Why College Education Is Important to Me
Why college education is important to me . By Janelle D. Crichlow EN110 Achieving Academic
Excellence Ashworth College A college degree is important for a variety of reasons for both the young
and the old, namely to develop or improve one s trade skills, to experience different cultures and to
increase one s educational background in order to attain a higher paying job. For me, a college degree
is important because it will help me to attain the educational background I need to make myself more
marketable in the ever changing workforce. It will also provide me with the confidence and skills
needed to apply for a better paying job or aid me in attaining the ever elusive promotion, if I so desire.

For me personally, the college degree obtained will aid me in being able to better complete the tasks to
which I am assigned at work. It will also give my boss actual evidence that I have the necessary skills
needed to be promoted to a higher and better paying position. A college degree will give me the
knowledge base I need to compete in the workforce. College life makes it possible for students to
meet and be acquainted with people from all works of life and to possibly build work contacts with
these people later in life. It provides students with access to differing cultures, personalities and
attitudes and provides students with the playground to learn to handle them. Due to the fact that a
college student is exposed to varying subject matters, both in and out of his faculty, a student can
demonstrate to his employee that he is better equipped to handle learning new concepts since he is
more well rounded and knowledgeable in different areas, both in and out of his job scope. The
efficiency at making and completing short, medium and long term goals, displayed by the student,
allows the employer to ascertain how effective the employee will be at setting and achieving his goals
and how effective he will be with time management and multitasking. In conclusion, a college degree
will provide me with the hope and means of attaining the heights I intend to reach in my workplace. It
will provide me with the confidence and peace of mind that I can take

Sabotage In Ww2
When world war two occurred, Americans feared sabotage and Japanese in general because they were
considered to be spies that were helping Japan in the war. So Americans started gathering Japanese
Americans and other people they thought could be a threat to lock them in internment or concentration
camps. Americans didn t care that most Japanese concentrated in these camps were not supporting,
and they simply snatched people away from their homes and memories for the so called country s
safety. In the article, Executive Order of 9066, it is mentioned that Franklin Roosevelt feared
destruction and decided to ship all the Japanese to a place where they couldn t communicate with the
outside world, but could attend school and have access to medical care and to other basic needs. In the
article, Their Way to Show Loyalty, it said that 2to prevent sabotage, The most sensible ... way to

Honestly, before trying to point out mistakes in the world, point out your mistakes first. Don t think
you can change the world without changing the world first. Gandhi once said, Be the change that you

Differences between people are created when people feel superior than others, so stop thinking this

repeating itself and why people felt ashamed and humiliated. Most importantly, do not judge others.

Percy Jackson And The Olympians Research Paper
To what extent does American author Rick Riordan accurately portray the Greek gods in his series
Percy Jackson and the Olympians as compared to the actual Greek myths and legends? How does
Riordan characterize the gods and what effect does his portrayal of them have on the story? In the
series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, author Rick Riordan juxtaposes ancient Greek mythology
with the modern world. The series tell the story of the title character, demigod Percy Jackson and his
friends as they goes on quests to, quite literally, save the world. The Greek gods have an essential role
in the series as they provide help and give advice to the demigods, and, more often than not, are the
root of all problems. Riordan takes the personas of the gods from various myths and ... Show more

The only major difference between Poseidon in the series and in the myths is the physical appearance.
This singular trait is one of the few that actually have an effect if changed; in the series, Poseidon does
not look majestic and has a more laidback and simple look and vibe. Throughout the series, Poseidon s
status as a god often causes the other characters to be intimidated by him; if he were to be described as
majestic in the series, he would be more imposing than he already is. In addition, he is described as
wearing modern clothes in the series; if he were to lose this quality and be dressed in ancient Greek
clothing, Poseidon would become less relatable to the young adult audience and the series would lose
some of its modernity. One of the major obstacles Percy struggles with is learning how to approach
and impress Poseidon, his father. Being able to talk to Poseidon and get advice from him helps Percy
complete his quests and resolve major issues which would be more difficult to accomplish if Poseidon

