Analysis Of Paley And Aquinas
Analysis of Paley and Aquinas Readings in Topic 4
Introduction
In the argument, The Argument From Design from Natural Theology, William Paley argues that
living things are like watches in one crucial respect: both exhibit design, the universe with
everything in it. Paley thinks that people assume that the universe works for a purpose like the
watch does. So, people would reasonably conclude that the universe has a designer or creator, like
the watch does, God. Although, atheists deny that the universe is designed. But, shouldn t there be
some knowledgeable or intelligent creator to guide us towards our purpose to function in life?
In the article, The Five Ways, from Summa Theologica, Thomas Aquinas argues whether God
exists, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Summary
William Paley found a watch on the ground and assumed that the watch was put together for a
purpose. His arguments, then, lead towards the teleological argument, which starts from relatively
specific observations to the crucial notion of purpose where there is an intelligent cause to the
universe. Paley s whole argument discusses how there must be a maker of the universe since there
is a maker of the watch, which must be God. In contrast, a telescope has a designer, so an eye
must also have a designer,
The end is the same; the means are the same. The purpose in both is alike; the contrivance for
accomplishing that purpose is both alike: The lenses of the telescope, and the humours of the eye
bear a complete resemblance to one another, in their figure their position; and in their power over
the rays of light... How is it possible, under circumstances of such close affinity, and under the
operation of equal evidence, to exclude contrivance from one, yet to acknowledge the proof of
contrivance having been employed, as the plainest and clearest of all propositions in the other?...
(Paley, p.30).
If the watch could somehow reproduce, Paley still would not question that the watch still had
originated from some intelligent designer. Like the watch, he thinks the universe also works for a
purpose. Paley proscribes design as foresight, which is connected with purpose, however, the
purpose is not the same as the function. It is said to be

The Nurse Provider s Role As A Nurse Assistant
As healthcare providers, our role is to ensure the safety well being of our patients and advocate
appropriately with their best interest in mind. While it is important to be our patient s advocate, we
must also stay within the parameters that are set by our state governing boards. Although the 15 y/o
is a runaway, it is more important that we assess the well being of the teen mom, her infant, and
maintain a trusting patient provider relationship. I would ask the NurseManager to room the patient
and baby, and keep others out of the room until after I perform a full physical on both of them. The
time in the exam room will allow for further investigation of the current situation.

Character Analysis Of The Movie, Edward Cole
n my opinion, I believe that they are both intelligent, but in different ways. Carter James is really
calm, learned everything on his own, and actually thinks on what he is going to say. On like
Edward Cole, he s educated, and doesn t care on what he has to say. They both have great minds,
but expressed differently. Edward is based of on money which leads to him not caring. I feel
like they are both smart, but Carter is more smart because he learned a lot of things on his own
and he just loved history. History leads to a lot of knowledge because you get to learn about
many thing that happened in the past. He s more of a self reliance man because he relies on
himself to get past anything. Edward Cole is more of a guy who was educated, but often shown
like he wasn t. Edward has lots of money which often depends on. Due to money, he doesn t
really care about others, but himself. Money is the outcome of his education, but that all he has
in his life. At the beginning of the movie, could you label Edward cole a bully? Why? I could
label Edward Cole as a bully, because he didn t care on what he said to others. He just expressed
the way he wanted and didn t care on what others thought of it. He often disrespect and showed
this kind of rudeness to others, he made statements like kiss my ass and other rude comments. He
would just blur anything out without carrying. Edward Cole doesn t really cope with anyone, so he
lets his mind speak out loud. He didn t care about his thoughts

Heartbeat By David Yoo Summary
Heartbeat is a short story by David Yoo that illustrates how a skinny sixteen year old struggles to
fit in and be liked by his classmates. The story takes place in an American high school during
modern times, as the text states that he returned to school , and it is mentioned in the text that he
is eating a mini Snickers bar, implying that he lives fairly close to the present. Dave s nickname is
Heartbeat because his friends swear that you can actually see the pulse on my bare chest. When his
crush, Sarah, comments on how skinny he is, Heartbeat tries to gain weight by working out,
adjusting his diet, and eliminating as much movement as possible. However, nothing works until he

The Manager Conducts Team Building Activities
The manager conducts team building activities from time to time. One of these activities
includes Stereotype Party, meant to reduce or eliminate Stereotypes and related issues such as
Labeling. This activity can be done by a small, medium or a large group. In this activity, the
participants are given name tags where they are asked to write personality types and after doing
that are asked to put them on the back of their colleagues where they will be able to see every
ones tag except theirs. Nobody knows the tag on their back, but is able to see the others tag. The
manager then asked each participant to figure out the type of personality on their back and this he
does by asking the questions about other participants, such as Am I a man? ... Show more content on

In this regard, the manager had instituted a companywide team building initiative that is aimed at
changing the employees mind set about diversity; address intersections of diversity, influence on
culture, gender as well as age differences and attitudes and performance as well as overall team
dynamics, reduce tension and help employees work together and enhance collaboration,
understanding as well as innovation and trust among the employees. The manager had clear goals
expected outcome as well as implementation process. According to King et al., (2010), naturally, the
effectiveness of such training is closely linked to the goals, outcomes and implementation.
There instances where the manager fails to effectively communicate to the employees. Blunt is an
Australian manager and as afore mentioned, the company has over one hundred employees from
different backgrounds. The company has more than 20 employees from South East Asia and out
of them eight are Chinese. As much as the manager expects these employees top perform, the
employees themselves feel subjected to the manager and look at him as some sort of God. The
Chinese background is collective where a person is seen as having no rights except those which
society allows them to enjoy (Biddle, 2012). The manager is ineffective in communicating to this
section of the work force as they have trouble reconciling their traditional roles and their new found
duties. Communication is a very critical

