Data compression which can be lossy or lossless is required to decrease the storage requirement and better data transfer rate. One of the best image compression techniques is using wavelet transform. It is comparatively new and has many advantages over others. Wavelet transform uses a large variety of wavelets for decomposition of images. The state of the art coding techniques like HAAR, SPIHT (set partitioning in hierarchical trees) and use the wavelet transform as basic and common step for their own further technical advantages. The wavelet transform results therefore have the importance which is dependent on the type of wavelet used .In our thesis we have used different wavelets to perform the transform of a test image and the results have been discussed and analyzed. Haar, Sphit wavelets have been applied to an image and results have been compared in the form of qualitative and quantitative analysis in terms of PSNR values and compression ratios. Elapsed times for compression of image for different wavelets have also been computed to get the fast image compression method. The analysis has been carried out in terms of PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) obtained and time taken for decomposition and reconstruction.

Compression can be defined as an art form that involves the representation of information in a reduced form when compared to the original information. Image compression is extremely important in this day and age because of the increased demand for sharing and storing multimedia data. Compression is concerned with removing redundant or superfluous information from a file to reduce the size of the file. The reduction of the file size saves both memory and the time required to transmit and store data. A spatial image compression algorithm based on run length encodingjournalBEEI
Image compression is vital for many areas such as communication and storage of data that is rapidly growing nowadays. In this paper, a spatial lossy compression algorithm for gray scale images is presented. It exploits the inter-pixel and the psycho-visual data redundancies in images. The proposed technique finds paths of connected pixels that fluctuate in value within some small threshold. The path is calculated by looking at the 4-neighbors of a pixel then choosing the best one based on two conditions; the first is that the selected pixel must not be included in another path and the second is that the difference between the first pixel in the path and the selected pixel is within the specified threshold value. A path starts with a given pixel and consists of the locations of the subsequently selected pixels. Run-length encoding scheme is applied on paths to harvest the inter-pixel redundancy. After applying the proposed algorithm on several test images, a promising quality vs. compression ratio results have been achieved.
This document compares the performance of three lossless image compression techniques: Run Length Encoding (RLE), Delta encoding, and Huffman encoding. It tests these algorithms on binary, grayscale, and RGB images to evaluate compression ratio, storage savings percentage, and compression time. The results found that Delta encoding achieved the highest compression ratio and storage savings, while Huffman encoding had the fastest compression time. In general, the document evaluates and compares the performance of different lossless image compression algorithms.

Color image compression based on spatial and magnitude signal decomposition IJECEIAES
In this paper, a simple color image compression system has been proposed using image signal decomposition. Where, the RGB image color band is converted to the less correlated YUV color model and the pixel value (magnitude) in each band is decomposed into 2-values; most and least significant. According to the importance of the most significant value (MSV) that influenced by any simply modification happened, an adaptive lossless image compression system is proposed using bit plane (BP) slicing, delta pulse code modulation (Delta PCM), adaptive quadtree (QT) partitioning followed by an adaptive shift encoder. On the other hand, a lossy compression system is introduced to handle the least significant value (LSV), it is based on an adaptive, error bounded coding system, and it uses the DCT compression scheme. The performance of the developed compression system was analyzed and compared with those attained from the universal standard JPEG, and the results of applying the proposed system indicated its performance is comparable or better than that of the JPEG standards.

The Block Transform Coded, JPEG- a lossy image compression format has been used to keep storage and
bandwidth requirements of digital image at practical levels. However, JPEG compression schemes may
exhibit unwanted image artifacts to appear - such as the ‘blocky’ artifact found in smooth/monotone areas
of an image, caused by the coarse quantization of DCT coefficients. A number of image filtering
approaches have been analyzed in literature incorporating value-averaging filters in order to smooth out
the discontinuities that appear across DCT block boundaries. Although some of these approaches are able
to decrease the severity of these unwanted artifacts to some extent, other approaches have certain
limitations that cause excessive blurring to high-contrast edges in the image. The image deblocking
algorithm presented in this paper aims to filter the blocked boundaries. This is accomplished by employing
smoothening, detection of blocked edges and then filtering the difference between the pixels containing the
blocked edge. The deblocking algorithm presented has been successful in reducing blocky artifacts in an
image and therefore increases the subjective as well as objective quality of the reconstructed image.

The proposed Adaptive JPEG 2000 technique involves pre-processing images with a transfer function to make them more suitable for compression by JPEG 2000. This is intended to provide higher compression ratios than the original JPEG 2000 standard while keeping root mean square error within allowed thresholds. This document discusses compression of compound images using wavelet transform. It begins by introducing compound images, which contain different data types like text and graphics. Transmitting high resolution compound images over networks poses challenges due to large file sizes. The document then discusses using wavelet sub-band coding for lossless compression of compound images, which allows for excellent quality of text in compressed images. It provides details on image segmentation techniques like block-based segmentation that classify image blocks to compress according to image type.
An image in its original form contains large amount of redundant data which consumes huge
amount of memory and can also create storage and transmission problem. The rapid growth in the field of
multimedia and digital images also needs more storage and more bandwidth while data transmission. By
reducing redundant bits within the image data the size of image can also be reduced without affecting
essential data. In this paper we are representing existing lossless image compression techniques. The
image quality will also be discussed on the basis of certain performance parameters such as compression
ratio, peak signal to noise ratio, root mean square.
MULTI WAVELET BASED IMAGE COMPRESSION FOR TELE MEDICAL APPLICATIONprj_publication
Analysis and compression of medical image is an important area of biomedical
engineering. Analysis of medical image and data compression are rapidly evolving field with
growing applications in the teleradiology, Bio-medical, tele-medicine and medical data
analysis. Wavelet based techniques are latest development in the field of medical image
compression. The ROI must be compressed by a Lossless or a near lossless compression
algorithm. Wavelet based techniques are most recent growth in the area of medical image
compression.
Wavelet multi-resolution decomposition of images has shown its efficiency in many
image processing areas and specifically in compression. Transformed coefficients are
obtained by expanding a signal on a wavelet basis. The transformed signal is a different
representation of the same underlying data. Such representation is efficient if a relevant part
of the original information is found in a relative small number of coefficients. In this sense,
wavelets are near optimal bases for a wide class of signals with some smoothness, which is
the reason for compression.

