Lead Poisoning In Prenatal Development
The prenatal affects of lead poisoning greatly influence the child s early life from mental disorders to
poor health. According to one of my sources, high Blood Lead Levels (BLLs) around 350 micro
grams in infants during pregnancy can result in various birth defects such as reduced gestational age,
weight at birth, and facial deformities. As well as other various mental affects ranging from, anaemia,
impaired visual and motor functions, hearing loss, mild mental developmental delay, attention spans,
and reading and learning disabilities (Ronchetti, Van Den Hazel, Schoeters, Hanke, Rennezova,
Barreto, Villa, M. P. 2006). Lead poisoning in prenatal development is an unexpected and unfavorable
outcome. While children can t grasp the dire consequences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

While Flint has a significant industrial history, the location of possibly manufacturing plants that used
lead at one point n production did not correspond with the exposure of lead in water. Since there is no
known alternative source for the increased lead exposure during this time period, the innate corrosive
properties of the Flint River water, and lack of corrosion control, strongly suggest the change in water
source as the apparent cause of the increase in EBLL percentage. Children in Flint Michigan already
suffer from risk factors that increase their lead exposure such as poor nutrition, and poverty. Due to
limited means of protection such as scarce resources for alternatives to water, lead in water in addition
exacerbates the preexisting risk factors. Increased levels of lead poisoning rates have significant
meaning for the development of an entire generation of Flint children, already inflicted with teratogen

Class Reflection Essay
I went to Ning s informational speech section. The classroom is located room 209 at Williams
Building (WMS). It took me a while to find this building because I seldom go to the area around
Westcott Fountain. Williams is large compound building that served as lecture halls and classrooms
for undergraduate s general education courses. Room 209 is where the public speech class took place.
It is a middle size classroom in the corner and next to a lounge area. I saw some of the students
rehearsal their informative speech at the lounge when I arrived early and wait for Ning to come. Ning
s class has 15 students with varying major background. On the day I visited, most of the students came
to class on time. Three students arrived about 5 minutes late, and Ning said she would mark them as
late. Ning told me that too many late marks would negatively affect the student s participation final
grade. I learned a lot of teaching skills from Ning, such as how to start the class lively, how to
organize student s speech and how to claim down students when facing unpredicted things. Ning
started her class by showing a video clip of humorous talk show. I think it is an effective way to
reduce student s pre performance anxiety. She then overviewed what the class was going to do and
gave updates on class assignments. Then, Ning asked volunteer students give the first speech. Others
could just step to the front if they felt like they are ready to go. I think this is the best way to

The Problem Of Homeless Youth
Theoretical Framework
Homeless Youth
11/1/2014
Ken Dix
Homeless youth are a standout amongst the most underestimated gatherings in our general public.
Numerous specialists recognize much more elevated amounts of different issue practices among these
adolescent contrasted with their non homeless associates. The current study analyzed the utility of
social capital in foreseeing issue practices among homeless youth.
Homelessness is portrayed as circumstances of people or family units without steady, uninterrupted,
proper lodging, or the quick prospect, means and capacity of getting it. It is the aftereffect of universal
or public obstructions, an absence of reasonable and suitable lodging, the individual/family unit s
money related, mental, cognitive, behavioral or physical difficulties, and/or bigotry and segregation. A
majority of individuals don t decide to be dispossessed, and the occurrence is usually negative,
unsavory, upsetting and troubling
In the reading of Toward a needs based typology of homeless youth. Journal of Adolescent Health the
schemas was a little different. In the article they look at homeless in youth in four categories.
Homeless youth are now widely recognized and accepted in the literature: situational runaways,
runaways, throwaways, and systems youth (Coward Bucher, C, 2008)
Homelessness depicts the circumstances of an individual or family without steady, lasting, fitting
lodging, or the quick prospect, means and capacity of securing

A Note on the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster
The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster: The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is an accident that took place at a
nuclear power plant in Ukraine in April 1986. The accident was because of a flawed Soviet reactor
design, severe mistakes by the plant operators, and direct result of Cold War isolation. As the resultant
steam explosion and fires emitted radioactive reactor core into the downwind and the Earth s
atmosphere, the accident was also attributed to the lack of any safety culture. The Chernobyl Nuclear
Disaster was a unique event because it s the only accident in commercial nuclear power history in
which radiation related losses took place. Nonetheless, the design of the reactor is exceptional and the
disaster of minimal relevance to other elements of the nuclear industry.
Background on the Disaster: The Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant consisted of four nuclear reactors
with each of them capable of producing 1 gigawatt of electric power. During the time when the
disaster took place, these four reactors were producing approximately 10 percent of the electricity
used in Ukraine. The construction of this power plant started in the 1970s with the first reactor
commissioned in 1977 and the fourth in 1983. At the time when the disaster happened, the other two
nuclear reactors were still under construction (West par, 4). In April 1986, the operating crew planned
to evaluate whether the turbines of the fourth reactor could produce adequate energy to maintain the
running of the coolant

Fellowship Of The Ring Movie And Book Comparison Essay
The Fellowship of the Ring Book/Movie Comparison Written by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of
the Ring was released in 1954; it is the first book in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The plot centers
around a young hobbit, Frodo Baggins, who must embark on a treacherous journey to destroy the One
Ring. He is accompanied by Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Some of the other key characters include
Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir, and Gimli. A movie adaptation was released in 2001. Although it
is tremendously rare, in this case, the movie adaptation more efficiently tells the story than the book.
The book commences with Bilbo Baggins one hundred and eleventh birthday celebration (Tolkien 21
30). At the end of his party, Bilbo announces that he is going to depart. Suddenly, he mysteriously
vanishes, and the crowd is astounded (Tolkien 30). Bilbo quickly runs to his home, grabs his
belongings, and walks out the door, vowing never to return. However, right before he departs, he is
briefly visited by Gandalf the wizard. Gandalf encourages him to leave behind a ring (Tolkien 33 34).
At this point in the story, the reader has no clue about the significance of the ring or ... Show more

