The Effects Of Religion On Athletic Performance
Introduction
Many athletes are superstitious, or go through the same series of progressions or habits before
competition, because they believe it gives them luck or a better chance to perform optimally. Some of
these habits, may include praying. The act of praying is a way for an athlete to think they can attain an
edge, so they can compete better. During my time as an intern with Fordham Athletics, I was given
many opportunities to spend time with athletes from a variety of sports. My interactions with these
athletes, as well as my own experience as a college athlete who prayed before competitions, triggered
my interest in the relationship between prayer, and athletic performance. Does prayer before
competition affect the overall performance of an athlete? In this paper I will examine the effects of
religion and prayer on an athlete going into competition, as well as how it affects an athlete s overall
performance.
Literature Review
There has been scarce documentation covering the effects of religion on athletic performance. Up until
two decades ago, articles and research consisted largely of people saying an athletes religious beliefs
had no effect on their overall performance. We have all heard questions asking if it s necessary for a
player to thank God after hitting a homerun, or taking a knee before the game and praying. These
articles were mostly based on the opinion of the author, and not backed by empirical data. More recent
research on this topic, includes a

Bullying Is An Emotional And Physical Draining Issue
Bullying is an emotional and physical draining issue that is prominent throughout the world today.
School bullying has been identified as a major problem in many countries and almost anyone you
come across has a story they can tell about it. Bullying can create a hard lifestyle for someone who is
victimized, and can threaten a person s opportunities in life in the near future. The social climate of a
school is a replica of the world outside. All fifty states have passed school anti bullying legislation, but
each state addresses bullying differently. It is equally important that where people develop a large
portion of their mortality, their understanding how the world works and how their sense of
responsibility goes towards the society they live in.
The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on
and do nothing. That quote stated by Albert Einstein is similar to the bullying cycle that was created
by an American nurse. There are five steps in the bullying cycle and each plays their own specific role.
The first in the bullying cycle is the bully. The bully is the main aggressor and is typically influenced
in looking for power or control over another human being. Also, the bully is either looking for
attention or possess a strong self esteem towards themselves or others. Next in the bullying cycle is
the passive defenders. Passive defenders are defenders who dislike the bully or the actions taking
place but will do nothing

Essay on The Enduring Loyalty, Love, and Compassion of...
Imagine leaving your wealth, home, family, and even country behind for twenty years. While away,
people will inevitably attempt to steal your possessions, seduce your spouse, and act as though you
will never return. Most likely, more people will try to harm your estate than those who will continue
working and behaving in an honest manner. This notion holds true in Homer s epic poem, The
Odyssey. While Odysseus wages war and struggles to return to Ithaka , a multitude of suitors court his
wife and live at the cost of his possessions. On the other hand, a few people like Eumaios remain
steadfast to the truth and work to maintain Odysseus estate and possessions. Eumaios, Odysseus
swineherd, embodies compassion, love, and loyalty. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Eumaios feels the pain and hardship that LaĆ«rtĆŖs endures, as he feels that the distressed LaĆ«rtĆŖs needs
instantaneous notice of his grandson s return.
In addition to being empathetic throughout the poem, Eumaios loves those who need it most:
Odysseus, TelƩmakhos, and the swine entrusted to him. When everyone else had finished dinner and
went to bed for the evening, Eumaios took a sharpened lance, and went to rest / under a hollow rock
where swine were sleeping (14.629 30). Homer uses this as an opportunity to show that Eumaios truly
treasured his swine; instead of sleeping like the others, he ventures out into the cold to watch over the
vulnerable swine. Later, when TelƩmakhos returns from searching for Odysseus, it is remarked that
Eumaios kissed the young man s head, his shining eyes / and both hands, while his own tears brimmed
and fell (16.21 2). In Odysseus absence, Eumaios essentially assumes the paternal role in TelƩmakhos
life, and Eumaios was ecstatic to see that his son had returned safely to Ithaka and avoided the
murderous suitors. Another emotional scene takes place when Odysseus reveals himself to the faithful
swineherd and cowherd. When Eumaios hears the news, he puts his arms around the old soldier,
weeping, / kissing his head and shoulders (21.251 2). Eumaios beams with excitement and joy when
he finds out his long last master has finally returned;

Essay on The Secrets to Be Innovative
Innovation is the process of changing something to make it better. To innovate a product is to
modernise it so as to suit the people living in the current generation. Lots of ideas need to be generated
in order to innovate. Innovation has no age restrictions. As long as you still have a pair of hand and
feet with a good working brain, innovation can take place anywhere and at any time.
IDEO was founded by David Kelley in Palo Alto, California, in 1991. He and his team works
tirelessly everyday innovating and creating new ideas. IDEO designs about 90 new products every
year. Apart from creating new products, IDEO can take any existing random product from the market
and redesign it to make it better.

There are many factors which contributed to the success and innovative design of the shopping trolley.
Sticking firm to their mottos only have one conversation at a time, stay focus throughout the project,
encourage wild ideas, and fail often in order to succeed sooner allows them to create new products and
generate wild ideas easily in a short span of time. One important thing which they never do is to
criticise on one another s idea. They believe that any idea is important as it would help them to take
off from scratch.
Although the people in IDEO are not chefs, they do have their own special recipe recipe for
innovation. They work for long hours every day making full use of every single second of every single
minute, of every single hour. Maximising their time is the key to being able to do more than the rest
who don t. The people in IDEO are all open minded. From the bosses to the eclectics, every single one
of them are impartial towards new ideas. Being able to accept new ideas would make a person much
wiser and knowledgeable and hence lead to greater productivity. Working with a boss who demands
for fresh ideas would constantly train the staffs to be able to come up with ideas quickly. For example,
if a lecturer constantly makes the students practise using a certain formula (eg. e=mc2) repeatedly,
they probably would have mastered on the application

What Is The Theme Of Cinderella
people just think of books as a form of entertainment, but humans can actually learn from them. For
example: Grimm s version of Cinderella, published in 1812, was a favorite tale among children in
Germany. Disney s reproduction of Cinderella, published in 1950, was a popular movie among kids in
America. Italy s translation of Cinderella, published in 1885, was favored story among families in
Italy. In each version of Cinderella, Grimm, Disney, and Italy one greater theme stands out among all
others.
In the Grimm story of Cinderella , there is one vital theme: hate and contempt will get you nowhere in
life, when it is simple to be kind. Furthermore, here is some background information before the
support to this theme. The king announced a festival for his prince to meet a bride, Cinderella s step
mom says to her that she is not coming, she goes to the tree at her mother s grave and asks the dove
there for the same beautiful dress every night, she meets the prince at the ball, loses her slipper, prince
uses the slipper to find Cinderella, and she tries it on and gets engaged to the prince. In addition to the
background information, the support to the theme is when at Cinderella s wedding, her step sisters get
their eyes pecked out, of because of how mean they are to Cinderella(7). Now, this story was written
in Germany in 1812. Correspondingly, the theme was important to kids during that time in Germany
because they didn t have any type of entertainment during

