The Importance of Class in American Discourse, and the...
Americans avoid broaching the subject of class in America, notes Mantsios (2006). To support
his claim, Mantsios (2006) states that most poor people in the United States identify first with
their racial heritage, ethnic heritage, or geographic location. Members of the working class do
not consider themselves part of a collective of workers, but rather as employees of a specific
company. References to a middle class are, according to Mantsios (2006), usually done by
politicians to pander to the broadest possible constituency, (p. 183). When relative wealth or
poverty is addressed in the mainstream media, it is done so without reference to the structural
issues that cause income disparity. Mantsios (2006) proceeds to outline several myths, including
the overarching myth that America is a classless society (p. 183). The second of his four main
myths related to class in America is that Despite some variations in economic status, most
Americans have achieved relative affluence in what is widely recognized as a consumer society,
(p. 184). Certainly, to a villager in Zimbabwe a poor American might seem to have relative
affluence. Yet within the broader scheme of American society, it seems insulting to claim validity to
this myth. Mantsios (2006) offers some hypothetical case studies to highlight the importance of
class in American discourse, and the falsehood of the myth of universal affluence. Bob Farrell s
ambition as a child was to become President. This

Research On The Methods Of Surveying
Surveys and Happiness: A study on the different techniques used to persuade individuals to
participate in survey taking
By: Zachary Bernal
University of Kansas
Abstract
Many studies have been done regarding researchers abilities to obtain information from individuals
from various methods of surveying. Drawing on the social psychological factors of persuasion and
compliance, studies have shown that if individuals receive something from the researcher (e.g.
money, conversation, advice) they are much more likely to agree to participate in the survey due
to the norms of reciprocity (Groves et al., 1992). Another key factor in determining people s
compliance with a request draws on the ideas that individuals in a ... Show more content on

Over the years I started to wonder what the most effective way was to address new customers.
Sometimes I would approach them and before I say a word they already dismiss me with an, I m
good, thanks. Making it quite clear they don t want my help or anything I m selling. So I started
to ask myself what leads to the most customer involvement and willingness to be sold to? I
finally began to notice that if the customer was simply asked how their day was going, or first
primed with casual conversation before asking if they needed any help on the sales floor, they
were much more likely to request my help or ask a question. These interactions between customers
lead to broader implications of persuasion and compliance. Compliance is defined as, Responding
favorably to an explicit request by another person. (Gilovich, et al., 2013). Persuasion is defined
as, The action of influencing someone or of being influenced to do or believe something. (Gillath,
2014). These mechanisms of persuasion and compliance could carry larger implications outside of
the retail setting. It seems as though people are much more likely to be compliant to a request and
succumb to persuasion if they are in a better mood. Therefore, if salespeople, telemarketers,
charities, and other institutions were to add a more personal experience to their target they will
increase the likelihood of that individual to be persuaded or

Three Laws Of Robot Essay
The Effectiveness of Isaac Asimov`s Three Laws of Robotics
In 1950 a collection of short stories by Isaac Asimov gathered under a name I, Robot was first
published commencing a whole new era in the field of fiction. Asimov first explicitly introduced
the Three Laws of Robotics in the short story Runaround, published in the March 1942 issue of
Astounding Science Fiction. In his 1985 novel Robots and Empire, Asimov formulated an
additional Zeroth Law, to stand above the original three: No harm to humanity, or, allowing any
harm to humanity by inaction. Other science fiction writers have explored similar ideas, sometimes
anticipating Asimov s laws and sometimes expanding on them. (Wallach 219) It was the first book
to use the word robot ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Indeed, a robot should have some system of self preservation reflexes as long as they do not
interfere with its prime responsibilities. But, as mentioned before, robots can under certain
circumstances interpret the Laws differently and what is more important can be seen as a better
version of a human being. Asimov (3) wrote through the words of Susan Calvin: Then you don t
remember a world without robots. There was a time when humanity faced the universe alone and
without a friend. Now he has creatures to help him; stronger creatures than himself, more
faithful, more useful, and absolutely devoted to him. Mankind is no longer alone. Have you ever
thought of it that way? ... They re a cleaner, better breed than we are. In this sense robots deserve
to be considered as equals to humans and even more than that, as superior beings. Robots that
serve are just a first step on the way to developing artificial intelligence opening new possibilities
to no end. However, Asimov`s Three Laws do not go beyond the definition of robots as slaves,
which, considering human history, is immoral and

Key Themes Of Political Power In Machiavelli s Richard II
Political power does not come from an army, or a full treasury. Instead, it comes from the
subjects, or the people. If the people like a ruler, or leader, it gives them power to act, largely,
however they please, but, if the ruler is not well liked, not only does the ruler lose the ability to
act, even within the law, but they are much more likely to lose their throne. Throughout Richard
II political staging is a means to obtain power, both successfully, and unsuccessfully. In doing so,
it reveals the identity of the characters and how they view the world and their place in it. It also
demonstrates the problem that power presents, and how it can be hard to wear a political mask,
and retain something that is fundamentally individual. In Machiavelli s The Prince, he outlines
and ideal ruler, and how they would act, and the best ways to seize power. One of the key
themes that underlies this work, is that power comes from the people, not divine right, or
inheritance. This question of where power comes from, is also present in Richard II, and it
plays out both literally and intellectually within the play. Power from the people, plays out
literally in the play, when Henry, works to win people over, so that he can overthrow Richard.
Later on in the play, Richard realizes that power comes from the people and not from divine right,
and realizes that he has screwed up, and lost the bit of power that he did have. Machiavelli also
discusses the importance of appearances. For example,

Media And The Vietnam War Essay
[Add thesis] The Vietnam War was the first war to be televised and as a result all government
restrictions were obliterated. During the first world war boundaries were set making sure that no
graphic imagery was released, but by the time the Vietnam war ended the world would have a new
cache of violent and bloody combat photography in their living rooms. In 1965, at the beginning of
the US s involvement in the VietnamWar no one paid it much mind, including the media. But as
soon as reporters began to take interest restrictions came down, not unlike any other war the U.S
has participated in. Barry Zorthian, with his experience with the media, got thing done pretty
well. In almost all the nightly news programs of major television networks, such as CBS and
NBC, the war was labeled as a good guys shooting Reds story. () But, as soon as the media

Ancient Mariner Innocence
I.
Innocence vs. Experience
a.
The poem The Rime of Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is about the ancient mariner
narratives his experience of being saved from a ship without wind or sails to the wedding guests. In
this poem, the idea of innocence and experienced is demonstrated:
God save thee, ancient Mariner!
From the fiends, that plague thee thus!
Why look st thou so? With my cross bow
I shot the ALBATROSS(line 79 82).
The mariners have nothing but the ALBATROSS plays with them on the ship. I believe the
ALBATROSS is the symbol of innocence and nature; this is the reason why the author capitalized
this word. The ALBATROSS remained above the ship for days and the weather becomes misty,
which is abnormal; consequently, the ancient mariner shoots it because he believed there might be

I have lost
Beauties and feelings, such as would have been
Most sweet to my remembrance even when age
Had dimm d mine eyes to blindness! They, meanwhile,
Friends, whom I never more may meet again,
On springy heath, along the hill top edge,
Wander in gladness, and wind down, perchance,
To that still roaring dell, of which I told (lines 1 9);
This poem reveals the theme of solitude as the symbol of romanticism. He is in solitude in his
prison without beauties, feeling, and friends. I can see the lonesome and sadness mood in this
poem. He even imagines he friends are having fun outside, which contrast to his lonely sense.

