second
centuries AD from roughly 50AD to 125AD(class notes). The New Testament was mainly written
in Greek with some small bits of Aramaic (class notes), but has since been translated into various
other languages. This group of writings has been used as both a theological and historical
document, while there are no clear lines distinguishing the two. It becomes apparent in studying the
New Testament that it is a group of texts discussing JesusChrist as the Son of God, and the origin
and spread of Christianity while including a heavy influence of the societies of the authors.
The New Testament comes from at least eight different authors who lived during and after the life
of Jesus. Each of the writings, while dealing with Jesus, his teachings or the spread of Christianity,
has a historical undertone. There are clear bits of historical context throughout the anthology that
allow the books to be dated and provide insight to the world of the authors. When the prophetic
destruction of the temple in Jerusalem is being discussed in the gospels, it is clear that the authors

Effects of Daily Media Use on Youth Obesity
As according to a study done by the Kaiser Family Foundation, 8 18 year olds devote an average
of 7 hours and 38 minutes...to using entertainment media across a typical day . Not only that, but
most youths also report to having no rules governing the amount of time spent on entertainment
media in the mediums of TV, videogames, and any computer use. Less than 50% actually have
rules and regulations on what video games they are allowed to play and what TV shows they can
watch. However, I believe that daily media use among children and teens needs to be controlled. If
it is not, this could potentially lead to negative ramifications, such as carpal tunnel syndrome,
obesity, internet addiction, and negative effects on the brain.

Youths who are obese are also very likely to be obese in adulthood, with even higher risks of
severe health problems such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and several types of cancer,
including cancer of the kidney, gall bladder, esophagus, breasts, and colon, just to name a few.
In addition, Dr. Douglas Gentile, Director of the Media Research Lab at Iowa State University

school, family, and psychological functioning to merit serious concern. Some harmful symptoms
of internet addiction are: loses track of time while online , sacrifices needed hours of sleep to

of spending time with friends or family, disregards set time limits and sneaks online when no one
is around, becomes irritable, moody or depressed when not online , Spends time online in place of

Somnambulist By Alfie Kohn Analysis
Happiness is seen differently for many people; some rely on money, image, status and popularity for
their happiness. While others may choose to rely on personal growth, community feeling, and
personal relationships to obtain happiness. These are the differences between extrinsic and intrinsic
happiness. Extrinsic happinessrelies on materialistic needs while intrinsic happiness relies on
psychological needs, as shown in the movie Happy. How Not to Get Into College: The
Preoccupation with Preparation, by Alfie Kohn, and the poem Somnambulist, by Heron Jones,
suggests that students are taught to rely solely on extrinsic rewards and getting into college to
achieve happiness. Kohn and Jones imply that, by promoting extrinsic rewards, students... Show

The article How Not to Get into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation, by Alfie Kohn, shows
that the main focus for students are extrinsic rewards, in this case, a college acceptance. The article
states that colleges and universities only seem to be looking for winners rather than learners (Kohn,
25), which only continues to teach students to rely on extrinsic rewards. Students focus on
preparing for college by completing assignments that the very concept of [doing things] for pleasure
[is] unfamiliar to [them]... They [are] ignoring or perhaps, by now, even forgetting what they
[enjoy] doing. (Kohn, 6 7). In the process of trying to achieve these rewards, they focus on
successfully completing things like assignments and projects rather than doing things for their own
pleasure. The poem Somnambulist by Heron Jones also displays that educators are teaching
students to rely on rewards for happiness. Even schools paint the fantasy with the brush of
prosperity (Jones, 28), the metaphor the comparison between a teacher and a student, to show the
similarity and differences between the understanding that educators and students have of happiness.
Educators allow students to believe that extrinsic rewards are the most important thing in their lives
and is used as motivation to achieve the highest possible grades. Students are forced to achieve the
happiness that the educators want them to achieve, to benefit themselves and the education system.
