My educational past is complicated to say the least. Starting in the fourth grade, my mother pulled me
out of traditional schooling to homeschool me, while she ran a home daycare; however, while the idea
of being homeschool sounded great in the mind of a fourth grader my mind of a 20 year old knows
this wasn t the best idea for my educational experience. Until about the 8th grade my mother, an

1. Discuss the seeming failure of communism and other forms of socialism and the apparent triumph
of capitalism in the 1990s, as well as considering capitalism s possible benefits and debits in the early
twenty first century.
Capitalism and Communism have both been put forth as the best models for modern enlightened
societies. Each philosophy contains both desirable and undesirable elements within its framework.
Communism is based on a firm belief that fiscal and social equality is the path to an ideal utopian
society. Capitalism is based on the principle of individuality, and the exercise of individual rights,
freedom, and the liberty to pursue advancement in a competitive free market. Each has shown its
strengths and weaknesses. Over the course of time however only one has emerged successfully in the
early 21st century, though not without its own egregious faults.
Communism has its roots in the philosophy of Marx and Engels. In their Communist Manifesto
published in 1848, they laid out the principles of communist society. In Communist society, no private
ownership of property is allowed. Property should be shared among the people and likewise the
economy. Through economic and social equality, the hope was that individuals would work for the
common good of society, and leave the desire for advancement, power and authority behind. Ideal
systems do not exist in nature. That statement stands alone as a pillar

Comparing Hobbe s and Locke s Theories on Nature
Two books that I am going to be drawing information from for my paper are Hobbes Leviathan and
Locke s Two Treatises of Government. This essay will be focusing on the differences between Hobbes
and Locke s ideas on the state of nature. One of the biggest, and in my opinion most important points
that makes Hobbes different from Locke is his belief that the state of nature is equal to the state of
war. Thomas Hobbes was an English philosopher, who lived between 1588 and 1679. He witnessed

He argues that nothing is unjust in the state of nature. He believes that everyone has the right to do
anything he/she wants because in the state of nature, there is no right or wrong and there is no law;

So all in all with Hobbes, he believes that all people are equal, therefore no power over the others in

Locke s idea of the state of nature is that everyone is equal to everyone. He states that, the state of
nature is also the state of equality, wherein all the power and jurisdiction is reciprocal, no one having

Terraces have long been considered to be one of the agricultural marvels of the human past. Existing
since the time of the Old World, terracing has increased the surface area of viable farmland while
helping to reduce soil erosion and limit water loss (Davidovich et al. 2012:192). Recently, scientists
have been aiming to discover more about past human settlements through the excavation and dating of

Rahel region of Israel, where scientists have been attempting to set a time period for the terraces that

Location itself played a significant role. The Holocene stream terraces are located along the San Pedro
River on a major floodplain. The flooding of the San Pedro and its two main tributaries combined with
the local precipitation levels causes the terraces to inevitably experience local erosion of bars and
infilling of swales (Onken et al. 2014:22). The dry climate of the Ramat Rahel region allows for the
terraces to remain, for the most part, out of contact with water that might erode the rock and sediment

consistency of the results from all the land samples along with the formation of logical age clusters

2012:203 204). The accuracy of the OSL results gave scientists fairly certain date approximations,

Comparing Ovid s The Myth Of Daedalus And Icarus
The myth of Daedalus and Icarus has been approached by many different artists with many differing
depictions of the event. Some artists such as Ovid, chose to focus on Daedalus and Icarus and leave
everyone else out. Other artists, for instance, Pieter Bruegel the Elder and W. H. Auden, have much
more panoramic views of the situation and include others in their works. Different approaches can
leave the readers with different understandings of this ancient myth.
In Ovid s The Myth of Daedalus and Icarus, the author uses a third person point of view to closely
follow Daedalus and Icarus. From this, readers are more tightly attached to the characters and know
more about them. Readers of this story witness the inventing and engineering of the wings by
Daedalus and know the conflicting desires of Daedalus to escape from prison and to protect his son.
One thing that is emphasized in this story is the overwhelming sorrow of Daedalus, both before due to

H. Auden, refers to the painting mentioned previously. Auden does not focus primarily on the fall of
Icarus, much like the painting, but chooses to concentrate more on artists and their depictions of
suffering. Auden says, the ploughman may Have heard the splash, the forsaken cry, But for him it was
not an important failure. The author is essentially verbalizing the painting Landscape with the Fall of
Icarus. Much like Icarus isn t a huge part of the painting, he is also given very little mention in this
poem. The underlying theme of this poem is that suffering is surrounded by the busyness of everyday
life. Even this poem is a perfect example of the overshadowing of suffering by other things, itself