ABSTRACT : In current days, Digital Imaging and Communication in Medicine (DICOM) is widely used for
viewing medical images from different modalities, distribution and storage. Image processing can be processed
by photographic, optical and electronic means, because digital methods are precise, fast and flexible, image
processing using digital computers are the most common method. Image Processing can extract information,
modify pictures to improves and change their structure (image editing, composition and image compression
etc.). Image compression is the major entities of storage system and communication which is capable of
crippling disadvantages of data transmission and image storage and also capable of reducing the data
redundancy. Medical images are require to stored for future reference of the patients and their hospital findings
hence, the medical image need to undergo the process of compression before storing it. Medical images are
much important in the field of medicine, all these Medical image compression is necessary for huge database
storage in Medical Centre and medical data transfer for the purpose of diagnosis. Presently Discrete cosine
transforms (DCT), Run Length Encoding Lossless compression technique, Wavelet transforms (DWT), are the
most usefully and wider accepted approach for the purpose of compression. On basis of based on discrete
wavelet transform we present a new DICOM based lossless image compression method. In the proposed
method, each DICOM image stored in the data set is compressed on the basis of vertically, horizontally and
diagonally compression. We analyze the results from our study of all the DICOM images in the data set using
two quality measures namely PSNR and RMSE. The performance and comparison was made over each images
stored in the set of data set of DICOM images. This work is presenting the performance comparison between
input images (without compression) and after compression results for each images in the data set using DWT
method. Further the performance of DWT method with HAAR process is compared with 2D-DWT method using
the quality metrics of PSNR & RMSE. The performance of these methods for image compression has been

Digital Image Compression using Hybrid Scheme using DWT and Quantization wit...IRJET Journal
This document discusses a hybrid image compression technique using both discrete cosine transform (DCT) and discrete wavelet transform (DWT). It begins with an introduction to image compression and its goals of reducing file size while maintaining quality. Next, it outlines the proposed hybrid compression method, which applies DWT to blocks of the image, then DCT to the approximation coefficients from DWT. This is intended to achieve higher compression ratios than DCT or DWT alone, with fewer blocking artifacts and false contours. Simulation results on various test images show the hybrid method provides higher PSNR and lower MSE than the individual transforms, demonstrating it outperforms them in terms of both quality and compression. This document discusses and compares different image compression techniques. It proposes a hybrid technique combining discrete wavelet transform (DWT), discrete cosine transform (DCT), and Huffman encoding. DWT is applied to decompose images into frequency subbands, then DCT is applied to the low-frequency subbands. Huffman encoding is also used. This hybrid technique achieves higher compression ratios than standalone DWT and DCT, with better peak signal-to-noise ratios to measure reconstructed image quality. Simulation results on medical and other images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hybrid compression method.

Digital watermarking with a new algorithmeSAT Journals
Abstract Everyday millions of data need to transmit through a distinct channel for various purposes; as a result there is a certain chance of third person interruption on that data. In this regards digital watermarking is one of the best solution. This paper proposes a new embedding algorithm (NEA) of digital watermarking. The algorithm is performed for digital image as data. The performance is compared for NEA and well established Cox's modified embedding algorithm. The watermarking is based on discrete wavelet transforms (DWT) and discrete cosine transforms (DCT). The acceptance of the new algorithm is measured by the two requirements of digital watermarking. One is imperceptibility of the watermarked image, measured by peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) in dB; another one is robustness of the mark image, measured by correlation of original mark image and recovering mark image. Here a 512×512 gray scale "Lena" and "Cameraman's" image is taken as host images, and a 128×128 gray scale image is taken as mark image for 2 level of DWT. The simulation results for different attacking conditions such as salt and pepper attack, additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) attack, jpg compression attack, gamma attack, histogram attack, cropping attack, sharpening attack etc. After different attacks the changing tendency PSNR for both algorithms are similar. But the mean square error (MSE) value of NEA is always less than Cox’s modified algorithm, which means that after embedding the changes of the host image property lower for NEA than Cox’s algorithm. From the simulation results it can be said that NEA will be a substitute of modified Cox’s algorithm with better performance. Keywords: Digital watermark, DWT, DCT, Cox’s modified algorithm, Lena image, Cameraman image, AWGN, JPG, salt and pepper attack, PSNR, correlation, MSE.

