Handmaid
Charmaine Holliway Professor McRae English 1102 March 10, 2012 Escaping Gilead In Margaret
Atwood s, The Handmaid s Tale, women are subjected to unimaginable oppression. Almost every
aspect of their lives is controlled; they are not allowed to read, write, or even speak freely. Any type of
expression would be dangerous to the order of the Gilead s strict society, but the handmaids are
conditioned to believe that they are safer and better off living there. However, not everyone is
convinced that the Gileadean society is how it portrays itself to be. Through storytelling, past
memories, and rebellion, the handmaid Offred is able to escape the reality of Gilead and cease to
completely submit to its repressive culture. Rebellion is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With remembrance of her past she is able to have hope that there possibly could be an end to Gilead
and that her present situation may not have to be a part of her later future. With the storytelling of her
past and present experiences she is able to escape reality by letting out her internal angers and
frustrations. She uses storytelling as an outlet of release and relief from how she is treated in Gilead.
As Atwood states, I ll pretend you can hear me. But it s no good, because I know you can t (40). Even
though she feels as though no one will be able to hear what she is saying about Gilead, she still
continues on storytelling acting like she has an audience because she is able to express and cope with
her feelings by it. She literally can t share her stories while she is in Gilead, but she mentally prepares
them. Just the thought and hope of one day being able to tell her story is enough for her to maintain
sanity throughout Gilead. For example Hansot states from her article that Offred s reviewing of her
past and present is moral and intellectual exercise as well as an exercise in survival (59). She has
something of value to grasp hold to: a story. The possibility of sharing her stories to others and letting
them know what she went through gives her a goal. Her goal gives her the will to survive. In the

The Dunedin Public Art Gallery
The Dunedin Public Art Gallery is currently showcasing the Private Utopia exhibition. It holds 85
works by 25 artists of Contemporary Art from the British Council Collection. The exhibition displays
artistic production from the last two decades, by artists who came to prominence in the mid 1990s and
also emerging artists of the present. Such as Sarah Lucas, Cornelia Parker, Marcus Coates, Laura
Lancaster, Tracey Emin, Roger Hiorns and many more. These artists contribute to the five threads that
are presented in the exhibition. These practises include humour and the uncanny in the everyday,
storytelling and narrative, identity and society, real and imagined landscapes and the appropriation of
styles, subjects and ready made materials. Overall the exhibition prevails a wide range of confronting
and reflective themes. It shows the nature of Modern Art in Britain today and also includes aspects of
music culture, social history and anthropology.
Roger Hiorns prominently contributes to the themes showcased in the Private Utopia exhibition and
demonstrates the broadening definition of what art can be. Hiorns was born in 1975 in Birmingham,
England and currently still lives there. He studied at University of London Goldsmiths College and
Bourneville College of Art. He was also nominated for a Turner Prize in 2009. Hiorns is sculpture and

A Summary Of Bleaching
When it comes to pitching a baseball, there is more to it than what meets the eye. There are different
rules and procedures for left handed than there is for right handed pitchers. The many steps involved
in pitching come together into a fluid motion. There are two types of pitching motions: The windup
and the set. I will explain the steps of a right hander pitching in the windup, which will be the same
steps that the Major League Baseball players use. The first step: Both of the heels start off on the
pitching rubber, while the toes are pointed toward home plate. The pitcher holds the baseball in his
glove throughout this whole process, until the last step. During this, the pitcher s attention is focused
towards the catcher s hand. The catcher

Smoking Cessation in New Zealand
TITLE: SMOKING CESSATION IN NEW ZEALAND
RATIONALE AND AIM
The aim of my proposal is to give valuable information about smoking and smoking cessation in a
presentation that could be helpful to teenagers and pregnant women who want to quit smoking. The
presentation will use simple pictures and language to make it easy for everybody to learn about the
harmful impact of smoking on health. Along with this, there are three key goals of tobacco control
exercises: To lessen the use of smoking, to discontinue smoking, diminishing introduction to a second
hand smoker. In this presentation I will discuss different strategies that are identified to stop smoking,
for example, strategies to stop routine use of smoking in New Zealand, the viability of these strategies,
health related dangers of smoking, the benefits of stopping smoking.
I have chosen this subject because of the fact that it will give helpful information might be to those
individuals who need to stop smoking such as teenagers and pregnant ladies who have a higher risk
from health related issues, moreover passive smokers will additionally get benefit from these methods
and can enable themselves to keep smoke free.
BENEFITS: The main benefit is to the public, such as pregnant women and teenagers, and future
generations. It will help people to improve their financial situation if they quit smoking. Additionally,
it will helpful to pregnant mothers who are not aware about the health related risks and the severity of

Company Infrastructure
Abstract
There are certain benefits in having a well set up and thought out infrastructure within a company.
However when setting up an infrastructure or changing an existing infrastructure there are a number of
things a company should conceder in order to end up with the infrastructure that best works for them
and their company.
Business infrastructures usually consist of booth LAN and WAN area networks. Businesses will use a
LAN to connect network devices over a short distance, such as an office building or school.
Occasionally one building will contain a few small LANs, and sometimes a LAN will span a group of
nearby buildings. LANs are usually owned, controlled, and managed by a single person or ... Show

WAN networks basically connect two or more LAN networks (Woodcock, 1999). There for a
company can benefit from using a WAN network when they have offices in different cities, states, or
countries. It is important for a business to understand how they plan on using LAN and WAN
networks when designing an infrastructure that will work best for them. A business infrastructure is
generally made up of the processes, procedures, and systems within a company. And if a company is
to maintain a competitive edge and stay a step or two ahead of its competitors, it will need to have and
maintain a solid infrastructure. When a company has a solid infrastructure they are more likely to see
an ongoing improvement with the efficiency of their employees (Hughes Kaplan, 2009). This is
because a solid infrastructure allows employees to better communicate and work more effectively. In
order for a company to create or build an infrastructure that will work best for them, there are a few
things in which they should address. One thing they should do is to consult with outside resources and
customers as well as employees in order to determine what type of infrastructure will best address
their company s needs. The company should be sure to define how they would like the infrastructure
to help them in achieving their goals. Find out what it is that their customers need from the business
infrastructure, along with what their employees and management will need for the