Tracking Is An Assault On Liberty By Nicholas Carr
In the essay, Tracking Is an Assault on Liberty by Nicholas Carr, he argues the importance of privacy
when one is surfing the web. Carr writes how companies personalize ads they provide on the internet
based on our personal information. We are not aware of the consequences and the information we
disclose about ourselves on the internet. Everything we do on the internet is recorded and stored.
Nicholas Carr uses ethos and counter argument/refutation to express to his audience that their privacy
is being violated. Carr utilizes ethical appeals to identify to his readers that he/she has a right to their
own privacy and how companies and organizations are violating it. He strengthens his ethical appeal
and argument by collecting ample evidence from professionals in the field. Carr writes, ...the
computer consultant Tom Owad... wrote a simple piece of software that allowed him to download
public wish lists that Amazon.com customers post to catalog products that they plan to purchase...Mr.
Owad ended up with maps of the United States showing the locations of people interested in particular
books and ideas... (Carr 437). Carr uses an expert to enhance his argument and provide a credible
source. The greater a person s authority, the more likely an audience is inclined to listen and be
persuaded. By putting an expert s research on his essay, Carr s audience will be convinced which will
lead them to trust him more. Another example where Carr uses an expert s opinion is when he notes,
As the computer security expert Bruce Schneier has observed, privacy is not just a screen we hide
behind when we do something naughty or embarrassing; privacy is intrinsic to the concept of liberty.
When we feel that we re always being watched, we begin to lose our sense of self reliance and free
will and, along with it, our individuality (Carr 439). Carr uses Scheiner s, a computer security expert,
to tell his readers how one feels when they feel like they lost their privacy. Car uses reasoned
argument by stating series of statements that use evidence and reasoning to support his claim.
Carr also uses counterargument/refutations to influence the readers that our personal datas may fall in
the wrong hands. He writes, You have

Shawshank Redemption Corrections
The 1994 film, The Shawshank Redemption, directed by Frank Darabont, presents a complex and
brutal prison environment for both its guards and inmates. Andy Dufresne, an inmate who is wrongly
convicted of murder, is faced with several facets of the grim and isolated nature of Shawshank
penitentiary. Throughout the film, several correctional concepts are illustrated that present inimitable
challenges for both Dufresne as well as other inmates in the prison. The major correctional concepts
that shaped the inmates prison experiences include: prison economy, prisonization and
institutionalization, adaptive roles, and prison violence. Together, these concepts provide the
multifaceted foundation of the prison environment in the film as well as depict current correctional
concepts that are present in America s prisons. The prison economy plays an important role for ...

An adaptive role is described as how inmates become accustomed to prison (283). The four
fundamental roles that an inmate can embrace include: doing time, gleaning, jailing, or becoming a
disorganized criminal. (283) Upon arriving to Shawshank, Tommy Williams learns that Dufresne had
been helping other inmates to pass their General Educational Development tests. He convinces
Dufresne that he is committed to studying for the tests and ultimately passes with a C+ average.
Williams took advantage of the educational resources that were available to him in hopes of bettering
his situation once he was released. By doing so, he had been gleaning. (283) In addition to adaptive
roles, the film also portrays many instances and forms of prison violence. Prisons provide all of the
necessary conditions to host violence (288). The film depicts instances of prisoner prisoner violence in

A Midsummer s Night Dream Essay
Everyone at one point or another judges someone else and makes the wrong assumption. People have
that habit, but sometimes people can fool others. After all, people dress and act how they want to look
to others. In the Elizabethan era romantic comedy A Midsummer s Night Dream, William Shakespeare
suggests the theme that people have hidden layers and disguises which can lead others to foolish
choices. People can fool other people, occasionally with the intent of mischief or a common mistake.
When Puck, a usually mischievous fairy, wants to fulfill his lord Oberon s wishes without deviation,
the action reveals another side of the fairy. However with all the good intent, Puck still mistakes
Lysander for Demetrius. As Oberon speaks the mistake ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Bottom has the characteristics necessary of an actor which includes the ability to alter the audience s
perception. When Bottom first shows his bravado, his only concern becomes the idea of portraying his
abilities as an excellent actor, when he cries That will ask come tears in the true performing of it: if I
do it, let the audience look to their eyes; I will move storms, I will condole in some measure... This is
Ercle s vein, a tyrant s vein, a lover is more condoling (I. ii. 23 26. 38 40). However Bottom shows
another side to himself to only the few in which he chooses. When Shakespeare shows the audience
this side of Bottom, he also uncovers that people who have the ability to change other s perception of
them have power over others to influence them and fool them. The silly and childish actor becomes
more solemn and serious in contrast when he relies to Quince s question in regard to his
disappearance, in return replies, Masters, I am to discourse wonders. But ask me not what; for, if I tell
you, I am no true Athenian. I will tell you everything right as it fell out (IV. ii. 29 31). Bottom refrains
from recounting the story, because he knows that the play takes precedence over a silly

My Love Short Story
I always thought that I did not need anyone but myself. A black and white world with only myself in
it. I never really cared for anyone; if I did they would be a family or a close friend. Anything romantic
was always thrown out of the window. I did not want to think about love or even pay attention to it.
That all changed when I fell in love. It changed my whole world and how I viewed it. It is not just
liking someone and being in a relationship; love is so much more than that. Love is a wonderful
feeling. Love took me to places I have never been before; it taught me a lot about myself; it is a wild
roller coaster ride.
It all started when I first met him. At the time, I did not think more than our growing friendship. We
had countless conversations about ourselves, other people, and just about anything. I learned our about
similarities and differences. I would often laugh at how predictable he is sometimes. Our differences
on the other hand did not hinder our relationship. I found it interesting how he could talk and it would
captivate me. The way he would tell stories or write a poem is like a gift. His voice is deep and
melodious, which made him sound like he was singing instead of speaking. He is smarter than anyone
I have ever met; a genius is a better word. Despite being smart, he was like a child. He often acts like a
mischievous little rascal. I became attached to him. He became a drug that I got addicted to. His gentle
face made my heart flutter every time I saw

Greek Architecture Essay
Characteristics of Greek Architecture:
INTRODUCTION:
Instead of covering nearly every bit of space with ornament, as the Egyptians did, the Greeks selected
only the best places for it, and thus gave it its proper effect. The decorations, especially the sculptures,
were one of the chief features of a Greek temple. Besides their temples the Greeks built many theaters
which may be studied from their ruins, but of their dwelling houses almost nothing remains to us.
The Greek style is noted for the repose, harmony, and proportion of its effect. These are terms we
might use in speaking of a painting, but they relate to the composition of a building which is, in many
respects, similar to the composition of a picture. In selecting his ... Show more content on

The most important of the Ionic temples left to us is the Erechtheum at Athens. It differs from other
temples in its irregularity. This makes it doubly interesting for it shows that although the Greeks
nearly always adhered to one simple form, they could dispense with it when they wished. In the
Erechtheum, they wished to provide for several shrines in one building, and under one roof. The
irregularity they have made so beautiful and interesting that it is a wonder they did not repeat the idea
many times in other structures. Its two colonnades of different designs, its remarkable north doorway,
and the famous caryatid porch to the south are unsurpassed. Another temple, that of Artemis (Diana) at
Ephesus, was known as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
THE GREEK CORINTHIAN ORDER:
This is the most ornate of the classical orders, and the most slender in its proportions. The capital is
shaped somewhat like a bell inverted, and is adorned with rows of acanthus leaves. A great example of
the, third, or Corinthian order is the monument of Lysicrates at Athens.
Straight is the line of duty.
Curved is the line of beauty

