1. The document discusses various shots from a student's music video project set in the 1980s that was meant to resemble power ballads popular at that time. It analyzes several shots that show a boxer training to build narrative and reference genres of the era. Shots include a pre-match conference and examples of camera techniques like pulling focus.
2. Lighting effects using mist and beams were achieved through rented film equipment to further immerse the viewer in 1980s aesthetics. Mise-en-scene elements in training scenes like weights and posters establish the setting.
3. Inspiration was drawn from the Bobby Summer video "Jabba Jabba" which also tells an underdog story, as

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

2. 1. The lyrics "Rising up, back on the street"
resembles a person bettering themselves in a
place that is gritty and not very glamorous. In
this case we have a boxer who is seen as the
underdog, training in a run down gym, this
image combined with the lyrics gives meaning
to the audience which should suggests that
this boxer is fighting for his chance to be the
next best boxer in his time and he is doing this
with out much help. This relates to Andrew
Goodwin's theory of relation of visuals to the
song. It also forms the start of a narrative for
the video, in this video we were referencing a
1980/90 power ballad popular at the time.
2. In the 80s, power ballads were commonly
put out by all male bands (but not exclusively),
the record companies spent a lot of money
filming bands playing live on stage and
promoting them through the medium of music
videos, especially with the start of MTV,
typically the bands were shown playing their
instruments with the back drop of a big light
show with the suggestion of a large live
audience (not always in shot) giving the
impression of a dynamic band with a large
following. interestingly the idea of suggesting
fame and a large following was originated by
David Bowie when he invented 'Ziggy Stardust'
and went to America before he was famous
and spent a lot of the records companies
money and time creating the impression that
he was a famous (this was as early as 1972).
3. 3. The song 'Eye of the Tiger'
was released to the public in
the 80's, a time when disco
balls were used in nights clubs
and became very popular with
the youth of that time. This
shot makes it very clear that
this video is not only a video
that uses music genre, but a
music video that contains
references to the 80's.
4. This shot here is a shot of a
pre match conference. This is
not a typical scenario seen in
music videos but relating film
footage to music videos has a
long history and can been seen
in many well known videos of
the time for example "The
Body Guard" with Whitney
Huston and "Rocky" with
Sylvester Stallone . This scene
is also referencing a lot in
other genres of media such as
sport news.
4. 5. This shot is a good demonstration of
the types of camera techniques we
used when filming our music video, this
shot shows up pulling in and out of
focus, starting with the piece of metal
in focus and the boxer out of focus,
then ending up with the boxer in focus
and the piece of metal out of focus.
"Pulling Focus is a very common
technique used in all types of film
making. We wanted to draw attention
to the boxer as he is showing focus and
determination to further the narrative.
6. This shot is a great example of my
groups use of lighting, the beams of
light were made possible with the
combination of set of loaned film lights
and loaned mist machine from a film
rental company. Using mist to create
beams of light started with the advent
of the moving light in the 80's. This
effect is really common in Music Videos
and allowing the light to burn out the
image we found is also a common
effect and we used it in this set up as a
further reference to the 80's.
It makes a really nice effect and keeps
our media in the theme of 80s music
genre.
5. 7. This shot is a really good
example of mise-en-sence
because there are a number of
objects that help set the scene for
example, the weights, the gym
related poster in the back ground,
the mirror, the boxers clothes,
etc., these are all things typically
found in a gym. This scenes set up
helps develop the narrative and
also provides use with more
material for the edit where we
wanted to do some fast cutting
from scene to scene with the
music. The scenes needed visual
references to tell the story.
6. 8. This scene is a typical
training scene but our
inspiration came from Bobby
Summer's video for 'Jabba
Jabba' which successfully uses
tells the story of an under dog
which is very similar to what
we are doing.
7. 1. This shot (taken from David
Bowies 'Fashion') shows people in
a que and as the singer lays "turn
to the left" the people in the que
turn their heads to the left as if
they are listening to the singer like
he is giving out orders, this is a
metaphor to people following
fashion as a set of instruction as
that is the message the song is
trying to send to the audience.
2. This shot from Oasis - 'Don’t
look back in anger' might be a
typical way in which a record
company because the main singer
in the shot (Liam Gallagher) is
being driven around in a nice car,
this shows that they are important
and of a high social status
8. 3. This shot is from a Nirvana
music video 'Smells Like Teen
Spirit'. This shot demonstrates
the general genre conventions
of guitarists playing on stage in
front of a audience.
4. This shot is again taken from
the same music video by
Nirvana, in the shot are cheer
leaders cheering on, even
though they are being used
ironically, this is still seen a lot
of other media text e.g.
American sports, TV, Film etc.
9. 5. This shot is taken from J Cole's music
video 'Who Dat'. The whole music video is
one shot and even though the camera
movement is steady and there is a lot going
on in the shot the artist is still mainly in the
center of the shot seeking the most
attention from the audience.
6. This shot is taken from The Red Hot Chili
Peppers music video 'Dani California' and
in the music video the artist go through
each decade of pop culture music, the
decade they are on in this screen shot is
the same one that our music video is in,
the artists established this through their
use of lighting against a mist machine.
10. 7. This last screen shot is form J Cole
'G.O.M.D.' And the music video is set in
the 1800s in America during the time of
slavery. The artist really captured this
time frame well through the mise-en-
scene from the uniforms the maids are
wearing to the cutlery used by the people
eating.