Radiographic Stereotypes
Radiolucent lesions seen on radiographs develop from both odontogenic and non odontogenic
structures. They characterize a broad spectrum of lesions (Avril et al., 2013) A sequential study of
all the radiographic characteristics of the image helps ensure recognition and collection of all the
information contained in the image and in turn improves the accuracy of interpretation. Analysis of
any image should include: Step 1: Localize the anomaly Step 2: Assess the periphery and shape
Step 3: Analyse the internal structure Step 4: Analyse the effects of the lesion on peripheral
structures. A radiolucent lesion in the mandibular premolar region can have the following
differential diagnosis; 1.Mental foramen: It is typically the anterior limit of the Inferior Alveolar
Nerve. Due to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

defined or diffused, may have cortical expansion in chronic situations. Associated tooth will
have extensive caries or restoration involving or in close proximity to pulp space. Will have
associated widening of the Periodontal Ligament Space. Pulp vitality tests are needed to
confirm diagnosis. 4.Periapical granuloma: Well circumscribed, rounded (around apex). May
have a thin radio opaque border, tooth involved will most likely have deep carious lesion or
restoration in close proximity to pulp space. Tooth will be non vital. 5.Periapical cyst: Similar to
a granuloma, the differentiation may not be possible unless other distinctiveness of a cyst, such
as displacement of contiguous structures and expansion of the external cortical boundaries of the
jaw, are seen. Lesions larger than 1 cm in diameter usually are radicular cysts. Other periapical
radiolucencies to consider are an early stage of Periapical cemental dysplasia and an apical scar or
a surgical defect because in such cases, normal bone may never fill in the defect completely. The

My Experience With Multiple Sclerosis
In my everyday world I don t think twice about how I am going to get through the day. Waking
up, getting dressed, and getting to school or work are very routine for me. I have been living life
without thinking about how those with disabilities get through their day. What struggles they
might see that I over look, such as brushing their teeth or eating a meal. So given the opportunity
to experience just how these individual s daily activities are with a neurological disorder helped
me see just how lucky I am. I have always been interested in the neurological aspect of therapy,
and so I decided to experience what it would be like to be someone with multiple sclerosis, or MS. I
have never been around anyone who has multiple sclerosis, so this was all new to me. Before I
could even begin to recreate multiple sclerosis I had to do some research on what it was. I found
that multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that disturbs the nervous system.1 Those who
have this disease have destroyed myelin sheaths, causing the brain to improperly send signals
throughout the body. Multiple sclerosis symptomscan come and go due to triggers such as
infections, known as relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. While some people may have... Show

Neruda Poetry Analysis
Reflective Statement Neruda Poetry
Throughout the interactive oral, we discussed Neruda s beliefs and how they influenced his poetry.
Moreover, we discussed how these things not only influenced his writing style, but also his life.
Previously, I thought that I could not relate to Neruda because his beliefs differed very much from
mine. These beliefs clashed because Neruda is from a Latin American country that is communist,
and he is also a communist; while someone like me lives in the United States which is a democracy.
Following this, Neruda s work was easier to relate to than I had originally thought because he talks
about the Latin American struggle and gave his people a voice in poems such as United Fruit co.
when he names the American companies that took advantage of Chile and other Latin American
countries. In the IOQ, we as a class think communists are bad because of the way they are
displayed in the United States, but the IOQ helped me understand that Neruda was more than a
communist. Neruda was a person who used his platform, and took risks writing controversial
poems about the struggle of his people to give them a voice, and politics to expose the
corruptness of those leaders because they were not only taking advantage of their people but also
giving communism a negative connotation. Adding on, Neruda was a strong advocate for
communism which influenced his writing also even though he wrote about other communist
leaders such as Martinez and Trujillo, his love for communism was shown when he wrote the
ode to Fidel Castro. Neruda admires Castro because in his eves Fidel Castro does communism
the right way unlike Martinez and Trujillo who took advantage of their countries resources and
people. The way Neruda portrays Fidel Castro contradicts the way America portrays him because
Castro is characterized as a person who killed anyone that got in the way of his vision of a perfect
Cuba, While Neruda characterizes him as hero of communism because he did not corrupt his
people by letting American companies take over Cuba and take advantage of the people of Cuba.
Overall, the IOQ enhanced my appreciation and understanding of Neruda s work, some of Neruda
s work was controversial, yet people could still relate

How Does Marjane Satrapi Use Animation In Persepolis
In the animation Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi uses color in the beginning of the animation
during her present day life and black and white for flashbacks or her past life. The majority of
the animation is the story of Marjane s life in the past so it is in mostly black and white. This is
an interesting way of using color because in a way color is used as a form of timeline, there are
parts of the animation that switch from present to past, so Satrapi just switches from black and
white to color to show time period. I find this concept very appealing and creative. are the growing
tensions of the political climate in Iranin the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal leaning

Marjane grew up in Iran during the Iran/Iraq war in the 1970s which creates a layer of
complication in her life due to living in a war zone. As a child there was protest going on against
the Shah that was in power at that time. Marjane as a child is a very lively child that is
frustrated by the current events being war and violence. By taking us through her life starting the
flashback at childhood then though teen years we are able to learn about a personal experience
on being an Iranian woman during this time. I did not know that women in Iran during the post
war periods were treated so poorly by men in authority, I also did not know that alcohol was a
forbidden beverage. I learned a lot through this animation by understanding what Marjane went
through in her life. The content of Marjane s life as a teenager was very entertaining to watch.
Marjane went from being so restrained in Iran to smoking pot at punk concerts in Europe. When an
animator is honest in their work it is appealing and easy to watch; which is how I felt about this
animation. Satrapi did not hold back in language, emotion, and details throughout the story of this

Advantages And Disadvantages Of An Analog Signal
An analog signal is a continuous signal in which the time varying signal is a representation of some
other time varying quantity i.e. in an audio signal, the instantaneous voltage of the signal varies
with the pressure of the sound waves
Analog signal processing is a type of signal processing conducted on which continuous analog
signals by some analog means
The difference between the analog and digital signal processing is that analog signal has continuous
values unlike the digital which has discrete values. Now a days, signal processing plays an important
role in many of applications. The mostly used physical quantities which represent analog quantities
are current, voltage or charge. These quantities are affected by certain external forces ... Show more

As the signal is transmitted over long distances, the noise become dominant. The effects of noise
create signal loss and variation. It is not possible to recover.
Distortion in Analog Signal Defined to be the change of shape in signal sent from the source to the
destination which is due to the addition of noise in our required signal.
Thermal Noise Noise due to random motion of electrons cause thermal noise. Due to this noise
signal s shape distorted.
Attenuation is loss of energy in the signal as it is transmitted from the one point to other point.
This occurs in case the signal has to be sent over a long distance. To remove this effect we use
amplifiers which amplify the signal. But there is a problem that when we amplify the given signal
the noise also gets amplified.
Digital signal processing is the numerical manipulation of signals, usually with the measure, filter,
produce in continuous analog signals. It is characterized by the use of digital signal to represent
these signals as discrete time and frequency, or other discrete domain signals in the form of a
sequence of numbers to permit the digital processing of these

Children Vaccinated Against Common Illnesses
In recent years vaccines have been a major topic of discussion. While some people still think
having your children vaccinated against common illnesses such as chicken pox and the flu is
dangerous, I myself think it is perfectly fine to have your children vaccinated on the schedule
recommended by pediatricians. Some parents choose to have their children vaccinated on a
delayed schedule, which I still find acceptable. However, the parents who choose not to have their
children vaccinated at all are a danger to the public.
Unvaccinated people can cause outbreaks of viruses that have been eradicated. In late 2014 a
measles outbreak occurred when an unvaccinated child who was a carrier of the disease visited
Disneyland. This caused 173 people from seventeen different states to contract the virus that was
eradicated from the United States in 2002. In order for measles to be under control 94 99% of the
population must be vaccinated. With the recent trend of not vaccinating, measles, along with other
once eradicated, or nearly eradicated diseases are making a come back.
Since early 1998 autism and the MMR vaccine, a vaccine that protects the body from measles,
mumps, and rubella viruses, has said to been linked. In an article written by Jeffery S. Gerber and

link. According to Gerber and Offit:

From looking at the graph, there have been fluctuations in the share price from the 24th
September 2014 till 5th November 2014. For a week from the 8th October 2014, the share
prices have dropped. This could have been due to a decrease in revenue. As a result, this may
have led to investors falling out with Cineworld and therefore, people may not have wanted to
invest in the company due to its poor sales. From the 15th October 2014 to the 29th October,
there has been a steady increase in the share price. This could have been due to an increase in
sales and therefore building up investors confidence to buy shares in Cineworld. Task 3

My Interest On Maternal Mortality, Morbidity, And Health
My interest in maternal mortality, morbidity, and health was first piqued by my mother, who has
always worked in the field. As I got older, I began to more completely grasp the topics that she
dealt with, and the implications they had for women universally. Even to this day, I cannot
understand why women, the creators of life, do not receive more respect, or even regard, for the
services they provide humanity. That is why this topic interests me so much, because even after
reading all the material about how women are mistreated and abused in regard to their childbearing
abilities and processes, it always brings me back to asking the question, why women?
Despite the evidence that universal access to contraception results in fewer newborn and maternal
deaths, helps create stronger communities by empowering women and girls, and leads to more
girls staying in school for longer, which in turn increases their lifetime earnings and opportunities,
there is still a huge number of women and girls around the world that have an unmet need for
modern contraception. The Millennium Development Goals for 2015 called for universal access
to contraception by the end of 2015, and while some progress has been made, it doesn t seem that
the goal will be achieved. In 2012, however, at the London Summit on Family Planning some
momentum was gained on the matter. The summit brought together governments, civil society