Juvenile Corrections Research Paper
Of course, we are all familiar with the overcrowding in our prisons, well within the last decade or
so we have seen an increase in how many juveniles are now being tried as an adult then ending up
in our adult prison system. Statistics show that instead of helping the youth of our nation, the
justice system has given up on them and parents are tired of their children sentenced to a life in
prison.
What happened to the fundamentals of our correction system? Are we not supposed to try and
reform them while deterring them from future criminal behavior? If we could apply the practices
implemented towards helping youth offenders we could see a decrease in how many children we
see locked up with adults. There are programs that teach new cognitive skill methods that show
alternative outcomes geared specifically towards determent from poor decision making that has
resulted in repeat offenders.
Professionals within the criminal justice system can t even find middle ground, leaving them
divided against one another in deed as well as perspective. Making our system of criminal justice a

Self injury is an major issue in our society and schools need to do more to help teens handle

Cant Hardly Wait Compared To The Canterbury Tales
Canterbury Tales Compare/Contrast Essay
Satire as described by the Webster dictionary is a way of using humor to show the weaknesses or
bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc. One of the first examples of satirical English
writing was Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales. The CanterburyTales revolve around an
eclectic group of pilgrims on a religious journey to St. Thomas Beckett s shrine . The true intent
of this classic tale was to expose all of 14th century England to the corruptness of the cast system
in London. Chaucer executed his purpose by including characters of various statures into his
story and discreetly criticizing them by using humor. In doing so he also criticized the morals of
aristocracy at that time. Centuries later Chaucer s interpretation of society continues to be used
in literature and other forms of art today. Can t Hardly Wait is an example of a film that
embodies Chaucer s ideas. This cheesy 1990s classic romance is set at a high school graduation
party. The main plot of a boy trying to get his dream girl is simply an unimportant factor compared
to screenwriter Deborah Kaplan s true purpose: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Knight as described by Chaucer, is a man of great stature. Like other knights of this time, he
was usually accompanied by royalty and had embarked with many a noble host (Canterbury 62).
The Knight was a far cry from the corrupt characters in this tale because unlike them, he did not
abuse his power. The attire of the Knight proved that he not only worked hard but also lived
modestly. Although he was wealthy, his cloaks did not readily support that fact, for He wore a
fustian tunic stained and dark (Canterbury 77). He was so admired for his chivalrous nature that
many referred to him as a true, perfect gentle knight (Canterbury

Yellow Woman And A Beauty Of The Spirit Summary
Silko uses a unique structure in her essay Yellow Woman and a Beauty of the Spirit to help her
get her points across to the reader. She uses the effectiveness of the structure to make her points
clear, convincing, but also engaging. She begins the essay by talking about how she is different.
She explains the past of her Great Grandfather to help explain why she is different. She continues
to talk about other family members throughout the essay that influenced her. These examples
help make her points clear and convincing. The structure is effective because of the evidence
provided in her stories that show how she overcame the feeling that she is different. Silko begins
her essay saying how she was different from her playmates as a child. From the time I was a
small child, I was aware that I was different. I looked different from my playmates. My two sisters
looked different too. After she stated this, she talks about why she was different from the other

Screwtape Letters Analysis
The Screwtape Letters
The Screwtape Letters is a thought provoking book that details how easily humans are ensnared by
the Enemy. The enticement of the world seems so appealing to human, however, C.S. Lewis makes
it very clear that the enticement in the world is only temporary, and is ultimately a tactic of the
Enemy. Often times, temptation creeps into our minds unexpectedly, but temptation s effects are
deadly. The Enemy will stop at nothing to tempt us, but God s Word says that He will not tempt you
beyond what you can bear, and when temptation comes, God will provide a way out (1 Corinthians
10:13).
Throughout the Screwtape Letters, the character Screwtape writes letters to his nephew,
Wormwood. The reader is propelled into the life of the Patient; and Screwtape makes it clear to
Wormwood that he must stop at nothing to get the Patient from focusing on his relationship with
God, and this becomes the motivation and obsession behind every note Screwtape writes. However,
Screwtape does not only tell Wormwood to tempt the Patient in only one... Show more content on

Screwtape also tries to use lust as a distraction in the Patient s life. Being that the Patient is young
and unmarried, Screwtape is to highlight lusts to keep his burning desire to be for women, and not
for the One who gave him life. This approach was very clever, but believers must realize that the
weapons we fight with are not the weapons of this world. Not only that, but Screwtape encourages
Wormwood to not let the Patient s Christianity shine through. That being said, the Patient would
become self conscious about his relationship with God, thus getting him to focus on self. This
tactic, however, is nothing new. Satan tries nothing new, but it is important for us to know how to
resist the devil, and that is through prayer, and the reading of God s

Symbols In Midaq Alley
Naguib Mahfouz was a prestigious Egyptian writer, who wrote several notable novels, such as
Midaq Alley (1947) and The Cairo Trilogy . He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988.

Essay On Invasive Species
Introduction Paragraph:
What is an invasive species? I believe an invasive species is an animal that has either come to a
new environment on purpose or accident and caused harm by doing so. I became interested in
this topic because animals are interesting to me. I did not consider any other topics. When I saw
the topic I immediately went to research it. I knew bits and pieces of some stories invasive species
give. New invasive species come every day because of humans and their ideas on what is best.
The Search:
When searching this subject, all I searched for on google was invasive species. Looking at the

The Fruits of My Search: My biggest concern and surprise that caught me off guard when

enemy to me by the end because of what they have caused. The article I cited above states,
Approximately 42% of Threatened or Endangered species are at risk primarily due to invasive
species. This is nerve racking. It is basically saying that 42% of threatened and endangered species
became that way because of invasive species. Another concept that I thought was interesting, was
the fact that us humans are invasive. Invasive species are species that invade a new habitat. We
have done that many times. Think of the place we are right now, North America. Explorers came to
north america to find native americans and harsh conditions, so obviously we were not striving in
the new land. With time our population grew and soon we drove out almost the entire native
american existence. One thing that caused a personal experience of mine

