Media Coursework - Question 2 Hannah
1.
2. Genre
The genre of my music magazine is pop and from my magazine
research I discovered that it was one the most popular music genres.
This genre mainly represents a younger teenage social group from the
age of 10 up to mid 20’s.
Creating a pop music magazine meant that I was going to be targeting
quite a mass audience as I aimed my magazine at 11-15 year old girls.
This meant the magazine would be quite popular so I had to keep
everything fresh and up to date and current in my magazine.
3. Costume
As my magazine was one which I wanted to appeal to a young
teenage audience, it was important to present my models in
similar styles to current artists. To do this I dressed my artists in
clothing which is on trend for my target audience right now in
order for them to make a personal link to the artist and see them
representing their social group, furthermore, the clothing for my
artists is very simplistic in the male artists style but bright and
formal on Katie’s clothing style.
For example, for Katie’s clothing in the magazine is similar to
Ariana Grande’s in Top of the pops.
4. Photos
When taking my images I wanted them to look professional yet have the male artists be in quite
a natural pose and have my female artists pose how my target audience would pose themselves
in photos.
I took the images using a professional digital camera from Sony in order for them to look similar
to existing pop magazines. Also in the majority of my images I had my artists smiling or I took a
picture whilst they were laughing and looked natural.
I believe that this helps represent my young teenage target audience and it means that images
do not look fake or unrealistic.
In order to make my magazine look professional I did edit the images in Photoshop using
airbrush techniques to make the models look flawless and perfect, this is similar to magazines
such as We Love Pop and Billboard.
The images being airbrushed also represents the idea that the pop music industry is flawless.
5. People
For the people I used in my magazine, I wanted to appear similar to We
Love Pop and Top of Pops magazines. To do this I used my friend Katie
for the double page spread and I edited the images to make her look like
a stereotypical pop princess like Taylor Swift but without looking too
cheesy and child like.
This meant my magazine would be able to compare to already existing
professional pop music magazines.
I wanted my magazine to feature artists which young teenage girls would
be able to look up to and have a crush on. I decided to use a solo male
artist and a boy band in the magazine. All the male models have a look
of pop music artists whilst being natural.
6. Audience Stereotypes
As I have a specific target audience of young teenage girls I have included some
stereotypical ideas which feature in existing magazines that are aimed at this
audience.
I have included images that are manipulated in order for the artists to appear perfect.
This lives up to the stereotype of young girls seeing popstars on a magazine cover
as role models and perfect.
Within the context of my magazine I have tried to include articles which are about the
current popular music artists and all the gossip for the pop music industry in order to
apply the stereotypical idea of teenage girls being interested in gossip stories.
I have included a game on my double page spread and a story about competitions
and quizzes as kids and teenagers are drawn to winning prizes.
