1. Question 4
How did you use new media technologies in
the construction and research, planning and
evaluation stages?
2. New media technologies
• During the construction of our music video we have used a
number of different programs and websites to do so.
Including-
-YouTube
-Twitter and Facebook
-Prezi
-Blogger
-Final Cut Pro
-Photoshop
3. -We used YouTube to research music videos for inspiration, this is
where we found Alt-J's music video for their song 'Breezeblocks' and
were inspired to use the reversed effect for when we came to edit the
murder sequence. This is where we also found Jack Garratt's music
videos on his YouTube channel that we used for references.
4. This is Jack Garratt’s YouTube Channel, by looking at
this our group learnt a number of things about the
artist and his audience.
We can see here that
his channel has well
over 23,000
subscribers. This is
not as many as some
of the mainstream
artists such as
Beyoncé who has
over 8 million. But for
Jack Garratt who is a
relatively new
electronic/alternative
artist this is an
average number of
subscribers.
This helped us to
understand how
many followers the
artist had and how
we might market our
product to potentially
new and already
existing listeners of
this artist.
We looked at the
artists videos to
understand how
many people
would watch Jack
Garratt's videos.
His most popular
video ‘Weathered’
uses a ‘home-
footage’ effect
where a group of
boys film
themselves hiking
in the mountains.
We were inspired
to use this style of
filming in our
music video.
5. -We used Facebook and twitter to further carry out research in to Jack Garratt’s fan base and to see how
popular he was in the ‘social sphere’ of the internet.
This is Jack Garratt’s Facebook page which has over
73,000 likes. On here we saw that the artist was
promoting his new album quite heavily. We learnt that
these social media platforms are a good way to
promote the artists work to a large number of people.
This is the artists Twitter page which has over 28,000
followers. We saw here that the layout of both social
network profiles are very similar and both use the cover
photo to promote the album (or new and/or upcoming
projects) This is how social media can help an artist get
peoples attention towards important events in the artists
career.
6. - We used Prezi for a number of presentations in order to display our information. We used this website mainly
for the planning stages of our music video.
Here is an example of when our group used
Prezi to display our plans for our digipack.
By using the embedding code after you
finish making or watching a Prezi you are
able to embed the presentation into a blog
post so that it is easier to view on Blogger.
Prezi gives you a demonstration
presentation which shows you step
by step how to make your own Prezi.
You can resize any of the circles or
shapes in order to fit your needs.
This is helpful if you have large
amounts of text to write.
You can also import YouTube videos
into your Prezi and have them play in
the presentation. Also you can
import photos if you wish to display
other visual information.
Prezi has helped us to plan out the
stages for the production of our
video and digipack, as well as help
show it to others. We were also able
to share the Prezi by copying the link
or embedding the code into a
websites html code.
7. - We used blogger to present our coursework and show the progression of our media texts as well as any other research
and findings.
-as soon as you log into
Blogger it will present you
with this demographic
display which shows you
where most of your page
views are coming from as
well as how many and how
often.
-on this page you can see
all your previous posts as
well as have the option to
make new ones and edit
old ones. This page is
helpful at visualizing what
posts you have made.
-on this page you can make and edit posts. It gives
you the option of adding a title so that the posts
content is easily identifiable. It also allows you to add
links, videos, pictures and adding HTML code. Adding
embedded code was particularly helpful when we
came to adding Prezis, Slide-Share and Scribd
documents to our blog posts.
Blogger is a blog-publishing website that gives access to multi-user blogs. It was developed by Pyra Labs, which
was bought by Google in 2003. Generally, the blogs are hosted by Google at a subdomain of blogspot.com.
8. - We used Final Cut Pro to edit our main product, the music video. We used a range of tools and developed our own skills
further into developing a professional looking body of video text.
Final Cut Pro is a professional editing software developed by Apple and is used by industry standard editors, such as
Angus Hall and Kirk Baxter who edited David Fincher’s 2010 film ‘The Social Network’ and won the academy award
for best film editing.
-This tool allows you to
change the contrast and
brightness in your clip.
Because our video was
entirely in black and white
we used this tool frequently
to change the brightness
depending on the mood.
-For example in this first shot the character is
looking sad and depressed. So we used a
higher contrast and a lower brightness setting
to create this darker mood to reflect his
saddened feelings.
Whereas in this shot the couple are looking
happy and cheerful. So we increased the
brightness of the clip as well as decreased the
contrast to add a faded look to the clip giving
it a ‘home video’ look. This helped show the
happier feelings of the couple.
-the blade tool allows for easy cutting
of clips and became very useful when
we came to edit the ‘murder sequence’.
It meant that we could cut clips in half
and add in ‘memory’ clips of the
couples relationship in-between the
murder clips.
The precision tool meant that we could
fine tune the length of the clips so that
they were only a few frames long.
Giving the impression that they were
gone in the blink of an eye, adding to
the chaos of the final chorus of the song
9. -We used Photoshop to create and edit our print tasks which included the Digi-Pack and a Magazine advert.
-Photo shop offers a
number of filters to add
onto photos and images.
We used one of these
filters to create the iconic
look to our digi-pack and
print tasks.
Being brand new to the software I was not sure how to use the various tools and techniques on how to create an
effective media text. Therefore I did some research on YouTube in how to use the tools I Photoshop as well as number
of other techniques and skills.
This helped me to create the professional looking digi-pack and magazine advert with my group
-an aspect of Photoshop I
was familiar with was editing
the contrast, white-balance
and highlights etc. Because I
had used similar tools in
final cut pro I was aware of
how to use these editing
techniques in photo shop to
improve the image
- A very important aspect of both print tasks was the text, as this would
display the information needed to be seen by the listener. In keeping
with our look we decided to highlight the text using a specific colour
and after effect that brought the visuals together.
- I learnt a lot using Photoshop and hopefully I will be
able to apply these skills at a higher standard later on.