The Impact Of Rock And Roll On Society
Throughout the entire history of Rock and Roll, it is very apparent just how great of an impact
social and cultural change has made on the development of the genre. Society is such a powerful
entity and its influences on art are very often overlooked. If one person has the ability to
independently influence and conduct change, imagine the available influence that is made possible
with society as a whole during notable periods of development and change throughout the history
of America. As discussed in this paper, music has been a collaborative development with several
determining factors. Society, including both black and white individuals, has previously and
continues to develop music into a powerful and meaningful art form. Music allows society an
outlet to express their feelings of sorrow, confusion, and happiness. Rock and Rollcontains several
umbrella sub genres that have made major impacts on the music that is known and enjoyed today.
It is one of the best ways in which to universally connect with other people throughout the world
with common and similar feelings. It helps many people feel as though they are not alone and there
are others out there who are going through similar experiences as they are.
The influence on Rock and Roll by the music that the first Africans brought to the United States is
not always discussed but had a very important impact on the development of this ever growing
genre. This transplanted African music wasn t exactly boogie woogie or

The Unknown Citizen Explication Essay

The Unknown Citizen
By W. H. Auden
Several conflicts are dramatized in The Unknown Citizen, the most prominent being: conformity of
the middle class, government manipulation, and the loss of individualism to the standards of an
average citizen. The speaker of this poem is non traditional as the poem is, in fact, an inscription
on a marble monument erected by the State. The inscription is dedicated to a JS/07 M 378
presumably, The Unknown Citizen, although this term only appears in the title. The Unknown
Citizen is essentially an elegy, a lament for the dead, written by either a government official or a
strong believer in the government. This becomes clear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Among his praises, for example: When there was peace, he was for peace: when there was war,
he went (24). In this, it becomes clear to the reader that you do not want to be an average
citizen; you do not want this to be your elegy. Some critics argue this, however, as Auden stating
that there is nothing disgraceful in being unknown. The poem is, above all, a satire of the way
conformity hinders the individual and leaves ridiculous and solely external distinctions between
human beings. Auden presents an allegory in The Unknown Citizen that begins even before the
poem itself. The phrase Unknown Citizen appears only once in the title. This term is an
immediate allusion to and parody of the Unknown Soldier, especially considering the details of
who the poem is dedicated to and the fact that it is found on a marble monument, much like those
one might expect to see in Washington, D.C. where the United States is home to the Tomb of the
Unknown Soldier. The Unknown Solider is a soldier who cannot be recognized after being found
in battle. This sometimes controversial idea can be interpreted to mean that many people die as
unknowns because they lived uninfluential lives. Aside from this large allegory, the poem uses
only a few rhetorical devices. In line four, for example, ...in the modern sense of an old fashioned
word, he was a saint is quite an exaggeration because being one against whom there was no official
complaint is hardly saintly (2). Another

Fratiglioni, Gatz, McArdle, Pederson state, there are three hypotheses that might explain the
association (Jorm, 2001). The first is that depression is a symptom that indicates the onset of
dementia, also known as a prodromal feature. The second is that the two are independent illnesses;
however, depression causes cognitive deficits, which lead to an earlier onset of dementia. The last
argues that depression causes damage in the hippocampus, which then leads to dementia. Some
studies have found depression to be a prodrome of dementia. One specifically found that depression
arises due to neuropathological damages during the course of dementia, and another showed that
people with late onset depression had greater frontal lobe atrophy than controls and those with early
onset depression. On the other hand, it has been shown that a history of depression increases the
risk of dementia later in life. There is some evidence that the earlier the onset of depression, the
greater the likelihood is of developing dementia later; however, this only held true in individuals
with little education. The disagreement and contradiction in previous studies call for further
experimentation, primarily to determine whether a history of depression significantly predicted the
likelihood of having dementia later in life (Brommelhoff et al., 2009). Researchers examined the
difference in the number of years

One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich Analysis
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn s One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich can be seen as a testament to
the spirit of the Russian people by exposing the suffering and struggles of the Gulag. Solzhenitsyn
offers an authentic perspective of the hierarchy that controls the Gulag, the brutality of the
weather, and the inhumane work hours. Alyoshka can be seen as a symbol for faith and religion,
as his faith in God allows him to proceed through his long work day without being weighed down
by the hardships of life in the Gulag. The reader understands Solzhenitsyn s experiences as a
prisoner through Shukhov s experiences. Through Fetyukov, Solzhenitsyn reveals that for some
prisoners, dignity is the price of survival. Solzhenitsyn s alternative narrative style exposes, to the
reader, the subconscious thoughts of Shukhov and depicts his feelings towards other characters.
The novelOne Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovichconveys the extent that the negative aspects,
unjust suffering, and struggles in the Gulag alter the human spirit. as the characters human Spirit
adapted seamlessly to the Gulag environment, remains the same or fades in the Gulag. From the
beginning of the novel, the reader is introduced to the impact of religion and its value in the
Gulag. Alyoshka relies heavily on faith even when it s tested. He uses his faith to see the Gulag as
a barrier that one must overcome in his life. He thought that he would survive. [He would] stick it

Howard County Flood Analysis
Flooding is one of the many risks that people and their private properties assume when they
consider living in a specific geographic location. This is true for the residents of Howard County,
as they live near the Chesapeake Bay, whose tributaries branch off into smaller rivers, streams
and lakes. Due to the fact that Howard County is more developed in the southeast and more rural
in the west, there is a correlation between the risk of flooding and the presence of human
development. (any cite here?) Natural factors play an integral role in determining the probability
of flooding in a particular section of the county as well. People and their private properties are
highly impacted by flooding, as it can cause death and injuries to humans... Show more content on

government has several restrictions and permit requirements that prevent or at least make it more
difficult for people to establish (build?) their private properties in flood prone areas. For instance,
Howard County has restrictions that a resident s private property has to be within the County

officials prior to altering the exterior of their house in any way to ensure that the project is in

private properties can be better protected from the financial risk of flooding if they acquire flood
insurance, which is mandatory for certain high risk areas (called Special Flood Hazard Areas) and