Civil War Weapons Technology
Research Paper on Civil War Weapons and Technology The American Civil War, lasting from
1861 to 1865, was one of the bloodiest wars that the world has ever seen. The number of
casualties resulting from the Civil War was a staggering six hundred and twenty thousand
American soldiers. Although there are many explanations as to why the Civil War was so
murderous, such as disease or lack of medical advancements, the main reason why it was so
deadly was because of the newly introduced technology and weaponry. Some of the new
technologies that came about during the Civil War were rifles, railroads, ironclad ships, and

When the Civil War broke out in 1861, the majority of the U.S. Navy supported the Union. This
left the Confederates with little naval strength. At this time, all naval ships were made out of
wood, so in order to give themselves more of an advantage over the Union, the Confederates
began to assemble ironclads or purchase ironclads from other countries. In response, the Union
began to manufacture ironclad warships as well. Once both sides developed their ironclad
warships, they were used significantly and were extremely successful in battle. The first battle
that ironclads were used in was the Battle of Hampton Roads, which lasted for two days. Mark
Weaver writes that after Virginia ceded from the Union in 1861, the Union navy placed a blockade
on Hampton Roads. In response, the Confederate Navy sent the CSS Virginia, an ironclad warship,
to destroy the blockade. When the Union Navy heard this, they sent out their ironclad warship, the
USS Monitor. However, the CSS Virginia arrived before the USS Monitor and therefore, many
Union wooden battleships defending the blockade were obliterated. When the USS Monitor arrived
the next day, the battle of two ironclads occurred for the first time in history. Both ironclads fought
and battled for hours, but in the end, the CSS Virginia retreated and the USS Monitor was

Platonic Love In Plato s Symposium
Plato s Symposium attempts to define the eclectic theory of love, a theory that is often believed to
be the universal principle that guides mankind s actions. Plato introduces several narratives in the
form of a dialogue that seek to characterize this multifaceted theory of Eros. The meaning of love
naturally varies in each narrative. Yet, in this dialogue of love, Platopresents a metaphysical
approach to understanding the ambiguous meaning of love. Ultimately, Plato values the perennial
quest for knowledge above all else. In Symposium, Platonic love is exhibited in the relationship
between virtue and desire, as expressed in Diotima s ladder. Desire is the vehicle, or the means to
an end. The six Athenians ultimately present different... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The older man will exchange his knowledge and virtue to the younger man for the fulfillment of
the older man s sexual desires. Like Plato, Pausanias believes that the highest maxim in the
world to strive for is virtue: For he too has demonstrated something about himself: that he is the
sort of person who will do anything for the sake of virtue and what could be more honorable that
that? It follows, therefore, that giving in to your lover for virtue s sake is honorable, what ever
the outcome. (185B) Yet, Plato, through Socrates and Diotima, differs from Pausanias in the
way in which virtue is obtained. For Pausanias, the relationship between desire and virtue
requires favors to be exchanged for both bodily and mindful stimulation. Since virtue is the
desired outcome for the young man, he must submit to the authority of the older man by
basically any means necessary, namely through sexual favors. Homosexuality appears to be a
common beginning for the quest of virtue and philosophy, but by what means necessary to
obtain these ends? Plato presents Pausanias s theory to be only partially correct, as he ultimately
extols a love that requires no sexual love. In Pausanias s theory of love, sexual love is necessary to
fulfill the both needs. Plato s ideal form of love is fully expressed in the concept of Diotima s ladder.
Platonic love only partially identifies with Pausanias s theory. Pausanias s speech and the speeches

Donaldson Lufkin and Jenrette Case Study Essay
DLJ was founded in 1959 by William Donaldson, Dan Lufkin, and Richard Jenrette, which whom
set out with $100,000 to create an equity research firm that would serve institutional shareholders.
The firm went public in 1970 after gradually increasing the services provided to clients and
diversifying in the face of competition. DLJ was a member of NYSE and retained their
membership by offering shares of itself to the public. DLJ sold itself to Equitable in 1985, after
facing capital requirements. Equitable was a mutual life insurance company, owned by
policyholders. Jenrette joined Equitable as chief investment officer, and he later became chairman
of the company in 1990. He initiated a restructuring of Equitable in response to serious... Show

They were unsure that DLJ could find new business lines to expand, in which would maintain its
profits margins and growth rates. Anther problem addressed dealt with maintaining post IPO
profits. The stock market has increased from 1.896 in 86 to 4.789 in 95 thus creating an incentive
for DLJ to offer an IPO. Strategy involved being the IPO allowed employees to exchange their
compensation plans for shares and options in DLJ thus giving them an incentive to stay with the
company. There were also many advantages and disadvantages related to DLJ going public.
Advantages included DLJ increasing liquidity and allowing founders to harvest their wealth,
permitting founders to diversify, facilitated raising new corporate cash, established value for the
firm, and increasing the potential markets. Disadvantages included the cost of reporting, new
disclosure requirements, self dealings, a possibility of inactive markets reducing price, the firm
losing some of its control, and a higher degree of investor relations had to be maintained.
Equitable chose an equity carve out method for DLJ. This would allow them to retain at least 50%
of the equity of the subsidiary, so it could still consolidate its financial statements as well as file a
consolidated tax return. An obvious advantage of this method is the parent company doesn t lose
control over its subsidiary. Another advantage of this method and the spin off method is

Benefits of Technology Incorporation into a Classroom Setting
Today, our society is more technologically advanced than it has ever been, and our schools have
become more technologically progressive over the past few years, but does having technology in
the classroom help or hinder the students from learning? A quote by John Dewey from his book
Democracy and Education stated If we teach today s students as we taught yesterday s, we rob them
of tomorrow. Integrating technologyinto classrooms is not only essential in preparing the students
for the future, but it is also an effective teaching method. Many surveys and studies have been
done about using technology to teach students. Even as early as 6 years old to college level and

For example, give a brief description of technological manner in a classroom, allow usage during
non test days for note taking and the penalty of a reduced participation if the technology proves
distracting to the student or his/her peers (Jackson). Another way to ensure that the students are not
misusing the technology is for the teachers to teach the students how to get the most out of it. Most
devices can be connected to the internet and there are almost an infinite number of things that you
can do, see, and use while on there, but if the students spend their time doing assignments, projects

John Stuart Mills Act Utilitarianism
The choices people make on a daily basis have consequences, good or bad. Most people want their
choices to have good consequences, but these consequences may benefit either themselves or
everyone. This is the thinking of a utilitarian. Utilitarians want to make the choice with the most
benefit to people as a whole, and they try to eliminate the bad consequences (Nathanson).
Utilitarians are followers of the moral philosophy utilitarianism. Jeremy Benthamand John Stuart
Mills created a moral philosophy where the action itself is weighed against the effects of the action,
and act and rule utilitarians determine which action is more beneficial in different ways. The
history of utilitarianism starts before Bentham and Mills, but these thinkers... Show more content on

Their differences lie in how they evaluate the actions that have the most benefit. The act utilitarians
believe that whenever we are deciding what to do, we should perform the action that will create
the greatest net utility while rule utilitarians believe we should judge particular moral rules by
seeing whether their acceptance into our moral code would produce more well being than other
possible rules. (Nathanson). Their differences can be associated with the different principles in
Utilitarianism, Bentham s Principle of Utility and Mill s Greatest Happiness Principle. Act
utilitarians base their evaluation on Bentham s principle and rule utilitarians base their evaluation
on Mill s principle. Act utilitarians stress the importance of dealing with each moral problem
individually, and posing a solution that will work with that specific case (Nathanson). An example
of this is the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The assassination is not a type of action, it is an
individual action with its own effects. Rule utilitarians stress that rules are necessary to deal with
specific types of actions such as killing or stealing (Nathanson). Rule utilitarians have a similar
belief to the justice system today. Rule utilitarianism is demonstrated in Fyodor Dostoyevsky s
novel Crime and Punishment. In the novel, the main character, Raskolnikov, murders an old
pawnbroker with the thought that the murder would benefit society. This is rule utilitarianism
because the act of murder is a type of action and the focus of the novel is to see the effects of the
murder. That type of thinking is in line with rule utilitarian ideas. Despite their differences, they
both believe the basic principle of utilitarianism, the overall aim in evaluating actions should be to
create the best results possible

