2. 1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
I have used the codes and conventions for your genre and those for an opening title sequence. I have done this through real texts I
have watched as part of my planning and research. In ‘Green Street Hooligans’ the opening scene is of Mat the main character who is
in his student accommodation and is soon to be kicked out due to false accusation of possession of class A drugs. Likewise, in ‘The
Football Factory’ you are also introduced to the main character and it instantly gives the audience a taster of how the character
(Danny Dyer) is going to be presented throughout the film. These two films had a big influence on the opening title sequence of my
own film; introducing the main character and giving you an brief understanding of the mannerism and presentation throughout the
film.
3. NARRATIVE
I have produced the plot through my own understanding of the film genre itself. I have a clear
understanding of the culture of football hooliganism through books, documentaries and little self
experience.
The way this was established in the opening sequence is through dialogue. The characters talk about
score predictions for the football match. There is also a flash back which shows a fight scene of a previous
fight that the main character had gotten himself into during a previous football match.
4. GENRE
My opening title sequence looks like the genre of the film I have chosen all
throughout. The way I have done this through Mise-en-scene, sound, continuity
and editing, cinematography/camerawork and iconography.
The next few slides will expand on this terminology.
5. CINEMATOGRAPHY/CAMERAWORK
I have used long shots throughout to show the
togetherness of the group of characters. This relates to
genre of football hooliganism because the group of men
that go to fight another group of men are very close and
have a good bond with one another. Go in and out of
each fight with each other.
I have also used hand held camera work within the opening
sequence. This links the genre. This is because it makes the
film look slightly like a documentary which can show the
audience that the scenes happening in the film are actually
factual and based on real life events. (such as marching
together to go and fight another set of fans)
6. MISE-EN-SCENE
I have used Mise-En-Scene to help specify the genre of my film. I have
done this through the shots below which relate to other main characters
in films like this. Drugging themselves up and drinking before and after
the game to hype themselves up for a fight.
7. ICONOGRAPHY
I have the same use of iconography as any other football hooligans film
would have used. Clothing and football badges. In the opening title
sequence there is evidence of the clothing labels that are relatable to
football hooligans such as Stone island, Ralph Lauren, Adidas Originals
and The North Face. Whereas for football badges, in the first scene, James
is scene wearing a Sheffield Wednesday shirt with the badge on show.
8. EDITING
Within this opening sequence we used a lot of fast paced editing to fit with the pace of
the film. We also used rhythmic editing to fit with the non-diegetic music which I think
creates a very nice effect where we incorporate jump cuts to fit with the beat of the
song.
For the actual titles of the film we decided to use a very simple but sophisticated font
and also just the colour white for them. This is because from researching other films
within this genre such as Green Street this is how the titles are and I believe it looks
very nice and works extremely well.
9. SOUND
Throughout the opening sequence there is an indie rock song played which is the genre of
music popular within this culture of football hooliganism. We made this music quite loud as
this film is a feel good film and we wanted to get the audience excited and anticipated for
what's to come from the very beginning of the film. I however, decided to tone it down when
the characters are sat in the house and just include the diegetic sound of the TV in the
background as they are all just relaxing and it makes the film feel realistic as this is a very
down to earth moment and shows their lives don't just revolve around violence.