However, sometimes this acute detail is unnecessary. For an example: throughout the book, Frodo and
his companions spend a large portion of time wandering through the woods, avoiding the Black Riders
who desire to seize the One Ring from Frodo (Tolkien 70 145). All of this time spent wandering is not
important to the story and can quite quickly make the reader lose interest or become bored. While it is
necessary to show Frodo traveling, it is not necessary to have seventy five pages dedicated to traveling
through the woods. In the movie, the time spent traveling through the woods is very brief (Jackson).
This helps the viewer stay engaged in the story. The movie keeps only the important events, which
gives the viewer an easier understanding of the

Persuasive Essay On The Problems Of A Teacher
Many students and teachers in Seneca share the same goal: to make sure grades are high. For grades to
stay up, it s important that teachers make sure their students do well in class especially on the tests.
This may not seem like a problem, but it is. Students are incapable of learning to the best of their
abilities because of teachers tendencies to focus specifically on testing. In my high school career so
far, I have experienced many occasions in which this thought process has been apparent. For me,
science labs have been the most prevalent for this method of teaching. Science has always been a class
that I would receive good grades in, but looking back, it wasn t for the right reasons. My high grades
in a class like Biology didn t come from insight on how the cell works and how all the organelles
work together like a city; they came from weeks of drilling facts and information into my brain so I
could regurgitate them onto a piece of paper that meant more to me only because it was called a test or
quiz. I end up getting an A on the test which supposedly shows that my teacher did a good job
teaching. It seems like a win win situation for both parties, but in reality, this way of teaching is
problematic. The issue with teaching to the test is it impedes students from truly understanding the
content. Instead of having students go deep into a topic and fully comprehending it from several
angles, some teachers will choose a question and only consider one way to solve it.

Was Alexander Really Great
Alexander, Great or Not? Alexander was a famous leader in history portrayed as great. He was born in
356 B.C.E. in the kingdom of Macedonia. He inherited the kingdom after his father, and expanded his
empire throughout much of the known world at the time (BGE). But was Alexander actually a great
leader to his large empire? Alexander was not a good leader because he didn t have much of a concern
for others, nor good leadership. He was only kind if people forcibly accepted him as their leader,
thought too highly of himself and killed many people in his quest to conquer land. First, Alexander
was not a great leader because he was only kind to those who would surrender and accept him as their
ruler. An example of this would be the City of Tyre, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He encouraged the belief he was a god. ...Alexander developed a rather high opinion of himself,
including the growing belief that he himself was a god. (BGE). When he arrived, a priest welcomed
him as God s son . The priest s words helped Alexander gain the loyalty of the Egyptians... Alexander
also made sure to spread the story of the priest s greeting throughout the empire. Later, he required all
Greeks to accept him as the son of Zeus. (Frey 293). Alexander also named many of his own cities
after himself. He named over 11 different cities Alexandria. (Doc A). Furthermore, he didn t stop at his
already expanded empire when King Darius died, but continued to push his soldiers through battles
for his empire. He did this to his soldiers for so long, they turned on Alexander and refused to go any
farther. (BGE). In other words, Alexander thought he should be considered a god, have many cities
arrogantly named after him, and try to expand his empire to the point in which his own army would no
longer fight for him. These are not good leadership skills to have if others are looking up to you. A
final reason why Alexander was not great is that he killed many people in his conquesting of land.
Alexander brought his soldiers through many harsh conditions over several years, which lead to many
deaths (Doc D). When he conquered cities, many of those who did not accept his leadership were
killed (Doc C). In all, the estimated

Walmart Audit Fees
The audit fees for these three companies can be compared in numerous ways. First, they can be
compared by their size by looking at the total revenue and total assets. From the revenue standpoint,
Walmart had the largest amount of total revenue but paid the median amount of audit fees. On the
other hand, Microsoft had the least amount of total revenue but paid the highest amount in audit fees.
Also, Apple Inc. had the median amount of revenue but paid the least amount in audit fees. When
looking at the total assets, there is an inverse relationship between the amount of assets and the audit
fees paid. Apple Inc. had the largest amount of total assets but paid the least amount in audit fees. On
the other hand, Microsoft had the least amount of total assets but paid the most in audit fees. Finally,
Walmart had the median amount of total assets and paid the median amount in fees. Comparing the
fees by revenue did not produce any clear patterns, but comparing them by assets showed a clear
inverse relationship. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

who did the audit, it appears that Deloitte Touche charged far more than Ernst

The Great Train Robbery Silent Film Analysis
The Great Train Robbery was one of the earliest silent films, made in 1903. The film begins with two
masked robbers bursting into a railroad station office, and binding and gagging the railway dispatcher.
From the very beginning The Great Train Robbery is off to a dramatic start. It instantly engages the
viewer. A person viewing this film for the first time in 1903 would have been hooked from the start.
The film is about twelve minutes long and has a fully developed narrative and distinguishable
character types: robbers, posse members, railway workers and supporting characters.
The robbers motives are obvious from the start. After forcing the dispatcher to give a false note to the
conductor, the dispatcher is knocked out and, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

audience would have been surprised and delighted at the colored tints seen throughout the film
beginning with this one. For the time being it was as close as they would get to color in a film.
While two of the robbers have been robbing one car, another robber holds the engineer at gunpoint. A
fourth robber struggles with another man, who grabs a shovel for defense and climbs on top of the
train. They engage in a fist fight the robber takes a lump of coal and strikes the man on the head
several times until he is unconscious. Then after overpowering him, he hurls the victim s body off the
top of the moving train. Two robbers then force the engineer to bring the train to a stop
The Great Train Robbery maintains a simple plot but interestingly does not spare on violence as there
are several shootouts, many men are killed violently, as we see with the man bludgeoned with a piece
of coal. Viewers of the time were probably very surprised at the level of violence and the use of the
special effect dummy being thrown off the train must have been shocking but at the same time added
immense entertainment value to the film.
The train conductor is forced off the train and made to uncouple the locomotive from the rest of the
passenger cars. The passengers are also forced to leave the train. All of the passengers are lined up