Left Ventricular Assist Devices Essay
Introduction
Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) have increased durability and patient survival on the people
who live with heart failure. These devices are mechanical pumps which can work as a bridge to
transplantation or as destination therapy to help the heart to follow its tasks properly. Asgari and
Bonde [1] presented a new totally implantable physiologic left ventricular assist device system in
pulsatile and continuous modes using wireless networks. The authors [1] have proposed a great
contribution to use wireless powering, monitor, communication and control in the field of implantable
control of ventricular assist devices. However, many issues will appear in the result of the proposed
system which needs more investigations in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To investigate the feasibility and implantability of the proposed methodology, the authors tested
physiologic controller in two large female pigs in vivo experiments. The results showed that the
suggested controller (UMC Physio), consumes less power compared with the HeartMate II (axial
pump) controller and HeartWare (centrifugal pump) ventricular assist device controller.
Critique
The system presented wireless network for monitor, communication, control and powering of the left
ventricular assist device systems which is a novel and significant research for LVADs implantation [1].
However, if there are not internet access and wireless network (via smartphone) at the same time due
to malfunction in antenna or network, limitation in range and other issues, the proposed system will
fail to monitor and control the LVAD in patients, and therefore it will result in dangerous conditions or
death.
Wireless connections have harmful effects on the health of people and especially on blood, the heart,
and the autonomic nervous system when the radiation is continuous and long term [2]. Therefore, it is
recommended to reduce electrosmog exposure and prevent wireless networks for communication,
monitor, control and powering of the LVADs.
Although the main aim of the research published by Asgari and Bonde was to propose a wireless
method for LVAD systems, it is not acceptable that the author did not compare proposed controller
with the other famous methods such as preload based

Good vs. Evil
Good Vs. Evil
In Beowulf, the conflict between good and evil is the poem s main and most important aspect. The
poet makes it clear that good and evil doesn t exist as only opposites, but that both qualities are
present in everyone. Beowulf represents the ability to do good or to perform acts selflessly and in help
of others. Goodness is also showed throughout this epic as having the ability to cleanse evil. Even
though evil is presented by Grendel, Grendel s mother, and the dragon, who are filled with a desire to
act against people and ultimately destroy them, even pride, a human quality, is presented in Beowulf
as a sign that evil exists. This story might even be considered a classic because it mainly talks about
the old fashion ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He often talked about his accomplishments saying, They had seen me bolstered in the blood of
enemies when I battled and bound five beasts, raided a troll nest and in the night sea slaughtered sea
brutes. (Beowulf 419 422), which shows how good can also be a bit proud. In the end, though, most of
the time good will always defeat evil but good won t always stay alive. For example, in the end of
Beowulf, although Grendel was killed by Beowulf as well as his mother, Beowulf still dies. In other
words, just because evil is defeated doesn t mean good will always live.
On a different but similar note, is Grendel s mother, who is seen as vengeful. Different, because she
isn t the same type of evil that Grendel is, but similar because she is still an opponent to both men and
the society of man at the time that Beowulf was written, or rather, spoken. Also, Grendel s mother is
tainted in the opposite way that Grendel is; while Grendel is given a humanistic point of view, people
try to dehumanize Grendel s mother. While she is indeed just as evil as Grendel was, she does not
represent the utter evil that man must fight to achieve immortality. She is a symbol of defiance of man,
but she can be seen as more of a neutral symbol. Grendel s mother doesn t attack Heorot because she
doesn t like it. She attacks it because Beowulf killed her only son, But now his mother had sallied
forth on a savage journey, grief racked and

The Myths Of Rising College Cost
Tuition charges have increased by a national average of 20% between 2008 and 2012 (Hiltonsmith
Draut, 2014). Higher education stakeholders, such as students, parents, public policy makers, have
expressed their worries about the rising tuition as it has triggered a public concern about college
affordability (Mumper Freeman, 2011). For public colleges and universities, it was the first time that
they have witnessed that tuition as a share of total revenue surpasses the state funding for public
institutions nationwide in 2012 (U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2013). It imposes challenges
to public higher education institutions to shift their dependence of revenue from state appropriations to
tuition and other sources (Mulhern, Spies, Staiger Wu, 2015).
A number of researches have investigate the myths of rising college cost (Archibald Feldman, 2012;
Baumol, 1995; Bowen, 1980; Douglas Keeling, 2008; Heller, 2011; Martin, 2011; Mumper Freeman,
2011). In summary, the major factors that attribute to the rising college cost are: (1) the decline in state
financial support for public higher education with the increasing support for other items (Mumper
Freeman, 2011); (2) higher education institutions set their goals to be academic excellence, prestige,
and influence. To achieve these goals, they tend to generate revenue source and there is no limit for
the money they can generate. So they raise all the money they can and spend all the money they
raised. Raising

The first task was to create a sequential film. The idea of this incredibly daunting as I had next to no

Adobe Premier in an induction , I still didn t feel very confident. This is where I got the idea for stop

observational drawing, historical information and taking photographs. This helped me really

Internal System Controls And Application Controls Essay
Internal System Controls
Introduction
Today, businesses rely mostly on technology. However, there are risks that business information
systems face such as human input errors, transaction or data input that is unsuitably permitted prior to
data input, and input controls that do not offer assurance that all transactions that are initially caught
and recorded; these risks are all categorized as data origin risks. Business organizations combat this
and other risks using General Controls and Application Controls. Please keep reading to find out what
this controls are and how they are used, as well as learn about other risks that business face and their
respective classes.
1. General Controls
General Controls consist of implementation controls, software controls, hardware controls, computer
operations controls, data security controls and administrative controls. These controls ensure that
approved user involvement as well as exact procedures and standards are followed, controlled and are
properly managed to secure physical and electronic data1.
2. Application Controls
Application specific controls include data origin, data input, data processing and data output controls.
These controls ensure accuracy, completeness, validation, tracking and proper reliable distribution of
data is attained in an organizational environment. Other application controls are application access,
audit trail and documentation controls; that ensure controlled segregated access to documentation and
data.

