2. AncillaryTexts
• As part of our coursework for A2 media, we had to create two
ancillary texts alongside our main product which was our music
video. We had to make a digipak & a magazine advert to promote
our artist/band and their music.
• Purpose of a digipak & magazine advert:
- Promote the artists/bands music
-To tell the consumer about the musician and their music
-To use art/images to express the meaning behind their album
-To promote additional details
-To attract not only fans but a wider audience

3. Indie Rock Album Covers
From my research I noticed that the
artist is regularly not seen on the front
cover. This may be due to creating
mystery between the artist and the
consumer. The audience are unable to
judge the artist/band by their
appearance and so will have to do so
by listening to their music to see what
kind of music they produce.

4. Indie Rock Magazine Adverts
The magazine adverts commonly
found in the Indie Rock genre are fairly
simplistic & so I felt it best to comply to
these conventions when creating my
own advert. I noticed that the image
on the album cover is often also used
for the advertisement in magazines
which means that the audience is
much more likely to recognise the
artist/band.
The magazine adverts also commonly
have dark images to reflect the genre.
The colour of the font is also important
at standing out and making it easily
readable by the audience and their
fans.

5. I made sure to make the information I
was trying to promote was as clear as
possible. The featured singles are
slightly bigger in size to stand out to my
audience.
The text of my album name ‘RoyalSet’ is much
bigger than any other piece of writing on the
magazine cover. To carry on the continuity
throughout all my pieces of coursework I have
made the font the same as on my album cover.
Alongside the font, I also kept the band symbol
frequent throughout my album cover and
magazine advert to connect the texts.

6. Effectiveness of the Ancillary
Texts
• I believe that the combination of my main product and my ancillary
texts were effective at expressing meaning through all three
products. In my music video it shows the two different emotions
that the character is going through (shown through the
performance and narrative) and I have tried to show this in my
album artwork by adding a 3D effect. It gives the illusion of
multiple people which I thought could represent her feelings.
• However, my two ancillary tasks have a slightly different theme to
them in comparison to my main product, something which I had
noticed while creating my digipak and magazine advert. Although I
have followed the conventions of the dark, simplistic album cover,
the colours I use to promote my artist and the effect I used do not
link to my music video.
