The media product, a music magazine called "Clique", represents several social groups through its content and design. It targets middle and lower class youth between 15-20 years old, as evidenced by the simplistic design, hoodie-clad cover star, and use of slang language. The magazine primarily features male, black UK rap artists, reflecting the dominance of those groups within the genre. However, exclusively focusing on males risks excluding female audience members.
2. Social class
In my music magazine “Clique” I have decided to represent the type of
social group that will listen to UK Rap by the image given in the front cover
and making it very simplistic and raw which relates to UK Rap because this
is also a raw type of music genre. Also the image implies “Clique” is
targeted at a young audience
This shows the music magazine is targeted at middle and lower class
people because of the vocabulary within the magazine also the dress code
of the cover of the cover star is associated within these two types of social
class.
3. Dress code
We can also identify the music magazine as being UK Rap because of the
dress code of the cover stars (hoodies and tracksuits) as this is associated
with my genre when talking about the UK rap fashion and culture.
4. Gender
My music magazine “Clique” represents a male dominated magazine as
the cover star is male and all the images used are males. However doing
this excludes the female audience and may cause them not to purchase my
magazine as they may not feel a part of the genre as it only includes male
artists.
5. Ethnicity
Throughout my music magazine I have chosen to use cover stars that are
black as this represents the cultural background of UK Rap because a large
majority of artists from the UK Rap genre are from this ethnicity, therefore
I thought it would be appropriate to use black cover stars within my
magazine so it can help the reader identify that the music magazine
belongs to a certain genre.
6. Language
In my music magazine I have included language that is appropriate to this
genre as shown below for example in the interview with my cover star he
uses swear words such as “fucking” and uses slang words such as “cah”
that relates to the UK Rap culture and is quite common within UK Rap
lyrics that signifies the genre of music my magazine is covering.
7. Age
Throughout the music magazine it is implied that the age of the target
audience is quite young as the cover stars themselves look young. The
approximate age this may target would be between the ages of 15-20,
therefore entice this age group to buy this magazine the age of the target
audience is also implied by the type of clothing the cover star is wearing as
it associates a certain age group to this type of dress code. Also the text
and font within the magazine appeals to a younger age group as it
consists of “slang” which is very popular within this age group and culture.