Billy Abbott And Lou Costello
There may not be a more well known comedy routine in the American consciousness than that of Who
s on First? by Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. The routine has been parodied, satirized and imitated by
countless TV shows, movies, and theatre productions, and the joke has become almost a cultural
shorthand for confusing situations.
Because Who s on first? has become such a large part of popular culture, many writers, directors and
producers make allusions to the sketch freely. However, as the producers of one Broadway show
discovered, when allusions become direct reproductions, there may be legal liability for copyright
infringement.
Hand to God Faces Lawsuit
The playwright, producer and promoter of the Broadway play Hand to God were served with a lawsuit
alleging that production infringed on Abbott Costello s copyright to the Who s on First? routine.
The play, which has been nominated for several Tony awards, features a scene where the lead
character, a teenage boy, attempts to impress a girl by performing part of the sketch with a sock
puppet. The girl does not understand the reference, and boy initially tries to claim credit before
eventually admitting that it was a famous routine from the 1950s.
According to the lawsuit, the creators of Hand to God used the dialogue from Who s on First? without
license or permission from the heirs of Abbott Costello, and rejected a request to change the
production after the heirs sent a cease and desist letter. The heirs

Animal Cruelty And Its Effects On Society
For years, animals have been a form of entertainment whether it has been in movies, shows, circuses,
or for a romantic night out. Most families love this type of entertainment because it is kid friendly and
believe it is cool to watch animals do all kinds of tricks. But do they ever wonder what really goes on
behind closed doors? Entertainment animals have had to endure a lot of pain, depression, and torture
in the process; aside from that not all of them have that happy ending. No one enjoys pain, this
includes humans and animals, and so no one should have be force to go through it. Each year
hundreds of animals die from animal cruelty. Animals used for entertainment have to endure pain in
various ways this can be anything from being whipped to being electrocuted. Animals have no way of
saying STOP, stop hurting me all they can do is make noise but most handlers choose to ignore the
cries or enjoy the sound of it. While one is out trying to impress their significant other, they get on a
carriage because they think it is romantic, but do they stop to think that maybe the horse does not
enjoy pulling them around town. Horse drawn carriages have died each year from heat strokes,
inhaling exhaust fumes, and leg problems. Countless other incidents have occurred in which humans
and horses were involved, especially in the city; many of which humans were at fault either for
driving carelessly or impatiently. The local animal control officials are the ones who are supposed to

Dyslexia Teaching
Understanding Dyslexia: Defining, Identifying, and Teaching Research suggests that while there is no
cure for Dyslexia, students can adapt through multi sensory instruction and become successful
members of society (Allen, 2010). In order to instruct students with dyslexia, it is crucial that
educators understand what dyslexia is, what causes it, and the steps to identifying a student who
struggles with reading and shows signs of dyslexia (Allen, 2010). According to Allen (2010), of those
who have identified as having a learning disability, 80% are affected by a reading disability.
According to Dejerine, Dyslexia is suspected to be neurobiological in origin. This is confirmed by
way of functional magnetic resonance imaging (Allen, 2010). ... Show more content on

After their struggles are recognized, good teaching will allow them to perform to the best of their
ability (MacKay, 1997). In order to make students with dyslexia feel more comfortable about reading
there are a few steps to follow. While telling students to read a book and then write a paper on it may
seem like basic instructions, to a student with dyslexia that could seem like a nightmare. MacKay
presents a few steps to follow when reading which include: title, captions, pictures, questions, and
reading. This is very beneficial to a student with dyslexia because his/her brain needs tasks to be
broken down otherwise they will feel like they are out of memory (MacKay, 1997). There are many
organizational tools that are helpful when reading or categorizing information. Brainstorming is a
great tool because no organization is required, it is simply just putting thoughts on paper (MacKay,
1997). When timing is appropriate to organize the information mind maps would be beneficial. Mind
maps are a way to put your ideas together and sort information into paragraphs in order to compile a
paper (MacKay, 1997). For those who do not prefer mind maps another option would be using linear
notes. Linear notes simply means leaving room in the margin for the student to write down facts
he/she feels important (MacKay, 1997). MacKay elaborates that teaching dyslexic students study
skills proves that thinking and reasoning skills can shine even though their basic skills may be a

