Effect of Sucrose Molarity on Potato Tuber Weight
Using Sucrose Solutions to Determine Osmolarity of Potato Tubers Based on Weight
By Thomas Pelikan
Biology 200A
Section 004
Kimberly Schmidt
October 2, 2012
Abstract:
In this experiment we were trying to determine the osmolarity of potato tubers by weighing them
before and after incubating them in solutions of sucrose with varying molarities. To find the
osmolarity we took a potato and used a cork borer to obtain seven samples of potato tubers. We then
prepared seven beakers with concentrations of sucrose ranging from 0.0M to 0.6M. After weighing the
potato tubers one by one we cut them in half and placed each halved tuber into each beaker. We
incubated them for 1 hour, stirring every 10 minutes. After one hour we removed the ... Show more

The control treatment was beaker 1 which contained only DI water. There was no repetition to this
experiment.
Results:
The purpose of this experiment was to incubate potato tubers in solutions with increasing molarities of
sucrose to determine osmolarity based on the weight of the potato tubers before and after incubation.
After removing the potato tubers from the beakers, we weighed the pieces and recorded the weights.
We then observed the weight change and percent change in weight of the potatoes. In every
concentration of sucrose the weight of the potato tubers increased, with the largest change in weight
being in the 0.2M solution of sucrose with a change of 9.5%. The smallest change in weight was in the
0.4M solution of sucrose; the change in weight was 0.47% (Table 1). The percent change in weight of
the potato tubers started high at 0.0M with a change of 4.3% and decreased to 2.4% at 0.1M, then
increased dramatically to 9.5% at 0.2M. It decreased again to 0.48% at 0.3M then again to 0.47% at
0.4M. At 0.5M it increased to 3.5%, and then at 0.6M the weight change decreased again to 1.0%. The
percent change of weight generally decreased from 0.0M to 0.4M, and both 0.5M and 0.6M are
increases from 0.4M (Figure 1).

Photography In The 19th Century
The initial style photos were made between the 1850s and 1860s, to report design for Parisian style
houses. Reproduction in design diaries happened much later, between 1881 (with the development of
the halftone printing process by Frederic Eugene Ives) and 1886 (when the refinement of the
procedure made it fiscally practicable). This leap forward made it conceivable to imitate photos and
offer to a huge gathering of people through the medium of the printed page. In the late 19th and mid
20th hundreds of years, qualifications between style photography, picture, and theater photography
were regularly obscured. Using proficient models was at first viewed as stunning, and it along these
lines got to be elegant in the early years of the century for society superstars, for example, Gertrude
Vanderbilt Whitney, to show. The outcome was that design photos were strikingly like society
pictures. Using a performing artist, for example, Sarah Bernhardt is similar to the vogue in the mid
2000s for utilizing Gwyneth Paltrow or Madonna or the tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams to
model current design. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Environmental Impacts Of Coal Mining
It has been long recognized that there are many environmental consequences by extracting, using and
disposing of coal. Due mainly to the nature of the coal deposits which are typically full size, covering
huge regions including more than one seams extending over big vertical durations. Coal mining in all
likelihood consequences in an extra disturbance to the geologic conditions of an area than any other
form of mining(Ehlen, Haneberg Larson, 2005, p. 79). The two ways to mine coal; surface mining and
underground mining both extraction operations have their own personal negative impact on the
environment. Strip mining a type of surface mining, is highly destructive scraping away at earths
landscape to reach the coal buried near the surface removing plants, trees and topsoil. Also, another
type of surface mining; mountaintop mining blasts off the tops of mountain s to reach coal seams
within, creating drastic changes in topography. Whereas, underground coal extraction has its fair share
of environmental impacts as well, such as subsidence and underground coal fires. Mine subsidence
and collapses have the potential to produce major effects above ground, which are especially
devastating in developed areas, destroying roads and buildings. Craig, Vaughan Skinner (2011) found
that there are an estimated 300 underground coal fires still burning in the United States; in many parts
of the world, coal beds have been accidentally or spontaneously ignited (p.142). The

Bloodstain Patterns Analysis Essay
Overview
Hollywood holds a notorious reputation for exaggerating scenes of criminal investigation with the
intention to evoke drama for the viewer (Saferstein, 2015, p. 5). From the identification of evidence, to
the handling etiquette of crime scenes the exaggeration of various criminal investigation procedures
has lead to the formation of an idealized image of forensic analysis (FA) in the public eye. It is an
image that is arguably emotionally stimulating, but nonetheless, heavily inaccurate. Amongst all of the
various fields of FA, Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA) is arguably one of the most inaccurately
portrayed types of FA in Hollywood films. This includes the duration of the process, the measuring
methods of patterns, the classification ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During crime scene investigations, the goal of BPA is to correctly interpret any bloodstain patterns
discovered at the scene to pinpoint an approximate picture of how the crime actually occurred (Joris,
Develter, Jenar, Suetens, Vandermeulen, Voorde, Claes, 2015, p. 116). The significance of correctly
analyzing these bloodstains could lead to the discoveries of new evidence for court cases, as well as
inevitably increasing the possibility of catching the suspect (Miller, 2008, p. 142). Overall, both the
Pattern Analyst and BPA are crucial for the serious crime section and should never be overlooked in