Chile And The Us Banking Industry
The present working paper is referred to the analysis of some financial benefits that banking
institutions would be receiving as Too Big to Fail (TBTF) banks. The request is whether those
institutions are constantly subsided from governments or it is merely a hypothetical idea. For those
purposes, it is analyzed the Chilean banking industry to disclose the implicit subsidy in the South
American country. In order to answer the posited questions, first it is cited some similarities
between Chile and the US banking industry, and then how it evolved to this point after several
financial crises. Secondly, it is examined potential implicit guaranties of Chile s TBTF banks. In
that sense, it is analyzed the concentration and interconnection in Chile. Then, it is analyzed those
expected financial benefits that flow to the TBTF banks. Specifically, two of the likely financial
benefits. Primarily, the over the counter (OTC) derivatives, and then repurchases agreements in the
banking industry, especially in events of default, insolvency, and bankruptcy. Thirdly and lastly, it
is stated some remedies that I can propose to solve these issues, including the Subsidy Reserve Act,
as adapted for the Chilean banking industry, among others. As a result, policymakers, congressmen,
local and international organizations, and governments would be able to use this work for the
financial and banking reform. At the end, the purpose is bringing some balance between TBTF

Organizational Dynamics of Implementing Business Intelligence Initiatives
Business intelligence is the ability of a business to be able to extract actionable insight from
business as well as market data, which is used to make better decisions in business; and to improve
the corporate performance of the business. Business intelligence must exist for businesses in the
world today to survive(Electrosmard Ltd). Almost every business today worth its salt is looking
for the appropriate business intelligence technology in order to survive in today s fiercely
competitive world. Business intelligence also helps companies and businesses to survive during
hard economic times. During such periods, it is not a surprise to find companies still spending on
the processes of business intelligence because without such solutions, there is no business at all. In
any case, there is a business; it is most likely on the decline in terms of productivity and revenues.
Business intelligence is not a onetime thing; it is an ongoing process. Business intelligence goes on
as long as the business is still running; the business intelligence continues to exist too.
Business intelligence involves techniques based on computers that are used in the identification,
extraction, as well as the analysis of business data(Electrosmart Ltd). The business data in this case
could be revenue from sales made from given products, could also be sales that a given department
has made, or

The Lincoln Electric Company Essay
The Lincoln Electric Company was founded in 1895 by John C. Lincoln, who then partnered with
his younger brother James in 1907. The focus of the company originally was manufacturing electric
motors, which then expanded to include battery chargers and in the early 1900 s to portable
welding machines. (Lincoln Electric, 2016) The company was founded originally on a construct of
Christian values, which may have played a role in creating the dominant culture of the corporation.
(Sharplin) This paper presents an evaluative analysis of the business case study presented by Arthur
Sharplin, with a focus on determining the overall corporate culture of Lincoln Electric categorically.
John and James Lincoln professed to be devout Christians and embodied their faith in their
treatment of their employees early on in the company. While a clear hierarchy and protection of
management control was evident in their organizational structure, they ensured that employees had
regular access to the management team both formally and informally. Management roles may have
been protected and controlled but they were seen strictly as tasks to perform just as every other
employee was assigned their tasks. In this respect the workplace was and remains designed strictly
around function, no perks exist for management that do not exist for every employee. (Sharplin)
This example points to the importance of a people oriented culture in the workplace and is almost
egalitarian in nature. (Flat World Knowledge,

An Idea That Protects A Proprietor s Land Title
Indefeasibility Introduction Indefeasibility of title is an idea that protects a proprietor s land
title. It allows for the proprietor to be immune from attack by adverse claims and interests in the
land, in which he, the proprietor, is registered. This concept is based around the Torrens system
in New Zealand, this concept consists of three main principles, the mirror, the curtain and the
insurance principles. This essay will discuss the concept of indefeasibility of title, the Torrens
system and how these have provided security of title for land owners in New Zealand. I will also
report on two significant cases that will illustrate the concept of Indefeasibility of title, they are
Frazer v Walker and Efstratiou, Glantschnig and Petrovic v Glatnschnig. Common Law Common
law was implemented in New Zealand when the British settlers arrived. It was in accordance
with English law and was known as the Deeds system and Act and was replaced by the Torrens
system in 1870. Common Law basically stated that no one could confer a better title than the one
they have and therefore if a deed was deemed invalid, so too was the title (Hinde 2013). Torrens
System The Torrens system is what indefeasibility of title has been built around. It has existed
since 1870 and has been refined and is now found in the Land Transfer Act 1952. The system, as
mentioned earlier, consists of three principles, the mirror principle, the curtain principle and the
insurance principle. The Mirror principle:

Analysis Of The Story Kwanzaa And Me
Kwanzaa and Me: Analysis A. Review of the Story The story provided an excellent discussion of
the many issues that surround race in schools, it centered on the topic about whether integrated
schools were more beneficial than segregated schools. This book focuses on young children in
the early grades, listening to parents and racial integration. The author wanted to find the truth
that is surrounding multicultural classrooms from those that are involved in it. This book
includes many side stories, which serve to explore the concepts, and displays them in a clear
way; it also added depth to the book. This book was well written and shows all sides of
multicultural education. It does not take one side in particular and it encourages people to
explore multicultural education in a new light. B. What impact did this story have on you? This
story has affected me in a few ways. One of the ways was how children think and see the world.
One of the ways is how children see and picture racial equality. They do this in a way that many
adults are not readily capable of doing, or choose not to. From the story early on we are told of a
girl named Kesha who distinguishes beyond the socio typical distinctions of black and white,
when she states, Okay, peach with spots for you and brown without spots for me, except his one
and this one on my cheek (Paley, pg. 15). In another part in the story, the author says two children,

