The document discusses the effectiveness of combining a main product (a music video) with ancillary texts (a magazine advertisement and digipak).
The creator developed three products for a track by Kaner Flex that are interconnected through consistent elements like images of the artist, color schemes, fonts, and costumes to create synergy. Feedback was positive and recognized the clear connections between the products. While a larger budget could have improved the music video, overall the combination of products achieves the goal of realistically promoting the artist across different media.
3. My Final Products #2
• I have developed three products for the track ‘Dear Lana’ by Kaner
Flex/prod. Hanz
• Throughout the development of all three products I have created synergy
believing this to be key in peoples relation between products and their
association with the artist. In addition to make sure the audience can have
a relationship within all three. Synergy is ‘the way in which different
elements of a media can conglomerate/work together to promote linked
products’.
• Through research I found that synergy was a vital element to any
professional work and so therefore I took time to make sure my products
were interlinked very clearly but also subtly to have unique connectivity.
This helped to develop each product as a unit and individually too.
• Synergy between the main ancillary texts was essential in creating
realistic/professional looking products. It was a crucial element in the
creation and I believe I successfully did this.
4. How are the main and ancillary texts
connected? #1
• The first key way in which all three are connected is through images of the
artist. I felt using images of the artist was a perfect way in creating synergy
between all three products.
• All three products show images of the artist (Tawanda), this helps the
audience recognise the artist and visually connect and build a recognition for
him. The magazine and Digipak use the same image as the front cover, this
links to the music video as some of the artist scenes is filmed in that location
• The artist dominates the frames of both the magazine advert and digipak
clearly showing that he is the key figure within all three products.
5. How are the main and ancillary texts
connected? #12
Another factor what connects all three products togerther is the colour scheme. Consistently we deliberately kept
the colour scheme of black/white and mainly red font.
Colour of red represents:
This colour can relate to anger. This is because the message our artist 'Kaner Flex' is trying get across relating to
racism, the education system and social justice system is a huge dividing issue in the world we live in today. The
colour of red also represents love and lust which represents the love he has for his music and the love of the
person he is writing this album too. We therefore think red can incorporate the two contrasting emotions he is
trying to convey in the album.
Black/White: This is a colour scheme we found to be very prominent in many examples we looked at. For example
US artists T.I- We will not / T.I – BLACK MAN , Nick Cannon – Black lives matter, Kendrick Lamar - Alright. Even UK
rap/grime artists such as Craze 24 This seems to be a stereotypical colour to be used with the issue of racism.
6. Mis-En-scence
Main artist
wearing same
costume.
His costume is the same all three products as he wears dark clothing
(black jacket jeans and trainers). Similar to artists like A$AP Rocky. This
suggests the artist is in tune with current fashion, making him more
relatable to a young audience
7. Conducted a photoshoot for magazine
advert…
• As the ‘artist’ of the music video, it was
essential to keep costume/makeup similar. This
was to create consistency and realism between
magazine advert, digipak and music video. It
also promotes Tawanda as an the ‘artist’
In order to make my digipak and advert to
look convincing as professional print
products of the rap/hip hop genre, I had to
take inspiration from real print products
The artists appearance in this magazine
advert creates a synergistic link between all
three products.
Drake,
Kanye West,
Eminem are
all good
example of
rap artists
who use
magazine
adverts as a
promotion
technique
8. To create further synergy within my digipak I
decided to use the similar style picture on the
front and back cover of digipak. We thought
that this was a interesting concept to include
on our digipak. I took influence for such a
style of synergy from a major worldwide rap
artist called ‘Drake’ and his album ‘nothing
was the same’ which unlike my product does
not use exactly the same imagery. We took
inspiration from him.
BackFront
Drake- Nothing was the same
9. • These photos are a mixture of different locations, which have and have not
appeared in the music video. I found from research of artists that not all
magazine adverts / digipaks relate directly to the music video. However our
photos are relatable to the artist himself and as it is the rap genre, the artist is
the centre of captivating the audience and it is the lyrics which will engage the
audience within the album. In addition to this from audience research we asked
about our images of the artist and they liked the idea of having just image's of
him.
