Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

1. My Front Cover Evidence
Here you can see my original image that I have inserted onto a blank A4 page. This is the
main image for the cover of my magazine.
2. Here you can see me removing the background from the image. This is often done on
magazines if the background of the main image does not have the appropriate mise-en-
scene. To remove the background I used the quick select tool as well as the rubber to
remove the background.
3. On this screen shot, you can see I have inserted my mast head. To do this I simply copied
and pasted it from where I had already created it for my research. I then used the text tool to
add a USP under this. This is a common code and convention of magazines as this draws
people’s attention into the magazine. I also added a background for my main cover line, I did
this to make the text stand out as much as possible. In order to allow the audience to see
view the image underneath, to add texture I changed the opacity. I then added the text on
top of the this box.
4. Here you can see I have added more side cover lines to the magazine. I also put a back
drop behind them so it fits the theme of the magazine. I then put the text on top, in once
again the colours of the magazine theme.
5. Finally I added the price, date and barcode to the cover, as well as a subtle background so
that it’s off white. All these were necessary as they were the final touches to finishing the
front cover of the magazine.
