HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION
OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND
ANCILLARY TEXTS?
EVALUATION TW)
▸Creating a recognisable brand was essential for the texts I constructed, Lukas
Stoker had to have an image which could be replicated from adverts to gigs. The
magazine advert and digipak had to be similar in many ways to create a
subconscious link for the consumer, for example if they saw the advert it should
be very similar in branding to the digipak so they would recognise the album
cover. A distinctive look was needed to represent Lukas Stoker, I chose to use a
design with a repeated pattern of eyes as well tentacles on top. The ancillary
texts and music video needed to share a style as it is essential that my three
media products follow similar branding. The aesthetic feel of the products should
be the same throughout. I believe this was achieved by using pieces from the
music video in the ancillary products which created a sense of verisimilitude
similar to a ‘real’ industry product. An example of this is the mid shot scene
where the female dancer’s emotionless eyes are seen (0:07-0:12). I took
inspiration from this scene to use her emotionless eyes as a repeated
background which can mediate her being detached and never seeing the male
singer (Lukas Stoker) or could be interpreted that the eyes are the pressure of
crowds watching Lukas Stoker.
EVALUATION TWO
▸ Both the digipak and magazine advert are
similar in their design and presentation. Both
of them conform to a simplistic yet surreal
look which is achieved by using very limited
colour and bold lines to create a drawn comic
like style. The draft ancillary texts I made
used the same understated colours but the
art itself was not detailed enough so the
feedback I received said that I needed to
make it more detailed which I obliged. I broke
convention by not placing the artist on the
album cover and using art instead but this is
a convention I followed up with the magazine
advert creating a brand without an image of
the artist himself.
EVALUATION TWO
▸ Throughout the video there are scenes
with and without eye contact from the
performers. The scenes with eye
contact mediate a sense of emotion
and involvement with the audience; I
attempted to recreate this with the art
used for the magazine advert and
digipak. The completely open eyes
used in the digipak and magazine
advert are inspired by the female
performers emotionless stare into the
camera which conveys an eery feeling
as well as a sadness as the male
singer cannot get to her shown by her
vacant look. The branding is shaped
around this emotionless stare.
EVALUATION TWO
▸I chose to go against Dyer’s theory of having a
‘star image’ because I felt Lukas Stoker should
be represented by a style which can be used for
other ancillary texts rather than by an image of
himself. This constructs a more mysterious style
for the artist and a fanbase which does not
concentrate on looks but on his music.
‣The record label logo is featured on both my
ancillary texts because this is a generic
convention of digipaks and magazine adverts.
The logo is not used in the video however the
artist is signed to the label therefore it is property
of the record label and does not need to be
proven by the logo. The logo used in the
ancillary texts creates a brand as it is on all other
texts which ties it together and gives the target
audience a recognisable logo to find the music.

  • 1. EVALUATI HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN PRODUCT AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
  • 2. EVALUATION TW) ▸Creating a recognisable brand was essential for the texts I constructed, Lukas Stoker had to have an image which could be replicated from adverts to gigs. The magazine advert and digipak had to be similar in many ways to create a subconscious link for the consumer, for example if they saw the advert it should be very similar in branding to the digipak so they would recognise the album cover. A distinctive look was needed to represent Lukas Stoker, I chose to use a design with a repeated pattern of eyes as well tentacles on top. The ancillary texts and music video needed to share a style as it is essential that my three media products follow similar branding. The aesthetic feel of the products should be the same throughout. I believe this was achieved by using pieces from the music video in the ancillary products which created a sense of verisimilitude similar to a ‘real’ industry product. An example of this is the mid shot scene where the female dancer’s emotionless eyes are seen (0:07-0:12). I took inspiration from this scene to use her emotionless eyes as a repeated background which can mediate her being detached and never seeing the male singer (Lukas Stoker) or could be interpreted that the eyes are the pressure of crowds watching Lukas Stoker.
  • 3. EVALUATION TWO ▸ Both the digipak and magazine advert are similar in their design and presentation. Both of them conform to a simplistic yet surreal look which is achieved by using very limited colour and bold lines to create a drawn comic like style. The draft ancillary texts I made used the same understated colours but the art itself was not detailed enough so the feedback I received said that I needed to make it more detailed which I obliged. I broke convention by not placing the artist on the album cover and using art instead but this is a convention I followed up with the magazine advert creating a brand without an image of the artist himself.
  • 4. EVALUATION TWO ▸ Throughout the video there are scenes with and without eye contact from the performers. The scenes with eye contact mediate a sense of emotion and involvement with the audience; I attempted to recreate this with the art used for the magazine advert and digipak. The completely open eyes used in the digipak and magazine advert are inspired by the female performers emotionless stare into the camera which conveys an eery feeling as well as a sadness as the male singer cannot get to her shown by her vacant look. The branding is shaped around this emotionless stare.
  • 5. EVALUATION TWO ▸I chose to go against Dyer’s theory of having a ‘star image’ because I felt Lukas Stoker should be represented by a style which can be used for other ancillary texts rather than by an image of himself. This constructs a more mysterious style for the artist and a fanbase which does not concentrate on looks but on his music. ‣The record label logo is featured on both my ancillary texts because this is a generic convention of digipaks and magazine adverts. The logo is not used in the video however the artist is signed to the label therefore it is property of the record label and does not need to be proven by the logo. The logo used in the ancillary texts creates a brand as it is on all other texts which ties it together and gives the target audience a recognisable logo to find the music.