Features are extracted from the gray-scale and individual color planes of images. Fractional coefficients, representing percentages of the full transformed image, are used to reduce feature vector size and speed up retrieval times compared to using the full transform. Digital watermarking is the process of embedding information into digital multimedia content such that the information (which we call the watermark) can later be extracted or detected for a variety of purposes including copy prevention and control.
This document discusses different techniques for digital image watermarking, including in the spatial and frequency domains. It provides an overview of watermarking concepts and applications. It then describes two watermarking algorithms - one that embeds watermarks in the spatial domain by modifying pixel intensities in selected image blocks, and another that embeds watermarks in the wavelet domain by modifying selected wavelet coefficients. Both algorithms are described step-by-step and include watermark insertion and extraction procedures. Results are provided showing the performance of the algorithms under different attacks in terms of normalized cross-correlation between the original and extracted watermarks.
Digital watermarking involves hiding identification information within digital content like images, video and audio. It can be used to authenticate ownership and detect unauthorized copying. There are two main types - visible watermarks which can be seen overlaid on an image, and invisible watermarks which are imperceptible but can be detected algorithmically. Digital watermarking works by imperceptibly altering content to embed a message. It has applications in copyright protection, content management, and tracking of digital media. The embedded data, or watermark, must be invisible, inseparable from the content, and not increase the file size. The Digital Watermarking Alliance promotes standards for watermarking across different media types.

The performance of these methods for image compression has been
simulated using MATLAB.

The document concludes the hybrid approach is more suitable for
This document discusses and compares different image compression techniques.

1. The document discusses 3D discrete cosine transform (DCT) for image compression. 3D-DCT takes a sequence of frames and divides them into 8x8x8 cubes.
2. Each cube is independently encoded using 3D-DCT, quantization, and entropy encoding. This concentrates information in low frequencies.
3. The technique achieves a compression ratio of around 27 for a set of 8 frames, better than 2D JPEG. By exploiting correlations in both spatial and temporal dimensions, 3D-DCT allows for improved compression over 2D transforms.

It proposes CBIR techniques that extract features from images transformed using discrete cosine, Walsh, Haar, Kekre, discrete sine, slant, and discrete Hartley transforms. Features are extracted from the gray-scale and individual color planes of images. Fractional coefficients, representing percentages of the full transformed image, are used to reduce feature vector size and speed up retrieval times compared to using the full transform. Report on Digital Watermarking Technology vijay rastogi
This document provides an introduction to wavelet transforms. It begins with an outline of topics to be covered, including an overview of wavelet transforms, the limitations of Fourier transforms, the historical development of wavelets, the principle of wavelet transforms, examples of applications, and references. It then discusses the stationarity of signals and how Fourier transforms cannot show when frequency components occur over time. Short-time Fourier analysis is introduced as a solution, but it is noted that wavelet transforms provide a more flexible approach by allowing the window size to vary. The document proceeds to define what a wavelet is, discuss the historical development of wavelet theory, provide examples of popular mother wavelets, and explain the steps to compute a continuous wave
This document summarizes a student project on implementing lossless discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and inverse discrete wavelet transform (IDWT). It provides an overview of the project, which includes introducing DWT, reviewing literature on lifting schemes for faster DWT computation, and simulating a 2D (5,3) DWT. The results show DWT blocks decomposing signals into high and low pass coefficients. Applications mentioned are in medical imaging, signal denoising, data compression and image processing. The conclusion discusses the need for lossless transforms in medical imaging. Future work could extend this to higher level transforms and applications like compression and watermarking.
Digital image watermarking is a technique to hide information (the watermark) within an image. It can be used for identification, authentication, and copyright protection. There are different domains to embed watermarks, including the spatial, wavelet, and frequency domains. The watermark is imperceptible, robust, inseparable from the image, and provides security. Watermarks can be extracted from the watermarked image after embedding.
Digital watermarking techniques can be used to hide copyright information in digital media such as images, audio, and video. There are three main phases in a digital watermarking system: embedding, where the watermark is hidden in the cover media; attacks, where the watermarked content may be modified; and extraction, where the watermark is detected. Watermarking techniques can be classified based on various parameters such as whether they produce robust or fragile watermarks, the domain in which embedding occurs (spatial or frequency), and whether keys are required for embedding and detection. Common spatial domain techniques include least significant bit embedding and spread spectrum modulation, while frequency domain techniques operate in the discrete cosine transform or discrete wavelet transform domains.

This document discusses digital image processing and image compression. It covers 5 units: digital image fundamentals, image transforms, image enhancement, image filtering and restoration, and image compression. Image compression aims to reduce the size of image data and is important for applications like facsimile transmission and CD-ROM storage. There are two types of compression - lossless, where the original and reconstructed data are identical, and lossy, which allows some loss for higher compression ratios. Factors to consider for compression method selection include whether lossless or lossy is needed, coding efficiency, complexity tradeoffs, and the application.

Image compression and reconstruction using improved Stockwell transform for q...IJECEIAES
Image compression is an important stage in picture processing since it reduces the data extent and promptness of image diffusion and storage, whereas image reconstruction helps to recover the original information that was communicated. Wavelets are commonly cited as a novel technique for image compression, although the production of waves proceeding smooth areas with the image remains unsatisfactory. Stockwell transformations have been recently entered the arena for image compression and reconstruction operations. As a result, a new technique for image compression based on the improved Stockwell transform is proposed. The discrete cosine transforms, which involves bandwidth partitioning is also investigated in this work to verify its experimental results. Wavelet-based techniques such as multilevel Haar wavelet, generic multiwavelet transform, Shearlet transform, and Stockwell transforms were examined in this paper. The MATLAB technical computing language is utilized in this work to implement the existing approaches as well as the suggested improved Stockwell transform. The standard images mostly used in digital image processing applications, such as Lena, Cameraman and Barbara are investigated in this work. To evaluate the approaches, quality constraints such as mean square error (MSE), normalized cross-correlation (NCC), structural content (SC), peak noise ratio, average difference (AD), normalized absolute error (NAE) and maximum difference are computed and provided in tabular and graphical representations.