Importance Of The Colosseum
The functions religious or otherwise, of the colosseum were irrelevant to the ultimate design of the
architecture.
Once the colosseum had been built it seems to have become the model for many, if not most, of those
that followed (Hopkins and Beard 2005, 24). The Colosseum stands proudly upon the villainous
Emperor Nero s once grand Valley of the Golden House, projecting the munificence of Imperial
Roman Architecture of the Flavian period. Its ultimate design could be said to be formed through
purpose or function. However, this does not do justice to the importance of architecture within Roman
society (Thornton and Thornton in Lyes 1999, 2). The functions whether it be religious or otherwise,
of the Colosseum were irrelevant to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The diameter of the entire Colosseum was thus reduced and convention disregarded to take into
consideration this architectural feature. Looking in detail at the classical orders themselves which
made up the levels of the façade and the 80 grand entrances of the Colosseum it would appear to not
be revolutionary. However, if you engage with the architecture closer it reveals further Roman
architectural ingenuity and the importance of the structures appearance.
Traditionally Roman buildings saw the use of the classical Greek Doric order on ground levels
(without bases) with the more decorative orders of Ionic and Corinthian stacked above this (Lyes
1999, 6). However, in the Colosseum these orders were stacked and used in a way which had no
previous precedent in Roman architecture (Lyes 1999, 6). The design sees the orders dramatically
reduced, which has the columns that are engaged within the structure constructed with bases, and the
column shaft themselves missing the usual entasis of classic Greek orders, this all leads to a much
simplified capital. Between each stacked order there is a triple facia architrave, a relatively plain
designed freeze and cornice (Lyes 1999, 6). The use of the classical orders in this manner within the
design of the Colosseum, without precedent, was in fact not structural but a façade or veneer. This
allowed the

Western Influence On Things Fall Apart
In the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe it is demonstrated how the Ibo culture slowly
deteriorated from their own culture. The Western ideas influenced a different impact on certain
characters, this also included characters like Okonwo and his son Nwoye. Many from the Ibo culture
were confused by the merge of the European people slowly but subtly trying to enforce and covert
their religion upon them. The books ending explained why the book was written in the first place,
which was to break the silence that existed from the unheard side of the colonized people. The novel
explained the impact Nwoye encountered with Western ideas was a clear and positive one. Nwoye felt

Lady Sing The Blues Comparison
Overtime the music industry has seen many varieties of artists, genres and songs. With each era that
comes and goes so does the kind of music that is popular during that time period. Even popular artist
become less popular over time. Unfortunately sometimes an artist does not receive their fame until
they are dead and gone. Although they may no longer be the rage of right now an artist will always be
famous for the music they sang and played during their times. Lady Sings The Blues is Billie Holiday

topic often. She even gets up during her performance to go to more drugs and when she comes back

beginning to end never leaving anything out. Billie tells us about her addiction and how sick she was
but she still is always clear about the things she is talking about. Throughout her life story she always

The Negative Effects Of Eurocentric Beauty Standards...
Despite the claim that everyone is beautiful, barely 20% of the models in New York, London, Paris,
and Milan for fashion week are people of color (Wilson, 2014). Eurocentric beauty standards have a
negative impact on countless people around the world who do not fit into these set values. These
standards are often times valued over non European features, and this impacts children at a younger
age than some may believe. It is not uncommon for people with lighter skin to be more valued than
those who have darker skin. A prime example of the effects of Eurocentric beauty standards around
the world is shown in A White Woman of Color by Julia Alvarez:
The oldest sister had the darkest coloring, with very curly hair and coarse features. She looked the
most like Papi s side of the family and was considered the least pretty. [...] But the pride and joy of the
family was the baby. She was the one who made heads turn and strangers approach asking to feel her
silken hair. She was white white, an adjective that was repeated in describing her color as if to deepen
the shade of white. (Alvarez, 1998, p. 131). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Those who have lighter skin and features that are similar to those of Europeans are often considered
more attractive, while those who have darker skin are looked down upon. In Asia, numerous women
use skin whitening creams, and some even go as far as to have double eyelid surgeries. Plastic surgery
is also common in Lebanon, where one in three women will undergo treatment. Many African women
also find the need to change the texture of their hair (Eurocentric 2015). All over the world, women of
color feel pressured by societal expectations to alter their appearances to fit into a more Eurocentric

Epiphany In Hamlet
So I had an epiphany. Actually, that s not quite the right word. An epiphany is a moment of sudden
clarity, but mine was anything but sudden. It rolled in slowly and started to unfold itself, like it was
doing its morning stretch.
Yesterday, I was in London with my son. We decided to go ahead and catch the opening of Hamlet, at
the Royal National Theatre. Written by William Shakespeare, the play illustrates the difficulties we ll
encounter in our lives. Shakespeare does this through the characters, soliloquies, and allusions to the
theme of madness. Whilst we were watching the play, my son whispered in my ear, claiming that
Hamlet reminded him of Tupac. At first I dismissed it as ridiculous, but then I thought about it.
Perhaps he was right. Are these two seemingly different people somewhat related? ... Show more

Is Hamlet like Tupac? Tupac also saw this, and nothing proves this more than the song Changes. In
this song, Tupac shows the themes of appearance vs reality, revenge and morality. Like Hamlet
throughout the play, the song challenges the rules set by culture and works towards justice. These
show how hard life is to be an underprivileged Black man in the United States, with a kindness on
issues with police cruelty. This follows Hamlets theme of appearance vs reality as from the outside it
may look as though racism is no longer a factor as laws have changed and the systemic oppression of
minorities is no more. And I m sure as you may have heard, we had a black president! Therefore
everything is magically fixed. As the song develops, Tupac makes simple as people sometimes wish it
could be, and that people must get used to these new environments. Similar to the motif of change
seen in Hamlet. Tupac expresses how simple it is for people to buy weapons and kill other people.
How in times of change we result to fighting and killing. Like Shakespeare, Tupac uses allusion to
illustrate that madness is not a good way to find the meanings to an

This rebelling nature was not fit in the Puritan Society s standards for women, as women were to
respect men and not rebel against them.
In addition to Hester s rebellious nature, she also defies the Puritan s standards through her great
confidence. Hester Prynne of Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter disregards the Puritan Society
s standards of women through her astounding confidence. The Following scene takes place when
Hester is being escorted out of prison by the town beadle. He places his hands on her shoulders and
she confidently repels him, using her own free will, which is very unlikely for women at the time.
Stretching forth the official staff in his left hand, he laid his right upon the shoulder of a young
woman, whom he thus drew forward, until, on the threshold of the prison door, she repelled him, by
an action marked with natural dignity and force of character, and stepped into the open air as if by her
own free will (Hawthorne 36). Hester s confidence when he repels the town beadle away, shows that
she defies the standards for women. The Puritan women were not usually being escorted from jail, but
Hester does this with confidence, showing that not only does she disregard the image of women in the
Puritan Society but she does it with confidence as she pushes the beadle away, and continues to walk
out of jail by her own free will. In addition, the governor notices

