I had the opportunity to attend the Why do the police think I m a thug?
Stereotypes of African American males in the media event. The event opened up
with a video clip titled Black Men in America and then we had a chance to have a
discussion panel with an African man named Nicholas Peart, who has been
stopped and frisked numerous times by the NYPD. The video clip, Black Men in
America, explains how mainstream media has a negative image of African
Americans males and portrayers them as criminals, drug dealers and rappers. In
the video Spike Lee, a film director explains how it s hard to push the media away
from the stereotype images of black men, because the viewers of these shows and
movies don t want see positive actions, they want to see violence. Lee stated his
tried to steer away from these images by creating movies; such as, Malcolm X and
Do the Right Thing, but as a result these films never made it to the theaters. After
the video clip, Nicholas Peart, a black activist opened a discussion on the issue, by
telling the audience stories of when his been stopped and frisked. He stated after
being stopped so many times he started using Facebook and Twitter to express his
feelings and talk about his experiences. Peart explained that being stopped and frisk
was never a shock to him because ever since he was young his mother enforced him
that he might be stopped by the police one day. His mother told him to always carry

Psychological And Emotional Effects Of Psychological Abuse
Psychological abuse, which includes verbal and emotional abuse, is a widespread
and common problem in our society. Mary Jo Fay (2007), states that verbal abuse,
includes name calling, shouting and yelling. She also goes on to say that emotional
abuse: includes blaming, accusing and restricting your freedom like preventing you
from using the phone or talking to family members, or recording the mileage on your
car to see if you ve driven somewhere not allowed. Attempting to confuse you

What makes psychological abuse such a large issue is that it is not recognized by
most as a true form of abuse. Therefore, the victims of psychological abuse cannot
get the help that they need. This is such a critical problem because the only way
for the victims of psychological abuse to be helped is for the bystanders of this
crime to recognize and take a stand for the victims. The everyday people in the lives
of psychologically abused victims need to be the ones that help them because these
critical bystanders are the only ones who can.
The reason that psychological abuse is not taken seriously is that there is a mass
cultural acceptance that people are going to say mean things. People in our culture
are taught at a young age that everyone should just take the insults in stride and keep

Throughout the years, the LGBT community has put forth tremendous effort to gain
rights and recognition in the United States. Yet there have been numerous laws that
have discriminated and made them feel unequal. LGBT stands for Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual, and Transgendered. Many people in the community have a hard time
accepting who they truly are in terms of sexual orientationor gender identity. Coming

To avoid unwanted pressure of growing up, in J.D. Salinger s The Catcher in the
Rye and P.J. Hogan s Peter Pan, the main characters Holden Caulfield and Peter Pan
identify and evade their main source of stress, their parents. In Salinger s The
Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield struggles to move on with his life, he stops
trying and drops out of the schooling that his parents put him in. His parents hoped
for him to succeed and would be disappointed to find out that he had not met their
expectations. Because of this, Holden avoids his parents and the unwanted
pressure, he s not ready to grow up and decides to stay in New York City for a