Implementation of Fractal Image Compression on Medical Images by Different Ap...ijtsrd
FIC Fractal Image Processing is actually a JPG image which needs to be perform large scale encoding to improve and increase the compression ratio. In this paper we are going to analyze different constraints and algorithms of image processing in MATLAB so that there will be very low loss in image quality. It has been seen that whenever we contain any HD picture that to in medical application we need to sharpen the image that is we need to perform image encryption, image de noising and there should be no loss in image quality. In this paper, we actualized both consecutive and parallel adaptation of fractal picture pressure calculations utilizing programming show for parallelizing the program in Graphics Processing Unit for medicinal pictures, as they are very comparable inside the picture itself. Whenever we consider an image into fractal image, it has great importance and application in image processing field. In this paper compression scheme is used to sharpen and smoothen of image by using various image processing algorithm. There are a few enhancements in the usage of the calculation too. Fractal picture pressure is based on the self closeness of a picture, which means a picture having closeness in dominant part of the locales. We accept this open door to execute the pressure calculation and screen the impact of it utilizing both parallel and successive execution. Fractal pressure has the property of high pressure rate and the dimensionless plan. Pressure plot for fractal picture is of two kind, one is encoding and another is deciphering. Encoding is especially computational costly. Then again interpreting is less computational. The use of fractal pressure to restorative pictures would permit acquiring a lot higher pressure proportions. While the fractal amplification an indivisible element of the fractal pressure would be helpful in showing the recreated picture in an exceedingly meaningful structure. Be that as it may, similar to all irreversible strategies, the fractal pressure is associated with the issue of data misfortune, which is particularly troublesome in the therapeutic imaging. A very tedious encoding process, which can last even a few hours, is another troublesome downside of the fractal pressure. Mr. Vaibhav Vijay Bulkunde | Mr. Nilesh P. Review: Nonlinear Techniques for Analysis of Heart Rate VariabilityIJRES Journal
Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of the balance between sympathetic mediators of heart
rate that is the effect of epinephrine and norepinephrine released from sympathetic nerve fibres acting on the
sino-atrial and atrio-ventricular nodes which increase the rate of cardiac contraction and facilitate conduction at
the atrio-ventricular node and parasympathetic mediators of heart rate that is the influence of acetylcholine
released by the parasympathetic nerve fibres acting on the sino-atrial and atrio-ventricular nodes leading to a
decrease in the heart rate and a slowing of conduction at the atrio-ventricular node. Sympathetic mediators
appear to exert their influence over longer time periods and are reflected in the low frequency power(LFP) of
the HRV spectrum (between 0.04Hz and 0.15 Hz).Vagal mediators exert their influence more quickly on the
heart and principally affect the high frequency power (HFP) of the HRV spectrum (between 0.15Hz and 0.4
Hz). Thus at any point in time the LFP:HFP ratio is a proxy for the sympatho- vagal balance. Thus HRV is a
valuable tool to investigate the sympathetic and parasympathetic function of the autonomic nervous system.
Study of HRV enhance our understanding of physiological phenomenon, the actions of medications and disease
mechanisms but large scale prospective studies are needed to determine the sensitivity, specificity and predictive
values of heart rate variability regarding death or morbidity in cardiac and non-cardiac patients. This paper

The document presents a dynamic two-phase model for a fluidized bed reactor used to produce polypropylene. The model divides the reactor into an emulsion phase and bubble phase, with reaction assumed to occur in both phases. Simulation results show the temperature profile is lower than previous single-phase models due to considering both phases. Approximately 13% of the produced polymer comes from the bubble phase, demonstrating the importance of accounting for both phases.
Study and evaluation for different types of Sudanese crude oil propertiesIJRES Journal
Sudanese crude oil is regarded as one of the sweet types of crude in the world, Sulphur containing
compounds are un desirable in petroleum because they de activate the catalyst during the refining processes and
are the main source of acid rains and environmental pollution.(Mark Cullen 2001),Since it contains considerable
amount of salts and acids, it negatively impact the production facilities and transportation lines with corrosive
materials. However it suffers other problems in flow properties represented by the high viscosity and high
percentage of wax. Samples were collected after the initial and final treatment at CPF, and tested for
physical and chemical properties.wax content is in the range 23-31 weight % while asphalting content is about
0.1 weight% . Resin content is 13-7 weight % and deposits are 0.01 weight%. The carbon number distribution in
the crude is in the range 7-35 carbon atoms. The pour point vary between 39°C-42°C and the boiling point is in
the range 70 °C - 533 °C.

Wear Analysis on Cylindrical Cam with Flexible RodIJRES Journal
Firstly, the kinetic equation of spatial cylindrical cam with flexible rod has been established. Then, an
accurate cylindrical cam mechanism model has been established based on the spatial modeling software
Solidworks. The dynamic effect of flexible rod on mechanical system was studied in detail based on the
mechanical system dynamics analytical software Adams, and Archard wear model is used to predict the wear of
the cam. We used Ansys to create finite element model of the cam link, extracted the first five order mode to
export into Adams. The simulation results show that the dynamic characteristics of spatial cylindrical cam
mechanical system with flexible rod is closed to ideal mechanism. During the cam rotate one cycle, the collision
in the linkage with a clearance occurs in some special location, others still keep a continuous contact, and the
prediction of wear loss is smaller than rigid body.