Comparative religion is a relatively new discipline in theology. Comparative religion is the branch of
theology that is concerned with the systematic comparison of the different religions of the world. Two
religions that have been at the forefront of media attention in recent years are Islam and Christianity.
These two religions have been constantly criticized by individuals who may have some knowledge of
these religions, but have not dove into the depths to fully understand the origins and beliefs of these
two very different religions. Before one can make claims and judgments on religions one must know

United States Political Thought Today Is Considered A...
United States political thought today is considered a democracy. A democracy is where the citizens of
the United States are eligible to vote for the leaders that represent their country. Without the drafting
of the British documents, such as The Magna Carta and the Petition of Rights along with the political
upheaval of the Glorious Revolution and Enlightenment, America today would be following the
traditional acts of arbitrary monarchical rule. All of these specific times in history were outcomes of
people seeing that absolute monarchies were troubling for the fundamental rights of the people. Being
under an absolute monarchy is similar to being under a dictatorship which leaves no say in the hand of
the people.
The Magna Carta, also known as The Great Charter, was the catalyst for creating a representative
democracy. The King of England, King John was forced by his barons to sign the charter to establish
that the monarch was no longer absolute and that the people were guaranteed a trial by jury and due
process of law. King John is considered to be one of the worst kings in history. He was not in favor of
the people, he was in favor of himself. Being an avaricious king, he would penalize any baron who
went against his wishes. In 1206, King John lost some land that he was insistent on getting back.
Normandy, Anjou, Maine and parts of Poitou were no longer under his control. In attempt to retrieve
his land he imposed heavy taxes upon his citizens. If the people decided not

Whaleboy decides to stay out of the fight. Keeping his kingdom and soldiers safe is his number one
priority. The people of the kingdom start to riot and complain. Whaleboy approval rating goes down to

matters. His closest friends start to worry about him.
After weeks of despair, Whaleboy receives a bubble video from Sir Sea Cucumber. It shows Mosquito
Man hanging on the wall of a dirty, wretched undersand dungeon. His wings were droopy, antennas
were limp, and tears were falling from his face. Then out of the darkness of the dungeon came the
glaring smirk of Sir Sea Cucumber. He explained with a grin that Mosquito Man would die if
Whaleboy did not come to his aid and join the war. Whaleboy was furious. How could Sir Sea

A Report On Tesla Model 3
The big automotive news since the beginning of this month has been all about the Tesla Model 3, the
next vehicle coming from America s electric car manufacturer.
On March 31, Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled a prototype of the compact sedan and immediately tens
of thousands of people placed $1,000 refundable deposits on a car that won t arrive until late 2017 at
the earliest.
By late last week, the so called pre orders (advanced orders) totaled 325,000 and included early
adopters from around the world. That s a staggering number of people demonstrating interest in a car
some believe will help make electric vehicles mainstream within the next few years.
Although Tesla is receiving much deserved press, perhaps the attention should now turn ... Show more

Specifically, range anxiety, an important detriment to consumer consideration, will be largely
alleviated thanks to improvements in battery technologies.
In fact, GM promises 200 miles of range for the Bolt or about twice the distance of the Nissan Leaf s
current limits. Similarly, the new Tesla will deliver a projected 215 miles of electric driving. That both
vehicles are priced in the $35,000 to $38,000 range is important too with federal and state incentives
available to qualified buyers, the two models may parallel the cost of buying a similar gasoline
powered model.
Electric Vehicle Proviso
Before we become all giddy about electric vehicle mainstreaming it is important to note one highly
significant caveat the range numbers are realized when an electric vehicle is operated in optimum
weather conditions, such as at 77 degrees Fahrenheit. At the extremes, especially in sub freezing
driving, vehicle range may fall dramatically.
For instance, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that fuel economy for hybrid electric
vehicles ...can drop about 31% to 34%... under extreme conditions. Given that hybrids and electric
vehicles share similar battery componentry, that 200 mile range may fall to 130 miles.
That s still better than the range limits for today s crop of mainstream electric vehicles, nevertheless it
is a constitutive matter that should not be easily dismissed.

Hunger, Malnutrition, And Famine
According to recent statistics from the United Nations World Food Program, 795 million people
across the globe, suffer from the effects of being undernourished ( Food Program, 2015, para. 1). Both
hunger and malnutrition serve to be the number one risk to health and well being, more so than Aids,
Tuberculosis, and Malaria combined ( Food Program, 2015, para. 1). Although the planet produces
enough food to feed everyone (Wright Boorse, 2014), hunger, malnutrition, and famine continue to
adversely affect people in both developed and developing nations. Children are particularly
susceptible to the ill effects of hunger and malnutrition as stunting or growth failure, aside for disease,
is the leading cause of abnormal growth development in children ( Stunting, n.d.).
In July of 2015, while serving as a health care provider, at a two day medical clinic in the
impoverished town of Suscal, Ecuador, a fairly young woman sought my treatment for her 12 year old
son who was suffering the consequences of chronic diarrhea from a parasitic infection contracted by
drinking contaminated water. Besides chronic diarrhea, the child also suffered the after effects of the
Hepatitis B virus, which was contracted by eating contaminated food. Most stunning was the child s
clinical presentation of being underdeveloped and underweight for a normal 12 year old. Even more
alarming was the fact that the child was missing both maxillary incisors. Through an interpreter, the

