The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

We all have good and bad thoughts from time to time and situation to situation. We are bombarded daily with spiraling thoughts(both negative and positive) creating all-consuming feel , making us difficult to manage with associated suffering. Good thoughts are like our Mob Signal (Positive thought) amidst noise(negative thought) in the atmosphere. Negative thoughts like noise outweigh positive thoughts. These thoughts often create unwanted confusion, trouble, stress and frustration in our mind as well as chaos in our physical world. Negative thoughts are also known as “distorted thinking”.
2. Relation with “Q
• Straight from my magazine research I always
wanted to have the same approach as “Q”.
Who have a sense of sophistication and they
expect a lot from their readers. This is seen in
their fairly formal mode of address which
helps to keep their relationship with their
readers rich. At the same time they have a
healthy mix of formal and informal features to
integrate with their young (18-24) target
audience.
3. Front Cover
• On the front cover I engage to my young target
audience (18-24 year olds) by including
young, exciting and fresh new musical talents of
which appeal to my target audience. The Splash
“MICK JAGGER, SIT DOWN” I feel also appeals to my
young target audience as it presents a certain
amount of arrogance, of which most of my target
audience are attracted too. The Header Bar
“GLASTONBURY COVERED” will be very attractive to
my target audience as they consistently attend gigs.
I chose the model and pose of the model as I feel it
relates to my target audience as the model
seemingly has a sense of arrogance and attitude.
This again is very attractive to my young target
audience as the model has a very similar attitude to
life as my target audience. In the Pug I used the
wording “die” in the Pug line “WHY DID THE JAM
DIE?!” This attracts to my target audience as it
presents a sense of danger, and at their young
age, this is something they find exciting.
4. Contents Page
On my contents page (on both pages) I have used big bold contrasting colours to make
my pages visually appealing and eye-catching. This would appeal to my young target
audience – as due to their young age, they need something appealing to capture their
interest. The setting of the photo (up against a wall) is trying to symbolise the honesty
of the artist, who is not wanting to become a superstar, instead its all about the
performance, rather than the performer. A distilled pure artist who still keeps a
connection with his poor roots. The artist isn’t interested in the cult of personality. All
of these facts relate to my target audience, of which appreciate the artist’s honest
nature. It’s this kind of artist of which my target audience would idolise, and this is why
this image would attract to my target audience. The brick wall is meant to symbolise
how they target audience could identify with the artist, that their dream is actually
achievable. It also symbolises that the model could be the reader, that the artist is like
everyone else – a honest human being. The choice of Pull-Quote “I accept I’ve been
trouble and sometimes I’ve had to pay the price” gives a sense of petty, yet very
desired intrigue that the young target audience are automatically attracted too. It
might also relate to some of the young target audience who have beem in trouble, and
have a dream to become a music artist. This would inspire them to keep going and feel
their dream is very possible. This Pull-Quote offers information of which the young
target audience might not know about, and their desire to know about their favourite
artist will make this feature very attractive to them. “BRAWLING WITH THE FOO
FIGHTERS” offers a sense of danger of which some of my young target audience are
attracted too. Its this Mode of Address that will make my young target audience
attracted to the page. Another example of the Mode of Address in this page is “THEY
CONQUER, AND AFTER TEA THEY TALK EXCLUSIVELY TO THE MIX” The use of “THEY
CONQUER” again relates to my target audiences desire for danger. The use of “AFTER
TEA” is light humour and a British joke which matches my target audience’s
sophistication.
5. Double-paged Article
On my doubled-paged article I used a very
“in the face” photo to present a very “in
the face” interview. That the interview will
be a honest, yet brutal insight to the artist’s
life. This is something that a fan (my young
target audience) of the artist would be very
attracted too. The image The choice of Pull-
quotes I feel will possibly relate and
address my target audience personally fro
those who have made mistakes. In the
opening paragraph I make references to
“his mum” which is a fairly funny reference
to my young target audience.