Students rely heavily on getting into college thinking that it will benefit them in the future;
however the lifelong search for intrinsic happiness does not

The Religions Of The Middle East
Abrahamic religions, religions that derive from the biblical character Abraham, have three main
religions in the group. The first, and oldest, is Judaism, founded several thousand years ago in the
Middle East; then there is Christianity, the most popular religion in the world, which was founded
shortly after the death of Christ; finally, there is Islam, the second most popular religion in the
world, founded by the prophet Muhammed in the 7th century ACE. Islam has over one billion
followers of the Islamic faith. Although it is one of the most popular religions in the world, many
people do not know much about what Muslims, followers of Islam, believe in. Due to the rising
publicity of militant terrorist groups in the Middle East, Islamophobia has become rampant in many
first world countries. Although the media portrays violent and barbaric acts performed by militant
Muslims, a majority of Muslims do not commit such atrocities and are wrongly persecuted. Only by
educating those who do not know about Islam, can it be assured that Islamophobia will dwindle.
Islam was founded in Saudi Arabia by a prophet named Muhammed. Muhammed is considered to be
the greatest prophet in the Muslim faith, the second greatest prophet in the Muslim faith is
considered to be Jesus Christ himself. The one main, significant difference between Islam and
Christianity is that Muslims do not see Christ as being the Lord, they believe that only Allah, the
Arabic name for God, is the one, true lord.

The Crystal Clear Water Feels Refreshing To The Touch.
The crystal clear water feels refreshing to the touch. As you look around and see the life that is
surrounded by this natural place of beauty. Though it may look like a haven for all who dwell
there, like anything it has a dark side. The ocean can be a cruel and unforgiving force that should
not be reckoned with. Filled with what scientists believe to be millions of aquatic species. Sea
Algae is one of those species that is a plant and not that cool. Cool animals are whales, dolphins,
sharks, and fish. They are all amazing and are the kings of the oceans. The ocean covers about
75% of the Earth s surfaces. The climate of the ocean depends on where you are i the world. In the

This is why it is so vital to the survival of the ocean population. Like nitrogen, Carbon is absorbed
and dissolved into the surface of the ocean. Tiny marine plants called phytoplankton use
photosynthesis to turn much of the carbon dissolved into the ocean into organic matter. Some
organisms use it to make the material used for shells and skeletons, calcium carbonate. By using up
carbon through chemical and biological processes, there is more allowance for carbon dioxide to
enter the water from the atmosphere. The nickname carbon sink has been given to the ocean
because it absorbs more carbon than it lets out.
The relationship between humans and the ocean could once be categorized as commensalism,
where the human was helped, and the ocean was neither helped nor harmed. Now, it has some of
the same characteristics of parasitism. Humans continue to fish, sail, and explore in the ocean.
One of the largest impacts humans have on the ocean is pollution. Beaches across the world are
littered with trash and toxic materials, in and out of the water. Since every ocean connects, a
piece of trash could start in Cuba, and end up somewhere on the coast of Madagascar. To try and
reverse the damage done, there are clean up attempts all around the world to try and make the
ocean what it once was. Trash left over isn t the only problem going on. Every once in awhile,
there will be a large boat, transferring oil from one continent to another. The BP oil spill in

Analysis Of The Book Theories Of International Politics...
Cameron Lurcook
Dr. Michael Allen
Political Science 306

Drezner Reaction Analysis In Daniel W. Drezner s book, Theories of International Politics and
Zombies, Drezner explores the theoretical impact a zombie apocalypse would have on international
relations. In his exploration of ideas, Drezner analyzes the approaches of different types of feminism
disciplines to a zombie apocalypse. The two feminist ideas he explores are liberal feminism and
post structuralist feminism. Drezner however, ignores the idea of a radical feminist approach in a
critical time such as a zombie apocalypse. As an important discipline and idea around feminism,
Drezner s lack of acknowledgement of this idea proves to be hurtful to his argument of the
reaction of feminists as a whole to a potential zombie apocalypse. I will apply radical feminism to a
zombie apocalypse to better understand Drezner s focus on feminism, and contrast these ideas with
those explored in the book. I am to explore the differences between radical feminism and the two
feminist theories Drezner focuses on, liberalism and post structuralism.