An improved fading Kalman filter in the application of BDS dynamic positioningIJRES Journal
Aiming at the poor dynamic performance and low navigation precision of traditional fading
Kalman filter in BDS dynamic positioning, an improved fading Kalman filter based on fading factor vector is
proposed. The fading factor is extended to a fading factor vector, and each element of the vector corresponds to
each state component. Based on the difference between the actual observed quantity and the predicted one, the
value of the vector is changed automatically. The memory length of different channel is changed in real time
according to the dynamic property of the corresponding state component. The actual observation data of BDS is
used to test the algorithm. The experimental results show that compared with the traditional fading Kalman filter
and the method of the third references, the positioning precision of the algorithm is improved by 46.3% and
23.6% respectively.
Positioning Error Analysis and Compensation of Differential Precision WorkbenchIJRES Journal
The document analyzes positioning errors in differential precision workbenches and proposes a compensation method. It discusses sources of error in workbench transmission systems and guides. Through theoretical analysis and experimentation, it is shown that positioning errors increase with travel distance due to factors like guideway errors. A method is developed to sample positioning at multiple points, compare values to identify errors, and implement reverse error correction through motion control cards. This allows positioning accuracy better than 15 micrometers over 150mm of travel to be achieved. The compensation method can improve precision for a range of machine tool designs.

temperature on the thermal comfort of the system. Eventually, the supply water temperature that makes people in
the room feel more comfortable is obtained. The result shows that in the condition of that the outside temperature
is 8~15℃ and the relative humidity is 30~70%RH, the temperature distribution in the room is from high to low
when the height is from bottom to top. The floor surface temperature is highest, but its uniformity is very poor.
When the heating system reaches the steady state, the air temperature of the room is uniform. When the supply
water temperature is 63℃ The room is relatively comfortable at the above experimental condition.
Experimental study on critical closing pressure of mudstone fractured reservoirsIJRES Journal
This study examines the critical closing pressure of fractures in mudstone reservoir cores from the Daqing oilfield in China. Laboratory experiments subjected fractured and unfractured mudstone cores to increasing external pressures while measuring permeability. The critical closing pressure is defined as the pressure when fractured core permeability matches unfractured permeability, indicating fracture closure. Results show fractured cores have higher permeability than unfractured cores due to fractures. Permeability generally decreases exponentially with increasing pressure. By calculating sensitivity equations relating permeability and production pressure difference, the study estimates critical closing pressures under reservoir conditions are lower than values from external pressure experiments. The study provides guidance but notes limitations in fully simulating complex in-situ stress conditions.

A novel high-precision curvature-compensated bandgap reference (BGR) without using op-amp
is presented in this paper. It is based on second-order curvature correction principle, which is a weighted sum of
two voltage curves which have opposite curvature characteristic. One voltage curve is achieved by first-order
curvature-compensated bandgap reference (FCBGR) without using op-amp and the other found by using W

negative TC current to flow a linear resistor. The exponential current is gained by using anegative TC voltage to
control a MOSFET in sub-threshold region. In the temperature ranging from -40℃ to 125℃, experimental
results implemented with SMIC 0.18μm CMOS process demonstrate that the presented BGR can achieve a TC

While the range of the supply voltage is from 1.7 to 3.0 V, the output voltage line regulation is about1 mV/ V
and the maximum TC is 3.4 ppm/℃.
Structural aspect on carbon dioxide capture in nanotubesIJRES Journal

to investigate the capturing capacity of the materials at nanoscale. Here we have considered the three different
nanotubes including zinc oxide nanotube (ZnONT), silicon carbide nanotube (SiCNT) and single walled carbon
nanotube (SWCNT). Three different chiralities such as zigzag (9,0), armchair (5,5) and chiral (6,4) having
approximately same diameter are analyzed. The adsorption binding energy values under various cases are
estimated with density functional theory (DFT). We observed CO2 molecule chemisorbed on ZnONT and
SiCNT’s whereas the physisorption is predominant in CNT. To investigate the structural aspect, the tubes with
defects are studied and compared with defect free tubes. We have also analyzed the electrical properties of tubes

Abstract— Data compression which can be lossy or lossless is required to decrease the storage requirement and
better data transfer rate. One of the best image compression techniques is using wavelet transform. It is
comparatively new and has many advantages over others. Wavelet transform uses a large variety of wavelets for
decomposition of images. The state of the art coding techniques like HAAR, SPIHT (set partitioning in
hierarchical trees) and use the wavelet transform as basic and common step for their own further technical
advantages. The wavelet transform results therefore have the importance which is dependent on the type of
wavelet used .In our thesis we have used different wavelets to perform the transform of a test image and the results
have been discussed and analyzed. Haar, Sphit wavelets have been applied to an image and results have been
compared in the form of qualitative and quantitative analysis in terms of PSNR values and compression ratios.
Elapsed times for compression of image for different wavelets have also been computed to get the fast image
compression method. The analysis has been carried out in terms of PSNR (peak signal to noise ratio) obtained
and time taken for decomposition and reconstruction.

