How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
How does your magazine represent the demographic (age , gender , ethnicity , region , class ,
sexuality , physical ability)?
• Age
• Immediately looking at my magazine you get the impression that its for adolescence and young adults. The way that they’re
dressed is quite common to teenagers due to its appealing nature they feel in common with the musicians , for example
musicians such as ‘AJ Tracey’ and ‘Santan Dave’ young adults who appeal to teenagers and their dressing styles they’re quite
known for the British brand ‘Trapstar’ which has now inspired young individuals to become consumers of this brand. As a
result makes them relatable to musicians who are from the grime scene Younger adults also have this type of look which is
most common to the south side of England. Grime is usually for teenagers and older their songs relate most to them it isn't
necessarily for children. So I made sure my models looked from ages sixteen onwards so it looks more relatable. Grime is
often targeted at teenagers my magazine also features teenagers which reflects the age surrounded by grime. I wanted my
magazine to be focused solely on teenagers and young adults so I had to add more information it is at same level of
importance as the image that I would use to represent my target audience however in much younger magazines there's
more pictures than information because it suits the younger audience and will often get bored quickly and its easier for
images to tell the story for the younger audiences. The colors I used were quite bright but faded in with some dark colors
this is to reinforce grime has a dark cold side to its music also suggest that my target audience is aimed at a young audience
(teenagers- young adults)
• Gender
• My magazine represents both genders as time has gone on females are beginning to increase in the grime genre , for
example the likes of ‘Paigey Cakey’. So when I used my models I made them look like someone you see on an everyday basis
because grime is from the streets. So I varied from tracksuits to bomber jackets and jeans which will appeal to both genders.
So immediately looking at my magazine my target audience could tell the difference and it would be relatable to the
individual. However I think that overall , my grime magazine conforms to the conventions in regards to gender. Reason being
my main artists that feature on my magazine are males and not females or girl groups this is to target my male target
audience . Models featured are young , single handedly displaying what my market should be attracting. My magazine may
come across as gender bias as the models are predominantly male
• Ethnicity
• As for ethnicity I feel that my magazine conformed to its conventions to an extent , reason being the artists featured on the
front cover , double page spread and contents page are of multicultural background in the grime genre there is a mixture of
genres this is showcasing that I want to attract an audience with many different nationalities this avoids social out casting
and discrimination. However a majority of grime magazines only include black and white individuals , and is vastly
dominated by those who are black throughout my magazine it follows this pattern. I’ve tried to include to include a few
ethnicities because grime as a music genre is meant for everybody as it is very easily relatable it erodes the differences
between ethnicity because all individuals can be growing through the same thing.
• Region
• Grime magazines is usually from the south-east region of England , most songs are about issues resulting the streets in
London mostly heard in urban cities. You wont hear grime in the north of England consequently most of the people who
view grime magazines are from a specific part of the country. I attempted to follow this convention by using slange terms
such as ‘sauce’ which relates to an individuals dress sense and style this is so people from other regions can get to terms
with the difference styles over England other regions , this in itself teaches other regions about the different cultures that
have emerged due to new musical styles.
• To a certain extent , my magazine conforms to the stereotypes of grime such as the clothing that certain individuals wear
mainly teenagers and young adults are dressed wearing tracksuits and hoodies this conforms to the stereotype that all these
individuals in urban cities listening to grime dress the same. Another stereotype is that most of the grime musicians are
often seen in council estates and I used that scenery in my magazine giving my audience something relatable. In addition
the colour of my magazine is a good example of conforming as the colour represents danger often this gave this vibe from
grime due to the more serious colours being used it appeals to a more mature young adults rather then children. I used the
colour red repeatedly throughout my magazine , as a way of targeting the older audience (teenagers). This is a stereotype
because the colour is often associated with the target audience and music genre and the models in my magazine would be
seen as deviant by society by the way they're dressed raising assumptions. I chose to conform to these conventions because
if I didn’t it wouldn’t represent the demographic I wanted.