Symbolism In William Jennings Bryan s The Wonderful...
During the late 1800 s, a pervasive sense of melancholy permeated throughout the forgotten, dreary
Midwestern United States. While the industrial revolution boosted the economy on the coasts,
Midwestern farmers were victims of deflationary debt increases, exorbitant shipping and railroad
rates, a high protective tariff, and a government that for the most part ignored them.1 Desperate
circumstances moved the everyday American farmers to join together and voice their grievances.
Instead of seeking federal aid or economic relief, they attempted to use the power of the ballot to
achieve their goals.1 The united group of farmers used the Populist Party as a springboard to launch
their complaints and eventually got their candidate, William Jennings Bryan, nominated for the
presidential election of 1896 by the Democratic Party. L. Frank Baum, a newspaper writer who lived
in a small prairie town in South Dakota, experienced the populist wave firsthand, attending Bryan s
famous Cross of Gold speech in Chicago, and subtly incorporated many aspects of Bryan s campaign
into his children s novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.2 Despite his own claim that this novel was
written solely for the entertainment of the children of today , several historians have discovered that
the book clearly reflects the culture of the time period in which it was written.3 By symbolically

An Actor Prepares By Constantin Stanislavski
All I can do is to help you feel what it is. Even to do that requires great patience, for I shall devote our
whole course to it. Or, to be more exact, it will appear by itself after you have studied our whole
system of acting and after you yourselves have made the experiment of initiating, clarifying,
transforming, simple everyday human realities into crystals of artistic truth. Teacher Mr. Tortsov,
teaches his students the fundaments in acting and how to be successful in its art, in Constantin
Stanislavski s eye opening book, An Actor Prepares. Throughout reading his book, I learned three
main lessons: how the outside impression of an actor looks or how the audience perceives them, the
inner motivation and structure of an actor, and lastly, acting is an art and properly portraying a

be through analyzing the text for overall theme, adaption to responses done by our scene partners or

the play. Analyzing the text of the play influences the character s motivation. If a character is going
over to another character s house for no reason other than to hang out, then it slows down the pace of
the show down and puts a stop in the energy of the show. Channeling the normal person inside myself,

Pictorial History of Prosthetics
In the early years of film, make up artists were not recognised for their artistic skills and ingenuity of
making prosthetics or their imagination of bringing others creations to life. Many of the artists were
also actors or stunt men who learnt the craft by applying their own make up for film and theatre.
Compared to today s materials used to make prosthetics, many of the materials they used were very
basic as they used spirit gum, fish skin, cotton, gelatin, greasepaints, collodion, cheesecloth, clay,
Fullers Earth, various putties, pastes and wax and latex. The first documented prosthetic was in the
1909 book The Art of Theater Make up by Cavendish Morton, who when transforming himself into
the character Falstaff used silk attached to a wig, nose paste, spirit gum, crepe hair and greasepaints.
By the 1920 s Lon Chaney was recognised for his ingenuity of make up and was known as The Man
of a Thousand Faces as he had the ability to change his appearance into any character he was
portraying. For example when in the film The Phantom of the Opera he used wire to widen his nostrils
and pull his nose back and completed the horrifying character by wearing jagged false teeth and clever
use of shading to give the impression of a skull like face. He also changed his complete face when
playing the role of Quasimodo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, as he created the twisted face by
using false teeth, nose putty on his cheeks and a false eye. In 1932, Jack Pierce turned

The Boy In The Striped Pajamas Analysis
World war II in Germany was a dull time for the Jews, hence they were discriminated against by the
germans. Ethnicity plays a big role in this movie because it is the reason that the Jews are locked away
in the concentration camps. The movie is a representation of Political Power becomes Personal
Authority (Nichols, 2010, P.275) in the sense that Aldorf Hitler took advantage of the vulnerable Jews.
This essay will discuss the differences between the Jews and Germans during WW II through race and
ethnicity. This will be supported from examples in the two scenes chosen, book vocabulary, as well as
the formal and social content to analyze the scenes. The movie The boy in the Striped Pajamas: is
about an 8 year old, privileged German boy named Bruno, who loves exploring, is forced to move
away from Berlin with his family to the Countryside during World War II. This is because, his father
has just gotten promoted to Commandment by Hitler himself and was asked to live closer to the
concentration camps. Bruno starts exploring the new area, and soon finds this barbed wired area where
he meets a Jewish boy named Shmuel. Shmuel is held in the concentration camps, however Bruno
does not find out the truth until the near end of the movie. Bruno and Shmuel form an undesirable
bond that later in the movie causes many tragical events. Throughout the two scenes I have chosen to

Essay on The Significance of Art in Chopin s The Awakening
Edna seeks occupational freedom in art, but lacks sufficient courage to become a true artist. As Edna
awakens to her selfhood and sensuality, she also awakens to art. Originally, Edna dabbled with
sketching in an unprofessional way (Chopin 543). She could only imitate, although poorly (Dyer 89).
She attempts to sketch Adèle Ratignolle, but the picture bore no resemblance to its subject. After her
awakening experience in Grand Isle, Edna begins to view her art as an occupation (Dyer 85). She tells
Mademoiselle Reisz that she is becoming an artist (Chopin 584). Women traditionally viewed art as a
hobby, but to Edna, it was much more important than that. Painting symbolizes Edna s independence;

Music was a means of brightening the home and making it attractive (Chopin 553). Madame
Ratignolle uses her talent to serve others. At an evening at Grand Isle, she played the piano in order
that everyone would be able to dance. Edna s artistic pursuits are very different than Madame
Ratignolle s. Edna s art represents her quest for individuality (Boren 181). Her form of art does not
provide pleasure or enrichment to her household. Instead, it takes her away from her family and her
domestic duties (Dyer 87). Edna paints in her atelier (Chopin 579). Mr. Pontellier chides Edna for
spending too much time in her atelier; he says that she would be better employed contriving for the
comfort of her family (Chopin (579). Edna makes good progress in her painting; she dreams of
becoming an artist (Chopin 584). However, her devotion to art is contrasted to that of novel s true
artist. Mademoiselle Reisz understood what it means to be an artist. She was an artist at the piano
(Chopin 554). Mademoiselle Reisz was isolated from society. She lived alone with practically no
friends, except Robert and Edna. Her proprietor described her as the most disagreeable and unpopular
woman (Chopin 580). Mademoiselle Reisz defied society s convention. She devoted herself entirely to
art; as a result, she became ostracized from society (Koloski 119). She plays music, not for others, but
for herself. She told Edna that she was the only