Queen Gertrude And Gertrude In Shakespeare s Hamlet
Queen Gertrude is a character in the Shakespearian play Hamlet. She is a very secretive character.
After the death of her husband, King Hamlet, she marries her former brother in law, Claudius. In
the play, Shakespeare portrays her as sexually driven woman. Even though she has caused hamlet,
her son, a great deal of pain, Gertrudeis very protective of him. Hamletis blinded by revenge and
accusations that he fails to see his mother for what she truly is. Throughout the play, Hamlet is
disappointed by his mother for remarrying just after a month of the funeral. After the Ghostof his
father reveals to him how his Uncle, Claudius, poisoned him, Hamlet starts to blame both Claudius
and Gertrude for the death of his father.
Claudius s relationship with Gertrude is very typical for that era. As her husband, he controls
and treats as a child. Men considered women to be childlike and lascivious. Even though she
might not be neither of those things, both the Ghost of King Hamlet and Claudius as a man, see
her as a child. In the play, Gertrude is accused by the Ghost and Hamlet. The Ghost describes her
as seeming virtuous (1.5,46) which implies, she was having an affair with his brother before he
was murdered and not grieving for him long enough and accuses his brother as adulterate beast

In this essay, I will be writing about the great Colosseum of Rome and what was held inside to give
the citizens of Rome some entertainment. The Romans had many choices of what to do during
their spare time, such as ball games, board games, and watching gladiatorial fights in the
Colosseum; this was the most popular type of entertainment. To many people today, Roman
entertainment was classed as cruel. However, not all forms of entertainment involved such violence

From this day on nothing has been the same the people were devastated that it happened and cried

have drastically changed.
After the revolutionary war George Washington set a guide line for our national security. First he
wanted to maintain international independence then focus on economic growth (Donohue 1589).
He felt like that it was important to support our countries economy but not at the price of sacrificing
our security. Under George Washington direction the Constitutional Convention wanted a national
government that could keep the country safe from foreign attacks and keep the individual states
unified. They created a constitution that strengthened the national government s control over the
military and foreign affairs, as well as over taxation and commerce (Donohue 1588, 1591).
After the Spanish American War the focus of the U.S. security changed. United States people felt

Authentic Grasp of Being Essay
Authentic Grasp of Being
Martin Heidegger provides an interesting lesson about what must be done to authentically grasp the
nature of being in Being and Time. The focus of being in his book is the unique individual human
consciousness referred to as Dasein, and authenticity is regarded as that which accords with Dasein
s own self, including its history, present concerns, and future possibilities. The thesis of this paper
is an interpretative one: the path to authentically grasping one s own being requires first
disregarding philosophical history regarding being and then understanding one s own
presuppositions. More fully, the phenomena that give rise to examining ontology must be analyzed,
which means that one must not simply start with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The major problem presented by this philosophical tradition is that it is presented dogmatically and
so we are eager to accept its offerings without questioning their starting points. On page 43 in our
translation Heidegger writes, Dasein has had its historicality so thoroughly uprooted by tradition
that it confines its interests to the multiformity of possible types, directions, and standpoints of
philosophical activity in the most exotic and alien of cultures; and by this very interest it seeks to
veil the fact that it has no ground of its own to stand on. The main point of this statement is that we
are distracted by the seemingly rich inquiries into being that have already been carried out, and we
assume that all the different possibilities for grounding these inquires have been carefully
considered and exhausted. This rich quotation also tells us that we each have an existential history
that we can personally examine to begin understanding the nature of being, and it further implies
that our inquiry is going to be grounded in the phenomenon of personal experience. The
philosophical tradition about being dazzles us with assertions and arguments to the extent that we
no longer consider personal experience as a starting point.
Earlier in his introduction (section one), Heidegger tells us of three major themes developed by the
philosophical tradition discussed in section six. In the first major theme, the concept of being has
been oversimplified as an easy

I do not agree with this article because the entire thing is bias towards cats. There are more cat pets
over dogs. Cats should have the freedom to be outdoors, not get blamed for the destruction of the
environment and more studies should be done on how cats are worthy rather than the immoral

An ECU defined by (Arun Manohar) [26] is an electronic device, essentially a computer, in an
internal combustion engine that reads several sensors in the engine and uses the information to
control the fuel injection and ignition systems of the engine. Arun Manohar definition does not
include that an ECU also controls aspects of an engine like air/fuel ratio, idle speed, valve
control and variable valve timing [1]. Controlling an engine via electronic means allows an
engines operation to be controlled in greater detail, allowing greater fuel efficiency, better power
and responsiveness. Modern ECUs use a microprocessor which can process the inputs from the
engine sensors in real time. An ECU contains the hardware and software (firmware). Hardware
consists of electronic components on a printed circuit board (PCB). The main component on this
circuit board is a micro controller chip. The software is stored in the microcontroller on the PCB,
or flash memory so the CPU can be re programmed by uploading updated code. Sensors located on
the engine send data to the ECU and within the software exists look up tables, from the inputs the
ECU is able to map the required output based on the input data from the lookup table.

that it is possible to develop an ECU from the NI CompactRIO hardware to control and change an

Risks and Effects of West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus has many effects on the human body as well as on the bodies of other animals.
West Nile is an extremely dangerous virus that attacks the Central Nervous System. It can cause
inflammation of tissues in and around the brain and spinal cord. In humans, there are three levels of
West Nile Virus, which have different symptoms. Humans can also get specific diseases such as
encephalitis from West Nile Virus. West Nile Virus also affects animals. Wild birds and horses

Pros And Cons Of School Blocking Students
Professor Sam Wineburg of Stanford University adamantly opposes the practice of schools
blocking students from certain websites and databases such as Wikipedia, Twitter, and Instagram.
Dr. Wineburg suggests that if students only have access to information chosen and filtered by the
institution, their ability to choose what to believe, and how to think will not develop. If students
do not have access to sites such as Wikipedia, once they are able to browse freely, they will be
unable to tell what is reliable. By imposing these restrictions, schools are failing to allow students to
think freely. More importantly, they are depriving students of furthering their intelligence by
choosing themselves what information is valid and what is not. These constraints essentially tell
students what to believe; therefore, once they go beyond classroom doors and browse freely, they
will be incapable of finding sources on their own. Furthermore, blockingsites only worsens the
spread of fake news, since students believe everything they read. I agree with Dr. Wineburg in that
schools should not blockcertain websites. Blocking students from sources or only allowing certain
online databases not only limits students ability to expand their knowledge, but harms their free
thinking and forces them to believe the information placed in front of them, ultimately contributing
to students spreading fake news.

Impossibility within the Fantasy realm in Alphabet of Thorn and the Year of Our War
As Farah Mendelsohn stated, the most obvious construction of fantasy in literature and art is the
presence of the impossible and the unexplainable. In my perspective, both McKillip and Swainston
brilliantly expand our perception of the impossible by introducing us to different elements of fantasy
such as time travel in Alphabet of Thorn and an alternate reality known as the Shift in The Year of
Our War. The fantasy genre encourages us to keep an open mind as we delve into other worlds;
simply put, fantasy shows the readers how to perceive the world differently. While both of these
novels clearly create a delineation of the impossible through an ... Show more content on

It s important to note that even though the audience is aware of the impossibility of giant, flesh
devouring insects, we are persuaded that this world of fantasy is indeed real. After analyzing
both novels, one of the most significant similarities between the two would be the author s
intentional system of rules placed in the story in order to explain how the world operated. In the
Year of Our War, after god left the Fourlands, the Empire created a circle of 50 immortals to fight
the war (93). Mortals and immortals coexisted peacefully because of the hierarchal power
system placed upon the Empire and the King; not to mention their common enemy of swarming
insects attacking all living beings. On the other hand, the Alphabet of Thorn provided a history
of the 12 Crowns of Raine and the individual roles associated with the floating school, Royal
Library etc. The authors, in their own writing style, have revealed to us what is possible and
considered the norm within their worlds. This makes it easier for us to differentiate the reality
from the impossible when those fantasy elements are introduced later on in the plotline. For
instance, in our mundane world, we perceive magic to be impossible, but it s very much real in
Raine. What deems to be impossible in one world becomes possible in another story.

