1. The document analyzes how a student media project challenges conventions of real music videos. It uses the song "Can't Pretend" by Tom Odell to create a narrative-based video rather than a performance-based one. 2. The narrative video follows a man who sustains an injury and is now in a wheelchair. It shows his struggle to cope with his disability and find happiness through wheelchair basketball. 3. Key shots and elements like lighting are discussed to show how they develop the narrative and themes of overcoming adversity through determination and finding acceptance. References are also made to other music videos that inspired the project.

2. Convention of the song
• Can’t Pretend by Tom Odell is in the genre of
Indie Pop, Folk music. Conventional most songs
that are under the genre above are all
performance based video with the artist sing the
song.
• We as a group wanted to challenge the way Indie
pop artist (Tom Odell) use their music video by
making are video narrative based video using
Can’t Pretend and go against the grain.

1. In this shot the lyrics are ‘I want to fight, but I can’t contend’. In the shot we see a man in a wheelchair trying to reach for
a bottle of Jack Daniels, this link well with the visual shot as it is the man trying to fight and get the bottle but can’t reach.
2. As this is a completely narrative based video there is no artist in the video therefore they is no direct representation of
the artist, but through the actor you can see that they want him to be someone to bring happiness to be people in any
position through his music.
3. In this shot the actor in the wheelchair is wear some items of clothing that you would say are indie; the hat and the coat.
Also in some respect the wheelchair also. But the thing that real make the shot illustrates how the video uses music genre
is the boarding that is behind him with all the indie graffiti.
4. In this shot you see the actor (Me) doing weights to recover from my injury an get into the new sport of Wheelchair
Basketball, this is also seen in the music video Rudimental - Waiting All Night but with a bike hand to use as a pull up bar
to get back to BMX. This shot show determination in the face of adversity and getting back into the world and find
something that makes you happy.
5. The use of a long shot suggest to the view and make the wheelchair person seem to be perceived as alone and now one
notices him as they go about their everyday life. The length of the sot also show the importance of the shot as it is just
before he fined basketball and feels accepted.
6. The lighting in this shot is used to show the emotion of the wheelchair man. We have used a stormy looking colour to
show how he is depressed and trying to get to terms with is injury , this is emphasised well by the light and how he is on
his own on the pavement.
7. The use of matching basketball kit gives the impression that they are in it together, part of a team, and know what the
other person is going through as they have gone through it themselves. Also this is how they find a escape from disability.
8. Shot 8 is another disability reference and supports evidence of point 4 and how much they life has changed due to their
injury.
9. In shot 9 it is a typical shot that is included in a indie pop narrative based video. A shot that shows the actor looking to
into a mirror, this emphasise the fact that something big happened in their life and they are reflect on it because it has a
big effect on them.

1. In this shot the lyrics are ‘Is this a hick or a bruise’. In this shot we see Katy Perry showing us here neck with a black mark which and
be perceived as a hick or a bruise which is the link between the song and the visual. I really liked this so I wanted to include this in
our video you can see this on the other Square.
2. In this shot you see Stormzy sitting on a throne the record company want Stormzy to received as the King of the World, a Role Model
an most of all a person that goes against the grain, with this tracksuit on whilst sitting in a very smart chair which doesn’t normal
work. All these attributes that I have mentioned above are all show in this shot by the body language of Stormzy and the way he is
sitting on the Throne like he deserves to be sitting.
3. In this shot you can see Stormzy wearing tracksuits and a hat which is the typical clothing for a Grime, UK rap artist, brands including
Adidas, Nike, Hype and North Face.
4. As you can see from this shot John Newman what to to re-enact the famous love story of Romeo and Juliet in his song ‘Love Me
Again’ when they get together against the odds and die together at the end of the story and song.
5. In this this shot they have used a long shot to maximum what is happening in this shot we see people having a good time and
enjoying themselves in a night club by using this long shot it link back to how the record company want the video to perceived and
also what music genre it is.
6. The use of lighting in this shot is very well used because it conveys the emotion felt in this shot. This is done by using a little bit of
light in a dark room to show that he is depressed and the is not much light (happiness in his life at the moment). We also used this
technic in are video.
7. In this shot you see two men wearing F1 clothing, this mise-en-scene represent competition to be the best. As there is a stereotype
for F1 to be very very competitive. In the shot you see two F1 drivers having a argument this reinforces the steerotype.
8. Rudimental - Waiting All Night was a big inspiration for our video as it is based an a similar story as ours is as a man has to come to
turns with the life changing injury the man has sustained and try and get back out there and find something he enjoys.
9. MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS - SAME LOVE feat. MARY LAMBERT was another big inspiration because of the message the video was
sending and that is that you can’t discriminate people that are different compared to convention. Also that there is a place for
everyone is society an that is where we came up with the idea of the the actor finding the Wheelchair basketball club and being
accepted.