The Parents Role in School Shootings Essay
When children commit a horrible act such as a school shooting their parents often look for someone or
something to blame rather than looking at what role they, as parents, may have had in the tragedy. The
often targeted entertainers, video game developers, teachers, drug companies, and writers are rarely, if
ever, responsible for such tragic outcomes and, unfortunately, often become victims as a result of
lawsuits filed in an attempt to place blame on them. The parents of dangerous children must be
scrutinized and sued alongside every other entity being blamed for the heinous crimes that children
commit.

Before the 1999 Columbine tragedy, there was the 14 year old boy in Paducah, Kentucky who, in
1997, went on a shooting spree at his local school. Parents of 3 of the shooting victims filed lawsuits
against 25 media companies seeking $130 million in damages, citing that the shooter, Michael
Carneal, learned how to shoot a gun by playing video and computer games. The lawsuits further
implied that violent movies and internet pornography were to blame for the boy s behavior
(Holmstrom, par. 6).
In both the Columbine and the Paducah, Kentucky cases the parents of the shooters were sued on the
grounds that they should have known, and prevented, the tragedies from occurring. According to an
article written by Mark Walsh regarding the Paducah shooting, a state law negligence suit named 45

Examples Of The American Dream In Gran Torino
In today s day and age, it would be very difficult to find someone who has not heard of the American
dream. Although most people have heard of the American dream, if you were to ask a couple people
what the phrase means to them, there would probably be very different responses. With all the various
interpretations of the American dream out there, it has probably become somewhat difficult to truly
understand the meaning behind the phrase. However, no film better portrays what the American dream
is than Gran Torino. In Gran Torino, it is shown that the American dream is much more than owning
large amounts of material objects, but rather being able to live happily in America, and that is a goal
that anyone can reach, no matter the race or gender. As long as they are willing to travel down a
potentially hard road and put in the work, the American dream is attainable. Sometimes on the path of
achieving the American dream, it can be easy to forget what the American dream truly is, and make
the mistake of believing that wealth equates to being successful a person. Almost all of the characters
in Gran Torino are materialistic in their own way. A great example is Walt, who primarily cares about
his car, a material possession which also represents the American dream. The American pragmatist, he
fixes things as well as finishes things. He spends a lifetime accumulating the tools in his garage,
material goods, naming them and knowing how they work. (Alpert) Even though Walt and his

title could be viewed as truth and might ultimately spread by word of mouth to other uninformed
individuals. Unfortunately, the numerous pairs of eyes that scanned the sentences written in this article
soon realized that this news piece was nothing but an instance of fake news . Fake news, is defined as

In order to solve this problem, I believe it is the duty of the American citizen to educate themselves
regarding the validity of their news source. Individuals and nations owe it to themselves and the world
to become informed . It is important for American citizens to be informed regarding the falsehoods of
fake news, as an informed nation would be less susceptible to believing and spreading false
information. Within the scope of American society, it is a relatively feasible task to validate the degree
of truth in a news story. One manner in which an individual can become more informed in regards to
the validity of a specific news source is to use the fact checking resources on Snopes.com. Snopes is a
website dedicated to assigning truth ratings to articles through the process of first hand contact with
the primary source of a publication, contact with experts in the subject area relevant to the information
presented in the article, and a meticulous comparison and contrast with other news outlets . A website
such as Snopes should not be relied on entirely however to decipher whether an article is fake news or
not. Individuals should also take some time to perform other precautionary actions such as, conducting
background research on the authors of news articles,