become infinitely more adaptable and capable than ever before . Everyone must search out totally new
ways to anchor ourselves, for all the old roots religion, nation, community, family, or profession are
now shaking under the hurricane impact of the accelerative thrust. It is no longer resources that limit
decisions; it is the decision that makes the resources. Alvin Toffler is best known for the idea of future
shock. He defined future shock as one s personal view that there is too much change in too short a
period of time. Alvin Toffler identified three stages in the development of society: agrarian, industrial,
and postindustrial. The first stage is when humans invented agriculture. The second stage is when
England brought the inventions of machine tools and the steam engine during the Industrial
Revolution. The last stage began during the second half of the 20th century, while dealing with
inventions of mechanical industry, robotics, and the computer (Fretwell 2015). Alvin Toffler,
therefore, knows that the assessment of innovation is outstanding and moves at a faster pace than
people see. Innovation has brought out a great deal of information that has made, what is named, as
information over load. Alvin Toffler illustrated that development today is pushing progressively when

The Fight For Black Civil Rights
When any society says that I cannot marry a certain person, that society has cut off a segment of my
freedom. Martin Luther King Jr, 1958. This provocative statement, in reference to interracial
matrimony during the fight for black civil rights in America is unfortunately once again significant,
however this time in reference to marriage equality in Australia. The failure of the law to allow all
couples regardless of sex to marry, and furthermore refusal to acknowledge marriages conducted
overseas, is a disgrace to the nation supposedly know as accepting of difference and intolerant to
discrimination.
Among innumerable reasons why marriage equality should be legalized in Australia, a prominent one
is that restricting the option to marry any citizen is discriminatory and unconstitutional. This sort of
treatment not only deprives every day people of their dignity, creating a second class of citizens, but
also suggests that LGBTI+ people are somehow unworthy of participation in one of the fundamental
institutions of our society. A lack of opportunity to formalize same sex relations implies that these
relationships aren t of equal standard, exacerbating unjust prejudice and intolerance. This impression
is promoted through the lack of financial, medical and social rights associated with marriage to
individuals in a civil union, the supposed adequate equivalent for marriage. Although the legalisation
of marriage equality would have no impact on non LGBTI+ communities,

Analysis Of James Joyce s Dubliners Dubliners
Bria LeeAnn Coleman
ENG 299
Dr. Mark Facknitz
October 12, 2015
Epiphanies in James Joyce s Dubliners Characters in Dubliners experience revelations in their every
day lives which James Joyce called epiphanies. Merriam Webster defines an epiphany as an
illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. While word epiphany has a religious connotation,
these epiphanies characters in Dubliners experience do not bring new experiences and possibility of
reform that epiphanies usually have. Joyce s epiphanies allow characters to better understand their
circumstances, generally full of sadness and grief. After these revelations, characters go back to their
lives with acceptance but frustration. Dubliners fail to see their situation fully, which is the reason they
lacked reaching their full potential. Dubliners is full of characters in lethargic positions that Joyce saw
as the fate of all Dubliners. In each story, he gave each individual the possibility of an epiphany, but
often the characters failed to break through and see their ability to change their situations, because of
this, some of these epiphanies occur only on the narrative level, showing the reader that the story s
character missed their epiphany. In fact, in The Dead , the scene is set on/around January 6th, which is
the Feast of the Epiphany. The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ s divinity
to the Magi. The Dead is also Joyce s last chance to make clarity of an epiphany. Will this

On September 4, a tropical wave exited the west coast of Africa, and by 00:00 UTC the following day,
the system organized into Tropical Depression Eight between Cabo Verde and Senegal.[4][6] Soon
after, the depression moved through Cabo Verde, and it continued northwestward due to a passing mid
latitude trough. On September 8, the depression intensified into Tropical Storm Chloe, and it quickly

Interaction with Hurricane Doria to the west turned Chloe more toward the northwest on September

Character Analysis Of Sandra Bullock s The Blind Side
At the age of 45, Sandra Bullock won an Oscar award for the movie The Blind side in the year 2010.
Sandra plays the role of Leigh Anne Tuohy, her character s heart is pure of kindness as she took in
Michael Oher, who she knew from the start was full of potential. But due to his skin color, no one
thought to believe it. She plays a middle class, average american mom who believed in equality and
acceptance. As she had a family of her own, she never failed to leave Michael out of the picture. Her
character is very strong and independent, and in my opinion kind of stubborn but for a good cause. As
many doubted Michael, Leigh used the kindness of her heart to make sure Michael had a clear road to
success, since his own birth mom wasn t capable of doing it herself. This movie was based on a true
story which I find astonishing and inspiring. What filled me with anger though is just seeing how
people were discriminated, and how many did not stand up to be allies. But Leigh really opened up
that passage way to equality that most African American s never really experienced. She put out a
clear message that not all white people are cruel and racist. Fun fact: The real Leigh Anne Tuohy did
an interview talking about her experience and how it really encouraged many to stand up for what s
right, and even the little spontaneous moments can really impact someone s life, in a way you may not
understand.
It s mindboggling, the 54 year old mother of three says. We realize we do have a mission. We have the
opportunity to change lives. If that sounds narcissistic, screw it. Racism is alive and well in this
country; we have to learn how to love someone who doesn t look like us. (Tuohy, 2015) She speaks
with honesty and confidence, yet many still disagree with equality. Why hate on someone for the
stupidest excuses. Because of skin? Eyes? Hair? People can t help the way they look. But they can
help the way they are treated. If you don t like the way someone is being treated, be like Leigh Tuohy
and stand up. Stop sitting on your butts and speak up. Sandra Bullock was speaking to a reporter about
how taking on this role would become a challenge but she would take the risks. Leigh Anne is a one of