The Equal Right Amendment The Equal rights Amendment was proposed to set equality for every
citizen no matter the sex. The amendment has three sections. The first one states equality of rights
under the law should not be denied by the U.S on the account of one s sex. Section two says that
congress has the power to enforce this law. Last but not least, section three says the amendment will
take effect two years after ratification. The ERA is a proposed amendment made to guarantee equal
rights to all U.S. citizens no matter the sex. In 1872 when the issue was introduced to congress it

seven years for ratification when it was submitted in 1972. Many states ratified the amendment
quickly, other states refused the ratification. A big debate in the time of the amendment ratification
was that women were just different then men. Women would never hold the same powers and
fulfill the same things as men. Women began to form many organizations to support the
amendment. Women tried everything in their power to get the law passed. The constitution s 14th
amendment is to protect the right of all citizens, but that does not guarantee the discrimination of
the sex. The equal rights movement would make a better standard for deciding on cases of sex
discrimination. The 14th amendment does not protect anyone from sex discrimination. The ERA
would provide legal defense to women s rights. This amendment would help all humanity, not just
women. Still today, sex discrimination is still an ongoing event. We still need the passing of the
ERA. Although, since then women s rights have improved. Women are still not equal to men. If it

Fat Tax Rebuttal
Fat Tax: Rebuttal The fat tax is a proposed tax on certain unhealthy foods that lead to the
development of certain medical conditions such as obesity. As obesity is a growing concern of
many Americans, arguments can be made about how effective a fat tax may be if implemented. The
opposing group argues that the implementation of a fat tax would discourage the consumption of
unhealthy foods, reduce costs of medical treatment, and obtain government funding. Although our
opposition has some strong points, there are still unanswered questions that need to be addressed.
The opposition claims that a fat tax would deter Americans from eating harmful junk food. They
compare a fat tax to the sin tax on cigarettes, which they claim has lowered cigarette usage in
America. However, much like cigarettes, fatty foods are filled with addictive chemicals that make
people crave more (Engber). Our opposition claims that because the sin tax helped lower the usage
of cigarettes the fat tax will theoretically do the same for unhealthy foods. However, they fail to
mention that the decline of cigarettes is also attributed to strict laws on their usage and the new...

Our opponents are wrong in assuming that the fat tax would reduce obesity. The tax would not help
lower obesity as well as the sin tax lowered the use of cigarettes, since the two carry two different
connotations. Claiming that the tax would lower obesity solely through speculation is illogical.
Additionally, the opposition s statement that a fat tax would deter people from purchasing
unhealthy foods and that the government would use the money collected from the fat tax to fight
obesity contrast each other. These fallacies in our opponent s argument show that the reasons for
the fat tax are full of misconceptions and conflicting viewpoints. That is why opposing the fat tax is

comprised of the Senate, and the sixty member elected House of Representatives. The judicial
branch is defined by the supreme court and several layers of lower courts. The two major parties

Jamaica Labor Party (JLP), which would be the republican party. Then there are many unions that
govern the politicians. They include: trade unions, the Rastafarians, and civic organizations.
During election time, it becomes very hostile and dangerous between the different political parties

Edward Taylor Prologue Poem Analysis
In Edward Taylor s Prologue he seeks to demonstrate the inferiority of man in respect to God s
glory. Taylor begins his piece by creating a metaphor in which his own subsidiarity to God is
described in terms of physical stature and uniqueness. He then purposefully includes phrases
with erroneous meter and imperfect rhymes to demonstrate that his inferiority extends to his
abilities as a writer. Taylor further attempts to establish his lack of authorial skills by including
repetitious words, implying that he lacks an extensive vocabulary. When combined these tactics
serve to support the idea that Edward Taylor has many shortcomings, both as a human and a
poet, especially in comparison to the greatness of God. Taylor begins demonstrating his
meagerness by describing the vast inequity between physical standing of God and man by
employing a metaphor. In this metaphor, Taylor is but a mere Crumb of Dust in comparison to
the glory of God s creation (line 1). This contrast firstly demonstrates Taylor s inadequacy when
examined from a physical perspective; Taylor is but the smallest piece of dust, while God s
glory is, comparatively, almost endless in size and scope. God being larger than Edward Taylor
serves to suggest that God is thus innately superior to Taylor, as greater size implies superiority
over those with smaller builds. Therefore, Taylor is not simply seeking to suggest that God is
physically larger than himself, but instead aiming to use their difference in bodily

Media Bias In The Media
The influence that the media has cannot be doubted by anyone. The media plays a very vital role
in our criminal justice system today. According to the text, Most people gain their knowledge of
events from the media, and therefore the selection and shaping of news by the media is a critical
element in forming and modeling the public opinion on most topics, including criminal justice. The
media decides what is noteworthy, and crime ranks high on that scale. (Banks, 2013) The public s
view of casualties, lawbreakers, deviants, and law enforcement officials is to a great extent dictated
by their depiction in the mass media. Crime in America is big news that is of significant concern
to the American public. In a 1997 national survey conducted by the Roper Center in conjunction
with the Newseum of Arlington, Virginia, 95% of 1,500 respondents said they want to know
about crime, a higher response rate than for any other topic, including local news, the
environment, and world news. (Parade Magazine 1997, 4) The goal of the media is to report the
truth at all times. Reporting the truth to the public is fundamental to the role of the media in
society as well as a moral responsibility of the media (Klaidman and Beauchamp 1987:30).
(Banks, 2013) With reporting news stories, one need to make sure that biasness does not occur. Is
media bias essentially an issue? The impact of media bias depends on how the group of onlookers
forms the data displayed by the media. Media have huge

Carbon Permits Trading
2.1 Relevance and organization of emission trading
Greenhouse gases alike water vapor, carbon dioxide, ozone and methane produced by power
plants, transportation and factories are considered as the main driver for climate change with
devastating impact on nature. Most recent efforts of global players going green by offering carbon
neutral products are quite unlikely able to stop global warming (John Gapper, 2006 and Heide