I. INTRODUCTION
Image Compression has become the most recent emerging trend throughout the world. Some of the
common advantages image compressions over the internet are reduction in time of webpage uploading and
downloading and lesser storage space in terms of bandwidth. Compressed images also make it possible to view
more images in a shorter period of time [1].Image compression is essential where images need to be stored,
transmitted or viewed quickly and efficiently. The benefits can be classified under two ways as follows: First,
even uncompressed raw images can be stored and transmitted easily. Secondly, compression provides better
resources for transmission and storage.
Image compression is the representation of image in a digitized form with a few bits maintenance only allowing
acceptable level of image quality.
Compression addresses the problem of reducing the amount of data required to represent a digital image.
A good compression scheme is always composed of many compression methods namely wavelet transformation,
predicative coding, and vector quantization and so on. Wavelet transformation is an essential coding technique for
both spatial and frequency domains, where it is used to divide the information of an image into approximation and
detail sub signals [2].
Image Compression is an important component of the solutions available for creating image file sizes of
manageable and transmittable dimensions. Platform portability and performance are important in the selection of
the compression/decompression technique to be employed [3]. Images have considerably higher storage
requirement than text; Audio and Video Data require more demanding properties for data storage. An image
stored in an uncompressed file format, such as the popular BMP format, can be huge. An image with a pixel
resolution of 640 by 480 pixels and 24-bit colour resolution will take up 640 * 480 * 24/8 = 921,600 bytes in an
uncompressed format. The huge amount of storage space is not only the consideration but also the data
transmission rates for communication of continuous media are also significantly large. This kind of data transfer
rate is not realizable with today’s technology, or in near the future with reasonably priced hardware.
Image compression addresses the problem of reducing the amount of data required to represent a digital
image. It is a process intended to yield a compact representation of an image, thereby reducing the image
storage/transmission requirements. Compression is achieved by the removal of one or more of the three basic data
redundancies:
1. Coding Redundancy 2. Inter-pixel Redundancy 3. Psych-visual Redundancy
II. IMAGE COMPRESSION PRINCIPLES
Image compression reduces the number of bits required to represent the image, therefore the amount of
memory required to store the data set is reduced. It also reduces the amount of time required to transmit a data set
over a communication link at a given rate. Different methods are developed to perform the image compression.
2. Enhanced Image Compression Using Wavelets

The compression ratio is one of the quantitative parameters to measure the performance of compression methods.
Compression ratio is defined as ratio of the size of original data set to the size of the compressed data set. There are
various methods of compressing still images, but every method has three basic steps involved in any of the data
compression scheme: Transformation, reduced precision (quantization or thresholding), and minimization of
number of bits to represent the image(encoding). The basic block diagram of compression scheme is shown in
Fig.1.
Figure1: The Block Diagram of Compression Scheme
2.1. Transformation
For image compression, it is desirable that the selection of transform should reduce the size of resultant
data set as compared to source data set. Few transformations reduce the number of data items in the data set. Few
transformations reduce the numerical size of the data items that allows them to represent by the fewer binary bits.
In data compression, transform is intended to decorelate the input signals by transformation. The data represented
in the new system has properties that facilitate the compression. Some mathematical
transformations have been invented for the sole purpose of data compression; selection of proper transform is one
of the important factors in data compression scheme. It still remains an active field of research. The technical
name given to these processes of transformation is mapping. Some mathematical transformations have been
invented for the sole purpose of data compression, other have been borrowed from various applications and
applied to data compression.
2.2. Quantization/Thresholding
In the process of quantization each sample is scaled by the quantization factor. Where as in the process of
thresholding the samples are eliminated if the value of sample is less than the defined threshold value. These two
methods are responsible for introduction of error and it leads in degrading the quality. The degradation is based on
selection of quantization factor and threshold value. For the high value of threshold the loss of information is
more, and for low value of threshold the loss of information is less. By considering the resultant loss of
information, the selection of threshold should be low, but for the low value of the threshold there is negligible
compression of data. Hence quantization factor, or threshold value should be selected in such a way that it should
satisfy the constraints of human visual system for better visual quality, and high compression ratio. Human Visual
System is less sensitive to high frequency signal and more sensitive to low frequency signal. By considering this
phenomenon, the threshold value or quantization factor is selected and thresholding/ quantization take place in
image compression.
2.3. Encoding
This phase of compression reduces the overall number of bits needed to represent the data set. An entropy
encoder further compresses the quantized values to give better overall compression. This process removes the
redundancy in the form of repetitive bit patterns in the output of quantizer. It uses a model to accurately determine
the probabilities for each quantized value and produces an appropriate code based on these probabilities so that the
resultant output code stream will be smaller than most commonly used entropy encoders.
III. LITERATURE REVIEW
―Ming Yang & Nikolaos Bourbakis (2005) et al. [3] discussed the objective of compression is to reduce
the number of its as much as possible, while keeping the resolution and the visual quality of the reconstructed
image as close to the original image as possible. Image compression systems are composed of two distinct
structural blocks: an encoder and a decoder [3], [4].
3. Enhanced Image Compression Using Wavelets
www.ijres.org 57 | Page
Figure 2 Image compression encoder and decoder
The image compression techniques are broadly classified into two categories depending whether or not
an exact replica of the original image could be reconstructed using the compressed image [5].These are:
1. Lossless technique: Lossless coding guaranties that the decompressed image is absolutely identical to the
image before compression. This is an important requirement for some application domains, e.g. Medical Imaging,
where not only high quality is in the demand, but unaltered archiving is a legal requirement. Lossless techniques
can also be used for the compression of other data types where loss of information is not acceptable, e.g. text
documents and program executable.
2. Lossy technique: Lossy compression contains degradation relative to the original. Often this is because the
compression schemes are capable of achieving much higher compression. Under normal viewing conditions, no
visible loss is perceived (visually Lossless).
Chui, Charles (1992) et al. [6] discusses the similarities and dissimilarities between Fourier and Wavelet
transform. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) are both linear operations
and the mathematical properties of the matrices involved in the transforms are similar as well. The inverse
transform matrix for both the FFT and the DWT is the transpose of the original. As a result, both transforms can be
viewed as a rotation in function space to a different domain. For the FFT, this new domain contains basis functions
that are sine’s and cosines. For the wavelet transform, this new domain contains more complicated basis functions
called wavelets, mother wavelets, or analysing wavelets. Both transforms have another similarity. The basis
functions are localized in frequency, making mathematical tools such as power spectra (how much power is
contained in a frequency interval) and scale grams (to be defined later) useful at picking out frequencies and
calculating power distributions. The most interesting dissimilarity between these two kinds of transforms is that
individual wavelet functions are localized in space. Fourier sine and cosine functions are not. This localization
feature, along with wavelets' localization of frequency, makes many functions and operators using wavelets
"sparse" when transformed into the wavelet domain. This sparseness, in turn, results in a number of useful
applications such as data compression, detecting features in images, and removing noise.
Jun Wang and H. K. Huang(1996) et al. [7] proposes a three-dimensional (3-D) medical image
compression method for computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) that uses a separable
non-uniform 3-D wavelet transform. The separable wavelet transform employs one filter bank within
two-dimensional (2-D) slices and then a second filter bank on the slice direction. CT and MR image sets normally
have different resolutions within a slice and between slices. The pixel distances within a slice are normally less
than 1 mm and the distance between slices can vary from 1 mm to 10 mm. To find the best filter bank in the slice
direction author uses the various filter banks in the slice direction and compare the compression results. The
results from the 12 selected MR and CT image sets at various slice thickness show that the Haar transform in the
slice direction gives the optimum performance for most image sets, except for a CT image set which has 1 mm
slice distance. Compared with 2-D wavelet compression, compression ratios of the 3-D method are about 70%
higher for CT and 35% higher for MR image sets at a peak signail to noise ratio (PSNR) of 50 dB. In general, the
smaller the slice distances, the better the 3-D compression performance. The decompressed image quality is
measured by the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) defined as
where fmax is the maximum gray level of the image set, N is total number of pixels, f ( x , y; 2) is the original
image, and ,fc(x, y, z ) is the decompressed image. The denominator is the root mean square (rms) error of the
decompressed image. The larger the PSNR, the better the decompressed image quality is. The compression
performance is measured by compression ratio (CR) which is defined as
4. Enhanced Image Compression Using Wavelets