The Darkness Of The Night
The slightly built woman dreaded the advancing darkness of the night as she stood solemnly by the
window, staring, but not actually seeing the rolling green hills of the Appalachian Mountains. Their
peaks dominated the landscape, rising high above the treetops. How she would love to escape over
their crests never to return.
In the distance, an encroaching curtain of gloom had begun to fall across the countryside. Lightning
bolts flashed brilliantly across the sky briefly brightening the room, as the loud rumble of thunder
shook the windows.
The damp air from the approaching rain blew through the open window and hung in the room with
humid, oppressive tension, bringing the potential for chaos along with a cleansing relief from the
relentless summer heat.
Worry and doubt cast a burden on her heart as the setting sun slowly seeped into the earth, drawing her
ever closer to despair.
Uneasy fingers ruffled through light brown hair, which flowed in long waves to her waist. Beautiful,
tear filled violet eyes reflected an intensity that was rare in someone so young.
One hand reached up hastily wiping a tear from her rosy cheek where a smattering of faint freckles ran
randomly across the bridge of her nose.
The bleakness of the threatening thunderclouds, chasing across the evening sky, matched the depth of
her encompassing depression.
It was Friday, and the coal miners would be converging on the local merchants to spend the small
amount of cash they received each week. The

Language In Rabbit Proof Fence
Rabbit Proof Fence is a movie directed by Phillip Noyce based on the novel by Doris Pilkington
Garimara. In the excerpt, The Stealing of Children, it shows the offspring of the indigenous people
being taken away from their parents as the white settlers thought they weren t being treated properly.
Events like these occurred from 1910 1970 in Australia s history. Many aboriginal children didn t want
to be taken away and the fictional story, based on real events, of Rabbit Proof Fence has been created
from the point of view of those people living at this time. The director has created many
representations of Aboriginal people through the use of language features, visual elements and the
audio components.
The language features of The Stealing of Children give many representations of the indigenous
people. One of these devices is repetition. Once the aboriginals were trapped by Constable Riggs,
Maude repeatedly shouted the word, No! . While he took the children, she continued to state that they
were hers and she didn t like him taking them. Her repetitiveness gave the impression that she didn t
want to lose her kids and that she loved them. This also gave the impression that Maude had no
authority against Riggs. Another language element featured in the film is evocative vocabulary. It was
used among the shouts of the indigenous people and the police man. When the Grandmother came to
the car with a large stick, which she may have used to try and break the car windows,

Description Of A Website On A Webpage Essay
Archiving
When testing if a webpage is archived and how often is it archived one important factor is when is the
webpage created. If a webpage is created in 2000 we would assume it will be archived several times.
However, if the webpage is created yesterday we would assume it might not be archived or at least
once. So here we want to figure out the creation date of our collection and make sure we have a
different variety of creation years.
One method to determine when the URIs are created is to find out when was the domain name created.
This can be done using the Whois protocol [14]. However, using this method we only found 3533
creation date out of 7976 Arabic seed URIs . The oldest creation date we found using this method in
our collection of Aranic seed URIs was 1996.
Another method is the carbon date tool, it searches for creation date in the indexed search engines,
archived in the public archives, and shared in the social media and save the oldest date found as the
creation date. We have to note that creation dates obtained are just an estimate [15].
Figure 3 shows the creation date and its frequency. It shows we have a large distribution of creation
dates. And the maximum creation date was in 2005 where almost 500 websites are created.
ARCHIVE
Online websites are crawled and are archived so they can be available for any special purpose [16].
We checked if Arabic URIs are archived using the memento web time map. We collected the datetime

Review of Exhibitions
Q1. Sending back 1,000 paid registration fees is not feasible, and would create negative publicity
about the event in the media. However, it is impossible to allow the convention center to become a fire
hazard due to overcapacity, and were an incident to occur, the publicity would even be more negative,
if someone were injured (such as if there was a fire and the building could not be evacuated in a
timely fashion). Instead, using satellite venues to cater to certain aspects of the expo would be advised.
Using the exterior space outside of the convention hall to house some of the events would balance the
number of individuals on the exterior and interior of the structure. Even if inclement weather were to
occur, tents could be used to stage some of the attractions of interest. All of the different vendors and
events would be reviewed, to see which would work better in tents versus in the hall. For example, a
yoga class would likely have to be staged indoors, because of its size. However, a vendor handing out
pamphlets and talking about holistic nutrition could be confined to a smaller booth. This would
maximize the happiness of both the attendees and the client. The client would be happy that all of the
events were staged, and none of the attendance fees were returned. There would be no unhappy,
disgruntled want to be conference goers who had bad feelings because their money was returned. And
finally, the event itself might be enhanced by being more spread out and using

Satire Environmental Problems
Satire is the use of humor, irony, hyperbole, and other forms of figurative language to convey a belief
or an idea. Articles that are non satirical typically center around fact and highlight what is actually
happening without the use of figurative language. Environmental problems are becoming increasingly
prevalent in society today and people frequently express them using both satirical and non satirical
means. With this ever increasing volume of environmental problems beginning to damage the
environment more and more, individuals are seeking to repair the environment. Due to this
exponential increase of harm to the environment, individuals will have to put in more effort in order to
come to a solution that will mitigate the largest damage to the environment. In order to solve these
problems, the problems have to be wholly understood, and the attention of individuals that can
actually do something to solve these problems needs to be reached.Satirical and non satirical means of
expressing these environmental problems will be evaluated in their effectiveness to see which method
is better for conveying these issues. The problems centering around the desolation of the environment

The computer system being a machine can perform mathematical calculations in the best possible
way. These are equipped with all kinds of performance ability ranging from simple addition
subtraction to square root and from the trigonometry to word problems. However, there is always a
proper form required when it comes to visual basic.
The format you may be required to follow when performing calculations you must follow the below
given layout in visual basic, however, divisions and multiplication are performed first and when both
are present calculation starts from left side.