Daniel Drezner explains the ideas that many feminist s share: the world is vastly different for
women than it is for men. The gap between the genders is to the detriment of women. Radical
feminist would concur with this point. Radical feminism centers on the idea that the suppression of
the female gender is the main focus of all oppression within the world (Rowland and

  • 4. Social And Developmental Perspectives Of Psychology Phinney Ong s (2007) article discusses both the social and developmental perspectives of psychology in relation to the various components and measurements that are commonly used to identify ethnic identity within groups. To aid in their discussion, the researchers start by analyzing the available studies whose research effectually laid the groundwork for the development of both theoretical models and applicable assessments concerning individual and group ethnic identification, such as the Multigroup Ethnic IdentityMeasure (MEIM) and the Multigroup Ethnic Identity Measure Revised (MEIM R). The purpose of this research was for the researchers to be able to draw their own conclusions regarding modern theories of ethnic identity so that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 277). However, Phinney Ong (2007) takes the concept of social identity one step further by suggesting that a person s ethnic identity is also a form of social identity that develops alongside the formation of both the ingroup and outgroup mentality. Therefore, individuals who feel strongly connected to their ethnic group are more likely to identify with and/or behave according to the social norms and expectations of that group. For example, in studying the differences between the multicultural theory and the social identity theory, researchers Negy, Shreve, Jensen, Uden (2003) discovered a strong correlation between individual levels of ethnic identity and levels of ethnocentrism in both European Americans and Latino/a Americans. However, there was little to no correlation found among those who identify themselves as African American. Nevertheless, Phinney Ong (2007) conclude that ethnic identity is multifaceted and research designs and methods should reflect the multidimensional nature of ethnic identity accordingly. In addition to evaluating ethnic identity from a variety of psychological or behavioral perspectives, the article also discusses a number theoretical models for defining ethnic identity. As Phinney Ong (2007) state, a clear theoretical model, therefore, is a necessary foundation for all ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. The Theory Of The Drive Theory Drive Theory The Drive theory was so named by Freud because of its emphasis on libidinal and aggressive drives, which Freud considers to be the two principal motivating forces of human behavior, and which barks for attention and expression. A child at birth is in a state of primary narcissism, and it clamors to have its needs met irrespective of the comforts of others. The erogenous zones (mouth, anus and genitals) are the avenues through which the energies are directed, and by stimulating these areas, the child finds pleasure. If energies are not adequately released, anxiety results, but as the child develops, it learns to regulate such forces for its ultimate good and that of others. Freud believes that three components of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If human beings functioned solely from the Id s control center, there would be absolute chaos, since people will do whatever they wish, whenever they wish, and wherever they wish, irrespective of consequences. The Ego lives in both the conscious and the unconscious mind, and it represent the I of the individual. The Ego functions like a good citizen, and acts as an intermediary between the Id, the superego, and the external environment, to procure socially acceptable behavior. The ego coordinates volition, and its main business is to protect self. It also regulates and suppresses the inordinate promptings of the Id through reasoning and compromises, and is capable of delaying gratification for the future. As maturation ensues, the ego expands, while the id shrinks, except in special cases where the individual is fixated at the infantile level. Conditioned on the examination that people with strong egos often have weak ids and superegos, Freud concludes that the relative distribution of energy among these forces affects personality directly. Top of Form Bottom of Form The superego is the conscience that grows out of parental prohibitions, and it represents the moral component of the personality. Through the diminution of early narcissism, when the child begins to acknowledge its limits, the superego imposes itself as a kind of watchdog over the ego, making sure that the ... • 7. Arrogance Of Greek Heroes In Odyssey, Aeneid, And Arrogance of Greek Heroes Often readers will criticize the champions of classical and medieval epics for egotism. Critics cite examples from the Odyssey, the Aeneid, and