2. HOW DOES YOUR MAGAZINE TARGET THE
MARKET DEMOGRAPHIC?
Age
• In terms of age my magazine reflects mainly on its target audience which is people aged
around 16-24 or even up to 30 years old. in order for my magazine to appeal to that
particular group, I used young models and also very vibrant bold colours for my
magazine. Using young models and eye catching colours for the product represents the
age demographic as they are more likely to be attracted to the magazine or may find it
appealing. For my DPS I purposely chose to use a Kente boarder, which is a brightly
coloured cloth consisting of separate strips sewn together. This alone represents Ghana,
and also the magazine front cover has names of famous afrobeat artists and even the
name that stands out is a Ghanaian name ‘Efya Antwi’
3. GENDER
• This genre used to be male dominated but now many female artists are beginning to blow
up in the industry. Artists such as Tiwa savage, Lola Ray, Becca, all these female artists
are beginning to dominate the industry which is why I chose to use mainly female artists
for my magazine. I also chose females because I could do more with the mise-en-scene,
for example their hair, makeup and their costume. Most afrobeat songs are based on love
and men serenading women which in turn attracts a higher ratio of women listening to the
music than men. I think that although most afrobeat's artists are men, the audience who
more drawn into the genre are predominantly women. I subverted from the conventions of
an afrobeat's magazine, because although women are starting to blow in the industry
they’re not receiving enough recognition, the men still dominate which is why I chose to
have a magazine with mainly female models.
4. ETHNICITY/REGION
• In terms of ethnicity Afro beats is usually associated with people from a black African
background. Therefore all my models were black Africans and the product will most likely
appeal to that specific demographic. However the use of language in the magazine isn’t
complicated, it’s simple and straightforward therefore this ensures that readers of different
regions are able understand the content of the magazine as there are people other than
black Africans who are huge fans of afrobeat's.