Console.WriteLine(30 / 2 * 3) Console.ReadLine()
The answers to the above given equations may vary depending upon if the brackets are given or not
since the meaning and technicality of calculation changes.
When it comes to division the following code is required to be followed:

The Issue Of Revitalization In Newark
Newark is going through a time of revitalization, not gentrification. These new companies create new
job opportunities for the thousands of unemployed residents. There are also many empty acres of land
to construct buildings on, so there won t be a problem about displacement. However, in some parts of
Newark, the issue of racial tension is rising. The upgrading that s taking place in Newark is to support
the need of the residents and decrease many issues occurring in our society. Up to 2000 Newark
residents are unemployed due to factors such as age and education level. This process of revitalization
in Newark can bring a huge decrease to the number of unemployed residents. After reading the article

Some may object that the changes occurring in Newark are signs of gentrification, and not
revitalization. Gentrification is merely the act of changing the society and sometimes even displacing
residents, resulting in isolation and depression. The reason why some people believe that
gentrification is taking place in Newark is because of the racial tension. In the article A Revival in
Newark, but some worry it Not For Us , it is written that Newark s new chapter also has a racial tinge:
The city has been dominated by its large African American population after decades of white residents
leaving for the suburbs, but many of the people drawn by the city s resurgence are white. Although
most of Newark is populated by African Americans, many whites are appealed by our city s renewal
by making our community better. This statement may include how different races/ethnicities are
attracted to Newark, but it doesn t mention how families get isolated because of the changes in the
society. Because of this important detail, it makes a clear difference that Newark is going through
revitalization. Because of the fine line between, revitalization and

Grotesque In Winesburg, Ohio
The word grotesque describes a person who develops bizarre traits as a result of emotional problems.
This similar characteristic among people of different stories yet familiar sufferings develop an
underlying trend in the community. The handling of their emotional trauma makes these characters
grotesque because they develop a new perspective of life and reflect the past, present, and future. As
reporter George Willard interacts with individuals in Sherwood Anderson s Winesburg, Ohio, Willard
is exposed to the grotesques and their stories that changed their outlook on life forever. In the book,
the stories concerning characters Jesse Bentley, Alice Hindman, and Enoch Robinson exemplify the
development of a grotesque individual as a result of traumatic incidents. Jesse Bentley is a changed
man because of the incident regarding the relationship with him and his daughter s son, David Hardy.

Fourteenth Amendment Case Study
Alabama s state constitution calls for a reapportionment every ten years. But, in 1961 the state had not
been reapportioned since 1901. This upset many Alabama residents. Roughly one fourth of the state s
population could vote for the majority of the state senators and representatives. Finally, M.O. Sims
and many other residents of Jefferson County, Alabama challenged the apportionment of the state
legislature. They sued state officials in federal district court stating that this malapportionment denied
them equal voting rights. They believed that this imbalance diluted their votes. They argued that some
ratios of people to legislatures were as high as fourteen to one in senate districts and up to sixteen to
one in the lower house. The district court agreed with Sims. They ruled that his Fourteenth
Amendment equal protection rights were being violated. The district court demanded that the state to
draw up new apportionment plans as soon as possible. Alabama s legislature came up with two
different apportionment plans; however, neither of the two plans were based on strictly population.
Consequently, the district court declared them both unconstitutional. In response, B.A. Reynolds ...

Problems Associated With Poor Time Management For Students
Introduction Time management is an essential aspect that the students must learn in order to achieve
their goals and build their career. The skills of time management initially provide a relief from the
stress as well as later helps the students to be focused towards their targets as well as their
performance for achieving the targets. Thus, if the students are not able to manage their time
effectively, then there may arise various issues in their personal as well as academic life (Michael). In
the same essence, the report is focused on exploring the problems associated with poor time
management for students. In addition to this, the cause of poor time management regarding issues are
also evaluated in the report. Furthermore, the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This ultimately results in poor quality outcomes that are not able to meet the academic requirements,
and lower overall grades (Liu et al.). This increased workload has a severe impact on the physical as
well as mental health of the students. The heavy workload leads to students spending extended time
sitting in front of the computer screens to search for the necessary data and address the assignment
requirements. This has implications for the health of the students, impacting the vital bodily functions
due to longer sitting. High exposure to screens also influences the eyes of the students, influencing
their vision quality and interfering with the natural sleep cycle (Thorp et al.; Hale, and Guan). In
addition to this, the students can potentially suffer from mental health issues, such as stress. Therefore,
poor time management can seriously impact the physical and mental health of the students.
Causes of Poor Time Management Related Issues One of the biggest causes for the poor time
management among students is the tendency to procrastinate until the last possible moment. There
may be multiple reasons for procrastination, but it ultimately results in intense work for long stretches
to meet the necessary deadlines. It is often argued that the majority of the students work better under
pressure of deadlines, and therefore tend to procrastinate (The McGraw Center for Teaching
Learning). However, it can also lead to the problems

Cultural Mobility In America
In the United States, there were many immigrants, and there were opportunities to get jobs for
immigrants. Therefore, many immigrants believed that they spend better life in the U.S. than they
spend life in the home country. It is very important that cultural and social mobility increase in
citizens, especially poor people, and I foresee a time when I will be economically mobile for several
reasons.
Cultural mobility is closely related to people s life. Cultural mobility provides entrance to various
institutions, goods, services, and practices (Beato 350). Nowadays, cultural mobility is increasing in
the U.S. because technology is developing, and technology development helps to improve cultural

In the United States, in the past, social mobility was low, so poor people were not able to move out of
poverty. For example, a poor parents child becomes a poor adult because parents do not have enough
money for a child s education. Likewise, A child born into a low income home hears 30 million fewer
words than a child from a well off family (Obama 342). As a result, a child is not educated, and a child
cannot get a job that earns an average income, so this awful cycle continues. However, some
presidents solved social issues for poor people. Abraham Lincoln started a system of land grant
colleges all over this country so that any poor man s son could go learn something new (Obama 339).
Also, When millions died without health insurance, LBJ fought for Medicare and Medicaid (Obama
339). Therefore, social mobility started to increase. Some new jobs appeared, and it also helped to
increase social mobility. As a result, citizens life became better and better. People call this
environment the American Dream. The American dream is that if you work hard, you have a chance to
get achieve (Obama 338).
However, Barack Obama argues that social mobility is decreasing recently. Also, Decreasing mobility
poses a fundamental threat to the American dream (Obama 341). He thinks the American Dream is
disappearing. However, Obama s argument is not correct because social mobility is increasing bit by
bit. Two Harvard economists, two Berkeley economists, and one U.S. Treasury economist failed to
find decreasing economic mobility (Beato 349). For example, people s average income is higher than
before generation s average income, so the American Dream is not

characters share the personality trait of passion, as, upon learning of the apparent deaths of their