Beowulf of conceit and egocentric behavior. Odysseus, Aeneas, and Beowulf display a well known arrogance befitting their accomplishments. The motivation for this arrogance, to complete these tasks, to perform these feats, is often over generalized to the point of inaccuracy and confusion. One must not let such misinterpretations interrupt the humanization of these characters. Through the examination of the desires and behavior of these epic heroes, we can discover an underlying need for recognition or honor. In classical and medieval western epics, the hero s ... • 8. Minimum Driving Age Should Not Be Raised To 18 Essay The big one six is an age kids look forward to their whole lives. A new found freedom teens gain when turning sixteen is driving. Driving is a privilege and an incentive for teens, and driving opens up a world of opportunities to young adults. Some people think teens are too immature to drive and should wait until adulthood, however the minimum drivingage should not be raised from sixteen to eighteen. Sixteen should be the age to drive because parents cannot run teens everywhere, eighteen is a very busy age, and not all teens are immature. Moms and dads have a very busy schedule. When teens reach the legal driving age a little of the stress parents have on their shoulders is lifted off. Teens can drive to and from school, practice, extracurricular... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The false assumptions people have about teens is unfair to the teens who are actually responsible. I as a teen understand how dangerous driving is and how I am responsible for my passengers lives while at the wheel. Why should the driving privilege given to teens at sixteen be changed because of a few bad kids? People need not to have a bad outlook on teens just because some teens are infact immature, but some adults are not very mature either. Teens just need to not be stereotypes then teenagers would not have any excuse to act up if people expected more out of them. Sixteen year olds are perfectly capable of driving, and the new found responsibility could even make teens act more mature. Busy parents, a busy young adult life, and mature teens are why the legal driving age should not be raised to the minimum age of eighteen. Sixteen is a traditional milestone in a teens life, why would one want to take that tradition away? All the opportunities sixteen year olds receive driving would be ruined if the driving age is changes to eighteen, which could also ruin a teens future. Driving is an American rite of passage and the system for it is fine just the way it is. Let s keep the age sixteen sweet and leave the legal driving age ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not only the readers see the object in different ways, but also the characters in the story. The Scarlet Letteruses various symbolism such as A , rosebush, the forest and more which might mean different to each person. Nathaniel Hawthorne, the author of The Scarlet Letter, uses the symbolism of A to indicate different meanings throughout the story. However, some readers get confused what exactly A means... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The quote foreshadows that she will be able to serve herself and Pearl after prison with her needlework. Even though he gives positive diction such as able and elaborate to describe the scarlet letter, Hawthorne still reminds the reader that A means adultery and that is Hester s major appearance. In the Governor s house, Hawthorne depicts reflection of Hester and the scarlet letter in the large and curved mirror as exaggerated and gigantic proportions , and adds more information that the scarlet letter is most prominent feature of her appearance, bringing all the readers back to reality that it does not mean that she is not a sinner because now A stood for Able to Hester (Hawthorne 57). Throughout the story, Hawthorne uses A to characterize Hester explaining how other people treat Hester and how she interpret the A as. Hawthorne expresses Pearl, the daughter of Hester, as the scarlet letter and the scarlet letter as Pearl. Pearl has an obsession to the scarlet letter. Pearl refuses to go to Hester in the forest when Hester was not wearing A . Pearl thinks only when Hester is wearing A , Hester is her mother and should Hester repudiate the letter, she will repudiate Pearl (Baym). • 10. Persuasive Essay On Stay In Control Kate Wang Professor Lang Eng 101 25 September 2017 Don t Let Smoking Control Your Life In today s growing society, smoking is still a major problem among many humans. A lot of teens and young adults are revealed to the effects of smoking through the exposure of secondhand smoke. The presence of secondhand smoke can be encountered through family members, friends, and even people in the surrounding area. Since smoking is so accessible, anyone is able to obtain a cigarette. The result of smoking, however, presents undesirable outcomes. As an example, cancer, lung disease, a change in lifestyle and