Two Theoretical Models That Underpin Health Promotion
The aim of the assignment is to outline at least 2 Theoretical Models that underpin health promotion.
The theories chosen in this evaluation are the Health Belief Model and the Social Cognitive Theory.
In order to outline theories which underpin health promotion it is important to first understand what
health promotion is. Heath promotion is the process of enabling control over health and its detriments,
improving health in the long run. It promotes awareness about the issue at hand and provides support
and means of improving health in the long run.
The World Health Organisation (WHO, 2005) describes health promotions as;
The process of enabling people to increase control over, and to improve, their health. It moves beyond

It specifies the constructs individually, however it doesn t take into consideration the likelihood of
actions. For example, if the perceived seriousness is high and susceptibility is low, it is assumed that
the probability of action will still be high; whereas realistically the likelihood would be lower than
when both of the variables are high. It is assumed that the variables are not moderated by each other. It
also assumes that the variables directly affect health behaviour and we remain resilient by our
behavioural intentions.
The second weakness is that important factors of health behaviour, such as the positive effects of
negative behaviours and social influence are not included in the model, neither are affecting social and
economic factors. In addition to this criticism some behaviours, such as smoking for example; are
based on a force of habit rather than a

Definitions Of Leadership And Management
Definitions of leadership and management.
Although the interviews conducted were unstructured all three practitioners were asked for their
definition of leadership and management. It was thought that questions about leadership and
management could be interpreted in so many ways, whereas having their interpretation helped to
better understand where they were coming from. It was important to understand each individual
perception.
In the interviews conducted management was believed to generate responsibilities such as planning,
paperwork, day to day running and that health and safety is in place. Where as leadership was believed
to be more involved with what the children do, helping others perform their role, inspiring others. A
conversation with practitioner two, that was recorded in the field notes revealed staff not wanting to be
thought of as a manager, preconceived ideas of management made the role something they did not
want to aspire to. Authoritative was a word used. Practitioners stressed on their dislike for the term

As early years practitioners, the most important aspect of the job is working with the children.

which most enjoy and a reason for their career choice in the first place. If practitioners link managerial

The Soldier By Rupert Brooke Analysis
Compare and contrast the language features used by Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke to express their
perception of war.
World War 1 was known at the time as the, the war to end all wars. The war fought between July 28,
1914, and November 11, 1918, during this period of time the perception of war and the casualties of
war changed immensely. This changed of perception can be established through the poets of Wilfred
Owen and Rupert Brooke. In the poems, The Soldier (1914), by Rupert Brooke, and Dulce et
Decorum Est (October 1917), by Wilfred Owen, both poets use language techniques to assist the
readers to comprehend each text. The Soldier is a portrayal of Rupert Brooke s eternal love for his
country as he goes to war. Rupert uses personification to structure his poem in the outline of a sonnet
to portray the soldier s extreme nationalism for England. While Wilfred describes the ugly reality of
war in his poem, Dulce et Decorum Est. Through the efficient use of metaphors and a rhyme scheme,
Owen s poem leaves a lasting image on the mind s of the audience.
Among the poems Dulce et Decorum Est and The Soldier, there are a numeral similarity. The use of
Titling, is created to mislead the reader, in the sense that the terms are used to contradict the content of
the poem. The Soldier evokes melancholy, but in reality the poem reveals that fighting in war is for the
lone purpose of defending one s country, and showcasing your nationalism. Hence encouraging the act
think this heart, all evil shed away , to then state his true extreme nationalism through the passage no
less gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given . While contrastingly the Dulce et Decorum
Est, reflects jingoism. But the poem itself exposes the cold truth about war through the tone of
resentment, thus disheartening glory. When considering the structure of each poem, they are very
similar in the way that they are both written as an iambic pentameter. Within addition they both share
a notable structure rhyme pattern. With Dulce et Decorum Est, portraying a rhyme that is broken at

Purpose Of The Disability Voting Rights
Purpose of the Disability Voting Rights Paper
This paper argues the disabled communities do not enjoy full voting rights to participate in the
political system. There are several political factors that explain why the concerns of the disabled
communities have largely been ignored or not adequately addressed. The Committee of Seventy is an
organization with strong political influence over the elections held every year in the City of
Philadelphia, PA. The organizational enjoys a great reputation among local politicians, CEOs, and
other socially affluent residents of the city. It is important to acknowledge the disabled communities

Need for Strategic Change
The Committee of Seventy has successfully implemented a civic reform strategy in the City of
Philadelphia. The residents of Philadelphia desire equal voting rights. The gerrymander system
controls districts throughout the city. Both Republican and Democratic parties have acknowledged
gerrymandering strategies help them protect districts (Persily, 2007).
The gerrymander system is a primary strategic tool. The strategic planning can help address the
problems created by the gerrymander system that limit voting rights and result in controlled elections
(Byrson, 2010). The disabled communities are often invisible under the gerrymander system because
both political parties focus on race and age, and this is true in the City of Philadelphia as well. The
voter turnout tends to be low among the members of the disabled communities assuming other factors
including the demographics are constant (Schur et al., 2002). The Voting Rights Act Re authorization
in 2006 didn t help much as the voter turnout, whether measured by state or racial group, still declined
(Persily, 2007). The electronic Absentee Ballot forms also discourage political engagement by the
disabled communities. The use of strategic tools by both parties further limits the political
participation by the disabled communities. The research literature has identified several reasons why
people with disabilities may have trouble driving to the

Monarch Butterflies Population Decline
The population numbers of the beloved Monarch Butterfly are rapidly decreasing, and scientists are
working hard this September to save the species. Monarch butterflies depend solely on the milkweed
plant to survive. Milkweed, however, has been disappearing like crazy due especially to increased use
of the weed killer Roundup over the past ten to twenty years. That, combined with more general trends
of habitat loss, various effects of climate change, and challenges like the drought in California, has
spelled out around a ninety percent population decline for monarchs in the past twenty years.
Scientists currently estimate a global population of around 33 million monarch butterflies, down from

The Prostitute In Dostoevsky s Crime and Punishment,...
The Prostitute In Dostoevsky s Crime and Punishment, Notes from Underground, and The Meek One
The prostitute is a curious fixture of Victorian era literature. In the works of William Thackeray and
Samuel Richardson it was almost clichƩ for the heroine to end up in a house of prostitution and then to
transcend that situation in a show of proper Victorian morals. Having seen many young women forced
by extreme poverty to take up the trade of a loose woman, Fyodor Dostoevsky, a petit bourgeois fallen
on hard times himself, took a rather different approach to the whole issue; he recognized that these
women were not utterly without merit as so many people of the time thought. Georg Brandes spoke
accurately when he said, Dostoevsky preaches ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Yet this connection would be for naught if not for the virtue of Sonia. When he confesses his heinous
crime to her, she weeps in sorrow for him and begs him to save himself by confessing. Dostoevsky s
point here is that by setting himself anathema from society and God, Raskolnikov is destroying his
own spirit. He is not allowing himself to function as he was made to function, and a house divided
against itself cannot stand. Just so, Raskolnikov cannot survive as a man in a world turned about and
disrupted beyond recognition by his act of violence and societal dissent. Providence is strikingly
illustrated here: Raskolnikov cannot survive without Sonia s aid, but neither could Sonia have been
redeemed if Raskolnikov had not come along in need of redemption himself; she would have
continued on the road to perdition from which her charitable impulses tore her.
What is Dostoevsky illustrating here? He is showing us the cruelty of inner struggle and the fact that
this struggle can only be won through the power of grace and redemption. Sonia struggles with the
fact that she is indeed a house divided. On one hand she is the epitome of wisdom and holiness, and
on the other she is the base tool of men s lust. This flagrant contradiction cannot stand; Sonia must
choose one path or the other. Raskolnikov also demonstrates this inherent contradiction: he is both
pure good and pure evil. This mƩlange of sin and sadism, of purity and

rundown of some of Australia s up and coming neighbourhoods that you should be keeping an eye on
if you re looking to buy a home in the near future.