Figure 7: The emissions trading economics of two participating countries
The way companies profit from emissions trading is described in figure 7; in this example, the
marginal abatement costs (MAC) represents the country specific cost to offset carbon. With
Rreq being the required amount of carbon reduction and R the actual carbon reduction,
Germany has reduced already more carbon than required (R* Rreq), whereas Sweden has not
reached its cap (R* Rreq). Hence, Germany can sell their gains (О” 1 2 3) with a profit in the
market, because their marginal abatement costs are lower than the market price (P). Sweden, on
the contrary, has not yet reached their reduction target and therefore has to reduce emissions
further. Now, Sweden can either reduce emissions internally at their MAC price above the actual
market price, or initiate a so called Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project outside of
Sweden at a lower MAC price. By doing so, they actually realize cost savings which can be
considered as a commercial benefit (Wikipedia).
Critics of ETS are the high complexity and monitoring of the system, very limited enforcement and,
above all, the dispute of initial allocation

Some of the solar companies have generated good amount of revenues last year. Moreover,
Federal, state and local governments offer incredible solar tax credits and rebates to encourage
homeowners to switch to renewable energy to lower their energy usage and switch to solar power.
The amount of the rebate subsidy varies by program, but some are generous enough to cover up
to 30% of your solar power system cost. Therefore, it would be beneficial for Cindy to set up
such solar installation company. The federal government allows you to deduct 30% of your
solar power system costs off your federal taxes through an investment tax credit (ITC). If you do
not expect to owe taxes this year, you can roll over your credit to the following year. Such huge
incentives and benefits from the side of government will satisfy the social soul of Cindy as she
likes to work for the society.
These incentives dramatically lower the cost of a solar power system or energy efficiency project.
These tax credits and rebates often make solar power less expensive than power from the utility

contribution by each sector. The inflation rate and the unemployment rate would also have great

One of the four corporate social responsibilities that Microsoft has to keep in balance with the
others is maximizing profits for shareholders. Microsoft does this by constantly improving their
products, which in turn raises the price of that stock; a rise in stock price is beneficial to
stockholders. Microsoft improves their products often, they typically come out with a new version
of Windows office every couple years, as is the same with Microsoft Windowsoperating system.
Another way Microsoft keeps its shareholders happy is by continually paying out more and more
money through dividends in November of every year. While Microsoft treats their shareholders
very well in terms of dividend payments, their generosity doesn t end there. Microsoft has a
program where they buy back shares from their shareholders. Essentially, they are giving their

money has Microsoft paid out to their shareholders for these outstanding shares? A large $73

shareholders do not suffer a loss if the price of the stock plummets. When Microsoft is decreasing
the number of shares, their shareholders are gaining from this once again; when Microsoft s
income increases, so does the pockets of the shareholders, because they will be getting even more

Moshe s warning signal simply by not taking him seriously, and Wiesel verifies this expression in

believing that that he wanted their pity...was imagining things... and had gone mad . This doubt

Why Schools Are Not to Blame for Cyber Bullying Essay
A young boy was once sitting on his computer when he saw an email from one of his peers. He
opened the email, and soon enough realized he was being bullied. However, the young boy let the
cyber bullying get out of control. His parents told the school about it, but there was nothing they
could do. The boy had to go to a new school where he wouldn t be bullied. There are many
problems like this that get out of hand, so much that the school can do nothing to help. Many
people blame the school for not helping, when there is nothing they can do about it. Therefore,
schools do not have the responsibility to respond to and protect students from the challenge of
cyber bullying, even if it s off campus.

wouldn t say in person. For example, if a student calls someone ugly online, they probably wouldn t
say that in person. However, the school cannot do anything to stop this because they did it at
home. The school systems cannot be held responsible for things that students do at home, and they
should therefore, not be responsible to take action against cyber bullying.
Others would say that schools do have the responsibility to prevent bullying when the schools
helping to prevent bullying empowers students to face up to their bullies. However, this is not the
case.Students would not be empowered to stand up to their bullies if schools took responsibility
for the students. Instead of standing up to the bullies themselves, the students would probably try
to make the school take care of it. This goes to show that having the school take care of bullying
for the students, would not help the students learn how to take care of things on their own. For
example, if the students figured out that the school would take care of something for them, they
would not want to do things themselves. Most students would probably get lazy. Therefore, schools
should not be bound by law to take care of bullying because students would become lazy.
Lastly, schools do not have the responsibility to respond to the cyber bullying of their students is
because sometimes, students do not tell