personality, or impacted decisions. Similarly, the advertisement campaign Stay In Control by The Real Cost introduces us to Amanda Green a teenage girl who finally has the independence to define who she is. However, before she can, Amanda gives up part of her freedom to smoking. The losses of freedom to smoking includes everything from her life, her money, her boundaries, etc. Through the use of vivid imagery, voiceover, and sad emotions, the ad Stay In Control effectively conveys a message about the harmful effects of smoking to its intended audience: teens and young adults. During the youth ages 12 17, the use of tobacco is consistently established and started. Adolescents who are open to cigarettes attempt to try it and many who try a cigarette move to addictive, regular use. • 11. Ellipsis Of Subjects And Objects In Mandarin Chinese Ellipsis of Subjects and Objects in Mandarin Chinese Mandarin Chinese as one of the unique languages in the world has many significant features, and one of them is ellipsis of subjects and objects. In English, a complete sentence consists of at least three basic elements which are a subject, an object, and a verb. However, compare with English, Mandarin Chinese does not have strict grammatical rules to form a complete sentence because people can leave out subjects or objects when they talk to each other. Although there are many sentences in Mandarin Chinese lack of subjects or objects, the sentences are still clear and grammatically correct. Therefore, can we conclude that subjects and objects are not necessary for spoken Mandarin Chinese? In other words, when can a speaker omit the subject or the object in Mandarin Chinese? Ellipsis of subjects also occurs in spoken English, but it normally in a set phrase. For example, people often say see you tomorrow rather than I will see you tomorrow. Moreover, due to grammatical requirement, not every sentence in English can omit the subject. Although sometimes the sentence is still understandable without the subject, the meaning will become ambiguous. Compare with English, ellipsis of subjects is more common in spoken Mandarin Chinese. Unlike English, it does not have any grammatical restriction and can be used in any sentence. Therefore, In order to have a better understanding of ellipsis of subjects and objects in Mandarin Chinese, I use examples from video recording that I recorded in an apartment. There are two participants in the video and both of them are native Chinese speaker. Two participants know each other very well, and the conversation topic is about the Animation class that female speaker takes this quarter. In the conversation, the female speaker omits subjects constantly, and the listener can still understand what she wants to say and respond to her. For example, the female speaker says: (1).ењЁдёЉйќўдёЂдёЄеЉІењ°и®І. zai shangmianyigrjingdejiang. AttopcontinuouslyCtalk (He) talks continuously at the stage. However, in an ever changing era, a liberal arts education is nothing more than an example of how little people enjoy change. Nowadays, numerous jobs require basic to intermediate computer skills, literacy in basic business and economic concepts, and a remedial understanding of geography, social customs, and current events. The core curriculum of a liberal artseducation, which includes history, math, art, science, English, literature, and a variety of social sciences, needs to be expanded to encompass the subjects people encounter every day in the 21st century. Natural sciences entail subjects such as biology, chemistry, and physics, whereas formal sciences include mathematics. Although the subjects which teach computer skills, business skills, and world awareness are offered at most universities, they are not required classes, even though they are quickly becoming necessary skills in the world. The liberal arts standard curriculum needs to be adjusted to overcome the gap which exists between what students are expected to know and understand and what they are actually taught. The goal of a liberal arts education is to create a well rounded, educated individual. Expanding and adjusting a liberal arts education to meet the requirements of an ever changing society does in no way hinder this goal. In all actuality, expanding a liberal arts education to require new subjects would simply create more well rounded individuals. Furthermore, changing the liberal arts curriculum is nothing new. The original curriculum developed by the Greeks only included grammar, rhetoric, and logic and was soon expanded during the medieval times to include four new topics (Haidar). Changing the curriculum becomes necessary when new skill sets are required in society. Since the last time the liberal arts curriculum was adapted, technology has expanded and with it new skills are required of employees. • 20. Pathogen And Biological Agent That Causes Disease There is no such thing as a perfect pathogen. Discuss A pathogen can be defined as a microorganism or a biological agent that causes