You can expect a drier climate with cold winters, but do not let this deter you. Suburbs in Ainslie are
perfect for families looking to settle down. Alternatively, Braddon and Civic are great suburbs for
single residents.
Melbourne
Housing a population of around four million, Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia. This
city also features some of Australia s best nightlife and has a deep love for sports and the arts. It is,
arguably, one of the best places to live in the world when it comes to culture. As far as suburbs go,
families should look at Camberwell. However, for a little more culture then consider Fitzroy.
Perth
Known for a consistently warm climate and equally warm population, Perth has a lot to offer
considering how isolated it is from the rest of Australia. Look north or west for the affluent suburbs in
Perth, such as Nedlands and Mosman Park.
Sydney
Sydney is arguably Australia s most popular destination, with scenic landmarks and gorgeous beaches
scattered across a bustling metropolis. Being Australia s biggest city means a lot of options in
neighbourhoods. For the younger crowd, Inner West is a great area with a vibrant crowd. For the
family type, you will struggle to find a better suburb than the Northern

Northwest Ordinance Essay
Do you know what the northwest territory ordinance is? The northwest ordinance, was a plan that
would allow the U.S to expand its boundaries out to the Pacific, it was adopted on july 13 1787. That
plan was made by the second Continental Congress. Before the northwest ordinance plan was in
motation there was another plan also made my the Continental Congress Resolution on Public Lands.
The northwest territory ordinance was the first ordinance made. It was made to get all the states north
of the ohio river and west of Pennsylvania to become part of the union. The northwest ordinance not
only added more states but it also provided a stronger government. There was a bill of rights that came

It also influenced how the United States is set up today. The ordinance guaranteed that the new states
would get treated the same as the original 13 states.
The northwest ordinance didn t just makes the 5 states part of the union but it also became the slave
free states. So slave that got released or free could go to any of those 5 states and live a normal life.
Some people would take the slaves papers and rip them up and send them back to the slave states to
make money. So that made it hard for the slaves to live a new normal life.
The troubles they had with this treaty was how divide the land into states. Because the population had
to reach 60,000 to become a statehood. But once that happened they divided the land north of the ohio
river into 5 states. The bill of rights played a important role in the northwest ordinance. It provided a
method for admitting new states to the Union from the territory, and listed a bill of rights guaranteed
in the territory. It also provides rights for the people living in one of the 5 states.
The Second Continental Congress was a convention of delegates from the Thirteen Colonies. It started
meeting in the spring of 1775. The Second Continental Congress was also what issued the

Sexual Education. Sexual Education Has Always Been An...
Sexual Education Sexual education has always been an extremely heated topic among parents,
teachers, lawmakers, and everyone in between. It has led to several court cases, new rules and laws,
and different and very creative ways of teaching sexual intercourse and the potential repercussions to
preteens and teens. Most students probably started talking about sex on the playground or while they
were hanging out with friends well before they should have been speaking about it. In today s society,
sex is easily attainable through the internet. Mass media is the number one contributor to literally

In Europe, educators contemplated bringing sex education to the classrooms as early as the late 19th
century. In America, schools first began to implement sex education in the mid 1920s. In a book that
talks about the social, political, and local goals of schooling, the author states, Originally sex
education was promoted in 1926 by the National Education Association s committee on Character
Education as a means of combatting the decline of the family and regulating sexual impulses for the
good of society (Moral Values and Sex Education). In other words, schools wanted to teach students
how to control their sex drive, but almost increase in making families. In my opinion, I don t think that
makes much sense. Sex education is just as controversial in other countries as it is in the United
States. Fascists in Italy and Germany thought Marxists were the ones that thought of this type of
education. Several parents told their children they came from Santa Clause, the gooseberry tree, and
even fished out of the river. Although a lot of open minded, progressive countries thought sex was too
contentious of a subject to be taught in schools, many of the citizens did not want to be the ones that
had to teach their children about the birds and the bees. Joseph Zimmerman who wrote about the
global history of sex education stated, It was left to the schools and teachers to help dispel any cultural
myths surrounding sex (Zimmerman). In America, when teachers

The Sonnets Of The Sonnet In The 17th Century
Prior to the 17th century, poetry was not only predominantly written by males, but also catered to their
ideas, interests, and views. During this time, women were limited in their expression and were
silenced to anything other than their household duties. Among this era, Elizabeth Barrett was born in
1806 to a family of great wealth in Durham, England. Under a very traditional, strict household, she
was the eldest of 12 children. Her father, Edward, was very controlling and forbid all of his daughters
from marrying. Although, he did encourage highly encourage their studies. Elizabeth began to explore
beyond her traditional studies and took an interest in poetry, literature, and various languages. At a
very young age, she could read the works of many well known scholars. Unfortunately, Elizabeth
became very ill, which in turn affected not only her well being but over overall mindset. Although her
circumstances grew worse, she was able to spend more time on her studies. Elizabeth later became a
very influential poet, writing the Sonnets of the Portuguese, challenging the traditional male
dominance in writing through her new view, writing style, and the concept of love.
With Elizabeth s gloomy outlook on life, and the overbearing traditional sense of love from her father,
she was certain that she would never find true love or even marry. However, the more she began to
write the more attention she received, particularly from one individual writer, Robert Browning. Later

Editing and the Crisis of Open Source Essay
Editing and the Crisis of Open Source
The Free Software movement that began in 1985 and the newer open source movement, represented a
serious threat to traditional methods of production and distribution. The idea of a non proprietary
method of cultural exchange was and is a radical departure from traditional models that have come to
restrict creativity and free exchange. In the ensuing years, there was a gradual drift away from ideas of
non proprietary toward ideas of access to software s code level. This mirrored an evident diffusion of
these open ideas into the cultural sphere. Open publishing, open editing, open music, and open culture
are now hip buzzwords that point toward a new cultural formation based on a more free exchange ...