The Nurse s Role With Patients
The Nurse s Role in Helping Patients Cope with Loss
Laurel Ellzey
Denver School of Nursing
Abstract
Death is a universal part of life. Everyone will eventually experience it. Nurses play an integral role
with their patients when it comes to dealing with bereavement, grief, and mourning. Nurses provide
bereavement care by listening to patients, helping them express their emotions, and involving them
in the entire process. Nurses frequently tend to the emotional needs of their patients, but not their
own, which can result in nurse burn out. Nurses are expected to be resilient when it comes to death,
but when they sweep their emotions under the rug to get on with the day and are not given the
resources needed to grieve successfully, how can they achieve this?
The Nurse s Role with Patients and Loss
Death is a part of life and eventually everyone on this earth will experience it. Nurses play an
important role with bereaved patients. Not only by being there, but also because everyone grieves
in their own way. However, for those experiencing disenfranchised grief, the process may be more
difficult. Mourning the death of a loved one is a natural response to death and Worden s four tasks
allow those to progress through the tasks in any way. Bereavement, grief, and mourning are all
affected by one s culture, religion, and the relationship among deceased, their personality, and how
the person died.

The following figure shows the agarose gel results of the digested DNA plasmids 1 and 2 as
well as the molecular weight markers. This allows for the visualisation of DNA by adding
fluorescent dye SYBR Green to the gel loading dye which was then added to the restriction
digest. These results belong to Jessica and Vince in Group 13. My results did not provide clear
bands above the top maker, which may be a result of the restriction digest not working properly.
However, these results below illustrate two clear bands of each of the digested plasmids and the
bands are below the top maker.
DNA plasmid 1 is determined to be Integrin insert since the size of plasmid fragment is 1122 bp,
which is relatively close to 1,250 bp, as seen in Figure 4. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The product of the restriction enzyme digestion of plasmid DNA was analysed visually on
agarose electrophoresis. The identity of the plasmid fragment in plasmid 1 at 1122 bp is
established to be Integrin. The identity of the plasmid fragment in plasmid 2 at 501 bp is
determined to be VEGF.
The isolated DNA plasmid is quantitated using UV absorbance and SYBR Green fluorescent
methods. The concentration of plasmids 1 and 2, using UV absorbance, was established to be
3227 Вµg/mL and 3951 Вµg/mL, respectively. This method also determines the 260/280 ratio for
plasmid 1 which was 1.390 and for plasmid 2 which was 1.342. Furthermore, the plasmids are
both contaminated with proteins. The SYBR Green fluorescent method is more accurate than the
UV absorbance method since it is more specific for double stranded DNA molecules. Therefore,
the SYBR Green assay results are lower than those obtained in the UV absorbance and are
estimated to be 163 Вµg/mL and 202 Вµg/mL,

Upcoming Presidential Election
3 Things to Keep in Mind for the Upcoming Presidential Election
1. Only about 10% of the entire nation voted for Trump OR Clinton
Yup, that s right, only about 10% of the entire nation voted for Donald Trump OR Hilary Clinton,
yet they are still the Presidential Candidates from the Republican and Democratic Parties. How?
In the presidential primaries Donald Trump won the state of Alabama with roughly 43% of all the
voters. However, only .3% of registered voters voted for him at all. In a state of 4.8 million, only
14000 voted. In Tennessee, Hillary won with 66% of 3.7% of the total registered. While
substantially higher than Trump s Alabama win, it is still an unacceptably low turnout for the voting
of the possible President of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Third party voters are sometime the difference between a victory and a loss for a presidential
candidate. Most don t mention it, but you do have power. Each and every vote counts. While a 3rd
might not win the election, they still impact it. Al Gore would have won the 2000 presidential
election if he had received 1% of the votes that Ralph Nader, Green Party Presidential Nominee,
received. 3rd party voters helped to give the win to George W. Bush. Not only do 3rd party
voters impact who wins the election, but they can convince candidates to change their
platforms. Candidates want voters, a handful of voters can mean the difference between a
Republican President or a Democratic President. In order to get these key voters, they change
the way they phrase responses, comments, and their general speech. For example, take Donald
Trump. Just listen to how his tone changes between each debate, every appearance, even
between every tweet. He s trying to secure key groups to his victory that would normally vote 3rd
party or not vote at all. However, if you don t like the changes either candidate has made and still
feel as if this is a lesser of the two evils election, then vote 3rd party. Who knows? Maybe Gary
Johnson will be this winner, all it requires is for you to actually register and

Black Hat Or Devil s Advocate Process
Black Hat or Devil s Advocate Process
The best solution to the dissatisfaction that is caused when a title is held and not sent to the
payoff dealer in a timely manner is to create a dealer notification process. This process will consist
of contacting the dealer by phone, email or fax to notify them of the accounts that have a title on
hold for missing odometer statement. The solution should be implemented because it is quick to
implement, will have a low cost to implement and will have a big impact on the issue. If the
dealers are notified as soon as the title is placed on hold they can fax or email the odometer to the
Title Services and Support department immediately. The Title Services and Support department will
be able to deliver the title to the dealer a timely manner.
If this solution is implemented one impact that could go wrong is that the dealers could become
frustrated with BMW Financial Services if the Title Services and Support department does not
notify them of an account that is on hold or the dealer could become frustrated if the Title Services
and Support department contacts them to many times about an account that is on hold. A weakness
and risk of the solution are keeping the BMW dealer group contact information up to date. The Title
Services and Support department will need to be in constant communication with the BMW Group
dealers to ensure they are calling, emailing or faxing the request for odometer statements to the
correct contact.

The Kano Model For Customer Satisfaction
One of the most used models for customer satisfaction is the Kano model, which has a high
performance and sufficiency in most businesses. Japanese Noriaki Kano a well known global
quality theorist believes that there is a strong relationship between quality and customer
satisfaction. From Kano s perspective, today quality enumerates an integral part of any business. It
is one of the key factors in global competition, and because of the growing global competition, the
ability to supply customerneeds is not only possible through current products, but also by producing
innovative products and approaches to meeting his expectations, and this will depend on the exact

dependent variable changes. For a meaningful review, we look at the last column of the table
(sig). This statistically meaningful column shows the regression model that if the obtained
value is less than 0.05, then we conclude that the model used is a good predictor of the
satisfaction variable. The significance level in our research is less than 0.05, which indicates
that the regression model is meaningful. The SPSS software provides several tables for

intensity of the correlation between the two variables. As shown by the value of R (Pearson
correlation between two variables), between the two independent and dependent variables the
correlation is very strong. The value of R square indicates how much of the dependent variable can

The Influence Of Augustus
Gaius Octavius, who later became known as Augustus, was part of the Second Triumvirate along
with Antony and Lepidus. Caesar s assassination had instigated multiple civil wars caused by
disagreements between aristocrats fighting for power. Augustus rose to power during that period of
war and chaos. When Augustusemerged, he was readily accepted because the Romans were tired
of all of the power struggles and also because Augustus did not impose himself on the Romans.
Under Augustus rule, Rome entered the Pax Romana, which was a period of peace that lasted for
200 years. He was a kind ruler and did not act like a tyrant. During Augustus reign, improvements
occurred in Rome s economy, military, government and architecture. Because the Romans... Show

This was mostly because of all his achievements for the empire. He divided Rome into fourteen
districts, each with an administrator elected by the locals, to make the empire easier to manage,
thus solving Rome s previous expansion problem. After the death of Caesar, the number of senators
had increased greatly. Many of them were unworthy and had gotten the position through bribery. In
order to lower the number of senators, Augustus instructed each member to nominate one another
and then chose personally from that list of names. In doing this, Augustus was able to cut the
number of senators from 1000 to 600. This raised the standards of being a senator and lowered the
chance of corruption. Furthermore, Augustus extended the borders of the empire in the Iberian
Peninsula, Gaul, Germany, Middle East and Asia Minor. He created alliances with other kingdoms
that wanted to avoid war with the Romans. Augustus also restored and erected great public
buildings, temples, theatres, bathhouses, arches and his own mausoleum. He repaired roads and
aqueducts using both his own money and war spoils. Augustus even boasted that he: found Rome
built of bricks; I leave her clothed in marble. Architecture during his time was an example of his
central policy: the concept of building new and better things on the ruins of the past. In the end,
Augustus satisfied the Romans by exceeding the