An Analysis Of Peter Stanley s Dead Wrong
I strongly believe that Dead Wrong should be selected for study for all year eight students at Mater
Maria Catholic College. This statement roots from effective utilisation of appropriate language, given
that the target audience is year eights with constantly expanding knowledge of the surrounding world.
This is also due to the encapsulation of themes within the novel that are perfectly fitted to year eights
at Mater Maria. The success of this novel is also illuminated through crime fiction conventions, which
are composed to broaden the students knowledge and understanding of the genre and what is required
to construct a plot under the genre of crime fiction. Having assembled these points, I will now outline
why Peter Stanley s Dead Wrong should be selected as the novel of year eight study with literary
evidence.
My first point as to why Dead Wrong ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In actuality the struggle of finding a novel with the use of themes suitable for the particular year group
is definitely not a trouble free task. Dead Wrong makes use of the most suitable combination of
gruelling or advanced themes for year eight responders through the perfect interval of literary
elements. Themes prominent within the novel are suspense, tension and not jumping to conclusions.
These themes aid in portraying the mature aspect of the novel and assisting with the students growing
knowledge. The quote Wilson got up, chased and charged at him again, slashing him across the body
once more before Sweeney could raise his gun. implies that the novel uses fairly gruesome language
reflecting the target audience. Having used this language, year eights would advance in their English
and writing skills due to the newfound knowledge of language techniques and age level appropriation.
This makes Dead Wrong the best choice for year eight and should definitely be chosen by all year

On The Waterfront, by Elia Kazan Essay
For a near championship boxer to fall from the limelight after a defeat is fairly common, but to lose
due to his own brother betting against him is unheard of. Elia Kazan s On the Waterfront portrays the
role of this former fighter living his life as a bum under a local mob boss. This movie stands out from
how movies are portrayed today. It didn t have a lot of fast chase scenes, immense battles, or over the
top special effects. This movie focused on its characters, by portraying their reactions to the
cumbersome niche they play on the dockyard. It was driven by a series of intertwined conflicts, and a
strong mix of character development and storytelling, and made for a phenomenal piece of art.

She is portrayed as moral innocence, beckoning to Terry to tell the truth and bring justice to those that
slew her brother. She helps the audience relate to an outsider looking in on a society that has accepted
their role as slaves to those with greater power. Father Barry, a minister who preaches against the
crimes of the mob, pushes Terry along the path to truth. He urges him to speak out against his
oppressors for the good of the entire dock. He brings a strong sense of justice and righteous action to a
community otherwise broken and accepting of their roles as thralls. The conflicts fueling this story are
also provided by a livid cast of characters and a dark story to be told. Development of both characters
and story can be hard to draw a fine line on, but On the Waterfront walks that line like an acrobat.
There was a strong emphasis on getting the viewer to feel what the main characters were feeling. As
Father Barry gave his crucifixion speech, the emotions and reactions portrayed by the father and his
onlookers simply added to the powerful statements he was preaching. The dockworkers with no
connections in the mob knew he spoke the truth, and yet their faces showed that they were too afraid
to even mention working conditions or recent killings committed by the mob. Although the movie had
an emphasis towards building knowledge only about the main characters, background characters only
amplified the feelings the audience

Sleep Apnea Symptoms And Treatment
Finally Get A Good Night s Rest With Sleep Apnea Treatment
If someone you know is snoring loudly most nights, you know how much that can keep you from
getting a good night s rest. What you may not know is that it s doing the same to the person who s
snoring. Snoring is not just about sleeping right, though. When snoring crosses the line into sleep
apnea, the chance of developing several serious health problems increases. For the sake of both the
snorer and the people who have to hear it, you should seek help for sleep apnea.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Snoring is usually not something you need to worry about. Everyone makes noise in their sleep. But
when the snoring is loud and lasts most of the night, then you might have sleep apnea. In this
condition, your airway becomes partially blocked during sleep by your own throat and tongue. Your
throat muscles relax too much, which causes the airway to begin to collapse. This will either make it
harder to breathe forcing air past it is what causes the snoring noise or it makes your body think it s
being suffocated.
When this happens, your body panics and thinks it s suffocating. You suddenly wake up, but not quite
completely. Instead, you fall back to sleep because your airway is open again. As you fall asleep, the
airway collapses a little, and you have this horrible cycle of sleeping, gasping for air, and falling back
to sleep again. This is officially known as oObstructive sSleep aApnea (OSA).

ut camp really changed my life. This happened while I was new to Boy Scouts. It started off with me
at my house and my parents wanting me to go camping. The problem was that I did not want to go to
camp and be by myself for a week. In this, even me and I was extremely shy, nervous, and, dependent.
My friend was about the same at that time. There was a leader that was kind, caring and
understanding. The mood went from sad to happy and the tone went from depressing to exciting. This
event changed my life for the good. That day that I traveled to camp, I was scared. I knew that it
would be very far away from home and I would be far away from home for a long time. Even though I
pleaded to stay home my parents kept saying, You will enjoy camping.

##ortals Of Meluh The First Novel Of The Shiva Trilogy...
The Immortals of Meluha is the first novel of the Shiva trilogy series by Amish Tripathi. The story is
laid down in the land of Meluha and begins with the appearance of the Shiva. The Meluhans believe
that Shiva is their fabled saviour Neelkanth. Shiva decides to help the Meluhans in their war against
the Chandravanshis, who had joined forces with a cursed Nagas; however, during his journey and the
fight that ensues, Shiva realizes how his choices actually reflect who he aspires to be and how they
lead to dire consequences.
Tripathi had initially decided to write a book on the philosophy of evil, but having been discouraged
by his family members; he decided to write a book on Shiva, one of the Hindu Gods. He decided to
make a foundation of his story on a fundamental idea that all Gods were once human beings; it was
their endeavors in the human life that made them Gods. After completing The Immortals of Meluha,
Tripathi faced rejection from many publication houses. Ultimately when his agent decided to publish
the book himself, Tripathi embarked on a promotional campaign. It included posting a live action
video on YouTube, and making the first chapter of the book available as a free digital download, to
tempt readers.
Finally, when the book was published in February 2010, it went on to become a huge commercial
success. It had to be reprinted a number of times to keep up with the demand. Tripathi even changed
his publisher and hosted a big launch for the book in Delhi. It was

Ocean Conveyor Belt
Overview/Description Demonstrates how water has different densities at different temperatures and
salinity levels, then ties this in to the Ocean Conveyor Belt, a deep ocean circulation driven by
temperature and salinity that carries water around the world. Background Thermohaline circulation or
the Ocean Conveyor Belt is responsible for the large scale ocean circulation. It is driven by global
density differences caused by surface heat, and variations in salinity. As the water moves throughout
the globe with total transit times of up to 1000+ years, the water masses transport heat energy, and
matter (dissolved substances, gases, and nutrients) around the globe. The density of ocean water is not
the same throughout the global oceans, but varies significantly and discretely. Warm seawater expands
and is therefore less dense than cooler seawater. Moreover, saltier water is denser than fresher water
because of the dissolved salt that fills the space between water molecules, resulting in greater ... Show