Wikipedia.org, an open source encyclopedia, describes this conflict of terms.
It was hoped that the usage of the newer term open source would eliminate such ambiguity, and would
also be easier to market to business users (who might mistakenly associate free software with anti
commericalism). Since its introduction, however, the open source label has been criticized for
fostering an ambiguity of a different kind: that of confusing it for mere availability of the source,
rather than the freedom to use, modify, and redistribute it.
One of the early defects of free software was the perceived inability to use it in for profit ventures.
Whereas the Free Software movement thinks of the freedom of software s code to be available to all
as an ethical and social imperative, open source treats it as a practical issue. Both GPL and open
source licenses can be used in for profit ventures. Copylefted material must remain free for people to
modify, but can be priced for people to buy.
With the advent of the term open source, it now appears that everything is open source, or is at least
sold that way. When not applied to programming, open content is used to describe a wide range of
activities that have nothing to do with computer software. There is still the problem of

The Book The Ghost Writer
In the book The Ghost Writer, the story is centered around Nathan Zuckerman, who struggles with
whether his Jewish identity should affect how his story about Jewish people is interpreted. As a result,
Roth presents a series of characters that have jewish related backgrounds, including E. I. Lonoff, Amy
Bellette who resembles Anne Frank, for Nathan to observe and learn from. However, there is Hope,
the wife of Lonoff, who seems to have none of the things Nathan needs; she is not jewish, neither a
writer, but only a determined and thoughtful woman who prefer depth over boredom in life. Philip
Roth chooses to include her in the novel to present that even without the context of identity, being a
pure artist is dangerous to oneself and the surrounding love ones. With the huge success of E. I.
Lonoff on professional career and his bad temper on personal life, one would expect his wife to be
only a subsequent character who serves the purpose of supporting him. Such conclusion can be made
when looking at Hope s language when interacting with Nathan in front of Lonoff. Under normal
relationships between a couple, one should not need to explain another to their guests to make the
guests feel more respected. However, when Lonoff is directing Nathan on the subject of apology,
Hope feels the necessity of her interrupting the conversation, to explain and emphasize Lonoff s good
intentions behind the imperative voice and the superiority feelings (39) of him. In this situation, the

Integrated Reporting And An Understanding Of A Company s...
Integrated Reporting is a more holistic approach to gaining an understanding of a company s
performance. It takes into consideration factors including the environment, society and governance
when evaluating a company s performance and strategizing on a future course of action. One of the
most recent and promising developments in Integrated Reporting has been the release of the Integrated
International Reporting Framework by the International Integrated Reporting Council. This paper
assesses the opportunities, benefits, challenges and limitations of this framework.
Introduction
The Integrated International Reporting Framework was introduced by the International Integrated
Reporting Council (IIRC) to guide the entire integrated reporting process and also to clearly define
key ideas and concepts of this framework. Given some of the confusion surrounding this framework
among companies and accountants in New Zealand with respect to what precisely the Integrated IR
Framework is and how it might affect accounting practice, this essay purports to clearly explain the
framework. Further, this paper will also critically examine the framework, highlighting some of the
salient opportunities, benefits, challenges and limitations of this approach. Finally, it will briefly
reflect upon the implication of the framework for accounting practice.

Humanistic Theory On The Jarvis Family
Implementing the Humanistic Theory on the Jarvis Family Introduction Most cases that are being
investigated by social work agencies often include various parts, people and ways in which the client
is helped. The case involving the Jarvis family is a case of reported sexual child abuse. Child Welfare
Services became aware of the abuse when Kay Partridge, school nurse, contacted the agency in fear of
the children s well being. The case came about after Marie and Joanne Jarvis teachers noticed a
change in the girls behaviors and had reported in to the principle who then contacted Ms. Partridge.
Eventually Marie and Joanne had admitted that their father, Kenneth Jarvis, had been sexually abusing
them for years. Also, their mother, Jean Jarvis, had admitted to know about the abuse, but was unsure
of how she could protect both herself and her children from Mr. Jarvis. As a result, the agency is
hoping to work with Mrs. Jarvis and her daughters to help them cope with the effects of the incident
can have on Marie, Joanne, and Mrs. Jarvis. In order to help the family, the social worker would
implement a human behavior therapy as a way for both parties to understand why they, the client, are
behaving in a certain way. It also helps to identify ways that the client can further be helped. The
implementation of the humanistic theory is a useful way to gain a better understanding of the client
and their behavior as whole. Issues Due to the events that had occurred with Kenneth

Tips For Maintaining Your Car s Tires And Identifying When Replacement Is Needed
Many drivers do not even think about their car s tires until there is a major problem. The truth is that
poorly maintained tires can affect the performance of your car and potentially put you and your
passengers in danger. For example, having your tires underinflated by 25% can cause tire failure to
occur. Her is how you can maintain your car s tires along with signs of when it is time to replace them.
Maintenance
Air Pressure
Take a close look at your tires to find out how much air pressure is needed to keep them properly
inflated. Too much air can cause the tire to have a blowout when driving at high speeds when the
internal temperature increases. Too little ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The improper balance will cause unintentional wear and tear on your tires, which can lead to the tires
needing to be replaced sooner than the others.
If you notice that your care is slightly veering to one side when driving while your hands are off the
wheel it could be a sign of a tire misalignment. Your local auto shop can perform a wheel alignment to
get your tired back on track. They will also rotate your tires at the same time to help increase their
lifespan.
Replacement Signs
Tire Tread
You do not need a fancy tire gauge to tell if it is time to replace your tires, because all you need is a
penny. Stick it head first into the tread. If you can see the top of Lincoln s head, it s a sign you need to
get new tires.
Uneven wear is also a clear sign you need replacement. Just run your hand over the tread and feel how
smooth it is. If you feel noticeable bumps in the tread, it is time to replace your tires.
Vibration
If you did not feel the bumps in the tires then you might feel it when driving. Those uneven treads will
translate to a vibration when you driver your car, especially at high speeds. While bad struts and
shocks could also be causing the vibration, confirm your suspicious by investigating the tire

Texas State Economic Profile Summary Texas
The Lone Star state also known as Texas is ranked second in area and population. With a growing
population and a decreasing unemployment rate the state has a borderline healthy economy. With an
average infrastructure grade and an 8.8 million surplus the state is looking good all around.
State Economic Profile Summary Texas
Brief History of Texas
The recorded history of Texas begins with the arrival of the first Spanish conquistadors. Attracted by
the rich lands for cotton, plantations, and ranching, tens of thousands of immigrants arrived from the
U.S. In 1845, Texas joined the United States becoming the 28th state. Located in the south central part
of the country. The language is dominated by English but Spanish is spoken there as well.
Brief Overview of Texas s Economy
Texas would be the 14th largest economy in the world as a stand alone country by Gross Domestic
Product. The state is border line healthy but does have a growing GDP. The infrastructure is average
definitely room for improvement. It is said that Texas is going to have 12.4 percent more revenue to
spend in the next TWO budget years. I define Texas s economy as borderline healthy even though
everything is looking positive for Texas because just two years ago there were panics in certain areas
of being in debt. They are now getting their state back to being healthy and as long as they keep
making smart decisions and start working on the cities/towns little by little they will remain healthy.