The image sets were also compressed with the 3-D wavelet compression method and a 2-D wavelet
compression method. In the 3-D compression method, the Haar filter was used in the z direction. The 2-D
compression algorithm was similar to the 3-D compression algorithm except that a 2-D wavelet transform was
applied to each slice. Multiple slices are simply compressed slice by slice with the 2-D method and the final
compression ratio is obtained by averaging whole set of 3-D data.
Colm Mulcahy (1997) et al. [8] gives a brief introduction to the subject by showing how the Haar wavelet
transform allows information to be encoded according to ―levels of detail." Author uses the Haar wavelet
transform and explains how it can explain how it can be used to produce images. Matlab numerical and
visualization software was used to perform all of the calculations and generate and display all of the pictures. they
describe a scheme for transforming such large arrays of numbers into arrays that can be stored and transmitted
more efficiently; the original images (or good approximations of them) can then be reconstructed by a computer
with relatively little effort. Author demonstrated how to wavelet transform a matrix describing a method for
transforming strings of data called averaging and differencing. The technique to transform an entire matrix as
follows: Treat each row as a string, and perform the averaging and differencing on each one to obtain a new
matrix, and then apply exactly the same steps on each column of this new matrix, finally obtaining a row and
column transformed matrix. It was concluded that wavelets provide an alternative to classical Fourier methods for
both one- and multi-dimensional data analysis and synthesis, and have numerous applications both within
mathematics (e.g., to partial differential operators) and in areas as diverse as physics, seismology, medical
imaging, digital image processing, signal processing, and computer graphics and video. Unlike their Fourier
cousins, wavelet methods make no assumptions concerning periodicity of the data at hand.
Vinay U. Kale & Nikkoo N. (2010) et al. [9] explains Discrete Cosine Transform, Discrete Wavelet
Transform. The discrete cosine transform (DCT) helps separate the image into parts (or spectral sub-bands) of
differing importance (with respect to the image's visual quality). The DCT is similar to the discrete Fourier
transform: it transforms a signal or image from the spatial domain to the frequency domain. The discrete wavelet
transform (DWT) refers to wavelet transforms for which the wavelets are discretely sampled. The transform is
based on a wavelet matrix, which can be computed more quickly than the analogous Fourier matrix. Most notably,
the discrete wavelet transform is used for signal coding, where the properties of the transform are exploited to
represent a discrete signal in a more redundant form, often as a preconditioning for data compression. It was also
concluded that the human eye is fairly good at seeing small differences in brightness over a relatively large area,
but not so good at distinguishing the exact strength of a high frequency brightness variation. This fact allows one
to get away with greatly reducing the amount of information in the high frequency components. This is done by
simply dividing each component in the frequency domain by a constant for that component, and then rounding to
the nearest integer. This is the main lossy operation in the whole process. As a result of this, it is typically the case
that many of the higher frequency components are rounded to zero, and many of the rest become small positive or
negative numbers.
IV. HAAR WAVELET TRANSFORM
Alfred Haar (1885-1933) was a Hungarian mathematician who worked in analysis studying orthogonal
systems of functions, partial differential equations, Chebyshev approximations and linear inequalities. In 1909
Haar introduced the Haar wavelet theory. A Haar wavelet is the simplest type of wavelet . In discrete form, Haar
wavelets are related to a mathematical operation called the Haar transform..
The mathematical prerequesites will be kept to a minimum; indeed, the main concepts can be understood in terms
of addition, subtraction and division by two. We also present a linear algebra implementation of the Haar wavelet
transform, and mention important recent generalizations.
Like all wavelet transforms, the Haar transform decomposes a discrete signal into two subsignals of half its length.
The Haar wavelet transform has a number of advantages:
It is conceptually simple and fast
It is memory efficient, since it can be calculated in place without a temporary array.
It is exactly reversible without the edge effects that are a problem with other wavelet transforms.
It provides high compression ratio and high PSNR (Peak signal to noise ratio).
It increases detail in a recursive manner.
The Haar Transform (HT) is one of the simplest and basic transformations from the space domain to a
local frequency domain. A HT decomposes each signal into two components, one is called average
(approximation) or trend and the other is known as difference (detail) or fluctuation.
5. Enhanced Image Compression Using Wavelets