  • 2. Analysis Of Paley And Aquinas Analysis of Paley and Aquinas Readings in Topic 4 Introduction In the argument, The Argument From Design from Natural Theology, William Paley argues that living things are like watches in one crucial respect: both exhibit design, the universe with everything in it. Paley thinks that people assume that the universe works for a purpose like the watch does. So, people would reasonably conclude that the universe has a designer or creator, like the watch does, God. Although, atheists deny that the universe is designed. But, shouldn t there be some knowledgeable or intelligent creator to guide us towards our purpose to function in life? In the article, The Five Ways, from Summa Theologica, Thomas Aquinas argues whether God exists, which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Summary William Paley found a watch on the ground and assumed that the watch was put together for a purpose. His arguments, then, lead towards the teleological argument, which starts from relatively specific observations to the crucial notion of purpose where there is an intelligent cause to the universe. Paley s whole argument discusses how there must be a maker of the universe since there is a maker of the watch, which must be God. In contrast, a telescope has a designer, so an eye must also have a designer, The end is the same; the means are the same. The purpose in both is alike; the contrivance for accomplishing that purpose is both alike: The lenses of the telescope, and the humours of the eye bear a complete resemblance to one another, in their figure their position; and in their power over the rays of light... How is it possible, under circumstances of such close affinity, and under the operation of equal evidence, to exclude contrivance from one, yet to acknowledge the proof of contrivance having been employed, as the plainest and clearest of all propositions in the other?... (Paley, p.30). If the watch could somehow reproduce, Paley still would not question that the watch still had originated from some intelligent designer. Like the watch, he thinks the universe also works for a purpose. Paley proscribes design as foresight, which is connected with purpose, however, the purpose is not the same as the function. Carter James is really calm, learned everything on his own, and actually thinks on what he is going to say. On like Edward Cole, he s educated, and doesn t care on what he has to say. They both have great minds, but expressed differently. Edward is based of on money which leads to him not caring. I feel like they are both smart, but Carter is more smart because he learned a lot of things on his own and he just loved history. History leads to a lot of knowledge because you get to learn about many thing that happened in the past. He s more of a self reliance man because he relies on himself to get past anything. Edward Cole is more of a guy who was educated, but often shown like he wasn t. Edward has lots of money which often depends on. Due to money, he doesn t really care about others, but himself. Money is the outcome of his education, but that all he has in his life. At the beginning of the movie, could you label Edward cole a bully? Why? I could label Edward Cole as a bully, because he didn t care on what he said to others. He just expressed the way he wanted and didn t care on what others thought of it. He often disrespect and showed this kind of rudeness to others, he made statements like kiss my ass and other rude comments. He would just blur anything out without carrying. Juvenile Corrections Research Paper Of course, we are all familiar with the overcrowding in our prisons, well within the last decade or so we have seen an increase in how many juveniles are now being tried as an adult then ending up in our adult prison system. Statistics show that instead of helping the youth of our nation, the justice system has given up on them and parents are tired of their children sentenced to a life in prison. What happened to the fundamentals of our correction system? Are we not supposed to try and reform them while deterring them from future criminal behavior? Cant Hardly Wait Compared To The Canterbury Tales Canterbury Tales Compare/Contrast Essay Satire as described by the Webster dictionary is a way of using humor to show the weaknesses or bad qualities of a person, government, society, etc. One of the first examples of satirical English writing was Geoffrey Chaucer s The Canterbury Tales. The CanterburyTales revolve around an eclectic group of pilgrims on a religious journey to St. Thomas Beckett s shrine . The true intent of this classic tale was to expose all of 14th century England to the corruptness of the cast system in London. Chaucer executed his purpose by including characters of various statures into his story and discreetly criticizing them by using humor. In doing so he also criticized the morals of aristocracy at that time. Centuries later Chaucer s interpretation of society continues to be used in literature and other forms of art today. The enticement of the world seems so appealing to human, however, C.S. Lewis makes it very clear that the enticement in the world is only temporary, and is ultimately a tactic of the Enemy. Often times, temptation creeps into our minds unexpectedly, but temptation s effects are deadly. In this, it becomes clear to the reader that you do not want to be an average citizen; you do not want this to be your elegy. Some critics argue this, however, as Auden stating that there is nothing disgraceful in being unknown. The poem is, above all, a satire of the way conformity hinders the individual and leaves ridiculous and solely external distinctions between human beings. Auden presents an allegory in The Unknown Citizen that begins even before the poem itself. The phrase Unknown Citizen appears only once in the title. This term is an immediate allusion to and parody of the Unknown Soldier, especially considering the details of who the poem is dedicated to and the fact that it is found on a marble monument, much like those one might expect to see in Washington, D.C. where the United States is home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The Unknown Solider is a soldier who cannot be recognized after being found in battle. This sometimes controversial idea can be interpreted to mean that many people die as unknowns because they lived uninfluential lives. Aside from this large allegory, the poem uses only a few rhetorical devices. • 22. Depression And Dementi Depression Several studies have shown links between depression and dementia. Brommelhoff, Johansson, Fratiglioni, Gatz, McArdle, Pederson state, there are three hypotheses that might explain the association (Jorm, 2001). The first is that depression is a symptom that indicates the onset of dementia, also known as a prodromal feature. The second is that the two are independent illnesses; however, depression causes cognitive deficits, which lead to an earlier onset of dementia. The last argues that depression causes damage in the hippocampus, which then leads to dementia. Some studies have found depression to be a prodrome of dementia. One specifically found that depression arises due to neuropathological damages during the course of dementia, and another showed that people with late onset depression had greater frontal lobe atrophy than controls and those with early onset depression. On the other hand, it has been shown that a history of depression increases the risk of dementia later in life. There is some evidence that the earlier the onset of depression, the greater the likelihood is of developing dementia later; however, this only held true in individuals with little education. The disagreement and contradiction in previous studies call for further experimentation, primarily to determine whether a history of depression significantly predicted the likelihood of having dementia later in life (Brommelhoff et al., 2009). • 27. The Lincoln Electric Company Essay The Lincoln Electric Company was founded in 1895 by John C. Lincoln, who then partnered with his younger brother James in 1907. The focus of the company originally was manufacturing electric motors, which then expanded to include battery chargers and in the early 1900 s to portable welding machines. (Lincoln Electric, 2016) The company was founded originally on a construct of Christian values, which may have played a role in creating the dominant culture of the corporation. (Sharplin) This paper presents an evaluative analysis of the business case study presented by Arthur Sharplin, with a focus on determining the overall corporate culture of Lincoln Electric categorically. John