Native American Colonization
Shortly following Columbus s encounter with the new world in 1492, European settlers would make
the long journey to North America in hopes of land, riches, and freedom. However, little did they
consider the lives of the Native Americans, who had been there long before Columbus s discovery , or
how they would disrupt their ancient customs and way of life. Upon the arrival of the Europeans, the
Native Americans were experiencing an agricultural revolution, where tribes all across the United
States were becoming more sedentary, as well as developing new sources of food, clothing, and
shelter. With the intrusion of the influx of Europeans, however, all of this was disrupted with their
selfish and incognizant actions. The English tended to oppress Native Americans both economically
and culturally by denying their potential contributions to help grow settlements in the New World. In
contrast, the French developed peaceful, mutually beneficial relations with Native Americans in the
establishment of the French fur trade and culturally befriended them. With England s growing
economic problems due to frequent, costly European wars, and harsh manoralism in the countryside,
the New World seemed like a place where English settlement could start anew, and create a perfect,
cohesive society, unlike that of the flawed Old World. From the beginning of their intrusion in North
America, English settlers sought to expand English rule and law over the Indians, who they referred to

Another aspect of diction that Stuff You Should Know utilizes effectively is simplicity, it is important
to keep diction simple and clear in order to create a sense of cohesiveness when speaking which also
allows the listeners to understand the points being made. For instance The laws governing the
regulation of cosmetics have not changed in any way, shape or form (23:45, episode 1). When one of
the hosts were talking the law in terms of cosmetic safety and how it has been unmodified since a
century ago, he uses very simplistic terms in order to keep his points clear, cohesive and easy to
follow from the perspective of the listener. This is important as many podcasts do not give enough
recognition into the importance of keeping your diction simple at certain points in order to allow the
listener to fully understand the point being made.
There were some negative applications of diction throughout some of the episodes, where the diction
was far too simple which lead to vagueness and confusion. For instance I wish I was into the old
mario whatever that one was the big world one (4:43, Episode 2) This is simply confusing and
incohesive in painting a picture in the reader s mind or persuading them to ascertain to a point being
made. The host of the podcast having used overly simplistic terms was a negative utilization of diction
as it distracts the listener from the actual point being made and causes sorts of disruption. From the
listener s perspective, it would

A Study On Strength Training Essay

muscles of the thighs, hips and gluteus, quads (vastus lateralus, medialis and intermedius and rectus

throughout the lower body. Squats are considered a vital exercise for increasing the strength and size
of the legs and buttocks, as well as developing core. The lower back, the upper back, the abdominals,
the trunk muscles and the shoulders and arms are all essential to the exercise. Up until the 1950s, the

The 1800 s preliminary were perhaps the main impacted time periods, due to colonisation within NZ
affecting the health of people. Colonisation of New Zealand was Pākehā taking control of the
surroundings and different component in New Zealand, in which they use power and domination to
take over the current people already living before them.
Pre Pākehā the current state of health was to believed to be well sustained and before the Pākehā came
they were numerously health and lived long (Lange, 1999). The traditional methods of health practise
that were used weren t; enough to fight of the possibilities of diseases that occurred within that stage

Bill Ezzard Short Story
William Ezzard so far has had an exciting yet typical life. Learn about his weird and different hobbies,
what happened when he made a mistake, and how his career came to be. When Bill Ezzard was a kid,
things were different than they are today. When he would write, other than using pencil and paper, he
would type on a typewriter, and if he made a mistake, he would use this correction tape which was
like a white out kind of substance. What he would do, was slip it into He would do his research at the
library through books and people themselves, which made him work harder. He had a TV, and it was
on only when the news was on, which only came on at 6 pm every night. He would write letters to his
friends, especially if they live far away, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ezzards wife for 20+ years. They will celebrate their 21 anniversary in December. When they first
met, Mr. Ezzard went to a Peace Corp interview, and Mr. Ezzard saw her for the first time. Apparently
she was in the Peace Corp and taught in Jamaica a few years back. Before Mr. Ezzard was accepted
someplace to teach, he would call her up about once or twice a week and ask if he got accepted. When
she would say no, he d ask her if she wanted to have lunch, because he was in Boston, where she was.
Her response to almost every offer was No, maybe next time. On a typical morning, Mr. Ezzard called
her up, asked her if he was accepted, and, to his surprise, he was. He was accepted in two places: in
1994 1996 he went to Micronesia, and in 1997 1998 he went to the Solomon Islands. He found this the
perfect opportunity to ask Becky out again. This time, she said Sure. She told her workers that she d
be back by a certain time, but if it went well, she d take the rest of the day off. After lunch, she didn t
go home, (meaning it went well!). They walked around Boston for a while, and then he dropped her
off at her house. After about nine months of dating, Mr. Ezzard proposed to her, and in 1994 they got
married.
Mr. Bill Ezzard has never had a moment where he could say Writing isn t my thing. He has always
been a huge fan of writing. Ever since he was a kid, writing was something he enjoyed. That is why he
became a writing teacher. Ezzard went to college knowing he wanted to do something with his writing
skill, but was lost with an idea of what. He was visiting his school counselor one day, and she asked
him what he wanted to do in life. He thought for about a minute, and then it clicked: he wanted to be a

Jury Trial Experience
On the internship at the Miami County District Court, Kansas Together with colleagues from ULIM
and other universities, I undertook a legal internship at the Miami County District Court, Kansas,
organized by the Leavitt Institute for international development. We had the privilege to watch in
action the US judges, prosecutors and lawyers. At the Johnson County District Court, I have witnessed
a jury trial. This was the highlight of our overseas experience, as the 12 citizen deciding on the
innocence of the defendant are the core of the American legal system. We were really surprised by the
American journalists interest in us, students from Moldova studying their justice system. Following

Thanks to the efforts of the American counterpart, the young lawyers that really want to change the
system are identified and given the chance to network. The US experience will allow me to do my part
in ensuring a better functioning of our justice system. The Leavitt Institute Courses The teaching
methods of the Canadian and US professors are very different from those that we are used to in high
school or university. Our american teachers used the socratic method to make us come to the right
answers through open discussions and the fact that the lectures were not mandatory eliminates some of
the frustration that we re not always performing optimally. The JET Initiative helps the development
of critical thinking and represents a good occasion to practice English for both beginners and
advanced students. A big advantage in this sense is the translation provided throughout the courses. At
the final of the lecture cycle, the students representing the six universities implicated in the project use
the theoretical knowledge in a simulated trial environment. They play lawyers and prosecutors

Julius Caesar Influence
Out, out, brief candle! Life s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets his hour upon
the stage and then is heard no more: it is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying
nothing. Macbeth Act 5 Scene 5. Shakespeare brought about a new and relatable style of playwriting.
His plays amazed a mass number of people and still influence and feed into modern theater. Romeo
and Juliet, Hamlet, Julius Caesar were all unique in the writing style or storytelling. Shakespeare was
definitely one of the greatest authors and playwrights in history. Although it was no official recording
or information of Shakespeare being educated it can very well be assumed that he did attend the

Osiris Role In Ancient Egyptian Religion
Osiris was a god who originates from ancient Egypt. Osiris is most famous for being the patron deity
of death, the afterlife, and resurrection, but this was not always the case. As stated in Isis character
summary, Osiris was formerly the patron of civilization and advancement preceding his untimely
murder at the hands of Seth, his evil and dastardly brother. After Osiris demise, the civilization god
transformed into the god of death and the afterlife. Though Osiris death did cause a shift in what he
oversaw, his role as the god of the underworld played a major and influential part in the ancient
Egyptian religion. His influence stretches from the time a person dies and is properly buried in a
sarcophagus to when they stand before the 42 assessor gods who are each ... Show more content on