disease. Pathogen s sole aim is to replicate and produce progeny to pass its genes on to; therefore the notion of a perfect pathogen would be an organism that has the capacity to carry out this task. The major classes of infectious agents are bacteria, virus, protozoa, fungi and even prions (Albert B, 2002) . In order to be considered perfect a pathogen would have to possess many characteristic such as being highly contagious, rapidly shed, evoking limited immunity, constantly evolving and only moderately virulent, allowing most of the infect to recover, which means a larger pool of susceptible host (J.Hall, 2012). The host immune system protects us from most infection. However pathogens must overcome this in order to survive, and they have developed many adaptations to achieve this. The first ordeal that a pathogen must overcome biochemical and physical barriers that operates at the body surface such as the skin in order to gain entry. The skin is normally impermeable to majority of the pathogen and the mucosal layer also provides a barrier (Richard V Goering, 2008). Virus and bacteria can break through the first line defence in many ways such as through openings of the ears, mouth or nose. Wounds, abrasion are also sites of entry as they are an opening in the barrier many virulent pathogens utilise this including streptococci, Leptospira ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. The Shape Memory Effect And Super Elasticity INTRODUCTION The Shape Memory Alloys are quite fascinating materials characterised by a Shape Memory effect and Super elasticity, which ordinary metals and alloys do not have. This unique behaviour was first found in Au 47.5%Cd alloy in 1951, and was publicised by its discovery in a Ti Ni alloyin 1963. After much research and development thereafter, shape memory alloys are now being practically used as new functional alloys for pipe couplings, antennae for cellular phones and various actuators in electrical appliances, etc. Furthermore, they have attracted keen attention as promising candidate for smart materials since they function as sensors as well as actuators. The shape memory effect and super elasticity are based on the diffusion less transformation called martensitic transformation. The Shape memory effect is a unique property of certain alloys exhibiting martensitic transformations. Even though the alloy is deformed in low temperature phase, it recovers its original shape by reverse transformation upon heating to a critical temperature called reverse transformation temperature. Many other alloys such as In T1, 3, 4 Cu Zn and Cu Al Ni were also found. Pros And Cons Of Animal Testing An animal test is any scientific experiment or test in which a live animal is forced to undergo something that is likely to cause them pain, suffering, distress or lasting harm. As right now, millions of mice, rats, rabbits, primates, cats, dogs, and other animals are locked inside barren cages in laboratories across the country. They languish in pain, suffer from extreme frustration, ache with loneliness, and long to be free. The complete lack of environmental enrichment and stress of their living situation cause some animals to develop neurotic types of behavior such as incessantly spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out their own fur, and even biting themselves. They shake and cower in fear whenever someone approaches, and their blood pressure spikes dramatically. After enduring a life of pain, loneliness, and terror, almost all of them will be killed. There are many non animal test methods that can be used in place of test on animals. Not only are these non animal test more humane, they also have potential to be cheaper, faster, and more relevant to humans. Some of this methods are non invasive imaging techniques such as MRIs and CT scans, computer models and simulations, and stem cell and genetic testing methods. The method is presented in both Plato s the Euthyphro and Aristophanes s the Clouds. However, Socrates s personal image and characteristics, as well as the nature of his questioning differ a lot in these two works. While the Euthyphro presents a philosopher king guiding the less wise people in discovery of truths, Socratesin the Clouds has little interest in either exploring the ethical truth or helping others get out of Platos cave . Instead, he is portrayed as a sophist who corrupts people with mysterious and useless knowledge, ignores traditional Athenian education, and debilitates Athenian men. Compared to Plato s focus on Socrates s wisdom reflected in the dialogue, the Clouds is a distorted interpretation of Socrates s elenchus. Rather than justifiably criticizing Socrates, Aristophanes depicts him from a common Athenian s perspective. It is this misunderstanding of the value of Socrates s teaching by Athenian citizens that constitutes the failure of elenchus in both the Clouds and the Euthyphro. Socrates s image in the two works differ firstly in his attitude towards knowledge and towards