Sexism In America Today
The article I read was You re Sexist. And So Am I from USA Today. This article went into discussing
how everyone has internalized sexism, believing in sexism in their head, whether they like to believe
it or not. This is because society teaches people norms that women must follow in order for them to be
respected. As we have discussed in class, this is the idea of subjectivity because all of these social
codes are predetermined and that makes them very difficult to change. One example of this was in the
article when it talked about how women often chose their careers around them someday becoming
mothers. Women are expected to have children and then take time off from work to raise their
children. No one believes that men should be expected to stay at home and raise children because it is
not the societal norm. Therefore when a woman chooses a career around impending motherhood, she
is falling into subjectivity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An important aspect of this is how many women are being sexually objectified. The article said that
this is one way women internalized sexism because they believe if they do not wear promiscuous
clothing that they are safe from sexual predators. However, no women would flat out say another
woman was assaulted due to her clothing, they are often thinking about their own clothing choices if
they were in that situation. Furthermore, the article does talk about how women have made strides
towards gender equality, but there is still sexism. Another aspect of SCWAMP discussed in the article
was property holding. The property, in this case, would be knowledge on how to be a girl. This
knowledge would be on things such as shaving your legs, makeup, and trendsetting clothes. Since
society believes that you are not a perfect women unless you follow the norms set out for

Richard Rorty Essay
Richard Rorty is an American philosopher who believed in the anti foundationalist philosophy. Anti
foundationalism teaches that there is no equation for inquiry or knowledge. There are no rational steps
to answer life s questions. Instead Richard Rorty believes, one should ask, what makes ones future
better . In Rorty s work, Democracy and Philosophy, he outlines the differences between democrats
and republicans and how religion is interpreted between the two parties. With regard to religion he
sees republicans as not only shying away from religion, but making it the core of their values. He says
republicans have an eighteenth century view on religion and how it relates to the government. Saying
they see the United States as being founded on the idea that one can be free to practice any religion,
however Christianity still should and does remain the core religion America was founded on; this
according to republicans as seen through the eyes of Richard Rorty. In contrast, on the topic of ...

He says that republicans define democracy as government which is structured on freely elected
individuals. On the other hand Rorty sees democracy defined by the democrats as opportunity for
everyone and making wealth attainable for anyone who is willing and able to work for it. He seems to

Education Is The Most Powerful Weapon
Nelson Mandela one said, Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.
Education is not just a term to explain a process of getting instructions. Instead, education is extremely
essential procedure in one s life to have this weapon as explained by Mandela. As individuals we tend
to learn from life experiences and events that go on around us. We not only learn about how to become
successful in life instead we learn how to make a living as we encounter new individuals and new life
lessons that teach us whether how to cook, clean, or even how to do math. A person cannot only be
educated if they have a degree instead we all are educated in some unique manner whether it is to sew,
draw, sing, or even as a doctor which helps us complete our given task. School is an institution created
to discipline and educate students in order to become more knowledgeable. Many individuals in
history and even people now attend school as it has become a crucial part in our society just like how
other places such as hospitals and stores have in order to meet the needs of the society s members.
Many individuals believe that school is not an essential aspect in life that helps one grow because of
how they are being educated, in which John Gatto is one of them as well. Even though no school is the
best for everyone, it is still needed to help an individual grow emotionally, intellectual, and socially

How Did Pope John Paul II Influence People
I hope to have communion with the people with the people, that is the most important thing was stated

Church because he traveled and talked to everyone. Before Pope John Paul II, popes did not travel

The complexity of China s overall marital and family status, gender equality and standard living