In these regions, winds support evaporative cooling of the ocean water, which makes it denser due to
thermal processes, but also by removing water molecules resulting in a higher salinity. Formation of
sea ice also increases salinity as fresh/pure water is preferentially frozen first, expelling saltier brine.
These cold, saltier masses of water sink relatively rapidly over a small area. These waters of the North
Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) sinks and flows southward along the continental slope of North and
South America toward Antarctica and flows eastward around the Antarctic mixing with Antarctic
waters. The water circulation then flows northward at dept into the three ocean basins. During this
northward flow, they slowly begin to warm and mix with overlying waters and as a result, rise toward
the surface at a rate of about 1 centimeter per day over most of the

The Effect Of Calcium On The Reaction Of Hydrogen Peroxide
Introduction: The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of varying concentrations of
potassium iodide on its reaction with hydrogen peroxide. H2O2(aq) + 2H+(aq) + 2I (aq) → 2H2O + I2
In this experiment, the hydrogen peroxide reacts with iodide ions to produce iodine. The iodine can be
detected by its colour forming a blue black solution. The detection of the iodine can be enhanced by
the addition of starch solution. The sodium thiosulphate will react with the iodine ions and when the
all the sodium thiosulphate has reacted, then the remaining iodine ions will suddenly appear to form
the coloured solution due to the addition of starch. I2(aq) + 2S2O32 (aq) → 2I (aq) + S4O62 (aq) The

The rate of reaction is dependent on the slowest step which is called the rate determining step . The
nature of the slow step is not obvious from the balanced equation. The order of reactions with respect
to each reactant in the RDS is the same as the number of moles of that chemical in the RDS A series of
experiments were carried out in which the concentration of iodide ions is varied while keeping the
concentrations of all the other solutions the same. In each experiment, the time taken for the colour
change is recorded. The results obtained are used to determine the rate of reaction. The rate of reaction

Thursday Night Nachos Essay
On September 21, September 28 and October 5, my friends and I wanted to watch Thursday Night

in the restaurant was welcoming and laid back. Unfortunately, the quality of the food that I ordered
was abysmal.
I ordered nachos that are part of the Thursday night half price app special, the three times that I went
to Willy McCoys. I ordered extra cheese and extra beef on my nachos. When the nachos were
delivered to me by the waitress, the chips were cooked perfectly. I am disappointed with the quality of
the food because a majority of the beef was cold and most of the cheese was unmelted. I assumed that
the cook had an off day , or that there was a malfunction with a cooking equipment. So, on September
28 and October 5, I had my friends order nachos with extra cheese and beef. They as well received

Racial Profiling And Its Impact On Society
If love has no color, how about justice? Is justice defined by any color in the United States of
America, a country that is well known for its diversity and prosperity? Sadly to say, the existence and
the usage of the word stereotype has raised doubts about justice since it has existed and progressed as
part of the American culture for a long time. Stereotype can be classified into many subcategories, one
of which is racial profiling. This issue, where authorities target certain individuals based on their racial
characteristics, has never ceased. According to many influential claimsmakers, racial profiling has
stained the United States by negatively affecting society and disturbing the certainty of justice. It is

There is the implication that the police s unreasonable stops are illegal and unconstitutional. In
compliance with the above claims, racial profiling is a public concern which requires authorities to
intervene and make changes.
On a legal level, many authorities and people agree that racial profiling is a common and inappropriate
issue that needs to be prohibited. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, racial profiling violates the
constitutional requirement that all persons be accorded equal protection of the law (Lawson,
Henderson, and Chanin 2011). On top of that, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that racial
profiling is illegal and unjust since it discriminates one group against others (Lawson et al. 2011). The
issue receives legislative attention because it is among locals and police the representatives of
authorities that are supposed to protect and serve their people. In a 1999 Gallup Poll, the poll result
indicated that 77 percent of African Americans and 56 percent of Caucasians believed that racial
profiling was widespread and unacceptable (Lawson et al. 2011). Racial profiling seems to be
ubiquitous and has found its way to stay as a problem in the U.S. society. In 2007, a third year
evaluation report sponsored by the City of Cincinnati has, once again, recorded and analyzed one of
the most common forms of racial profiling stops made by

The Epidemic Of The Obesity Epidemic Essay
Introduction The World Health Organization (WHO) defines obesity as the excessive accumulation of
fat that puts the person s health at risk (Lenzi et al., 2015). The prevalence of obesity has increased
worldwide over the past three decades. According to Holtz (2016), obese people have outnumbered
the undernourished, with the World Health Organization estimating that 1.9 billion adults are
overweight, out of which about 600 million are obese. Given the recent trends, it is estimated that 1.12
billion people will be obese by 2030 (Grossschädl, 2014). According to a report by the McKinsey
Global Institute, 2014), the global impact of the obesity epidemic is estimated to be $20 trillion, or 2.8
percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP), which is on a par with the global impact from
terrorism, armed violence, smoking, and warfare. Setting the Context Presently, the toll of the
epidemic on healthcare systems alone is between 2 percent and seven percent of net healthcare
spending in industrialized economies, excluding the huge costs associated with the treatment of heart
disease and type 2 diabetes that account for up to twenty percent of healthcare costs (Bassuk Manson,
2008; Alosco et al., 2015). In addition to the costs to healthcare systems, obesity undermines the
productivity of employees, thereby undercutting corporate competitiveness. According to the

majority of Russian arms, it is located on an island in the middle of the river Neva in Petrograd, he

that night the Revolution began. The primary objectives were to take command of railway stations,

This objective continued into the morning of the 7th, and on the evening of the 7th November 1917
Trotsky and his Red Guard stormed the Winter Palace and arrested the ministers of the provisional