Annotated Bibliography Of Borderlands
Julia Glandt October 24, 2017 Borderlands FYS Annotated Bibliography They had no life; they were
not allowed to have a life. They were isolated from not only the white race but also their own people.
Mr. Michael Reed was one of those slave owners that treated his slaves that they were nothing more
than a piece of property. In his files, Mr. Reed had a ledger of daily activities. This ledger contained
hourly and daily record of everything his slaves would do. In some of his recordings, Mr. Reed would
write down very strange things for what activity his slaves were doing. He would make mention when
they were sick, of course so he could know how many hours they worked; but many of his recording
were not appropriate for him to be writing. He acted almost as if a lion stalking its prey before it killed
them, minus the killing. If his slaves went to the restroom, he would repeatedly write that or the word
nothing if he felt that they were not contributing to work on the plantations. By Reed doing this to his
slaves, he isolated them to not allow for them to have any outside contact. He silenced his slaves from
feeling like humans. Being trapped in this isolation dehumanized the slaves by treating them as more
of a research project/business rather than actual people, even though they were never thought of as
people at the time. The treatment these individuals reported ran the gamut from the most harsh,
impersonal, and exploitative to work and living conditions and environments

Jonathan Swift s Literary Canon Of Politically And...
Thesis Statement: Jonathan Swift s literary canon of politically and comically prolific satires,
fantasies, and allegories was seasoned with his exposure to the follies of the economic, religious and
governing institutions of the British Empire, and thus, he sought to lampoon and caricature the current
events and social, cultural, religious, and political trends that were so omnipotent during his lifetime.
Swift s exposure to the monarchical mentality and rife factional conflicts pervading the political sector
of England influenced a number of his literary works. A. In 1710, Swift, disgusted with their alliance
with the Dissenters, withdrew from the Whigs, aligned himself with the Tories, and took up the
position of editor of the Tory newspaper The Examiner (Cody). But Swift did not thereby renounce his
essentially Whiggish convictions regarding the nature of government. The old Tory theory of the
divine right of kings had no claim upon him. The ultimate power, he insisted, derived from the people
as a whole and, in the English constitution, had come to be exercised jointly by king, lords, and
commons (Quintana). Through his many articles and pamphlets that were written in defense of Tory
policies, Swift became one of the most effective spokespersons of any British administration. With the
death of Queen Anne in August 1714 and the accession of George I, the Tories were a ruined party,
and Swift s career in England was at an end. When Swift was writing Gulliver s

Thomas Gray s Eligy Indited in a Country Churchyard
Thomas Gray indited a poem that compares to other poems on prodigious levels of kindred attribute,
with some differences. The structure of Elegy Indited in a Country Churchyard is homogeneous to the
four line stanzas of other poetry encountered throughout this semester. Gray utilizes a homogeneous
theme of time in his poem, likewise in Shakespeare s sonnets and Donne s The Ecstasy . Gray s
purport of imagery differs drastically from other poets. To commence, structure is the first thing to
descry while comparing Gray s Elegy to other poems. Gray indites in heroic quatrains, four line
stanzas with an iambic pentameter. Iambic pentameter is the designation given to a line of verse that

Shakespeare seems absorbed in physical resplendency when reading Sonnet Nineteen. His aperture
line, Devouring time... time is eating up all of earth s creatures. All of the resplendency is eaten up by
time. Gray utilizes the theme of time by imaging what the mundane man of this country churchyard
did during their life. Instead of being upset about time passing, glomming resplendency within the
world, and not capitalizing on the time given to us, Gray is appreciating the time the deceased has had.
For them no more the blazing hearth shall burn, / or diligent housewife ply her evening care: / no
children run to lisp their sire s return, / or climb his knees the envied kiss to apportion. Here, Gray is
reminiscing the times a certain man might return home and appreciating the affection of his family.
Other poets might visually perceive time as an exasperation; Gray optically discerns it as a treasure to
be cherished. When comparing Gray s Elegy to John Milton s Lyciads , we discover a drastic
difference. Both men indited in replication to a death of their friend. Gray s poem reflected mental
conceptions of the past lives of the mundane people found within the country churchyard. He is asking
us to accolade the lives of the people he has discovered in this graveyard. Gray develops relationships
between these dead and nature. In stanza seven, Oft did the harvest to their sickle yield, / Their furrow

The Song This Jesus Must Die
Musicals are a living form of art. A musical combines dance, dialogue, characters, music, costumes
and vocals in order to represent a moral issue. Some appear at the forefront of the plot while others are
presented alongside the storyline. A fitting example of a musical, is Jesus Christ Superstar composed
by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This musical is perfect as it is entirely sung, has amazing rock music and
has themes and moral issues carefully intertwine throughout the plot. However, the largest moral issue
or dilemma is how popularity can negatively and positively affect the main character Jesus.
The song This Jesus must Die is an excellent example of the negative side of popularity, as it shows
the Romans planning to kill Jesus before he surpasses them in power. The song begins with a
moderate tempo of 72bpm in a time signature of 4/4. However, the use of semibreves and the organ
slows the perceived tempo, giving the score a ghostly and ominous feel (seen in bars 1 13 and figure 1
and 2). This ominous feel is throughout these bars, as it represents the tension between Jesus s power
and the Roman authority. This also clearly sets up the roman s character, as a dominating evil force.