These declarations of innocence exhibit what ancient Egyptians thought were actions that would make
someone impure and socially dirty. Even after endless trials and ordeals the deceased must undergo,
Osiris still has full authority over who can be admitted to his realm and who s soul will dissipate and
cease to exist. Osiris is described as a male who adorns an Atef Crown, which is a primitive Egyptian
symbol for rule of the underworld. Green black skin covers the outer layers of this divinity, and in his
hand he holds an ostrich feather, which is similar to an Ankh in its meaning, and a crook and flail.
These two objects are commonly seen as symbols of Osiris. The crook, which is the curved object in
Osiris right hand that is similar to the sickle in its shape, is defined as a sign of kingship, and the flail,
which is an agrarian tool that Osiris holds in his left hand, is defined as a sign of the fertility of
Egyptian land. These two objects show the kingship and power that Osiris held over the souls he held

The Importance Of Writing And Writing Skills In The...
The English language has turned into the world s most widely used language. It is the principal
language for global communications in various fields including trade, industry, legislative issues, and
training. This is the main motivation behind why a large number of learners throughout the world are
endeavoring to enhance their English language capability. A basic segment of this capability is
enhancing one s ability for writing since this ability is absolutely essential for employment in recent
years. One vital factor to consider with writing competency is spelling as one single incorrectly
spelled word can change a word or the purpose of the entire sentence. Moreover, the weakness in
spelling significantly affects writing and reading abilities. In other words, the orthographic or spelling
learning is the driving force for productive reading and proficient writing. Good spelling information
is also critical for recognizing the words, which can enormously improve or obstruct reading skill.
Concerning writing, poor spelling can make writing a troublesome task by too much attention to
spelling. Poor spelling likewise confines the writer s selection of words, which contrarily affects
innovativeness and prompts short and incoherent parts in writing (Baluch and Shahidi, 1991). As a
rule, writing skill development for ESL students is mainly affected by the words, for example, spelling
and word recognition that rely upon comparable skills, to be specific, orthographic and