Data compression in multimedia applications has become more vital lately where compression methods
are being rapidly developed to compress large data files such as images. Efficient methods usually succeed in
compressing images, while retaining high image quality and marginal reduction in image size.
Visual inspection and observation by humans is an empirical analysis that involves a number of people
who observe the smoothness and edge continuity of certain objects within reconstructed images and then decide
which compression ratio provides a compromise between high compression ratio and minimal loss of quality.
The aim of this paper is to give brief introduction to the subject by showing how the Haar wavelet
transform allows information to be encoded according to levels of detail." In one sense, this parallels the way in
which we often process information in our everyday lives. Our investigations enable us to give two interesting
applications of wavelet methods to digital images: compression and progressive transmission.
The mathematical prerequesites will be kept to a minimum; indeed, the main concepts can be understood
in terms of addition, subtraction and division by two. We also present a linear algebra implementation of the Haar
wavelet transform, and mention important recent generalizations.
V. SPIHT
SPIHT is a wavelet-based image compression coder. It first converts the image into its wavelet transform
and then transmits information about the wavelet coefficients. The decoder uses the received signal to reconstruct
the wavelet and performs an inverse transform to recover the image. We selected SPIHT because SPIHT and its
predecessor, the embedded zerotree wavelet coder, were significant breakthroughs in still image compression in
that they offered significantly improved quality over vector quantization, JPEG, and wavelets combined with
quantization, while not requiring training and producing an embedded bit stream. SPIHT displays exceptional
characteristics over several properties
all at once [12] including:
· Good image quality with a high PSNR
· Fast coding and decoding
· A fully progressive bit-stream
· Can be used for lossless compression
· May be combined with error protection
· Ability to code for exact bit rate or PSNR
The Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) runs a high and low-pass filter over the signal in one dimension.
The result is a new image comprising of a high and low-pass subband. This procedure is then repeated in the other
dimension yielding four subbands, three high-pass components and one lowpass component. The next wavelet
level is calculated by repeating the horizontal and vertical transformations on the low-pass subband from the
previous level. The DWT repeats this procedure for however many levels are required. Each procedure is fully
reversible (within the limits of fixed precision) so that the original image can be reconstructed from the wavelet
transformed image.
SPIHT is a method of coding and decoding the wavelet transform of an image. By coding and
transmitting information about the wavelet coefficients, it is possible for a decoder to perform an inverse
transformation on the wavelet and reconstruct the original image. The entire wavelet transform does not need to be
transmitted in order to recover the image. Instead, as the decoder receives more information about the original
wavelet transform, the inverse-transformation will yield a better quality reconstruction (i.e. higher peak signal to
noise ratio) of the original image.
SPIHT generates excellent image quality and performance due to several properties of the coding
algorithm. They are partial ordering by coefficient value, taking advantage of redundancies between different
wavelet scales and transmitting data in bit plane order [13].
Following a wavelet transformation, SPIHT divides the wavelet into Spatial Orientation Trees. Each node in the
tree corresponds to an individual pixel.
The offspring of a pixel are the four pixels in the same spatial location of the same subband at the next
finer scale of the wavelet. Pixels at the finest scale of the wavelet are the leaves of the tree and have no children.
Every pixel is part of a 2 x 2 block with its adjacent pixels. Blocks are a natural result of the hierarchical trees
because every pixel in a block shares the same parent. Also, the upper left pixel of each 2 x 2 block at the root of
the tree has no children since there only 3 subbands at each scale and not four. Figure 3 shows how the pyramid is
defined. Arrows point to the offspring of an individual pixel, and the grayed blocks show all of the descendents for
a specific pixel at every scale.

VI. CONCLUSION
This paper reported is aimed at developing computationally efficient and effective algorithm for lossy
image compression using wavelet techniques. So this proposed algorithm developed to compress the image so
fastly. The promising results obtained concerning reconstructed image quality as well as preservation of
significant image details, while on the other hand achieving high compression rates.
