How does your media
product represent
particular social
groups?
COVER PAGE
Target audience:
The age group I’m targeting for my magazine is mid teens to
young adults, around 15-23 years old. I think my media product
would target young black girls because my cover star is black
and they can relate to her, especially as she is also ‘young’. In
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, this taps into esteem. If other black
girls see someone similar to them who is idolized and has star
appeal it can boost their self-esteem and self confidence. I tried
to give my model a “star image” (Richard Dyer) by dressing her
up in gold jewelry with a thick gold chain –this acts as a status
symbol to the viewer as a sign of success and someone who is
aspirational. As well as that, they might feel respected by others
because it could be them that’s on the cover of a hit magazine.
They’ll feel a sense of achievement because the cover star is
representing all the young black girls. The reader might also start
to compare their lifestyle with that of the cover star (Katz’s
gratification) if they’re both young black females. On the other
hand, I think my magazine could also attract the ‘male gaze’
(Laura Mulvey) because the way my model is posing is quite
seductive; she’s also wearing red lipstick which connotes sex
appeal.

Potential readers of KHORD$ magazine
Target audience:On the ABC1 socio-economic graph, my target audience are in
category E, unemployed – which means they probably don’t have
a lot of disposable income. Therefore, the puff promotion on my
cover page “25% off apple music” will appeal to them because
it’s a chance for them to save money on music - something that’s
seen a necessity in their generation. As well as that, I used the
term “exclusive” to persuade the reader that they can’t get this
deal anywhere else.

Target audience:On my front cover I also used a range of different fonts, sizes and
colours to make the page appear more interesting and fun
looking – which will appeal to my young audience (15-23).
However, I made sure the fonts I chose weren’t too childish
looking or bogus. As well as that, I think different text makes
each feature on the magazine stand out and the reader is more
likely to read it rather than if it was all in the same font.

CONTENTS
Target audience:At the bottom of my contents page I used social media links so
my audience can stay connected to the magazine online. I also
used them because majority of social media consumers are my
target audience – females age 15-23. I also have link s and a QR
code on my front cover which will initially attract readers of this
digital age.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
Target audience:This isn’t a common convention, however, on my double page
spread I used a “girly” cover star sign off which is addressed to
my audience (girls age 15-23). I feel this adds a real cliché
feminine touch and makes the audience feel like Elizabeth (my
cover star) is actually addressing them.

Target audience:I used a pink, purple and blue gradient for my magazine’s
colour scheme because I think it will appear to girls without
coming across as “too girly”. I also used these colours
because I wanted to add a pop element to my magazine,
however, I replaced the typical bright pink for a subtle, pale
pinky/purple which I think comes across as more mature for
my target audience (age 15-23) yet still fun and feminine. I
kept the colour scheme consistent throughout my magazine to
create personality.