  • 2. The Effects Of Religion On Athletic Performance Introduction Many athletes are superstitious, or go through the same series of progressions or habits before competition, because they believe it gives them luck or a better chance to perform optimally. Some of these habits, may include praying. The act of praying is a way for an athlete to think they can attain an edge, so they can compete better. During my time as an intern with Fordham Athletics, I was given many opportunities to spend time with athletes from a variety of sports. My interactions with these athletes, as well as my own experience as a college athlete who prayed before competitions, triggered my interest in the relationship between prayer, and athletic performance. Does prayer before competition affect the overall performance of an athlete? In this paper I will examine the effects of religion and prayer on an athlete going into competition, as well as how it affects an athlete s overall performance. Literature Review There has been scarce documentation covering the effects of religion on athletic performance. Up until two decades ago, articles and research consisted largely of people saying an athletes religious beliefs had no effect on their overall performance. • 3. Bullying Is An Emotional And Physical Draining Issue Bullying is an emotional and physical draining issue that is prominent throughout the world today. School bullying has been identified as a major problem in many countries and almost anyone you come across has a story they can tell about it. Bullying can create a hard lifestyle for someone who is victimized, and can threaten a person s opportunities in life in the near future. The social climate of a school is a replica of the world outside. All fifty states have passed school anti bullying legislation, but each state addresses bullying differently. It is equally important that where people develop a large portion of their mortality, their understanding how the world works and how their sense of responsibility goes towards the society they live in. The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing. That quote stated by Albert Einstein is similar to the bullying cycle that was created by an American nurse. There are five steps in the bullying cycle and each plays their own specific role. The first in the bullying cycle is the bully. The bully is the main aggressor and is typically influenced in looking for power or control over another human being. Also, the bully is either looking for attention or possess a strong self esteem towards themselves or others. Next in the bullying cycle is the passive defenders. Passive defenders are defenders who dislike the bully or the actions taking place but will do nothing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Essay on The Enduring Loyalty, Love, and Compassion of... Imagine leaving your wealth, home, family, and even country behind for twenty years. While away, people will inevitably attempt to steal your possessions, seduce your spouse, and act as though you will never return. Most likely, more people will try to harm your estate than those who will continue working and behaving in an honest manner. This notion holds true in Homer s epic poem, The Odyssey. While Odysseus wages war and struggles to return to Ithaka , a multitude of suitors court his wife and live at the cost of his possessions. On the other hand, a few people like Eumaios remain steadfast to the truth and work to maintain Odysseus estate and possessions. When everyone else had finished dinner and went to bed for the evening, Eumaios took a sharpened lance, and went to rest / under a hollow rock where swine were sleeping (14.629 30). Homer uses this as an opportunity to show that Eumaios truly treasured his swine; instead of sleeping like the others, he ventures out into the cold to watch over the vulnerable swine. Later, when TelĆ©makhos returns from searching for Odysseus, it is remarked that Eumaios kissed the young man s head, his shining eyes / and both hands, while his own tears brimmed and fell (16.21 2). In Odysseus absence, Eumaios essentially assumes the paternal role in TelĆ©makhos life, and Eumaios was ecstatic to see that his son had returned safely to Ithaka and avoided the murderous suitors. Another emotional scene takes place when Odysseus reveals himself to the faithful swineherd and cowherd. In each version of Cinderella, Grimm, Disney, and Italy one greater theme stands out among all others. Carr writes how companies personalize ads they provide on the internet based on our personal information. We are not aware of the consequences and the information we disclose about ourselves on the internet. Everything we do on the internet is recorded and stored. Nicholas Carr uses ethos and counter argument/refutation to express to his audience that their privacy is being violated. Carr utilizes ethical appeals to identify to his readers that he/she has a right to their own privacy and how companies and organizations are violating it. He strengthens his ethical appeal and argument by collecting ample evidence from professionals in the field. Carr writes, ...the computer consultant Tom Owad... wrote a simple piece of software that allowed him to download public wish lists that Amazon.com customers post to catalog products that they plan to purchase...Mr. Owad ended up with maps of the United States showing the locations of people interested in particular books and ideas... By putting an expert s research on his essay, Carr s audience will be convinced which will lead them to trust him more. Another example where Carr uses an expert s opinion is when he notes, As the computer security expert Bruce Schneier has observed, privacy is not just a screen we hide behind when we do something naughty or embarrassing; privacy is intrinsic to the concept of liberty. When we feel that we re always being watched, we begin to lose our sense of self reliance and free will and, along with it, our individuality (Carr 439). The decorations, especially the sculptures, were one of the chief features of a Greek temple. Besides their temples the Greeks built many theaters which may be studied from their ruins, but of their dwelling houses almost nothing remains to us. The Greek style is noted for the repose, harmony, and proportion of its effect. This makes it doubly interesting for it shows that although the Greeks nearly always adhered to one simple form, they could dispense with it when they wished. In the Erechtheum, they wished to provide for several shrines in one building, and under one roof. The irregularity they have made so beautiful and interesting that it is a wonder they did not repeat the idea many times in other structures. Its two colonnades of different designs, its remarkable north doorway, and the famous caryatid porch to the south are unsurpassed. It is assumed that the variables are not moderated by each other. It also assumes that the variables directly affect health behaviour and we remain resilient by our behavioural intentions. The second weakness is that important factors of health behaviour, such as the positive effects of negative behaviours and social influence are not included in the model, neither are affecting social and economic factors. World War 1 was known at the time as the, the war to end all wars. The war fought between July 28, 1914, and November 11, 1918, during this period of time the perception of war and the casualties of war changed immensely. This changed of perception can be established through the poets of Wilfred Owen and Rupert Brooke. In the poems, The Soldier (1914), by Rupert Brooke, and Dulce et Decorum Est (October 1917), by Wilfred Owen, both poets use language techniques to assist the readers to comprehend each text. The Soldier is a portrayal of Rupert Brooke s eternal love for his country as he goes to war. Rupert uses personification to structure his poem in the outline of a sonnet to portray the soldier s extreme nationalism for England. While Wilfred describes the ugly reality of war in his poem, Dulce et Decorum Est. Through the efficient use of metaphors and a rhyme scheme, Owen s poem leaves a lasting image on the mind s of the audience. Among the poems Dulce et Decorum Est and The Soldier, there are a numeral similarity. The use of Titling, is created to mislead the reader, in the sense that the terms are used to contradict the content of the poem. He is not allowing himself to function as he was made to function, and a house divided against itself cannot stand. In Europe, educators contemplated bringing sex education to the classrooms as early as the late 19th century. In America, schools first began to implement sex education in the mid 1920s. In a book that talks about the social, political, and local goals of schooling, the author states, Originally sex education was promoted in 1926 by the National Education Association s committee on Character Education as a means of combatting the decline of the family and regulating sexual impulses for the good of society (Moral Values and Sex Education). In other words, schools wanted to teach students how to control their sex drive, but almost increase in making families. In my opinion, I don t think that makes much sense. Sex education is just as controversial in other countries as it is in the United States. Fascists in Italy and Germany thought Marxists were the ones that thought of this type of education. Several parents told their children they came from Santa Clause, the gooseberry tree, and even fished out of the river. Although a lot of open minded, progressive countries thought sex was too contentious of a subject to be taught in schools, many of the citizens did not want to be the ones that had to teach their children about the birds and the bees. Joseph Zimmerman who wrote about the global history of sex education stated, It was left to the schools and teachers to help dispel any cultural myths surrounding sex (Zimmerman). • 23. The Sonnets Of The Sonnet In The 17th Century Prior to the 17th century, poetry was not only predominantly written by males, but also catered to their ideas, interests, and views. During this time, women were limited in their expression and were silenced to anything other than their household duties. Among this era, Elizabeth Barrett was born in 1806 to a family of great wealth in Durham, England. Under a very traditional, strict household, she was the eldest of 12 children. Her father, Edward, was very controlling and forbid all of his daughters from marrying. Although, he did encourage highly encourage their studies. Elizabeth began to explore beyond her traditional studies and took an interest in poetry, literature, and various languages. At a very young age, she could read the works of many well known scholars. Unfortunately, Elizabeth became very ill, which in turn affected not only her well being but over overall mindset. Although her circumstances grew worse, she was able to spend more time on her studies. Elizabeth later became a very influential poet, writing the Sonnets of the Portuguese, challenging the traditional male dominance in writing through her new view, writing style, and the concept of love. With Elizabeth s gloomy outlook on life, and the overbearing traditional sense of love from her father, she was certain that she would never find true love or even marry. The idea of a non proprietary method of cultural exchange was and is a radical departure from traditional models that have come to restrict creativity and free exchange. In the ensuing years, there was a gradual drift away from ideas of non proprietary toward ideas of access to software s code level. Wikipedia.org, an open source encyclopedia, describes this conflict of terms. It was hoped that the usage of the newer term open source would eliminate such ambiguity, and would also be easier to market to business users (who might mistakenly associate free software with anti commericalism). Since its introduction, however, the open source label has been criticized for fostering an ambiguity of a different kind: that of confusing it for mere availability of the source, rather than the freedom to use, modify, and redistribute it. One of the early defects of free software was the perceived inability to use it in for profit ventures. Whereas the Free Software movement thinks of the freedom of software s code to be available to all as an ethical and social imperative, open source treats it as a practical issue. Both GPL and open source licenses can be used in for profit ventures. Copylefted material must remain free for people to modify, but can be priced for people to buy. With the advent of the term open source, it now appears that everything is open source, or is at least sold that way. The Book The Ghost Writer In the book The Ghost Writer, the story is centered around Nathan Zuckerman, who struggles with whether his Jewish identity should affect how his story about Jewish people is interpreted. As a result, Roth presents a series of characters that have jewish related backgrounds, including E. I. Lonoff, Amy Bellette who resembles Anne Frank, for Nathan to observe and learn from. However, there is Hope, the wife of Lonoff, who seems to have none of the things Nathan needs; she is not jewish, neither a writer, but only a determined and thoughtful woman who prefer depth over boredom in life. Philip Roth chooses to include her in the novel to present that even without the context of identity, being a pure artist is dangerous to oneself and the surrounding love ones. With the huge success of E. I. Lonoff on professional career and his bad temper on personal life, one would expect his wife to be only a subsequent character who serves the purpose of supporting him. Such conclusion can be made when looking at Hope s language when interacting with Nathan in front of Lonoff. Under normal relationships between a couple, one should not need to explain another to their guests to make the guests feel more respected. However, when Lonoff is directing Nathan on the subject of apology, Hope feels the necessity of her interrupting the conversation, to explain and emphasize Lonoff s good intentions behind the imperative voice and the superiority feelings (39) of him. Humanistic Theory On The Jarvis Family Implementing the Humanistic Theory on the Jarvis Family Introduction Most cases that are being investigated by social work agencies often include various parts, people and ways in which the client is helped. The case involving the Jarvis family is a case of reported sexual child abuse. Child Welfare Services became aware of the abuse when Kay Partridge, school nurse, contacted the agency in fear of the children s well being. The case came about after Marie and Joanne Jarvis teachers noticed a change in the girls behaviors and had reported in to the principle who then contacted Ms. Partridge. Eventually Marie and Joanne had admitted that their father, Kenneth Jarvis, had been sexually abusing them for years. Also, their mother, Jean Jarvis, had admitted to know about the abuse, but was unsure of how she could protect both herself and her children from Mr. Jarvis. As a result, the agency is hoping to work with Mrs. Jarvis and her daughters to help them cope with the effects of the incident can have on Marie, Joanne, and Mrs. Jarvis. In order to help the family, the social worker would implement a human behavior therapy as a way for both parties to understand why they, the client, are behaving in a certain way. It also helps to identify ways that the client can further be helped. Native American Colonization Shortly following Columbus s encounter with the new world in 1492, European settlers would make the long journey to North America in hopes of land, riches, and freedom. However, little did they consider the lives of the Native Americans, who had been there long before Columbus s discovery , or how they would disrupt their ancient customs and way of life. Upon the arrival of the Europeans, the Native Americans were experiencing an agricultural revolution, where tribes all across the United States were becoming more sedentary, as well as developing new sources of food, clothing, and shelter. With the intrusion of the influx of Europeans, however, all of this was disrupted with their selfish and incognizant actions. The English tended to oppress Native Americans both economically and culturally by denying their potential contributions to help grow settlements in the New World. In contrast, the French developed peaceful, mutually beneficial relations with Native Americans in the establishment of the French fur trade and culturally befriended them. With England s growing economic problems due to frequent, costly European wars, and harsh manoralism in the countryside, the New World seemed like a place where English settlement could start anew, and create a perfect, cohesive society, unlike that of the flawed Old World.