Here are some examples we got this from
In his track ‘sorry blame it on me’ does not appear in this white
hoodie he is wearing for the stills. However he does again
incorporate black/white theme with red font. This shows how
relatable/ stereotypical our three products are to real media
products
10. When creating my digipak and magazine advert, we had many
designs. From audience research and real media texts we kept to the
synergistic link of the black and white filter. This is so there was a
strong link between all three products. The effect on the audience
would be that they there is a consistency and connection between all
three media products
The programme we used to create our digipak and magazine advert
on was called Photoshop.
First magazine advert design.
Photoshop layout of magazine advert (final)
11. • The Typography for the ‘Dear
Lana’ titles on my final products
was called ‘Complex’. This is the
same for the artist name. This is
so there is a simplistic view for
the audience and it does not
look unprofessional. In addition
it is another synergistic link
between the final products.
• For titles we have just used the
outlines instead of whole block
letters
Use of italics.
12. How it is not connected
• Above is our CD design from our digipak .
• Graffiti is a element which has come hand in hand with the rap culture as when
it began in the 1970s - We are incorporating this in our Digipak as it can reflect
some meanings of which our artist 'Kaner Flex' speaks about in the music video.
• Many famous artists such as 'Banksy' reflect on social/ethical problems in
everyday life, our artist 'Kaner Flex' does this similarly, however through his
lyrics. We therefore wanted to try convey a similar type of art on our CD cover.
• It gives an immediate impression what the audience will hear on the tracks.
• Below you can see some examples which real rap artists use. Also it is very clear
in the Hip hop genre.
• Our Digipak only incorporates this graffiti element
13. Perhaps to develop my products to develop synergy
and increase the stereotypical link to magazine adverts
I could of used a smaller sub-image relating to my
digipak on my magazine advert. This would help
increase directly the synergistic link between products
and I think if we were to redesign we would definitely
reconsider this as I feel we under looked this aspect.
This doesn’t necessarily conform to just the rap genre.
It could be used on all types of music genre magazine
adverts.
Below are some examples of the band ‘Kooks’ and
‘Condult’
14. Opinions of our target audience
‘I like all you're
fonts and I think
they are very bold
and clear!’
Ben, 18
‘I like all your
products and I also
think your final
products don’t relate
to just a male
audience but a female
one too!’
Mellissa, 17
‘I love how you
have made the
artist the main
selling point
throughout your
media products’
Giordano, 17
‘I like what you have
done with my track and I
am very impressed with
the music video
especially. It was what
imagined and more! Sick
fonts’
Ethan, 18
I think that if you
had more
props/money you
perhaps could of
use more camera
shots, perhaps a
drone?... That
would be cool!
Morgan, 18
15. Other Audience feedback for all three of our products! We got
opinions of what they thought and also received constructive
criticisms
16. Marketing ability to sell?
The three products, the music video, the digipak and the magazine advert are
designed to become a promo package combined. Since each product relates and
promotes each other (through the use of the artist, fonts, images, etc). I believe
my products have huge ability to sell to my audience feedback if professionally
realised.
For example if it wasn’t for the pre realise marketing of Drakes ‘nothing was the
same’ he would not of been able to sell 658,000 copies in the first week! Which
It also showed rare growth over his previous album of ‘Take Care's’ 630,000 first-
week sales .
It's the second-best opening week of the year, after Justin Timberlake's 20/20
Experience sold 968,000. And it easily bests Jay Z's opening weeks sales of
527,000.
Promotion through the internet will have played a huge part to reach the
audience in today society.
17. My personal opinion
Music video
I think the video was very successful in terms of creating synergy between
each product and showing the message of which our artist had. In addition to
this it reflects well of both the rap/hip hop genre. I do understand that if we
had a bigger budget we may have been able to add more typical conventions
of a rap video. Out of all three products I think this is the most professional.
Magazine Advert/Digipak
I think that due to the strong links with the black and white filter and the
consistent fonts used throughout, it made the print products seem like real
media products that could be seen on ad-shell‘s, in magazine or on social
network sites!
Due to mainly positive feedback of all three products, I am proud of all that I
have created throughout this project which has allowed me to excel my skills
and show me new ways of creation. I think we conform to our genre very
well.
