Communication
and Process of
Communication
Lesson 1
Communication: Etymology
•The word communication originated from
two Latin words, communis and
communicare. Communis means to “make
common” and communicare means “to
make common to many, share”.
What is Communication?
•Communication is a process of sharing
experiences among people that is clear and
understandable (Hamilton 2005;Tubs
2013).
•Communication is the transmission of
ideas and emotions between and among
people with the use of verbal and non-
verbal cues.
VERBAL
– consisting of or using words only and
not involving action.
– voice words/letters
NON-VERBAL
– not involving or using words.
– sign language/hand gestures, facial
expression, posture, and action
What is Communication?
•It is the process of expressing and
exchanging information, thoughts, ideas
and feelings.
•Involves a series of actions that lead to
particular result such as passing of a
message and exchange of ideas among
others.
• The sender transmits his message to the receiver.
The recipient then tries to understand the message,
and if he does, communication takes place. He may
then give his feedback.
Activity
1. How will you define communication using your own
words?
2. How would you find out if the message you are
trying to send has been properly received?
3. What would probably happen if people could not
communicate with one another? Explain your
answer by citing examples.
4. Why does the word communication important to
you?
5. Create a model of your concept of communication.
Use feedback from your classmates to make any
necessary improvements. Share your model to the
class.
