Liquid-Liquid Extraction
techniques
Use balance to
weigh solids
TARE by pressing
->0/T<- Test tube is supported in a beaker
-> to subtract the weight
of the glassware
Add chemical to glassware after removing it
from the balance
Record measurement
Add organic solvent
Mix with pipette,
aspirate and expel
Solid has dissolved
in organic solvent
Add aqueous layer
meniscus
- Use pipette to mix layers
- Allow mixture to separate
Layers are separated
Label receiving test tube
Pipette
Both test tubes are held with
the same hand
transfer bottom layer
transferred
aqueous layer
Precipitate solid from aqueous layer
solid formation
Label receiving vessel
ether layer
compressed air jet
carefully turn on
compressed air to
get a gentle stream
solid deposits on the
side of the test tube
ether evaporates
Clean up
solids that are insoluble in water (benzophenone) are rinsed with
acetone into the flammable waste
Discard used chemicals in the
appropriate waste collector
Rinse all glassware with hot
water
Place rinsed glassware in proper basket

Editor's Notes

  • #2 slide n:  wasn't there a slide showing that glassware was to be stored in the locker upside down on a piece of paper towel to allow it to drain?

  • #19 label receiving vessel
  • #21 soli deposits on the side of the tt, (benzophenone)
  • #23 solids that are insoluble in water (benzophenone) are rinsed with acetone into the flammable waste
  • #24 discard use chemicals in the appropriate waste collector
  • #25 rinse all glassware with hot water
