In the 1900 s these principles were known nationally and were applied in many

The Colossus and Daddy by Sylvia Plath
Sylvia Plath is one of the greatest poets of all time the queen of confessional poetry.
Her writing is thick with figurative language that cannot be interpreted only one
way. Sylvia Plath herself was complicated, and she struggled with her own personal
hardships up until the day she took her own life. Plath s father passed when she was
only eight, and she struggled with his absence not only though the rest of her
childhood but also into adult hood. Many critics believe her famous poems, such as
The Colossus and Daddy, were confessional poems Sylvia wrote about her father.
Although there are many ties within her poetry to her real father, her writing cannot
only be interpreted this way. Sylvia had many demons she likely tried to tackle or
even understand through her writing her pain channeling through the speaker. The
Colossus, a poem widely believed to stem from her own experiences with death and
depression, is a beautiful poem rich with imagery that exposes the pain of living
forever in the shadows. The literal definition of colossus means large statue. A
colossus can be a statue that represents a deceased person. The Colossus of Rhodes,
one of the seven ancient wonders of the world, was so grand in size it was

Personal Reflection Essay
I will never forget the fall morning of my senior year of college when I was driving
to school one day. I stared at the road as tears streamed down my face. I was
questioning my whole existence, my purpose in life, and trying to comprehend
why I felt so empty. There wasn t a light at the end of the tunnel, I remember
praying I would find it, but in the back of my mind I had no hope left. I arrived at
Gustavus, wiped away my tears, and put on that mask we all put on at some point

In recent decades, academics, policymakers and non governmental organizations have
placed greater focus on establishing more comprehensive metrics of well being and
development ##. Measures of national welfare have conventionally centered on a
fairly narrow band of economic considerations, such as gross domestic product (GDP)
and employment rate. Poverty and wellbeing are now widely understood as
multifaceted concepts which cannot be adequately described through measurements
of income alone. Economists and development experts are faced with the challenge of
constructing metrics to distill the various components of wellbeing into an easily
comparable index. The following summarizes the most salient contemporary methods
of index construction and provide a brief overview of their strengths and weaknesses.
Transformation Functions: In order to build a multi dimensional index it is first
necessary to convert the various components deemed relevant into a comparable,
aggregatable set of units. That is, to find a way to bring variables like average
income (which may be expect to fall in the range of tens of thousands of dollars) and
life expectancy (which would rarely exceed 90 years) into the same scale of