Environmental Factors And Causes Of Climate Change In Kenya
Climate change in today s world has become of great concern due to its effects on the environment.
Globally, climate change has significantly influenced ecosystems and the existence of organisms. This
is further extending its effects to regional areas such as Kenya, whose ecosystem is not spared by the
changing climate. Despite having natural causes, Anthropogenic factors are widely increasing and
causing climate change undisputed. Therefore, human activities are the primary contributors to climate
change leading to stress and ecosystem strain, to continue providing for its services. In this report, I
discuss the summary of global climate change and regional focus on causes of climate change in
Kenya, its effects in ecosystem especially on the natural ecosystems, current measures to curb the
effects and the perception of the future ecosystem of the country.
Introduction
Climate change is defined as a change of climate that is attributed directly or indirectly to human
activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere, and that is in addition to natural climate
variability observed over comparable time periods (UNFCC, 1992). (source(GoK, 2012). Which is
understood as the average change in weather patterns over an extended period, caused by both human
activities and natural factors. These factors include deforestation from increasing human population
and activities, industrialization, urbanization, volcanic eruptions, etc. These events lead to excess

Persuasive Essay On Juveniles
Elizabeth Alexander had nearly fallen asleep one ___ night in 2016 when she was jostled awake by a
firecracker of a noise. She noticed an unusually bright orange light, which she at first thought it was a
street light beaming through a starless Selma sky. She soon realized it was instead her car, engulfed in
radiant flames. One of the only items she owned was being taken from her, and she could do nothing
about it. She sat in awe and disbelief, a moment of euphoria that would set her life on an unexpected
journey. Until that point, Alexander had lived her life as a rebel, a badge she wore proudly after years
of internal turmoil. She spent time in foster care as a child, since her diabetic mother was in and out of
the hospital and could not always care for her three children. While there, Alexander was sexually
abused by older girls in the system. In school, she was bullied. All of these environmental elements
led to creating Alexander s tough girl persona as a child. I was a fighter. I would fight you, it didn t
matter who you were, because I got picked on so much that it became my defense, Alexander said.
Alexander, now 24, has been arrested once for every year of her life. The majority of the arrests
occurred when she was a juvenile, and most were for disorderly conduct. A locked up life is not a
hopeful one. But for the first time, as Alexander watched her livelihood disappear into the midnight