Public Sector Agencies are Best Equiped to Fight Social Injustice
With a new President, in came the rush of a new agenda. Gone were the days of the Clinton era, a time
of continued investment in big government programs and a commitment that the federal government
would assist in healing societal wounds. With President Bush in office, the social work community
knew it was in for big changes.
Armed with an agenda consistent with his conservative beliefs, President Bush came forth with
policies that attempted to downsize the federal role in social issues and social work, to return power to
the states in the form of block grants, and to increase reliance on the market as a solution to problems.
Like his father before him, Bush wanted a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After adopting the Elizabethan Poor Laws from England, the United States seemed to be on its way to
a private social welfare system. The Elizabethan Poor Laws created the distinction between worthy
and unworthy poor and sent those unworthy of help to privately owned and operated workhouses (or
poorhouses). The community and the family took primary responsibility for any needs a person might
have had. Throughout much of the 1700s and 1800s, the government did nothing to regulate or deliver
social services. A voluntary attitude toward societal problems soon developed (Zastrow, 1999).
The official development of the profession of social work is recognized by scholars to be connected to
the Charity Organization Society (COS) and the Settlement House Movements. Both started in the late
1800s. Jane Addams founded the first settlement house in 1889, and the Charity Organization Society
started in Britain in the 1850s. These two separate and different movements are credited with
developing the organization and delivery of social work (Karger Stoesz, 2001).
The Charity Organization Society, led in the United States by Mary Richmond, finds parallels in both
private sector social work and in the Conservative theory of today. The COS, for example, attributed
poverty to the moral failings of the poor, ignoring social and economic forces that shaped individual
behavior. Believers in private (voluntary)

The Social Gospel By John Lewis
The social gospel was the biggest inspiration and influence for Civil Rights leader, John Lewis. Which
is prevalent throughout the first two books, of the March trilogy, written by Andrew Aydin and John
Lewis himself. The Bible made its mark on Lewis when he was young farm boy. Leading him to the
social gospel which started him down the path of nonviolence, and longing not just for personal
reform but for social reform. As the Civil Rights movements became bigger, and as the philosophy of
which John Lewis taught spread, others were inspired by the social gospel. At a very young age John
Lewis love for the gospel was born. At the age of four his uncle gifted him his first Bible for
Christmas. Even though he was too young to read it for himself; the words that his mother read to him,
had a strong impact. He said, I ll never forget my mother reading aloud to me the first words in that
book In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth (Lewis and Aydin March Book one 26).
By age five he could read the Bible himself, and the messages began to shape, and impact him even
more. John Lewis then wanted to be a preacher, so he began preaching to the chickens on his farm,
with soulful messages. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. [...] Blessed are the
merciful: for they shall obtain mercy (Lewis and Aydin March Book one 27). Little did he know, that
what he preached to the chickens were molding his future. Those words are what he was going to
stand for, his morals. What he was going to be known for, what will become his determination, and
will drive him for years to come. There was one verse in particular that did stand out to Lewis, John
1:29: Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (KJV). In this verse the lamb of
God is referring to Jesus, whom sacrifices himself to take away the sin of every person and save every
person. There is a strong connection between John Lewis and Jesus Christ. Foreshadowing, that John
Lewis believes his purpose is to liberate the lives of African Americans. The idea of the social gospel
was introduced to John Lewis for the first time when he heard Martin Luther King Jr. give a sermon
over the radio. Lewis stated: Dr. King s

Organizational Effect on Employee Psychology
Organizational Effect on Employee Psychology Organizations are defined as a social group of
individuals who come together to achieve a common goal or particular purpose. The success of an
organization starts with a solid foundation to build upon. The foundation starts with a vision, followed
by a clear and concise mission statement and supported by a great employee base that executes the
plans. When we magnify the layers of a successful organization, it usually reveals great leadership and
the loyal employees who follow them. Understanding the importance of great leadership and the value
of a high performing staff is critical to any organizations success. The relationship between the

I will discuss the key factors that are leading to the challenges this organization is facing today.
Furthermore, I will propose a plan to address the root cause of the problems the organization is having
with its employees, and show why these few simple changes will have such a positive impact on the
overall morale of the organization.
The Organizational Challenge Few organizations can say they have been around for over 100 years,
let alone 125 years. More remarkable, few can say that they have steadily increased revenue and
market share during this entire stretch of time. This organization can proudly state this fact, and is a
well known retail beast that has sold everything from clothing to cars, and hats to homes. This
organization has been nationally recognized over the past 100 years for excellence in retail and
revolutionizing shopping, as we know it including having the famous catalogue for shoppers to
browse in the privacy of their own homes long before the internet was even a thought in some
technology moguls mind. Organizations like this are bound to have I O psychology related issues, and
this was certainly the case when I worked for them from 2011 to 2013. I was a General Manager (GM)

departments. Shortly before I started, the organization completed a national employee

You need to go through these small notes a few days or even few hours before and/or the Mains exam.
So it would not be exaggeration to say that the notes you prepare can decide your future in the exam.
The first step is to maintain book, a dedicated register or even take down notes on flip cards or pages

Flat Management And Transparency Worked For Them Essay
This post is inpsired by a post I found recently on inc.com
I found this title to be very intriguing. So much so that I decided to do some research as to why Flat
management and transparency worked for them.
So Here is why!
Introduction
Flat management is an organizational structure which eliminates intermediate executive levels and
their functions. In this, the top most level of management is in directly intertwined with frontline
customers, employees on the floor and salespeople. Undeterred by their breath, flat management can
be benefited from various advantages for the customer like faster response times and also other
customer preferences.
From increased productivity to faster decision making, here are 5 compelling reasons as to why flat or
horizontal management could work for your company.
1. Focus on core Products:
With a flat management system there is more time to listen to your customers and their reviews on the
products. Thus giving you the feedback you need to refine your the product. With a Flat structure you
don t have to deal with the nitty gritties of Human Resources or any issues related to it. Departmental
meetings are also not required. Staff meetings, however, should be conducted at least once every week
so that you can have a clear status about the state of the business. In this meeting you get a good
opportunity to discuss on ideas and techniques offering customer service suggestions, content, new
product features etc.
It has been found that flat

1.In your opinion, what are three main topics of chapter one? How do you know if you have a good