himself. A typical statement of Socrates, both in the Euthyphro and in other Plato s works, is that he has no clear knowledge. He is different from the public because he knows that he does not know. Neither does he claim to teach or corrupt the young (Euthyphro, p.2 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Principles Of The International Olympic Committee Within every business or organization, there must be a set of values and goals that are established to prove consistency throughout their existence. These values and principles are there for them to follow and to lay groundwork as to how they should handle everything that encompasses their organization. In the same way, the International Olympic Committeewas set to provide a charter to highlight their mission and their principles. While it has become clear that Olympism aims to promote a joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles (IOC, 2015, p.13), it has also become evident that they must partner with sponsors to avoid debt like in the example of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This in return turns out to be misleading to the investors, but since General Electric is also sponsoring the Olympics this could cause one to question the true stance on their sponsorship. By General Electric deviating from SEC rules, it s as if the International Olympic Committee were not to follow the charter and to be going against their values of following good governance within their organization. Considering the above contradiction, a solution would be to get more involved in the governance of General Electrics. A way to do this would be to have the International Olympic Committees financial auditors evaluate and monitor General Electric s financial auditors and double check their work. This would ensure that any wrong doing on General Electric s behalf be taken care of immediately and with advice from the International Olympic Committee on making the right decision that will go along with their values. Through this solution, the Olympics don t risk losing a highly ranked company as a sponsor, but can also aid in reducing irrevocable mistakes. Furthermore, two other sponsors, Samsung and Panasonic have undergone scandals that contradict the Olympics values. In November of 2016, Samsung and Panasonic were under investigation for abusing labor rights. In their supply chains in Malaysia, workers seemed to be deceived regarding pay and worked long hours with an inadequate amount of rest (Pattison, 2016). As sponsors of the ... • 41. A Very Brief Look at the New Testament The New Testament is an anthology of twenty seven ancient writings that describe the life of Jesus Christ and the beginning of the Christian Church. This anthology was not written by just one person, but rather, has several authors, most of whom are known and some of whom are not distinctly known. All of these writings are believed to have been written in the first and second centuries AD from roughly 50AD to 125AD(class notes). The New Testament was mainly written in Greek with some small bits of Aramaic (class notes), but has since been translated into various other languages. This group of writings has been used as both a theological and historical document, while there are no clear lines distinguishing the two. It becomes apparent in studying the New Testament that it is a group of texts discussing JesusChrist as the Son of God, and the origin and spread of Christianity while including a heavy influence of the societies of the authors. The New Testament comes from at least eight different authors who lived during and after the life of Jesus. Each of the writings, while dealing with Jesus, his teachings or the spread of Christianity, has a historical undertone. There are clear bits of historical context throughout the anthology that allow the books to be dated and provide insight to the world of the authors. When the prophetic destruction of the temple in Jerusalem is being discussed in the gospels, it is clear that the authors are discussing the threat of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Somnambulist By Alfie Kohn Analysis Happiness is seen differently for many people; some rely on money, image, status and popularity for their happiness. While others may choose to rely on personal growth, community feeling, and personal relationships to obtain happiness. These are the differences between extrinsic and intrinsic happiness. Extrinsic happinessrelies on materialistic needs while intrinsic happiness relies on psychological needs, as shown in the movie Happy. How Not to Get Into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation, by Alfie Kohn, and the poem Somnambulist, by Heron Jones, suggests that students are taught to rely solely on extrinsic rewards and getting into college to achieve happiness. The article How Not to Get into College: The Preoccupation with Preparation, by Alfie Kohn, shows that the main focus for students are extrinsic rewards, in this case, a college acceptance. The