Almost every aspect of their lives is controlled; they are not allowed to read, write, or even speak freely. Any type of expression would be dangerous to the order of the Gilead s strict society, but the handmaids are conditioned to believe that they are safer and better off living there. With remembrance of her past she is able to have hope that there possibly could be an end to Gilead and that her present situation may not have to be a part of her later future. With the storytelling of her past and present experiences she is able to escape reality by letting out her internal angers and frustrations. She uses storytelling as an outlet of release and relief from how she is treated in Gilead. As Atwood states, I ll pretend you can hear me. But it s no good, because I know you can t (40). For example Hansot states from her article that Offred s reviewing of her past and present is moral and intellectual exercise as well as an exercise in survival (59). She has something of value to grasp hold to: a story. The possibility of sharing her stories to others and letting them know what she went through gives her a goal. Her goal gives her the will to survive. In the Historical Notes part ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. Left Ventricular Assist Devices Essay Introduction Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs) have increased durability and patient survival on the people who live with heart failure. These devices are mechanical pumps which can work as a bridge to transplantation or as destination therapy to help the heart to follow its tasks properly. Asgari and Bonde [1] presented a new totally implantable physiologic left ventricular assist device system in pulsatile and continuous modes using wireless networks. The authors [1] have proposed a great contribution to use wireless powering, monitor, communication and control in the field of implantable control of ventricular assist devices. However, many issues will appear in the result of the proposed system which needs more investigations in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To investigate the feasibility and implantability of the proposed methodology, the authors tested physiologic controller in two large female pigs in vivo experiments. The results showed that the suggested controller (UMC Physio), consumes less power compared with the HeartMate II (axial pump) controller and HeartWare (centrifugal pump) ventricular assist device controller. Critique The system presented wireless network for monitor, communication, control and powering of the left ventricular assist device systems which is a novel and significant research for LVADs implantation [1]. However, if there are not internet access and wireless network (via smartphone) at the same time due to malfunction in antenna or network, limitation in range and other issues, the proposed system will fail to monitor and control the LVAD in patients, and therefore it will result in dangerous conditions or death. Wireless connections have harmful effects on the health of people and especially on blood, the heart, and the autonomic nervous system when the radiation is continuous and long term [2]. Therefore, it is recommended to reduce electrosmog exposure and prevent wireless networks for communication, monitor, control and powering of the LVADs. Although the main aim of the research published by Asgari and Bonde was to propose a wireless method for LVAD systems, it is not acceptable that the author did not compare proposed controller with the other famous methods such as preload based ... • 11. Good vs. Evil Good Vs. Evil In Beowulf, the conflict between good and evil is the poem s main and most important aspect. The poet makes it clear that good and evil doesn t exist as only opposites, but that both qualities are present in everyone. Beowulf represents the ability to do good or to perform acts selflessly and in help of others. Goodness is also showed throughout this epic as having the ability to cleanse evil. Even though evil is presented by Grendel, Grendel s mother, and the dragon, who are filled with a desire to act against people and ultimately destroy them, even pride, a human quality, is presented in Beowulf as a sign that evil exists. He often talked about his accomplishments saying, They had seen me bolstered in the blood of enemies when I battled and bound five beasts, raided a troll nest and in the night sea slaughtered sea brutes. (Beowulf 419 422), which shows how good can also be a bit proud. In the end, though, most of the time good will always defeat evil but good won t always stay alive. For example, in the end of Beowulf, although Grendel was killed by Beowulf as well as his mother, Beowulf still dies. In other words, just because evil is defeated doesn t mean good will always live. On a different but similar note, is Grendel s mother, who is seen as vengeful. Different, because she isn t the same type of evil that Grendel is, but similar because she is still an opponent to both men and the society of man at the time that Beowulf was written, or rather, spoken. Also, Grendel s mother is tainted in the opposite way that Grendel is; while Grendel is given a humanistic point of view, people try to dehumanize Grendel s mother. While she is indeed just as evil as Grendel was, she does not represent the utter evil that man must fight to achieve immortality. She is a symbol of defiance of man, but she can be seen as more of a neutral symbol. Grendel s mother doesn t attack Heorot because she doesn t like it. She attacks it because Beowulf killed her only son, But now his mother had sallied forth on a savage journey, grief racked and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. The Myths Of Rising College Cost Tuition charges have increased by a national average of 20% between 2008 and 2012 (Hiltonsmith Draut, 2014). Higher education stakeholders, such as students, parents, public policy makers, have expressed their worries about the rising tuition as it has triggered a public concern about college affordability (Mumper Freeman, 2011). For public colleges and universities, it was the first time that they have witnessed that tuition as a share of total revenue surpasses the state funding for public institutions nationwide in 2012 (U.S. Government Accountability Office, 2013). It imposes challenges to public higher education institutions to shift their dependence of revenue from state appropriations to tuition and other sources (Mulhern, Spies, Staiger Wu, 2015). A number of researches have investigate the myths of rising college cost (Archibald Feldman, 2012; Baumol, 1995; Bowen, 1980; Douglas Keeling, 2008; Heller, 2011; Martin, 2011; Mumper Freeman, 2011). In summary, the major factors that attribute to the rising college cost are: (1) the decline in state financial support for public higher education with the increasing support for other items (Mumper Freeman, 2011); (2) higher education institutions set their goals to be academic excellence, prestige, and influence. To achieve these goals, they tend to generate revenue source and there is no limit for the money they can generate. So they raise all the money they can and spend all the money they raised. The Darkness Of The Night The slightly built woman dreaded the advancing darkness of the night as she stood solemnly by the window, staring, but not actually seeing the rolling green hills of the Appalachian Mountains. Their peaks dominated the landscape, rising high above the treetops. How she would love to escape over their crests never to return. In the distance, an encroaching curtain of gloom had begun to fall across the countryside. Lightning bolts flashed brilliantly across the sky briefly brightening the room, as the loud rumble of thunder shook the windows. The damp air from the approaching rain blew through the open window and hung in the room with humid, oppressive tension, bringing the potential for chaos along with a cleansing relief from the relentless summer heat. Worry and doubt cast a burden on her heart as the setting sun slowly seeped into the earth, drawing her ever closer to despair. Uneasy fingers ruffled through light brown hair, which flowed in long waves to her waist. Beautiful, tear filled violet eyes reflected an intensity that was rare in someone so young. One hand reached up hastily wiping a tear from her rosy cheek where a smattering of faint freckles ran randomly across the bridge of her nose. • 17. Language In Rabbit Proof Fence Rabbit Proof Fence is a movie directed by Phillip Noyce based on the novel by Doris Pilkington Garimara. In the excerpt, The Stealing of Children, it shows the offspring of the indigenous people being taken away from their parents as the white settlers thought they weren t being treated properly. Events like these occurred from 1910 1970 in Australia s history. Many aboriginal children didn t want to be taken away and the fictional story, based on real events, of Rabbit Proof Fence has been created from the point of view of those people living at this time. The director has created many representations of Aboriginal people through the use of language features, visual elements and the audio components. The language features of The Stealing of Children give many representations of the indigenous people. One of these devices is repetition. Once the aboriginals were trapped by Constable Riggs, Maude repeatedly shouted the word, No! . While he took the children, she continued to state that they were hers and she didn t like him taking them. Her repetitiveness gave the impression that she didn t want to lose her kids and that she loved them. This also gave the impression that Maude had no authority against Riggs. Another language element featured in the film is evocative vocabulary. It was used among the shouts of the indigenous people and the police man. However, it is impossible to allow the convention center to become a fire hazard due to overcapacity, and were an incident to occur, the publicity would even be more negative, if someone were injured (such as if there was a fire and the building could not be evacuated in a timely fashion). Instead, using satellite venues to cater to certain aspects of the expo would be advised. Using the exterior space outside of the convention hall to house some of the events would balance the number of individuals on the exterior and interior of the structure. Even if inclement weather were to occur, tents could be used to stage some of the attractions of interest. All of the different vendors and events would be reviewed, to see which would work better in tents versus in the hall. For example, a yoga class would likely have to be staged indoors, because of its size. However, a vendor handing out pamphlets and talking about holistic nutrition could be confined to a smaller booth. This would maximize the