In my view the three main topics of chapter one are How do you build a Foundation for execution,
How does a Foundation for execution create Business value and Do you have a good foundation for
execution.
Foundation of Execution basically implies the mechanization of routine business tasks. Doing this
permits individuals to focus on enhancing the business as opposed to simply absolutely running it.
According to Ross, Weill, and Robertson, the three keys to building a strong foundation are Operating
model, Enterprise architecture and IT engagement model. I can say that a company has a good
foundation if it experiences higher profitability, faster time to market, and lower IT costs. In any case,
those aren t the main reasons you would need to construct an strong foundation for execution.
Moreover, developing complexity in an company s system can make inflexibility in the systems, and
excessive costs, without included quality. Likewise, business agility relies on upon an strong
foundation for execution. More agile companies have their center procedures digitized. ... Show more

degrees of success. The aim is to amend and align existing models to the critical success factors and in

inside of their homes or in the trunk of their cars. Although Californians can certainly defend
themselves at home, self defense becomes much more problematic when they leave their private

Although the opponents of open carry are armed with rational concerns, they need not worry about it
in the state of California as open carry is prohibited there. California is also one of the most restrictive
states when it comes to gun control, yet according to the FBI s uniformed crime report, California led
the nation with 151,879 violent crimes (murder and non negligent manslaughter, rape, robbery, and
aggravated assault) in 2013. In the state with the highest amount of violent crime, self defense at home
and in public is a necessity, but that necessity is compromised by the prohibition of open carry. The
belief that criminals can easily remove a firearm from an individual exercising open carry is absurd
considering modern holsters are now designed with retention in mind. Logically, criminals would
avoid attacking someone who is exercising open carry due to the likelihood of being killed in an
altercation or being forced to kill the individual and face capital punishment. Although people
exercising open carry can cause panic from the community and police officers, the issue is generally
resolved without complications and programs to raise awareness on gun rights would improve
relations. Raising public awareness about open carry would benefit both open carry and the public due

own actions and the consequences that occur as a result of those actions. In The Crucible, John Proctor
is more responsible for his own death than Elizabeth Proctor or Mary Warren. John Proctor is mainly
responsible for his own death. He had an affair with Abigail Williams, which led to her becoming

only minorities are the ones who work them. Another negative portrayal of Mexicans displayed by the

well, many students shared their opinion, and for the most part, the subjects of the discussion
intermingled. It was good to hear that many students shared some of the same thoughts. I think that
this made the discussion interesting because they felt comfortable sharing their opinion and thoughts
about the book. I really enjoyed leading discussion because I was forced to share my opinion and

Reliability And Validity Essay
Establishing Reliability and Validity In conducting a research or survey, the quality of the data
collected in the research is of utmost importance. One s assessment may be reliable and not valid and
thus this is why it is important that when designing a survey, one should also come up with the
methods of testing the reliability and validity of the assessment tools. For MADD (Mothers Against
Drunk Driving) to conduct a survey, the questions they propose to use must pass the validity and
reliability test for one to conclude that the survey is reliable and valid. This survey will try to find out
the risk factors that contribute to drunken driving by teenagers or young adults. Reliability can be
defined as the statistical measurement of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the other hand, the types of validity include content validity, criterion validity and construct
validity (Litwin, 1995). The assessment of these forms of reliability and validity determines the
quality of the data that our tools will collect and hence affects how reliable and valid the research will
be. When using multiple indicators, the test retest is the most common and easiest. This is usually
done by administering survey questions to the same respondents at different times so as to see how
consistent their responses are (Litwin, 1995, p. 8). This process measures how reproducible the results
are. When the two sets of responses from the same respondent are compared, their correlation is
referred to as intraobserver reliability. This measures the stability of the responses from the same
respondent as a form of the test retest reliability. The alternate form or alternative method is almost
similar to the test retest method but differs on the second testing, where instead of giving the same test
an alternative form of the test is given to the same respondents (Carmines Zeller, 1979, p. 40).
However, the two tests should be equivalent in that they should be designed to measure the same
thing. The correlation between the results of the two forms is the interobserver test, which gives an
estimate of the reliability. The split halves test involves splitting the survey sample

to deal with domestic, industrial and agricultural contaminations and pollutants mainly considering
solids of organic nature. The main focus on this design will be organic compounds in the domestic
waste water BOD (Biochemical Oxygen Demand) and TSS (Total Suspended Solids). Based on the
Royal Commission for UK and Ireland the concentrations of effluents to be disposed on receiving
water are 20mg/L for BOD5 and 30mg/L for TSS as theses parameters apparently would not cause any
harm and will not be favourable for other process such as eutrophication. Considering that
Severodvinsk is situated close to the Dvina River and White Sea these concentrations does not need to
be highly restricted once that there is plenty of water available for further dilutions. Is important to
have in mind that low parameters involves high investments in processes and equipments. Before start
designing the processes itself is essential to understand the flows and concentrations of BOD5 and
TSS that are running into the units. Some

(James Mennen, 2001). Abused children describe trauma pain as overwhelming feelings of anxiety,

chair and began to explain to me his primary focus, responsibilities, and the life style of an
optometrist. To conclude our conversation, he cheerfully allowed me to shadow him along with the
other optometrist. While observing Dr. Handy, I notice how he leads his team by maintaining a
professional persona, properly communicating with patients, and expressing strong analytical thinking
skills. These superior skills contribute to the success of his private practice and inspire me to pursue a
rewarding career in optometry. Through previous experience, I have learned in order to achieve a goal