  • 2. Effect of Sucrose Molarity on Potato Tuber Weight Using Sucrose Solutions to Determine Osmolarity of Potato Tubers Based on Weight By Thomas Pelikan Biology 200A Section 004 Kimberly Schmidt October 2, 2012 Abstract: In this experiment we were trying to determine the osmolarity of potato tubers by weighing them before and after incubating them in solutions of sucrose with varying molarities. To find the osmolarity we took a potato and used a cork borer to obtain seven samples of potato tubers. We then prepared seven beakers with concentrations of sucrose ranging from 0.0M to 0.6M. After weighing the potato tubers one by one we cut them in half and placed each halved tuber into each beaker. We incubated them for 1 hour, stirring every 10 minutes. After one hour we removed the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The control treatment was beaker 1 which contained only DI water. There was no repetition to this experiment. Results: The purpose of this experiment was to incubate potato tubers in solutions with increasing molarities of sucrose to determine osmolarity based on the weight of the potato tubers before and after incubation. After removing the potato tubers from the beakers, we weighed the pieces and recorded the weights. We then observed the weight change and percent change in weight of the potatoes. In every concentration of sucrose the weight of the potato tubers increased, with the largest change in weight being in the 0.2M solution of sucrose with a change of 9.5%. The smallest change in weight was in the 0.4M solution of sucrose; the change in weight was 0.47% (Table 1). The percent change in weight of the potato tubers started high at 0.0M with a change of 4.3% and decreased to 2.4% at 0.1M, then increased dramatically to 9.5% at 0.2M. It decreased again to 0.48% at 0.3M then again to 0.47% at 0.4M. At 0.5M it increased to 3.5%, and then at 0.6M the weight change decreased again to 1.0%. The percent change of weight generally decreased from 0.0M to 0.4M, and both 0.5M and 0.6M are increases from 0.4M (Figure 1). Table 1. Using initial weight, final weight, weight change, and percent change in weight of potato tubers after incubation in varying solutions of sucrose molarity ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Photography In The 19th Century The initial style photos were made between the 1850s and 1860s, to report design for Parisian style houses. Reproduction in design diaries happened much later, between 1881 (with the development of the halftone printing process by Frederic Eugene Ives) and 1886 (when the refinement of the procedure made it fiscally practicable). This leap forward made it conceivable to imitate photos and offer to a huge gathering of people through the medium of the printed page. In the late 19th and mid 20th hundreds of years, qualifications between style photography, picture, and theater photography were regularly obscured. Using proficient models was at first viewed as stunning, and it along these lines got to be elegant in the early years of the century for society superstars, for example, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, to show. The outcome was that design photos were strikingly like society pictures. Using a performing artist, for example, Sarah Bernhardt is similar to the vogue in the mid 2000s for utilizing Gwyneth Paltrow or Madonna or the tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams to model current design. ... This has darkened the commitments of such vital Parisian design picture takers as Maison Reutlinger, Talbot, Felix, Henri Manuel, and Boissonnas et Taponnier as right on time as 1881. • 5. Environmental Impacts Of Coal Mining It has been long recognized that there are many environmental consequences by extracting, using and disposing of coal. Due mainly to the nature of the coal deposits which are typically full size, covering huge regions including more than one seams extending over big vertical durations. Coal mining in all likelihood consequences in an extra disturbance to the geologic conditions of an area than any other form of mining(Ehlen, Haneberg Larson, 2005, p. 79). The two ways to mine coal; surface mining and underground mining both extraction operations have their own personal negative impact on the environment. Strip mining a type of surface mining, is highly destructive scraping away at earths landscape to reach the coal buried near the surface removing plants, trees and topsoil. Also, another type of surface mining; mountaintop mining blasts off the tops of mountain s to reach coal seams within, creating drastic changes in topography. Whereas, underground coal extraction has its fair share of environmental impacts as well, such as subsidence and underground coal fires. Mine subsidence and collapses have the potential to produce major effects above ground, which are especially devastating in developed areas, destroying roads and buildings. Craig, Vaughan Skinner (2011) found that there are an estimated 300 underground coal fires still burning in the United States; in many parts of the world, coal beds have been accidentally or spontaneously ignited (p.142). • 6. Bloodstain Patterns Analysis Essay Overview Hollywood holds a notorious reputation for exaggerating scenes of criminal investigation with the intention to evoke drama for the viewer (Saferstein, 2015, p. 5). From the identification of evidence, to the handling etiquette of crime scenes the exaggeration of various criminal investigation procedures has lead to the formation of an idealized image of forensic analysis (FA) in the public eye. It is an image that is arguably emotionally stimulating, but nonetheless, heavily inaccurate. Amongst all of the various fields of FA, Bloodstain Pattern Analysis (BPA) is arguably one of the most inaccurately portrayed types of FA in Hollywood films. This includes the duration of the process, the measuring methods of patterns, the classification ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During crime scene investigations, the goal of BPA is to correctly interpret any bloodstain patterns discovered at the scene to pinpoint an approximate picture of how the crime actually occurred (Joris, Develter, Jenar, Suetens, Vandermeulen, Voorde, Claes, 2015, p. 116). The significance of correctly analyzing these bloodstains could lead to the discoveries of new evidence for court cases, as well as inevitably increasing the possibility of catching the suspect (Miller, 2008, p. 142). • 7. Importance Of The Colosseum The functions religious or otherwise, of the colosseum were irrelevant to the ultimate design of the architecture. Once the colosseum had been built it seems to have become the model for many, if not most, of those that followed (Hopkins and Beard 2005, 24). The Colosseum stands proudly upon the villainous Emperor Nero s once grand Valley of the Golden House, projecting the munificence of Imperial Roman Architecture of the Flavian period. Its ultimate design could be said to be formed through purpose or function. However, this does not do justice to the importance of architecture within Roman society (Thornton and Thornton in Lyes 1999, 2). The functions whether it be religious or otherwise, of the Colosseum were irrelevant to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The diameter of the entire Colosseum was thus reduced and convention disregarded to take into consideration this architectural feature. Looking in detail at the classical orders themselves which made up the levels of the façade and the 80 grand entrances of the Colosseum it would appear to not be revolutionary. However, if you engage with the architecture closer it reveals further Roman architectural ingenuity and the importance of the structures appearance. Traditionally