happiness of both the attendees and the client. The client would be happy that all of the events were staged, and none of the attendance fees were returned. However, Obama s argument is not correct because social mobility is increasing bit by bit. Two Harvard economists, two Berkeley economists, and one U.S. Treasury economist failed to find decreasing economic mobility (Beato 349). • 30. Maria And Tony Just as Romeo finds himself in love with a girl from his enemy s family, so too does Tony. Both characters must decide between their love for their girlfriends and their loyalty to their groups, and both find themselves in fatal situations because of this inner conflict, Romeo committing suicide after discovering Juliet s seemingly dead body and Tony being killed by revealing his whereabouts to Chino in his emotional state after hearing the false news of Maria s death. This also reveals that the two characters share the personality trait of passion, as, upon learning of the apparent deaths of their lovers, they abandon all regard for personal safety and make the decision that they would rather die than live without them. Similarly, Juliet and Maria are analogous to each other for many of the same reasons: both are members of one feuding group who ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within the ardor driven lives of Romeo and Juliet and Tony and Maria, Friar Laurence and Doc are often the only ones acting as the voice of reason. Unlike the lovers, who display their affection for each other by being romantic and sentimental, the two old men display a different kind of love a parental love by genuinely looking out for the young couples and what s best for them, offering their wisdom even when the headstrong teenagers resent it. Though the situations of Romeo and Juliet and Tony and Maria have slightly different results (Romeo and Juliet both committing suicide and Tony being killed while Maria survives), the repercussions of their tragic romances are much the same. In the end, the hatred between the feuding parties is forgotten, with both groups finally coming together over the deaths of their own members. We decided that we would go to Albert Pike and swim, since I live a few minutes from Albert Pike, we got my mom s okay to ride up there on our bikes. Under one condition, said my mom. They are very slick this time of year, I know, as I rolled my eyes not listening. I did not know that this tiny white lie could change the way others look at me forever. Moments went by, as we started off on our journey to Albert Pike. With the roads being very curvy, we were very precise about how sharp we turned every curve, and making sure to watch for upcoming cars. Our bikes screeched as we arrived pulling up to the swimming area. There was very meager up there, like I had suspected. Later on, after swimming for about twenty minutes, we started to climb around on the few rocks where there were diminutive waterfalls, and tide pools. Some of the rocks were higher than others, and some had deep gaps in between. We tried to make sure that we were careful, but there must have been one rock that was as slick as ... • 33. Annotated Bibliography Of Borderlands Julia Glandt October 24, 2017 Borderlands FYS Annotated Bibliography They had no life; they were not allowed to have a life. They were isolated from not only the white race but also their own people. Mr. Michael Reed was one of those slave owners that treated his slaves that they were nothing more than a piece of property. In his files, Mr. Reed had a ledger of daily activities. This ledger contained hourly and daily record of everything his slaves would do. In some of his recordings, Mr. Reed would write down very strange things for what activity his slaves were doing. He would make mention when they were sick, of course so he could know how many hours they worked; but many of his recording were not appropriate for him to be writing. He acted almost as if a lion stalking its prey before it killed them, minus the killing. If his slaves went to the restroom, he would repeatedly write that or the word nothing if he felt that they were not contributing to work on the plantations. By Reed doing this to his slaves, he isolated them to not allow for them to have any outside contact. He silenced his slaves from feeling like humans. Being trapped in this isolation dehumanized the slaves by treating them as more of a research project/business rather than actual people, even though they were never thought of as people at the time. The treatment these individuals reported ran the gamut from the most harsh, impersonal, and exploitative to work and living conditions and environments ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Jonathan Swift s Literary Canon Of Politically And... Thesis Statement: Jonathan Swift s literary canon of politically and comically prolific satires, fantasies, and allegories was seasoned with his exposure to the follies of the economic, religious and governing institutions of the British Empire, and thus, he sought to lampoon and caricature the current events and social, cultural, religious, and political trends that were so omnipotent during his lifetime. Swift s exposure to the monarchical mentality and rife factional conflicts pervading the political sector of England influenced a number of his literary works. A. In 1710, Swift, disgusted with their alliance with the Dissenters, withdrew from the Whigs, aligned himself with the Tories, and took up the position of editor of the Tory newspaper The Examiner (Cody). But Swift did not thereby renounce his essentially Whiggish convictions regarding the nature of government. The old Tory theory of the divine right of kings had no claim upon him. The ultimate power, he insisted, derived from the people as a whole and, in the English constitution, had come to be exercised jointly by king, lords, and commons (Quintana). Through his many articles and pamphlets that were written in defense of Tory policies, Swift became one of the most effective spokespersons of any British administration. With the death of Queen Anne in August 1714 and the accession of George I, the Tories were a ruined party, and Swift s career in England was at an end. When Swift was writing Gulliver s ... The structure of Elegy Indited in a Country Churchyard is homogeneous to the four line stanzas of other poetry encountered throughout this semester. Gray utilizes a homogeneous theme of time in his poem, likewise in Shakespeare s sonnets and Donne s The Ecstasy . Gray s purport of imagery differs drastically from other poets. To commence, structure is the first thing to descry while comparing Gray s Elegy to other poems. Gray indites in heroic quatrains, four line stanzas with an iambic pentameter. Shakespeare seems absorbed in physical resplendency when reading Sonnet Nineteen. His aperture line, Devouring time... time is eating up all of earth s creatures. All of the resplendency is eaten up by time. Gray utilizes the theme of time by imaging what the mundane man of this country churchyard did during their life. Instead of being upset about time passing, glomming resplendency within the world, and not capitalizing on the time given to us, Gray is appreciating the time the deceased has had. For them no more the blazing hearth shall burn, / or diligent housewife ply her evening care: / no children run to lisp their sire s return, / or climb his knees the envied kiss to apportion. Here, Gray is reminiscing the times a certain man might return home and appreciating the affection of his family. Other poets might visually perceive time as an exasperation; Gray optically discerns it as a treasure to be cherished. When comparing Gray s Elegy to John Milton s Lyciads , we discover a drastic difference. Both men indited in replication to a death of their friend. Gray s poem reflected mental conceptions of the past lives of the mundane people found within the country churchyard. He is asking us to accolade the lives of the people he has discovered in this graveyard. Gray develops relationships between these dead and nature. • 38. The Song This Jesus Must Die Musicals are a living form of art. A musical combines dance, dialogue, characters, music, costumes and vocals in order to represent a moral issue. Some appear at the forefront of the plot while others are presented alongside the storyline. A fitting example of a musical, is Jesus Christ Superstar composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber. This musical is perfect as it is entirely sung, has amazing rock music and has themes and moral issues carefully intertwine throughout the plot. However, the largest moral issue or dilemma is how popularity can negatively and positively affect the main character Jesus. The song This Jesus must Die is an excellent example of the negative side of popularity, as it shows the Romans planning to kill Jesus before he surpasses them in power. The song begins with a moderate tempo of 72bpm in a time signature of 4/4. However, the use of semibreves and the organ slows the perceived tempo, giving the score a ghostly and ominous feel (seen in bars 1 13 and figure 1 and 2). This ominous feel is throughout these bars, as it represents the tension between Jesus s power and the Roman authority. This also clearly sets up the roman s character, as a dominating evil force. • 40. Persuasive Essay On Juveniles Elizabeth Alexander had nearly fallen asleep one ___ night in 2016 when she was jostled awake by a firecracker of a noise. She noticed an unusually bright orange light, which she at first thought it was a street light beaming through a starless Selma sky. She soon realized it was instead her car, engulfed in radiant flames. One of the only items she owned was being taken from her, and she could do nothing about it. She sat in awe and disbelief, a moment of euphoria that would set her life on an unexpected journey. Until that point, Alexander had lived her life as a rebel, a badge she wore proudly after years of internal turmoil. She spent time in foster care as a child, since her diabetic mother was in and out of the hospital and could not always care for her three children. While there, Alexander was sexually abused by older girls in the system. In school, she was bullied. All of these environmental elements led to creating Alexander s tough girl persona as a child. I was a fighter. I would fight you, it didn t matter who you were, because I got picked on so much that it became my defense, Alexander said. Alexander, now 24, has been arrested once for every year of her life. The majority of the arrests occurred when she was a juvenile, and most were for disorderly conduct. A locked up life is not a hopeful one. But for the first time, as Alexander watched her livelihood disappear into the midnight air, she saw opportunity in disparity.