An Analysis Of Tim O Brien s Things They Carried
Stories play a very important role in our society. However, the process that the story is told
differs based on its form. For example is it a poem (which has a specific form and style) or is it a
prose (written/spoken language without any metrical structure)? Although poetry and prose greatly
differs from each other, there are many similarities between them. Prose is defined to be in an
ordinary form, but prose can share some poetic qualities such as literary devices, imagery, and
theme, and many more. Tim O Brien s Things They Carried depicts a fragmented stories about his
and other soldiers experiences that occurred in the VietnamWar. Similarly, the poem, Facing It
shows a soldier who returns to the Memorial of the Vietnam War where he recalls his own
trauma in the war as he looks at the stones. Both the prose, Things They Carried and the poem,
Facing it conveys the similar theme where they are struggling to overcome the trauma of the war
and face the reality. However, the style and the form that the poem and the prose is depicted
differs from each other. The main theme of The Things They Carried is how O Brien utilizes the
strategy of storytelling in order to transcend the reality so that he can convey the truths of his and
other soldiers traumatic experiences. O Brien mentions in the story that after getting drafted, he
flees to the the Rainy River, on the border of Canada. In actuality, O Brien never fled to the Rainy
River. He did not lie so

Rhetorical Address
Logos, pathos, and ethos have been existing to empower and strengthen our writing. In this
rhetorical analysis essay, logos, pathos, and ethos that are used in the Annual Address will be
clearly identified and evaluated. The Annual Address written by Joseph Jackson discusses the
issues of discrimination and racism. It was written and delivered at the 84th Annual Session of the
National Baptist Movement. Unlike many others back in history, Jackson believes that actions
should be taken place before any demanded result. Jackson appeals to his fellow race to take
action and adds credibility to his claims by using historical examples from the past. Also, Jackson
makes personal connections with his targeted audience, black people, which builds trust between
the speaker and the reader. We will be examining the context of the this speech and Jackson s
perspective and claims.
The Annual Address starts off discussing the foundation of this nation. Into a few paragraphs, he
addresses the civil rights struggle and the reason behind it. About half of his speech address some
advice and suggestions for the future of the black people. Joseph Jackson writes the Annual
Address, telling the black people to put an action in their beliefs and for justice, in a way
contradicting King s perspective on peaceful protests. In page two, Jackson states, What is this
struggle for civil rights? I answer, it is an effort of American citizens to get full equality of
opportunity. It is the resolution and the determination that there shall be in these United States one
class of citizens and that is first class citizens. This is a struggle to adopt in practice as well as
theory the concept of man on which the Declaration of Independence is based, and to fully
implement the Federal Constitution, one of the greatest documents for human freedom since the
writing of the Magna Carta. The civil rights struggle is a struggle for full freedom, justice, and
equality before the law. It is a struggle to bring from paper the lofty ideals of America, and to
apply them in practice to the lives and actions of all Americans. In reality it is America s struggle
to be herself, to fulfill the highest promises of her being, and to build a social order after

Act of the Parliament of India with the establishment of The Commission of Sati (Prevention) Act,
1987 in 1988. The Act looks to avoid Sati hone or the intentional or constrained blazing or
covering alive of dowagers, and to preclude glorification of this activity through the recognition of
any service, the cooperation in any parade, the making of a monetary trust, the development of a

Assassination Of Jfk s Assassination
On the 20th of January 1961, the United States of America elected their 35th President, John
Fitzgerald Kennedy. However, two years later, he was assassinated. The assassin, Lee Harvey
Oswald was arrested 70 minutes after the assassination. There have been numerous debates over
the last 55 years regarding this incident. Many people claim there is a conspiracy behind the case,
allowing various conspiracy theories to emerge over the years. One specific theory is about how
the mafia was involved with JFK s assassination.
In 1963, the USA Presidential elections were approaching and so JFK and his wife Jacqueline
travelled to Dallas, Texas to campaign. On the day of JFK s assassination, specifically the 22nd of

It also concluded that Jack Ruby worked alone when he assassinated Oswald.
Lee Harvey Oswald, the assassin, was caught at a movie theatre. Before he could be questioned,
Oswald was shot by Jack Ruby, nightclub owner, in the basement of the Dallas Police
Headquarters, while being led to a car, which was to transport him to the local county jail. This
left the case unsolved as Oswald was not questioned properly. Ruby claimed he was distraught
about the President s death and that he did not want Mrs Kennedy to go through pain at the trial
of Oswald, which was his reason for killing Oswald. This raised questions as Ruby was seen with
Oswald various times, proving that Ruby and Oswald were acquaintances, and that Ruby may have
had another motive for killing Oswald.
Ruby owned The Carousel, which is where Oswald was seen a few days before the
assassination. Bill Demar, one of the MCs at The Carousel, identified Oswald as a regular patron
at the place. Other workers at The Carousel supported this argument including Harvey Wade,
Wally Weston, Janet Conforto and Beverly Oliver. Oliver confirmed that she had once seen
Conforto, Ruby and Oswald sitting together. She was then introduced to Oswald by Ruby as his
friend . Oswald also had many connections to the Mafia, especially crime boss, Carlos Marcello.
During the time Oswald lived in New Orleans, he lived with the Dutz Murret family, Dutz Murret

  • 2. The Importance of Class in American Discourse, and the... Americans avoid broaching the subject of class in America, notes Mantsios (2006). To support his claim, Mantsios (2006) states that most poor people in the United States identify first with their racial heritage, ethnic heritage, or geographic location. Members of the working class do not consider themselves part of a collective of workers, but rather as employees of a specific company. References to a middle class are, according to Mantsios (2006), usually done by politicians to pander to the broadest possible constituency, (p. 183). When relative wealth or poverty is addressed in the mainstream media, it is done so without reference to the structural issues that cause income disparity. Mantsios (2006) proceeds to outline several myths, including the overarching myth that America is a classless society (p. 183). The second of his four main myths related to class in America is that Despite some variations in economic status, most Americans have achieved relative affluence in what is widely recognized as a consumer society, (p. 184). Certainly, to a villager in Zimbabwe a poor American might seem to have relative affluence. Yet within the broader scheme of American society, it seems insulting to claim validity to this myth. Mantsios (2006) offers some hypothetical case studies to highlight the importance of class in American discourse, and the falsehood of the myth of universal affluence. • 3. Research On The Methods Of Surveying Surveys and Happiness: A study on the different techniques used to persuade individuals to participate in survey taking By: Zachary Bernal University of Kansas Abstract Many studies have been done regarding researchers abilities to obtain information from individuals from various methods of surveying. Drawing on the social psychological factors of persuasion and compliance, studies have shown that if individuals receive something from the researcher (e.g. money, conversation, advice) they are much more likely to agree to participate in the survey due to the norms of reciprocity (Groves et al., 1992). Another key factor in determining people s compliance with a request draws on the ideas that individuals in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Over the years I started to wonder what the most effective way was to address new customers. Sometimes I would approach them and before I say a word they already dismiss me with an, I m good, thanks. Making it quite clear they don t want my help or anything I m selling. So I started to ask myself what leads to the most customer involvement and willingness to be sold to? I finally began to notice that if the customer was simply asked how their day was going, or first primed with casual conversation before asking if they needed any help on the sales floor, they were much more likely to request my help or ask a question. These interactions between customers lead to broader implications of persuasion and compliance. Compliance is defined as, Responding favorably to an explicit request by another person. (Gilovich, et al., 2013). Persuasion is defined as, The action of influencing someone or of being influenced to do or believe something. (Gillath, 2014). These mechanisms of persuasion and compliance could carry larger implications outside of the retail setting. It seems as though people are much more likely to be compliant to a request and succumb to persuasion if they are in a better mood. Therefore, if salespeople, telemarketers, charities, and other institutions were to add a more personal experience to their target they will increase the likelihood of that individual to be persuaded or ... Three Laws Of Robot Essay The Effectiveness of Isaac Asimov`s Three Laws of Robotics In 1950 a collection of short stories by Isaac Asimov gathered under a name I, Robot was first published commencing a whole new era in the field of fiction. Asimov first explicitly introduced the Three Laws of Robotics in the short story Runaround, published in the March 1942 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. In his 1985 novel Robots and Empire, Asimov formulated an additional Zeroth Law, to stand above the original three: No harm to humanity, or, allowing any harm to humanity by inaction. Other science fiction writers have explored similar ideas, sometimes anticipating Asimov s laws and sometimes expanding on them. (Wallach 219) It was the first book to use the word robot ... But, as mentioned before, robots can under certain circumstances interpret the Laws differently and what is more important can be seen as a better version of a human being. Asimov (3) wrote through the words of Susan Calvin: Then you don t remember a world without robots. There was a time when humanity faced the universe alone and without a friend. Now he has creatures to help him; stronger creatures than himself, more faithful, more useful, and absolutely devoted to him. Mankind is no longer alone. Have you ever thought of it that way? ... They re a cleaner, better breed than we are. In this sense robots deserve to be considered as equals to humans and even more than that, as superior beings. • 6. Key Themes Of Political Power In Machiavelli s Richard II Political power does not come from an army, or a full treasury. Instead, it comes from the subjects, or the people. If the people like a ruler, or leader, it gives them power to act, largely, however they please, but, if the ruler is not well liked, not only does the ruler lose the ability to act, even within the law, but they are much more likely to lose their throne. Throughout Richard II political staging is a means to obtain power, both successfully, and unsuccessfully. In doing so, it reveals the identity of the characters and how they view the world and their place in it. It also demonstrates the problem that power presents, and how it can be hard to wear a political mask, and retain something that is fundamentally individual. In Machiavelli s The Prince, he outlines and ideal ruler, and how they would act, and the best ways to seize power. One of the key themes that underlies this work, is that power comes from the people, not divine right, or inheritance. This question of where power comes from, is also present in Richard II, and it plays out both literally and intellectually within the play. Power from the people, plays out literally in the play, when Henry, works to win people over, so that he can overthrow Richard. Later on in the play, Richard realizes that power comes from the people and not from divine right, and realizes that he has screwed up, and lost the bit of power that he did have. Machiavelli also discusses the importance of appearances. For example, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