Roman buildings saw the use of the classical Greek Doric order on ground levels (without bases) with the more decorative orders of Ionic and Corinthian stacked above this (Lyes 1999, 6). However, in the Colosseum these orders were stacked and used in a way which had no previous precedent in Roman architecture (Lyes 1999, 6). The design sees the orders dramatically reduced, which has the columns that are engaged within the structure constructed with bases, and the column shaft themselves missing the usual entasis of classic Greek orders, this all leads to a much simplified capital. Between each stacked order there is a triple facia architrave, a relatively plain designed freeze and cornice (Lyes 1999, 6). The use of the classical orders in this manner within the design of the Colosseum, without precedent, was in fact not structural but a façade or veneer. This allowed the ... • 8. Western Influence On Things Fall Apart In the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe it is demonstrated how the Ibo culture slowly deteriorated from their own culture. The Western ideas influenced a different impact on certain characters, this also included characters like Okonwo and his son Nwoye. Despite the claim that everyone is beautiful, barely 20% of the models in New York, London, Paris, and Milan for fashion week are people of color (Wilson, 2014). Eurocentric beauty standards have a negative impact on countless people around the world who do not fit into these set values. These standards are often times valued over non European features, and this impacts children at a younger age than some may believe. It is not uncommon for people with lighter skin to be more valued than those who have darker skin. A prime example of the effects of Eurocentric beauty standards around the world is shown in A White Woman of Color by Julia Alvarez: The oldest sister had the darkest coloring, with very curly hair and coarse features. She looked the most like Papi s side of the family and was considered the least pretty. [...] But the pride and joy of the family was the baby. She was the one who made heads turn and strangers approach asking to feel her silken hair. It rolled in slowly and started to unfold itself, like it was doing its morning stretch. Yesterday, I was in London with my son. We decided to go ahead and catch the opening of Hamlet, at the Royal National Theatre. Written by William Shakespeare, the play illustrates the difficulties we ll encounter in our lives. Shakespeare does this through the characters, soliloquies, and allusions to the theme of madness. Whilst we were watching the play, my son whispered in my ear, claiming that Hamlet reminded him of Tupac. At first I dismissed it as ridiculous, but then I thought about it. Perhaps he was right. These show how hard life is to be an underprivileged Black man in the United States, with a kindness on issues with police cruelty. This follows Hamlets theme of appearance vs reality as from the outside it may look as though racism is no longer a factor as laws have changed and the systemic oppression of minorities is no more. And I m sure as you may have heard, we had a black president! Therefore everything is magically fixed. As the song develops, Tupac makes simple as people sometimes wish it could be, and that people must get used to these new environments. Similar to the motif of change seen in Hamlet. Tupac expresses how simple it is for people to buy weapons and kill other people. How in times of change we result to fighting and killing. A democracy is where the citizens of the United States are eligible to vote for the leaders that represent their country. Without the drafting of the British documents, such as The Magna Carta and the Petition of Rights along with the political upheaval of the Glorious Revolution and Enlightenment, America today would be following the traditional acts of arbitrary monarchical rule. All of these specific times in history were outcomes of people seeing that absolute monarchies were troubling for the fundamental rights of the people. Being under an absolute monarchy is similar to being under a dictatorship which leaves no say in the hand of the people. The Magna Carta, also known as The Great Charter, was the catalyst for creating a representative democracy. The King of England, King John was forced by his barons to sign the charter to establish that the monarch was no longer absolute and that the people were guaranteed a trial by jury and due process of law. King John is considered to be one of the worst kings in history. He was not in favor of the people, he was in favor of himself. Being an avaricious king, he would penalize any baron who went against his wishes. In 1206, King John lost some land that he was insistent on getting back. Ocean Conveyor Belt Overview/Description Demonstrates how water has different densities at different temperatures and salinity levels, then ties this in to the Ocean Conveyor Belt, a deep ocean circulation driven by temperature and salinity that carries water around the world. Background Thermohaline circulation or the Ocean Conveyor Belt is responsible for the large scale ocean circulation. It is driven by global density differences caused by surface heat, and variations in salinity. As the water moves throughout the globe with total transit times of up to 1000+ years, the water masses transport heat energy, and matter (dissolved substances, gases, and nutrients) around the globe. The density of ocean water is not the same throughout the global oceans, but varies significantly and discretely. Warm seawater expands and is therefore less dense than cooler seawater. Moreover, saltier water is denser than fresher water because of the dissolved salt that fills the space between water molecules, resulting in greater ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In these regions, winds support evaporative cooling of the ocean water, which makes it denser due to thermal processes, but also by removing water molecules resulting in a higher salinity. Formation of sea ice also increases salinity as fresh/pure water is preferentially frozen first, expelling saltier brine. These cold, saltier masses of water sink relatively rapidly over a small area. These waters of the North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) sinks and flows southward along the continental slope of North and South America toward Antarctica and flows eastward around the Antarctic mixing with Antarctic waters. The water circulation then flows northward at dept into the three ocean basins. During this northward flow, they slowly begin to warm and mix with overlying waters and as a result, rise toward the surface at a rate of about 1 centimeter per day over most of the ... • 32. The Effect Of Calcium On The Reaction Of Hydrogen Peroxide Introduction: The aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of varying concentrations of potassium iodide on its reaction with hydrogen peroxide. H2O2(aq) + 2H+(aq) + 2I (aq) → 2H2O + I2 In this experiment, the hydrogen peroxide reacts with iodide ions to produce iodine. The iodine can be detected by its colour forming a blue black solution. The detection of the iodine can be enhanced by the addition of starch solution. The sodium thiosulphate will react with the iodine ions and when the all the sodium thiosulphate has reacted, then the remaining iodine ions will suddenly appear to form the coloured solution due to the addition of starch. I2(aq) + 2S2O32 (aq) → 2I (aq) + S4O62 (aq) The concentrations of each of the reactants ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rate of reaction is dependent on the slowest step which is called the rate determining step . The nature of the slow step is not obvious from the balanced equation. The