The document discusses representations of gender, age, race, and social class in a magazine focused on electronic music genres like dubstep and drum and bass. It notes that the magazine portrays a male-dominated genre with limited female representation. Younger audiences are shown to be creative rather than stereotyped. While the music is portrayed as largely white/British, racially inclusive language is used. The social representation depicts an educated, urban youth culture surrounded by dance music as a modern force.

2. Male representation
• My media product represents a male
dominated genre of music, for example there
are limited images of females within the
magazine, and when they are used, it isn’t too
clear that they are female. This shows the
male social group to be very down to earth
and wanting to be part of a modern society.
This is due to the magazines genre been seen
as a “driving force” for modern day music
styles.
3.
4. Female representation
• The women represented in the
magazine are only seen to be there for
the party aspect of the musical genre,
this then means that women are
objectified as more of a sex toy amongst
the genre, this can be mirrored in real
media products such as Mixmag, that
sexualize women as objects by
exploiting them. I decided not to
sexualize women, by keeping them
wearing clothing to help other
representations of women.
5. Age representation
Stereotypes of modern teenagers aren’t seen to be very good, for
example “hoodies” and that the youth will be spending their time on
street corners intimidating older people. I chose to fight against this
stereotype, for example including a “create yourself” portion of the
magazine, this shows the creative side of a younger audience and how
they can aspire to make their way in the world, battling against age
stereotypes. Another stereotype force on young females is the lack of
clothing they wear. In my magazine the images that are used of
women are showing very little skin, again showing that not all modern
stereotypes are correct.
Some other modern stereotypes see very young people (16 – 21) to
want to be at festivals or many types of gigs, this is mirrored in my
magazine, as it includes a “top 10 artists for this year” and “new
announcements for relentless nass”.
6. Race Representation
• The magazine conveys a very “white” race to the
magazine, as a stereotype for the dance/rave industry
is seen as a white music genre. I incorporated this into
my magazine as it would then appeal to the readers of
the magazine. The lexis that I used wouldn’t be
categorized by race, as it would appeal to both white
and non white people. This then shows that it can be a
very “British” genre of music, this would be due to the
fact dubstep, drum and bass and other subgenres were
created in London. This is also mirrored in the
quantitive research that told me that most of which are
of white (british) ethnicity, showing that the magazine
is to be based around that.
7. Social Representation
• The lexis within the magazine is very formal, there is little
to non regional dialect within the main body of text, so the
register of the piece is fairly average. This then would mean
that the social representation of the magazine would be to
younger adults who are mature enough to understand key
terms ie “oscillators” which was used in the DIY:DnB
section. This then also represents the society that they live
in to be heavily surrounded by the dance industry, and how
that is to be the newer driving force within the modern
society. With the clothes used looking quite rural and
modern, it shows that the society today are constantly
evolving, much like music and fashion. This is mirrored
when the magazine mentions “top 10 dnb t shirts of 2013”
showing the evolution within the clothing industry.