During the first world war boundaries were set making sure that no graphic imagery was released, but by the time the Vietnam war ended the world would have a new cache of violent and bloody combat photography in their living rooms. In 1965, at the beginning of the US s involvement in the VietnamWar no one paid it much mind, including the media. But as soon as reporters began to take interest restrictions came down, not unlike any other war the U.S has participated in. The poem The Rime of Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge is about the ancient mariner narratives his experience of being saved from a ship without wind or sails to the wedding guests. In this poem, the idea of innocence and experienced is demonstrated: God save thee, ancient Mariner! From the fiends, that plague thee thus! Why look st thou so? With my cross bow I shot the ALBATROSS(line 79 82). The mariners have nothing but the ALBATROSS plays with them on the ship. I believe the ALBATROSS is the symbol of innocence and nature; this is the reason why the author capitalized this word. • 13. Neruda Poetry Analysis Reflective Statement Neruda Poetry Throughout the interactive oral, we discussed Neruda s beliefs and how they influenced his poetry. Moreover, we discussed how these things not only influenced his writing style, but also his life. Previously, I thought that I could not relate to Neruda because his beliefs differed very much from mine. These beliefs clashed because Neruda is from a Latin American country that is communist, and he is also a communist; while someone like me lives in the United States which is a democracy. Following this, Neruda s work was easier to relate to than I had originally thought because he talks about the Latin American struggle and gave his people a voice in poems such as United Fruit co. when he names the American companies that took advantage of Chile and other Latin American countries. In the IOQ, we as a class think communists are bad because of the way they are displayed in the United States, but the IOQ helped me understand that Neruda was more than a communist. Neruda was a person who used his platform, and took risks writing controversial poems about the struggle of his people to give them a voice, and politics to expose the corruptness of those leaders because they were not only taking advantage of their people but also giving communism a negative connotation. Adding on, Neruda was a strong advocate for communism which influenced his writing also even though he wrote about other communist leaders such as Martinez and Trujillo, his love for communism was shown when he wrote the ode to Fidel Castro. Neruda admires Castro because in his eves Fidel Castro does communism the right way unlike Martinez and Trujillo who took advantage of their countries resources and people. The way Neruda portrays Fidel Castro contradicts the way America portrays him because Castro is characterized as a person who killed anyone that got in the way of his vision of a perfect Cuba, While Neruda characterizes him as hero of communism because he did not corrupt his people by letting American companies take over Cuba and take advantage of the people of Cuba. Overall, the IOQ enhanced my appreciation and understanding of Neruda s work, some of Neruda s work was controversial, yet people could still relate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Does Marjane Satrapi Use Animation In Persepolis In the animation Persepolis, Marjane Satrapi uses color in the beginning of the animation during her present day life and black and white for flashbacks or her past life. The majority of the animation is the story of Marjane s life in the past so it is in mostly black and white. This is an interesting way of using color because in a way color is used as a form of timeline, there are parts of the animation that switch from present to past, so Satrapi just switches from black and white to color to show time period. I find this concept very appealing and creative. are the growing tensions of the political climate in Iranin the 70s and 80s, with members of her liberal leaning family detained and then executed, and the background of the disastrous... I did not know that women in Iran during the post war periods were treated so poorly by men in authority, I also did not know that alcohol was a forbidden beverage. Thermal Noise Noise due to random motion of electrons cause thermal noise. Due to this noise signal s shape distorted. While some people still think having your children vaccinated against common illnesses such as chicken pox and the flu is dangerous, I myself think it is perfectly fine to have your children vaccinated on the schedule recommended by pediatricians. Some parents choose to have their children vaccinated on a delayed schedule, which I still find acceptable. However, the parents who choose not to have their children vaccinated at all are a danger to the public. Unvaccinated people can cause outbreaks of viruses that have been eradicated. In late 2014 a measles outbreak occurred when an unvaccinated child who was a carrier of the disease visited Disneyland. This caused 173 people from seventeen different states to contract the virus that was eradicated from the United States in 2002. In order for measles to be under control 94 99% of the population must be vaccinated. With the recent trend of not vaccinating, measles, along with other once eradicated, or nearly eradicated diseases are making a come back. For a week from the 8th October 2014, the share prices have dropped. This could have been due to a decrease in revenue. As a result, this may have led to investors falling out with Cineworld and therefore, people may not have wanted to invest in the company due to its poor sales. From the 15th October 2014 to the 29th October, there has been a steady increase in the share price. This could have been due to an increase in sales and therefore building up investors confidence to buy shares in Cineworld. Task 3 Cineworld Group was founded in 1995 by Steve Wiener and Senior Management Team. It is one of the leading cinema groups in Europe. Between 1996 and 2004, 35 multiplex cinemas opened with the first one being located in Stevenage. • 18. My Interest On Maternal Mortality, Morbidity, And Health My interest in maternal mortality, morbidity, and health was first piqued by my mother, who has always worked in the field. As I got older, I began to more completely grasp the topics that she dealt with, and the implications they had for women universally. Even to this day, I cannot understand why women, the creators of life, do not receive more respect, or even regard, for the services they provide humanity. That is why this topic interests me so much, because even after reading all the material about how women are mistreated and abused in regard to their childbearing abilities and processes, it always brings me back to asking the question, why women? Despite the evidence that universal access to contraception results in fewer newborn and maternal deaths, helps create stronger communities by empowering women and girls, and leads to more girls staying in school for longer, which in turn increases their lifetime earnings and opportunities, there is still a huge number of women and girls around the world that have an unmet need for modern contraception. The Millennium Development Goals for 2015 called for universal access to contraception by the end of 2015, and while some progress has been made, it doesn t seem that the goal will be achieved. In 2012, however, at the London Summit on Family Planning some momentum was gained on the matter. The number of casualties resulting from the Civil War was a staggering six hundred and twenty thousand American soldiers. Although there are many explanations as to why the Civil War was so murderous, such as disease or lack of medical advancements, the main reason why it was so deadly was because of the newly introduced technology and weaponry. Some of the new technologies that came about during the Civil War were rifles, railroads, ironclad ships, and submarines. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, the majority of the U.S. Navy supported the Union. This left the Confederates with little naval strength. At this time, all naval ships were made out of wood, so in order to give themselves more of an advantage over the Union, the Confederates began to assemble ironclads or purchase ironclads from other countries. In response, the Union began to manufacture ironclad warships as well. Once both sides developed their ironclad warships, they were used significantly and were extremely successful in battle. The first battle that ironclads were used in was the Battle of Hampton Roads, which lasted for two days. Mark Weaver writes that after Virginia ceded from the Union in 1861, the Union navy placed a blockade on Hampton Roads. In response, the Confederate Navy sent the CSS Virginia, an ironclad warship, to destroy the blockade. When the Union Navy heard this, they sent out their ironclad warship, the USS Monitor. However, the CSS Virginia arrived before the USS Monitor and therefore, many Union wooden battleships defending the blockade were obliterated. When the USS Monitor arrived the next day, the battle of two ironclads occurred for the first time in history. Both ironclads fought and battled for hours, but in the end, the CSS Virginia retreated and the USS Monitor was successful in defending the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Platonic Love In Plato s Symposium Plato s Symposium attempts to define the eclectic theory of love, a theory that is often believed to be the universal principle that guides mankind s actions. Plato introduces several narratives in the form of a dialogue that seek to characterize this multifaceted theory of Eros. The meaning of love naturally varies in each narrative. Yet, in this dialogue of love, Platopresents a metaphysical approach to understanding the ambiguous meaning of love. Ultimately, Plato values the perennial quest for