order of reactions with respect to each reactant in the RDS is the same as the number of moles of that chemical in the RDS A series of experiments were carried out in which the concentration of iodide ions is varied while keeping the concentrations of all the other solutions the same. In each experiment, the time taken for the colour change is recorded. The results obtained are used to determine the rate of reaction. The rate of reaction can be represented as (1/time) and the concentration of the iodide ions can be represented by the volume of potassium iodide solution used. • 34. Thursday Night Nachos Essay On September 21, September 28 and October 5, my friends and I wanted to watch Thursday Night Football, so we got together and met at Willy McCoys in Champlin. The three times that I went, the drinks were astounding, and at a cut rate price, the waitress staff was friendly and also the atmosphere in the restaurant was welcoming and laid back. Unfortunately, the quality of the food that I ordered was abysmal. I ordered nachos that are part of the Thursday night half price app special, the three times that I went to Willy McCoys. I ordered extra cheese and extra beef on my nachos. When the nachos were delivered to me by the waitress, the chips were cooked perfectly. I am disappointed with the quality of the food because a majority of the beef was cold and most of the cheese was unmelted. I assumed that the cook had an off day , or that there was a malfunction with a cooking equipment. So, on September 28 and October 5, I had my friends order nachos with extra cheese and beef. They as well received cold beef and unmelted cheese. In my opinion, I would rather have food that is well cooked to ideal temperature, instead of food that is cold and has the potential of getting me sick. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 35. Racial Profiling And Its Impact On Society If love has no color, how about justice? Is justice defined by any color in the United States of America, a country that is well known for its diversity and prosperity? Sadly to say, the existence and the usage of the word stereotype has raised doubts about justice since it has existed and progressed as part of the American culture for a long time. Stereotype can be classified into many subcategories, one of which is racial profiling. This issue, where authorities target certain individuals based on their racial characteristics, has never ceased. According to many influential claimsmakers, racial profiling has stained the United States by negatively affecting society and disturbing the certainty of justice. It is unconstitutional and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is the implication that the police s unreasonable stops are illegal and unconstitutional. In compliance with the above claims, racial profiling is a public concern which requires authorities to intervene and make changes. On a legal level, many authorities and people agree that racial profiling is a common and inappropriate issue that needs to be prohibited. According to the U.S. Supreme Court, racial profiling violates the constitutional requirement that all persons be accorded equal protection of the law (Lawson, Henderson, and Chanin 2011). On top of that, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that racial profiling is illegal and unjust since it discriminates one group against others (Lawson et al. 2011). The issue receives legislative attention because it is among locals and police the representatives of authorities that are supposed to protect and serve their people. In a 1999 Gallup Poll, the poll result indicated that 77 percent of African Americans and 56 percent of Caucasians believed that racial profiling was widespread and unacceptable (Lawson et al. 2011). Racial profiling seems to be ubiquitous and has found its way to stay as a problem in the U.S. society. In 2007, a third year evaluation report sponsored by the City of Cincinnati has, once again, recorded and analyzed one of the most common forms of racial profiling stops made by ... • 37. The Epidemic Of The Obesity Epidemic Essay Introduction The World Health Organization (WHO) defines obesity as the excessive accumulation of fat that puts the person s health at risk (Lenzi et al., 2015). The prevalence of obesity has increased worldwide over the past three decades. According to Holtz (2016), obese people have outnumbered the undernourished, with the World Health Organization estimating that 1.9 billion adults are overweight, out of which about 600 million are obese. Given the recent trends, it is estimated that 1.12 billion people will be obese by 2030 (Grossschädl, 2014). According to a report by the McKinsey Global Institute, 2014), the global impact of the obesity epidemic is estimated to be $20 trillion, or 2.8 percent of the global gross domestic product (GDP), which is on a par with the global impact from terrorism, armed violence, smoking, and warfare. Setting the Context Presently, the toll of the epidemic on healthcare systems alone is between 2 percent and seven percent of net healthcare spending in industrialized economies, excluding the huge costs associated with the treatment of heart disease and type 2 diabetes that account for up to twenty percent of healthcare costs (Bassuk Manson, 2008; Alosco et al., 2015). In addition to the costs to healthcare systems, obesity undermines the productivity of employees, thereby undercutting corporate competitiveness. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2013), during the period between 2011 and 2012, 62.8 percent of Australians ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Leon Trotsky s Contribution to the Success of the Bolsheviks Up To 1922 In this essay I will explain Leon Trotsky s contribution to the success of the Bolsheviks. I will consider a number of reasons including his organisation of the revolution, his actions on the 6th 8th November 1917, public speaking, The Red Army civil war, and the Kronstadt uprising. I will finish with a clear, concise, conclusion. Leon Trotsky was born in 1879 in a remote part of southern Ukraine. He was the son of a Jewish farmer and was educated ant Odessa University. He became very interested in the writings of Karl Marx, as a result he spent long times in exile. Trotsky was a first a Menshevik and did not join the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the evening of 6th November 1917, Trotsky went to the Peter and Paul Fortress, this housed the majority of Russian arms, it is located on an island in the middle of the river Neva in Petrograd, he bribed the troops guarding the fortress and his troops were given access to powerful munitions. Later that night the Revolution began. The primary objectives were to take command of railway stations, post offices, telephone centres, banks, bridges, and the Engineers Palace (the military headquarters). This objective continued into the morning of the 7th, and on the evening of the 7th November 1917 Trotsky and his Red Guard stormed the Winter Palace and arrested the ministers of the provisional government. On the 8th November, an announcement was made that the provisional government had been overthrown. This helped the Bolsheviks because the organisation skills Trotsky supplied meant the Bolsheviks had support and weapons, if it hadn t been for him, the Bolsheviks may never have overthrown the government. It also meant everything was perfectly set up for the Revolution Trotsky was a skilled public speaker who managed to inspire his listeners to support him and his party. His speeches were inspirational to everyone who listened and it made many change their ideas about how Russia should be governed. He made his speeches with skill and brilliance . An eyewitness to ...
