Many experimenters have been interested in figuring out how well jurors can
disregard inadmissible evidence in the courtroom. They want to know exactly when
and what type of evidence can be omitted while in trial. Werner, Kagehiro, and Strube
(1982) tested participants looking for authoritarians that would have had the anti
defendant bias. Authoritarians are more likely to be unable to disregard inadmissible
evidence because have a bias against the defendant from the start. Acting like mock
jurors, they all read summaries of a trial that held six pieces of circumstantial
evidence presented by the prosecution. An incriminating or exonerating wiretap
evidence was added as a seventh item for some conditions. The evidence, ruled either
inadmissible or admissible, tested the participants ability to disregard the evidence
when declaring a verdict. They were randomly assigned to a condition in a between
subjects design that was a 2 (admissibility or inadmissibility of the wiretap evidence)
X 2 (incriminating or exonerating wiretap evidence). They were asked to estimate the

that grins and lies because the mask is portraying human like qualities. The mask

maintain a steady rhythm all throughout the piece in this case, it s 8 syllables per
line. Dunbar, by using a clear tone of both anger and sadness in his poem, makes it
notable that he is also an African American who has to hide his emotions behind
the mask . Apart from the tone he uses, Dunbar also uses the pronoun we which
automatically informs the reader that he s included in the group of people he s
writing about. He makes his rage at having to hide his true emotions well known in
the beginning of the poem, as well as his despair at the end of the poem when he
states that the world will dream while continuing to wear the mask . In other words,
he says that they will remain hopeful while continuing to hide their sadness behind a
fake smile. Dunbar s overall statement in We Wear the Mask is that these African
Americans, including himself, not once revealed all of the sadness, anger, and agony
they went through; they simply smiled and faked their happiness while they were
anguished and hurting inside, probably to avoid provoking conflict with Caucasian