Boethius The Consolation of Philosophy demonstrates many thoughts and ideas that Boethius had
while he was imprisoned at Ravenna. Boethius wrote of his conversations with lady Philosophy, who
came to help cure him during his sentence. Throughout the book, she explained (or reminded)
Boethius of many things such as the nature of power and the nature of fame. Many things that she
explains in the beginning of the book can be summed together with the thought that God governs
everything. God, though not the afterlife, is a very important theme in The Consolation of Philosophy

So, because someone at some time buried the treasure, does that mean one was meant to find it? Yes, I
believe that someone was meant to find it, and it is that person s chance that led him or her to do so.
However, in quot; The Consolation of Philosophy quot;, the idea is that there is no chance in Gods
point of view; that God has a supreme knowledge of everything, and things do not seem to be chance
to him because he may foresee their occurrence. It is implied that God created the world and the order
that it stands in, and that he knows everything that will ever happen to us. So, how is it, then, that we
have free will if God already knows what will happen to us? Does he choose our destiny, or do we
shape it ourselves?
I believe that while God may know our destinies, we do shape them ourselves. It is possible for God to
know our destinies because he knows the future. However, the future in God s perspective is not really
the future per se, it is just a depiction of sequence of things rather than a moment of occurrence. In the
book, Philosophy explains that quot;It is not necessary, they say, that what is foreseen must happen,
but it is necessary that what is destined to happen must be foreseen. quot; (p. __) This may help
explain the idea that even though God knows something, it does not mean that he chose it. I believe

The Problem Of Holding The Negro Down
The problem of holding the Negro down, therefore, is easily solved. When you control a man s
thinking you not have to worry about his actions. You do have stand here or go yonder. He will find
his proper place and will stay in it (Woodson p. 5). In the Miseducation of the Negro he focused in on
the problems of the education system for African Americans leading to the dire effects of plight of the
Negro. This timeless work is relevant and parallel today; he speaks on the lack of racial consciousness
and the self hatred through education that teaches him to despise himself/herself. For African
Americans and other peoples of color, hegemony has placed us as at subordinate class in a white
supremacist patriarchal society. Combining theories of political theorist, Antonio Gramsci, historian
Carter G. Woodson, sociologist W.E.B Du Bois, and social theorist Michael Foucault a theoretical and
practical coherence can show the relationship of knowledge and power. Critical Pedagogy links the

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Indian Marketing Mix
In the marketing mix we chose local responsiveness and local responsiveness is when there are
differences between countries in the structure of market segments, a unique marketing mix to appeal
to a certain segment in a given country may be necessary. And we chose it because in India they need
low price products with low quality, the people in India wants specific products and it s different than
what the other countries needs. Product attributes The attributes have to be the same as what they need
and it has to match their culture, level of economic development and product and technical standards.
In tradition we should have their traditional clothes and accessories, in their population they have big
percentage of young people and it will be easy for us to be popular between the youngsters because
most of the young people know how to use the Internet, there are 22 languages and a lot of religions in
India and we will make all the languages ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The advantages of exporting is to avoid the costs of establishing local manufacturing operations but in
our case we want to have our own stores in the country because it will make it easier for us to
transport our products from our stores to the customers, the second advantage of exporting is that it
helps the firm achieve experience effects and location economies and the last advantage is that it has
control over manufacturing quality. One disadvantage of exporting is that there may be lower cost
manufacturing locations; this will not affect us as souq.com because we don t manufacture our own
products. Another disadvantage of the exporting entry mode is high transport costs and tariffs, this
also will not effect us because we are planning to have stores in India not exporting from another
places. The last disadvantage is that a foreign country agent may not act in exporter s best interest.