article states that colleges and universities only seem to be looking for winners rather than learners (Kohn, 25), which only continues to teach students to rely on extrinsic rewards. Students focus on preparing for college by completing assignments that the very concept of [doing things] for pleasure [is] unfamiliar to [them]... They [are] ignoring or perhaps, by now, even forgetting what they [enjoy] doing. (Kohn, 6 7). In the process of trying to achieve these rewards, they focus on successfully completing things like assignments and projects rather than doing things for their own pleasure. The poem Somnambulist by Heron Jones also displays that educators are teaching students to rely on rewards for happiness. Even schools paint the fantasy with the brush of prosperity (Jones, 28), the metaphor the comparison between a teacher and a student, to show the similarity and differences between the understanding that educators and students have of happiness. Educators allow students to believe that extrinsic rewards are the most important thing in their lives and is used as motivation to achieve the highest possible grades. Students are forced to achieve the happiness that the educators want them to achieve, to benefit themselves and the education system. Students rely heavily on getting into college thinking that it will benefit them in the future; however the lifelong search for intrinsic happiness does not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Religions Of The Middle East Abrahamic religions, religions that derive from the biblical character Abraham, have three main religions in the group. The first, and oldest, is Judaism, founded several thousand years ago in the Middle East; then there is Christianity, the most popular religion in the world, which was founded shortly after the death of Christ; finally, there is Islam, the second most popular religion in the world, founded by the prophet Muhammed in the 7th century ACE. Islam has over one billion followers of the Islamic faith. Although it is one of the most popular religions in the world, many people do not know much about what Muslims, followers of Islam, believe in. Due to the rising publicity of militant terrorist groups in the Middle East, Islamophobia has become rampant in many first world countries. Although the media portrays violent and barbaric acts performed by militant Muslims, a majority of Muslims do not commit such atrocities and are wrongly persecuted. Only by educating those who do not know about Islam, can it be assured that Islamophobia will dwindle. Islam was founded in Saudi Arabia by a prophet named Muhammed. Muhammed is considered to be the greatest prophet in the Muslim faith, the second greatest prophet in the Muslim faith is considered to be Jesus Christ himself. The one main, significant difference between Islam and Christianity is that Muslims do not see Christ as being the Lord, they believe that only Allah, the Arabic name for God, is the one, true lord. ... Tiny marine plants called phytoplankton use photosynthesis to turn much of the carbon dissolved into the ocean into organic matter. Some organisms use it to make the material used for shells and skeletons, calcium carbonate. By using up carbon through chemical and biological processes, there is more allowance for carbon dioxide to enter the water from the atmosphere. The nickname carbon sink has been given to the ocean because it absorbs more carbon than it lets out. • 48. Analysis Of The Book Theories Of International Politics... Cameron Lurcook Dr. Michael Allen Political Science 306 September 21, 2015 Drezner Reaction Analysis In Daniel W. Drezner s book, Theories of International Politics and Zombies, Drezner explores the theoretical impact a zombie apocalypse would have on international relations. In his exploration of ideas, Drezner analyzes the approaches of different types of feminism disciplines to a zombie apocalypse. The two feminist ideas he explores are liberal feminism and post structuralist feminism. Drezner however, ignores the idea of a radical feminist approach in a critical time such as a zombie apocalypse. As an important discipline and idea around feminism, Drezner s lack of acknowledgement of this idea proves to be hurtful to his argument of the reaction of feminists as a whole to a potential zombie apocalypse. I will apply radical feminism to a zombie apocalypse to better understand Drezner s focus on feminism, and contrast these ideas with those explored in the book. I am to explore the differences between radical feminism and the two feminist theories Drezner focuses on, liberalism and post structuralism. Daniel Drezner explains the ideas that many feminist s share: the world is vastly different for women than it is for men. The gap between the genders is to the detriment of women. Radical feminist would concur with this point. Radical feminism centers on the idea that the suppression of the female gender is the main focus of all oppression within the world (Rowland and ...