  • 2. Lead Poisoning In Prenatal Development The prenatal affects of lead poisoning greatly influence the child s early life from mental disorders to poor health. According to one of my sources, high Blood Lead Levels (BLLs) around 350 micro grams in infants during pregnancy can result in various birth defects such as reduced gestational age, weight at birth, and facial deformities. As well as other various mental affects ranging from, anaemia, impaired visual and motor functions, hearing loss, mild mental developmental delay, attention spans, and reading and learning disabilities (Ronchetti, Van Den Hazel, Schoeters, Hanke, Rennezova, Barreto, Villa, M. Since there is no known alternative source for the increased lead exposure during this time period, the innate corrosive properties of the Flint River water, and lack of corrosion control, strongly suggest the change in water source as the apparent cause of the increase in EBLL percentage. Children in Flint Michigan already suffer from risk factors that increase their lead exposure such as poor nutrition, and poverty. Due to limited means of protection such as scarce resources for alternatives to water, lead in water in addition exacerbates the preexisting risk factors. Increased levels of lead poisoning rates have significant meaning for the development of an entire generation of Flint children, already inflicted with teratogen stress contributors (Hanna Attisha, LaChance, Casey Sadler, Champney Schnepp ... • 3. Class Reflection Essay I went to Ning s informational speech section. The classroom is located room 209 at Williams Building (WMS). It took me a while to find this building because I seldom go to the area around Westcott Fountain. Williams is large compound building that served as lecture halls and classrooms for undergraduate s general education courses. Room 209 is where the public speech class took place. It is a middle size classroom in the corner and next to a lounge area. I saw some of the students rehearsal their informative speech at the lounge when I arrived early and wait for Ning to come. Ning s class has 15 students with varying major background. On the day I visited, most of the students came to class on time. Three students arrived about 5 minutes late, and Ning said she would mark them as late. Ning told me that too many late marks would negatively affect the student s participation final grade. I learned a lot of teaching skills from Ning, such as how to start the class lively, how to organize student s speech and how to claim down students when facing unpredicted things. Ning started her class by showing a video clip of humorous talk show. I think it is an effective way to reduce student s pre performance anxiety. She then overviewed what the class was going to do and gave updates on class assignments. Then, Ning asked volunteer students give the first speech. Others could just step to the front if they felt like they are ready to go. I think this is the best way to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. A Note on the Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster: The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster is an accident that took place at a nuclear power plant in Ukraine in April 1986. The accident was because of a flawed Soviet reactor design, severe mistakes by the plant operators, and direct result of Cold War isolation. As the resultant steam explosion and fires emitted radioactive reactor core into the downwind and the Earth s atmosphere, the accident was also attributed to the lack of any safety culture. The Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster was a unique event because it s the only accident in commercial nuclear power history in which radiation related losses took place. Nonetheless, the design of the reactor is exceptional and the disaster of minimal relevance to other elements of the nuclear industry. Background on the Disaster: The Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant consisted of four nuclear reactors with each of them capable of producing 1 gigawatt of electric power. During the time when the disaster took place, these four reactors were producing approximately 10 percent of the electricity used in Ukraine. The construction of this power plant started in the 1970s with the first reactor commissioned in 1977 and the fourth in 1983. At the time when the disaster happened, the other two nuclear reactors were still under construction (West par, 4). In April 1986, the operating crew planned to evaluate whether the turbines of the fourth reactor could produce adequate energy to maintain the running of the coolant ... • 8. Fellowship Of The Ring Movie And Book Comparison Essay The Fellowship of the Ring Book/Movie Comparison Written by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring was released in 1954; it is the first book in the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The plot centers around a young hobbit, Frodo Baggins, who must embark on a treacherous journey to destroy the One Ring. He is accompanied by Sam, Merry, and Pippin. Some of the other key characters include Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Boromir, and Gimli. A movie adaptation was released in 2001. Although it is tremendously rare, in this case, the movie adaptation more efficiently tells the story than the book. The book commences with Bilbo Baggins one hundred and eleventh birthday celebration (Tolkien 21 30). At the end of his party, Bilbo announces that he is going to depart. Suddenly, he mysteriously vanishes, and the crowd is astounded (Tolkien 30). Bilbo quickly runs to his home, grabs his belongings, and walks out the door, vowing never to return. However, right before he departs, he is briefly visited by Gandalf the wizard. Gandalf encourages him to leave behind a ring (Tolkien 33 34). All of this time spent wandering is not important to the story and can quite quickly make the reader lose interest or become bored. While it is necessary to show Frodo traveling, it is not necessary to have seventy five pages dedicated to traveling through the woods. In the movie, the time spent traveling through the woods is very brief (Jackson). This helps the viewer stay engaged in the story. • 9. Persuasive Essay On The Problems Of A Teacher Many students and teachers in Seneca share the same goal: to make sure grades are high. For grades to stay up, it s important that teachers make sure their students do well in class especially on the tests. This may not seem like a problem, but it is. Students are incapable of learning to the best of their abilities because of teachers tendencies to focus specifically on testing. In my high school career so far, I have experienced many occasions in which this thought process has been apparent. For me, science labs have been the most prevalent for this method of teaching. Science has always been a class that I would receive good grades in, but looking back, it wasn t for the right reasons. My high grades in a class like Biology didn t come from insight on how the cell works and how all the organelles work together like a city; they came from weeks of drilling facts and information into my brain so I could regurgitate them onto a piece of paper that meant more to me only because it was called a test or quiz. I end up getting an A on the test which supposedly shows that my teacher did a good job teaching. It seems like a win win situation for both parties, but in reality, this way of teaching is problematic. The issue with teaching to the test is it impedes students from truly understanding the content. Instead of having students go deep into a topic and fully comprehending it from several angles, some teachers will choose a question and only consider one way to solve it. ... He was only kind if people forcibly accepted him as their leader, thought too highly of himself and killed many people in his quest to conquer land. Furthermore, he didn t stop at his already expanded empire when King Darius died, but continued to push his soldiers through battles for his empire. He did this to his soldiers for so long, they turned on Alexander and refused to go any farther. (BGE). In other words, Alexander thought he should be considered a god, have many cities arrogantly named after him, and try to expand his empire to the point in which his own army would no longer fight for him. These are not good leadership skills to have if others are looking up to you. A final reason why Alexander was not great is that he killed many people in his conquesting of land. • 17. Symbolism In William Jennings Bryan s The Wonderful... During the late 1800 s, a pervasive sense of melancholy permeated throughout the forgotten, dreary Midwestern United States. While the industrial revolution boosted the economy on the coasts, Midwestern farmers were victims of deflationary debt increases, exorbitant shipping and railroad rates, a high protective tariff, and a government that for