WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
• We created a survey aimed at our target
audience age of 16-25 year old entitled
'Indie music video expectations‘. Here we
came up with 10 questions that will be
useful in helping us decide what sort of
decisions to make in our music video. We
needed to ask these questions to make sure
the things we include are appealing to the
target audience.
FOCUS GROUP
• After creating a plan for the ideas we wanted to carry out through the
production of our music video we planned a focus group by producing a
mood-board of the type of characters and themes we will have in our music
video. Then we got together a group of males and females of the target
audience 16-25 years to answer a few questions about what they expect to see
from a music video, it was clear that the audience like to see some
performance of the indie band along with an easy to follow narrative. This
feedback was useful as we will use it to understand what the target think is
successful for an Indie rock genre music video. I filmed this focus group on an
IPad mini as it was most convenient in the school environment, I then
transferred the clips to Final Cut Pro X to merge them together. From the focus
group we decided to use the location of a stage where the band are
performing as the audience indicate that they believe performance is a strong
convention of the indie-pop genre.
QUESTIONNAIRE AND TALLY FOR
ANCILLARY
After I had created three
drafts for the magazine
poster and digipak I
devised a questionnaire
showing visuals of the
products and asking for the
opinions of ten members
of the target audience(15-
25 year olds) such as which
colour font looked more
effective, how many
images to use and whether
or not to use banners.
From this feedback I
understood that the
audience before a bold
white font and one key
image rather than a
montage of images.
After further research into magazine adverts I realised that small independent bands use
smaller A3 size adverts to advertise upcoming tours, releases and albums because they
have less funding etc. I also thought that the images should be more similar to those on
my digipak to create a firm identity for the band. Of course I had to confirm these ideas
with the target audience to make sure I was appealing to audience expectations. I asked 10
people for feedback so that I could decide upon my final magazine advert. I created a tally
for the opinions of the participants of which advert best suites the small independent indie
band ‘Your Illuminations’ and which best suites the digipak. With 8 votes to 2 the left
advert is most popular and therefore I decided on this as my final digipak to meet audience
expectations
ONE-TO-ONE VERBAL FEEDBACK
Verbal feedback:
Once we had a final completed product we decided to get some final feedback to make sure that the video is completely
understandable and representative of the Indie-pop genre. We collected 6 members of the target audience age 16-25 year
olds both male and female to have a good majority. We asked them to watch the video and feedback with their opinions of
the positives and negatives. We then asked more specific questions on certain aspects such as certain clips of the
performance or narrative to see whether we should make slight changes to improve the overall flow and understanding of
the video.
Positive feedback:
• We like the video overall and believe it works very well, ,meeting the indie genre and appeals to our target audience
• The dark and light opacity changes from performance and narrative making it easily understandable as the emotions and
acts of the characters are understood.
• Negative feedback and improvements:
• The clip then pans from the photo frame doesn’t pan to anything specific this lead to us cropping this clip and turning it
to slow motion to make it into a still shot.
• The name of the band is repeated at the end of the clip- this lead to us getting rid of this and graphs of himself and ex.
• The clip of the box fading in and out was too long- this lead to us cutting this down and adding another performance clip
in after
