1. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT REPRESENT
PARTICULAR SOCIAL GROUPS ?
By Idia Igiehon
2. AGE
The ‘clean’ and professional theme my magazine had
could be said to represent the demographic as it
seems more appeaseable and easier to read, which
could suggest that the magazine is aimed towards
older audiences around the age 18-30. This is
understandable as the lyrics and topic subjects can
be mature and targeted for he pacific audience.
The colour scheme of the
magazine can also
represent the demographic
as the dark colours
connote seriousness and
professionalism that
younger audience might
not find so appealing.
However the models I used
were teenagers so it could
be argued that the
magazine is aimed towards
a younger audience as they
could be seen or looked as
“role models”.
3. GENDER
I believe that my magazine conforms to the conventions towards the
demographic of hip hop music, that the magazine is aimed towards males.
The dark colours and the overall theme I used for my magazine share very
masculine undertones. However, it could be argued that the product is
aimed towards both genders; the models I used
(both male and females) were very
attractive and there are an equal
number of male and females
models which could appeal to all
genders. Furthermore, this could
link to the fact that this genre is
mainly male dominated as there is
only one female model in my
magazine.
4. ETHNICITY
I think that overall my magazine conforms
to the conventions for ethnicity. The colour
schemes, themes and featured articles and
stories are similar to hip hop magazine
which are targeted to African audiences.
However, professional magazines such as
XXL feature artists who are African, which
my magazine conforms to but does
subvert to the stereotype that only African
people listen to hip hop as some of the
artist mention within my magazine are not
African or full African.