the most part ignored them.1 Desperate circumstances moved the everyday American farmers to join together and voice their grievances. Instead of seeking federal aid or economic relief, they attempted to use the power of the ballot to achieve their goals.1 The united group of farmers used the Populist Party as a springboard to launch their complaints and eventually got their candidate, William Jennings Bryan, nominated for the presidential election of 1896 by the Democratic Party. Among innumerable reasons why marriage equality should be legalized in Australia, a prominent one is that restricting the option to marry any citizen is discriminatory and unconstitutional. Analysis Of James Joyce s Dubliners Dubliners Bria LeeAnn Coleman ENG 299 Dr. Mark Facknitz October 12, 2015 Epiphanies in James Joyce s Dubliners Characters in Dubliners experience revelations in their every day lives which James Joyce called epiphanies. Merriam Webster defines an epiphany as an illuminating discovery, realization, or disclosure. While word epiphany has a religious connotation, these epiphanies characters in Dubliners experience do not bring new experiences and possibility of reform that epiphanies usually have. Joyce s epiphanies allow characters to better understand their circumstances, generally full of sadness and grief. After these revelations, characters go back to their lives with acceptance but frustration. Dubliners fail to see their situation fully, which is the reason they lacked reaching their full potential. Dubliners is full of characters in lethargic positions that Joyce saw as the fate of all Dubliners. In each story, he gave each individual the possibility of an epiphany, but often the characters failed to break through and see their ability to change their situations, because of this, some of these epiphanies occur only on the narrative level, showing the reader that the story s character missed their epiphany. In fact, in The Dead , the scene is set on/around January 6th, which is the Feast of the Epiphany. The Feast of the Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ s divinity to the Magi. As many doubted Michael, Leigh used the kindness of her heart to make sure Michael had a clear road to success, since his own birth mom wasn t capable of doing it herself. This movie was based on a true story which I find astonishing and inspiring. What filled me with anger though is just seeing how people were discriminated, and how many did not stand up to be allies. But Leigh really opened up that passage way to equality that most African American s never really experienced. She put out a clear message that not all white people are cruel and racist. Fun fact: The real Leigh Anne Tuohy did an interview talking about her experience and how it really encouraged many to stand up for what s right, and even the little spontaneous moments can really impact someone s life, in a way you may not understand. The Elizabethan Poor Laws created the distinction between worthy and unworthy poor and sent those unworthy of help to privately owned and operated workhouses (or poorhouses). The community and the family took primary responsibility for any needs a person might have had. Throughout much of the 1700s and 1800s, the government did nothing to regulate or deliver social services. A voluntary attitude toward societal problems soon developed (Zastrow, 1999). The official development of the profession of social work is recognized by scholars to be connected to the Charity Organization Society (COS) and the Settlement House Movements. Both started in the late 1800s. Jane Addams founded the first settlement house in 1889, and the Charity Organization Society started in Britain in the 1850s. These two separate and different movements are credited with developing the organization and delivery of social work (Karger Stoesz, 2001). The Charity Organization Society, led in the United States by Mary Richmond, finds parallels in both private sector social work and in the Conservative theory of today. The COS, for example, attributed poverty to the moral failings of the poor, ignoring social and economic forces that shaped individual behavior. Believers in private (voluntary) ... • 29. The Social Gospel By John Lewis The social gospel was the biggest inspiration and influence for Civil Rights leader, John Lewis. Which is prevalent throughout the first two books, of the March trilogy, written by Andrew Aydin and John Lewis himself. The Bible made its mark on Lewis when he was young farm boy. Leading him to the social gospel which started him down the path of nonviolence, and longing not just for personal reform but for social reform. As the Civil Rights movements became bigger, and as the philosophy of which John Lewis taught spread, others were inspired by the social gospel. At a very young age John Lewis love for the gospel was born. At the age of four his uncle gifted him his first Bible for Christmas. Even though he was too young to read it for himself; the words that his mother read to him, had a strong impact. He said, I ll never forget my mother reading aloud to me the first words in that book In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth (Lewis and Aydin March Book one 26). By age five he could read the Bible himself, and the messages began to shape, and impact him even more. John Lewis then wanted to be a preacher, so he began preaching to the chickens on his farm, with soulful messages. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. [...] Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy (Lewis and Aydin March Book one 27). Little did he know, that what he preached to the chickens were molding his future. Those words are what he was going to stand for, his morals. What he was going to be known for, what will become his determination, and will drive him for years to come. There was one verse in particular that did stand out to Lewis, John 1:29: Behold the lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (KJV). In this verse the lamb of God is referring to Jesus, whom sacrifices himself to take away the sin of every person and save every person. There is a strong connection between John Lewis and Jesus Christ. Foreshadowing, that John Lewis believes his purpose is to liberate the lives of African Americans. The idea of the social gospel was introduced to John Lewis for the first time when he heard Martin Luther King Jr. give a sermon over the radio. Lewis stated: Dr. King s ... In the state with the highest amount of violent crime, self defense at home and in public is a necessity, but that necessity is compromised by the prohibition of open carry. The belief that criminals can easily remove a firearm from an individual exercising open carry is absurd considering modern holsters are now designed with retention in mind. Logically, criminals would avoid attacking someone who is exercising open carry due to the likelihood of being killed in an altercation or being forced to kill the individual and face capital punishment. It was good to hear that many students shared some of the same thoughts. One s assessment may be reliable and not valid and thus this is why it is important that when designing a survey, one should also come up with the methods of testing the reliability and validity of the assessment tools. For MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) to conduct a survey, the questions they propose to use must pass the validity and reliability test for one to conclude that the survey is reliable and valid. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the other hand, the types of validity include content validity, criterion validity and construct validity (Litwin, 1995). The assessment of these forms of reliability and validity determines the quality of the data that our tools will collect and hence affects how reliable and valid the research will be. When using multiple indicators, the test retest is the most common and easiest. This is usually done by administering survey questions to the same respondents at different times so as to see how consistent their responses are (Litwin, 1995, p. 8). This process measures how reproducible the results are. When the two sets of responses from the same respondent are compared, their correlation is referred to as intraobserver reliability. This measures the stability of the responses from the same respondent as a form of the test retest reliability. The alternate form or alternative method is almost similar to the test retest method but differs on the second testing, where instead of giving the same test an alternative form of the test is given to the same respondents (Carmines Zeller, 1979, p. 40). However, the two tests should be equivalent in that they should be designed to measure the same thing. The correlation between the results of the two forms is the interobserver test, which gives an estimate of the reliability. The split halves test involves splitting the survey sample ...