and James Lincoln professed to be devout Christians and embodied their faith in their treatment of their employees early on in the company. While a clear hierarchy and protection of management control was evident in their organizational structure, they ensured that employees had regular access to the management team both formally and informally. Management roles may have been protected and controlled but they were seen strictly as tasks to perform just as every other employee was assigned their tasks. In this respect the workplace was and remains designed strictly around function, no perks exist for management that do not exist for every employee. (Sharplin) This example points to the importance of a people oriented culture in the workplace and is almost egalitarian in nature. (Flat World Knowledge, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. An Idea That Protects A Proprietor s Land Title Indefeasibility Introduction Indefeasibility of title is an idea that protects a proprietor s land title. It allows for the proprietor to be immune from attack by adverse claims and interests in the land, in which he, the proprietor, is registered. This concept is based around the Torrens system in New Zealand, this concept consists of three main principles, the mirror, the curtain and the insurance principles. This essay will discuss the concept of indefeasibility of title, the Torrens system and how these have provided security of title for land owners in New Zealand. I will also report on two significant cases that will illustrate the concept of Indefeasibility of title, they are Frazer v Walker and Efstratiou, Glantschnig and Petrovic v Glatnschnig. Common Law Common law was implemented in New Zealand when the British settlers arrived. It was in accordance with English law and was known as the Deeds system and Act and was replaced by the Torrens system in 1870. Common Law basically stated that no one could confer a better title than the one they have and therefore if a deed was deemed invalid, so too was the title (Hinde 2013). Torrens System The Torrens system is what indefeasibility of title has been built around. It has existed since 1870 and has been refined and is now found in the Land Transfer Act 1952. The system, as mentioned earlier, consists of three principles, the mirror principle, the curtain principle and the insurance principle. The Mirror principle: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Review of the Story The story provided an excellent discussion of the many issues that surround race in schools, it centered on the topic about whether integrated schools were more beneficial than segregated schools. This book focuses on young children in the early grades, listening to parents and racial integration. The author wanted to find the truth that is surrounding multicultural classrooms from those that are involved in it. This book includes many side stories, which serve to explore the concepts, and displays them in a clear way; it also added depth to the book. This book was well written and shows all sides of multicultural education. It does not take one side in particular and it encourages people to explore multicultural education in a new light. B. What impact did this story have on you? This story has affected me in a few ways. One of the ways was how children think and see the world. One of the ways is how children see and picture racial equality. They do this in a way that many adults are not readily capable of doing, or choose not to. From the story early on we are told of a girl named Kesha who distinguishes beyond the socio typical distinctions of black and white, when she states, Okay, peach with spots for you and brown without spots for me, except his one and this one on my cheek (Paley, pg. 15). As obesity is a growing concern of many Americans, arguments can be made about how effective a fat tax may be if implemented. The opposing group argues that the implementation of a fat tax would discourage the consumption of unhealthy foods, reduce costs of medical treatment, and obtain government funding. Although our opposition has some strong points, there are still unanswered questions that need to be addressed. The opposition claims that a fat tax would deter Americans from eating harmful junk food. They compare a fat tax to the sin tax on cigarettes, which they claim has lowered cigarette usage in America. However, much like cigarettes, fatty foods are filled with addictive chemicals that make people crave more (Engber). Our opposition claims that because the sin tax helped lower the usage of cigarettes the fat tax will theoretically do the same for unhealthy foods. • 33. Edward Taylor Prologue Poem Analysis In Edward Taylor s Prologue he seeks to demonstrate the inferiority of man in respect to God s glory. Taylor begins his piece by creating a metaphor in which his own subsidiarity to God is described in terms of physical stature and uniqueness. He then purposefully includes phrases with erroneous meter and imperfect rhymes to demonstrate that his inferiority extends to his abilities as a writer. Taylor further attempts to establish his lack of authorial skills by including repetitious words, implying that he lacks an extensive vocabulary. When combined these tactics serve to support the idea that Edward Taylor has many shortcomings, both as a human and a poet, especially in comparison to the greatness of God. Taylor begins demonstrating his meagerness by describing the vast inequity between physical standing of God and man by employing a metaphor. In this metaphor, Taylor is but a mere Crumb of Dust in comparison to the glory of God s creation (line 1). This contrast firstly demonstrates Taylor s inadequacy when examined from a physical perspective; Taylor is but the smallest piece of dust, while God s glory is, comparatively, almost endless in size and scope. God being larger than Edward Taylor serves to suggest that God is thus innately superior to Taylor, as greater size implies superiority over those with smaller builds. Therefore, Taylor is not simply seeking to suggest that God is physically larger than himself, but instead aiming to use their difference in bodily ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Media Bias In The Media The influence that the media has cannot be doubted by anyone. The media plays a very vital role in our criminal justice system today. According to the text, Most people gain their knowledge of events from the media, and therefore the selection and shaping of news by the media is a critical element in forming and modeling the public opinion on most topics, including criminal justice. The media decides what is noteworthy, and crime ranks high on that scale. (Banks, 2013) The public s view of casualties, lawbreakers, deviants, and law enforcement officials is to a great extent dictated by their depiction in the mass media. Crime in America is big news that is of significant concern to the American public. In a 1997 national survey conducted by the Roper Center in conjunction with the Newseum of Arlington, Virginia, 95% of 1,500 respondents said they want to know about crime, a higher response rate than for any other topic, including local news, the environment, and world news. (Parade Magazine 1997, 4) The goal of the media is to report the truth at all times. Reporting the truth to the public is fundamental to the role of the media in society as well as a moral responsibility of the media (Klaidman and Beauchamp 1987:30). (Banks, 2013) With reporting news stories, one need to make sure that biasness does not occur. Is media bias essentially an issue? Figure 7: The emissions trading economics of two participating countries The way companies profit from emissions trading is described in figure 7; in this example, the marginal abatement costs (MAC) represents the country specific cost to offset carbon. With Rreq being the required amount of carbon reduction and R the actual carbon reduction, Germany has reduced already more carbon than required (R* Rreq), whereas Sweden has not reached its cap (R* Rreq). Hence, Germany can sell their gains (О” 1 2 3) with a profit in the market, because their marginal abatement costs are lower than the market price (P). Sweden, on the contrary, has not yet reached their reduction target and therefore has to reduce emissions further. Now, Sweden can either reduce emissions internally at their MAC price above the actual market price, or initiate a so called Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project outside of Sweden at a lower MAC price. By doing so, they actually realize cost savings which can be considered as a commercial benefit (Wikipedia).
