- How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My A2 coursework consisted of a main task - a music video, and two ancillary tasks - a
digipak and a magazine advertisement.

During the research and planning stages it was extremely important that my partner and I
kept to the same house style. This created a visual link between all our products where
each product can help sell the other, in addition to looking as professional as possible. The
purpose of the ancillary tasks were to promote and raise awareness of the single release
which was the music video.

My partner and I wanted to create a link through all of our products by basing them around
one theme that could run throughout. As we did secondary research into our artists
Secondhand Serenade, we found out that the majority of the songs were about love and
relationships, more notably his marriage and divorce. It was easier to portray this through
the music video as we created our own narrative of a couple going through happy and also
challenging times.

However, for the digipak we wanted to use props as this was favoured in our questionnaire
results. We spent a lot of time thinking about what kind of props would portray love and
relationships but also in a creative way. We wanted something that would tie in with the
vintage theme we were using, and also have deeper connotations. We finally decided to
use a globe as the main prop for our digipak. This ties in with the theme of love and
relationships as it further portrays the idea that love and emotions can be experienced
anywhere in the world - its universal - as well as hinting at the idea that there is no
geographical restrictions or boundaries confining your emotions.

Furthermore, for the inside of the digipak we used photographs from our magazine
advertisement. This is a subtle link between the two products and may not be as easily
noticed, however as the producers we wanted to use the same photograph to help our
products support eachother.

For our magazine advertisement we still wanted to use the idea of journeys so we took a
photograph of a country road. The road bends off into the distance which makes it seem
ambiguous as well as our models facing away from the camera. We used a road as this is
another form of travel/journey. It could also be argued that the road leads to somewhere,
yet it is up to the audience to put their own meaning to it.

To make our main task and ancillary tasks combine well together we used the same colour
scheme and fonts to ensure the house style was consistent throughout. The way in which
we helped create a link between our project is relying heavily of the theme of journeys,
which connote to the emotional journey of love which can be explored when listening to
the album.