knowledge above all else. In Symposium, Platonic love is exhibited in the relationship between virtue and desire, as expressed in Diotima s ladder. Desire is the vehicle, or the means to an end. The older man will exchange his knowledge and virtue to the younger man for the fulfillment of the older man s sexual desires. Like Plato, Pausanias believes that the highest maxim in the world to strive for is virtue: For he too has demonstrated something about himself: that he is the sort of person who will do anything for the sake of virtue and what could be more honorable that that? It follows, therefore, that giving in to your lover for virtue s sake is honorable, what ever the outcome. (185B) Yet, Plato, through Socrates and Diotima, differs from Pausanias in the way in which virtue is obtained. For Pausanias, the relationship between desire and virtue requires favors to be exchanged for both bodily and mindful stimulation. Since virtue is the desired outcome for the young man, he must submit to the authority of the older man by basically any means necessary, namely through sexual favors. Homosexuality appears to be a common beginning for the quest of virtue and philosophy, but by what means necessary to obtain these ends? Plato presents Pausanias s theory to be only partially correct, as he ultimately extols a love that requires no sexual love. In Pausanias s theory of love, sexual love is necessary to fulfill the both needs. Plato s ideal form of love is fully expressed in the concept of Diotima s ladder. Utilitarians are followers of the moral philosophy utilitarianism. (Nathanson). Their differences can be associated with the different principles in Utilitarianism, Bentham s Principle of Utility and Mill s Greatest Happiness Principle. Act utilitarians base their evaluation on Bentham s principle and rule utilitarians base their evaluation on Mill s principle. Act utilitarians stress the importance of dealing with each moral problem individually, and posing a solution that will work with that specific case (Nathanson). An example of this is the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The assassination is not a type of action, it is an individual action with its own effects. Rule utilitarians stress that rules are necessary to deal with specific types of actions such as killing or stealing (Nathanson). Rule utilitarians have a similar belief to the justice system today. Rule utilitarianism is demonstrated in Fyodor Dostoyevsky s novel Crime and Punishment. In the novel, the main character, Raskolnikov, murders an old pawnbroker with the thought that the murder would benefit society. This is rule utilitarianism because the act of murder is a type of action and the focus of the novel is to see the effects of the murder. That type of thinking is in line with rule utilitarian ideas. The focus of being in his book is the unique individual human consciousness referred to as Dasein, and authenticity is regarded as that which accords with Dasein s own self, including its history, present concerns, and future possibilities. The thesis of this paper is an interpretative one: the path to authentically grasping one s own being requires first disregarding philosophical history regarding being and then understanding one s own presuppositions. The major problem presented by this philosophical tradition is that it is presented dogmatically and so we are eager to accept its offerings without questioning their starting points. On page 43 in our translation Heidegger writes, Dasein has had its historicality so thoroughly uprooted by tradition that it confines its interests to the multiformity of possible types, directions, and standpoints of philosophical activity in the most exotic and alien of cultures; and by this very interest it seeks to veil the fact that it has no ground of its own to stand on. The main point of this statement is that we are distracted by the seemingly rich inquiries into being that have already been carried out, and we assume that all the different possibilities for grounding these inquires have been carefully considered and exhausted. This rich quotation also tells us that we each have an existential history that we can personally examine to begin understanding the nature of being, and it further implies that our inquiry is going to be grounded in the phenomenon of personal experience. The philosophical tradition about being dazzles us with assertions and arguments to the extent that we no longer consider personal experience as a starting point. Pros And Cons Of School Blocking Students Professor Sam Wineburg of Stanford University adamantly opposes the practice of schools blocking students from certain websites and databases such as Wikipedia, Twitter, and Instagram. Dr. Wineburg suggests that if students only have access to information chosen and filtered by the institution, their ability to choose what to believe, and how to think will not develop. If students do not have access to sites such as Wikipedia, once they are able to browse freely, they will be unable to tell what is reliable. By imposing these restrictions, schools are failing to allow students to think freely. More importantly, they are depriving students of furthering their intelligence by choosing themselves what information is valid and what is not. These constraints essentially tell students what to believe; therefore, once they go beyond classroom doors and browse freely, they will be incapable of finding sources on their own. Furthermore, blockingsites only worsens the spread of fake news, since students believe everything they read. I agree with Dr. Wineburg in that schools should not blockcertain websites. Blocking students from sources or only allowing certain online databases not only limits students ability to expand their knowledge, but harms their free thinking and forces them to believe the information placed in front of them, ultimately contributing to students spreading fake news. The fantasy genre encourages us to keep an open mind as we delve into other worlds; simply put, fantasy shows the readers how to perceive the world differently. While both of these novels clearly create a delineation of the impossible through an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It s important to note that even though the audience is aware of the impossibility of giant, flesh devouring insects, we are persuaded that this world of fantasy is indeed real. After analyzing both novels, one of the most significant similarities between the two would be the author s intentional system of rules placed in the story in order to explain how the world operated. In the Year of Our War, after god left the Fourlands, the Empire created a circle of 50 immortals to fight the war (93). Mortals and immortals coexisted peacefully because of the hierarchal power system placed upon the Empire and the King; not to mention their common enemy of swarming insects attacking all living beings. On the other hand, the Alphabet of Thorn provided a history of the 12 Crowns of Raine and the individual roles associated with the floating school, Royal Library etc. The authors, in their own writing style, have revealed to us what is possible and considered the norm within their worlds. This makes it easier for us to differentiate the reality from the impossible when those fantasy elements are introduced later on in the plotline. For instance, in our mundane world, we perceive magic to be impossible, but it s very much real in Raine. What deems to be impossible in one world becomes possible in another story. • 39. The Nurse s Role With Patients The Nurse s Role in Helping Patients Cope with Loss Laurel Ellzey Denver School of Nursing Abstract Death is a universal part of life. Everyone will eventually experience it. Nurses play an integral role with their patients when it comes to dealing with bereavement, grief, and mourning. Nurses provide bereavement care by listening to patients, helping them express their emotions, and involving them in the entire process. Nurses frequently tend to the emotional needs of their patients, but not their own, which can result in nurse burn out. Nurses are expected to be resilient when it comes to death, but when they sweep their emotions under the rug to get on with the day and are not given the resources needed to grieve successfully, how can they achieve this? The Nurse s Role with Patients and Loss Death is a part of life and eventually everyone on this earth will experience it. Nurses play an important role with bereaved patients. Not only by being there, but also because everyone grieves in their own way. However, for those experiencing disenfranchised grief, the process may be more difficult. Mourning the death of a loved one is a natural response to death and Worden s four tasks allow those to progress through the tasks in any way. Bereavement, grief, and mourning are all affected by one s culture, religion, and the relationship among deceased, their personality, and how the person died. Bereavement Role ... These results belong to Jessica and Vince in Group 13. My results did not provide clear bands above the top maker, which may be a result of the restriction digest not working properly. However, these results below illustrate two clear bands of each of the digested plasmids and the bands are below the top maker. The identity of the plasmid fragment in plasmid 1 at 1122 bp is established to be Integrin. The identity of the plasmid fragment in plasmid 2 at 501 bp is determined to be VEGF. The isolated DNA plasmid is quantitated using UV absorbance and SYBR Green fluorescent methods. The concentration of plasmids 1 and 2, using UV absorbance, was established to be 3227 Вµg/mL and 3951 Вµg/mL, respectively. This method also determines the 260/280 ratio for plasmid 1 which was 1.390 and for plasmid 2 which was 1.342. Furthermore, the plasmids are both contaminated with proteins. The SYBR Green fluorescent method is more accurate than the UV absorbance method since it is more specific for double stranded DNA molecules.