Lowering Eligibility Requirements For Students Athletes
Lowering eligibility requirements can be defined as what can be done to maintain eligibility and not
necessarily just maintaining the required GPA. The whole purpose is to take into account the quality of
education the student athletes are receiving. The greatest concern when discussing eligibility
requirements is based on all the topics of changing grades, encouraging the enrollment of easy classes,
and even the admission process. An article was written about keeping the colleges accountable in
terms of making sure the student athletes are getting the best education they can. The chronicle
received a statement from a Big Ten academic advisor stating, you jump, online, finish in a week and
a half, get your grade posted, and you re bowl eligible (Carey, 27). The same article stated that these
online (Carey). The importance of that statement is to bring emphasis that in order to maintain
eligibility you just have to have a certain number of hours and GPA. There are no requirements of the
quality of those hours and grades. How in the world are those student athletes going to benefit from
that circumstance in the long run. The article states that the problem persists because of the term credit
hour , defined as a unit of academic time that does little to measure student learning (Carey). The
article showed significance in emphasizing how student athletes take easy courses just to maintain
certain hours and GPA regardless of the quality of class or education. What is

Marketing to Children
Kaitlin Schultz
April 20, 2005
Prof. Kovach
Response Paper
Marketing Children
Child obesity is a growing problem in today s society. On average 28% of girls age 6 11 are
overweight. Pediatricians are now seeing more and more children with high levels of cholesterol, high
blood pressure, and adult on set diabetes. In 1997 American children obtained 50% of their calories
from added fat and sugar and only 1% of children s diets resembled the recommended proportions of
the Food Pyramid.
The amount of money that is spent marketing to children is outrageous. Companies purposefully
market to the young children s tastes in a variety of ways through package design, typefaces, pictures,
and content. Key elements for successful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Marketers understand that no child is too young to be targeted by television; many of these programs
are linked directly to commercial products. For example, Burger King then McDonald s sponsored the
public television show Teletubbies (show for toddlers). McDonald s distributed toys of the four
characters in their happy meals. It is estimated that advertising for children has now reached over $1
billion. The most common advertised foods seen are not surprisingly low in nutritional value; products
such as, presweetened breakfast cereals, candy, fast food, sodas, cookies, and chips. Its safes to say the
money isn t being spent on advertising of fruits, vegetables, bread, or fish.
Another largely upsetting report found that food commercials stimulate antisocial behavior in
children. Commercials aimed to children are overly dependent on socially negative material, violence,
conflict, and/or trickery. Food companies purposefully entice children by placing logos on toys,
games, clothing, and school supplies. They even go as far as to sponsor clubs, produce magazines, buy
time in movies, obtain celebrity endorsers, and add their logo to baby bottles. For example, McDonald
s offers cups, toys, placemats, movie coupons, special toys, and logo labeled items for all occasions.
Some companies now sell counting books to young children that require the purchase and use of the
brand name. Regrettably, they teach children to count

The Progressive Reform Movement
The era of progressive reform was short, 1900 to about 1917, but much was accomplished and done in
this short time span. Evils like child labor and social ills were thought curable by progressive optimists
like John Spargo and Upton Sinclair but the main focus was urban America. The progressive reform
movement was a period of awareness where people sought to change the injustices of society for
example, Anti Trust laws, recognition of environmental destruction and conservation of national park
land, and improving the American way of life through significant areas of reform like women s
suffrage.
The industrial revolution spawned unimaginable injustices toward the people by capitalists and the
United States government. Overpopulation, poor living ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Progressivism is a political movement and what it caused was rights that everyone deserved. Strikes
happened because there were no rights to protect and make employees comfortable in their working
environment. Progressive reform on the other hand made it so Capitalists could no longer suppress the
problems that they produced. These unimaginable injustices toward the people by capitalists and
government is what really sparked the progressive reform movement and lead to things like strikes.
Desperation for change became critical in the new progressive era. John Spargo, a progressive
muckraker and an active socialist, focused his reform efforts on improving lives of poor children. A
quote from a book he wrote in 1908 advocated government controls over the distribution and
pasteurization of milk to protect the health of babies and children. What spargo said in this quote was
...plea for action; to waken...dormant and neglected powers and impulses...need to be called into active
cooperation in order that evils may be remedied. (doc 4) Spargo, like many other Americans, wished
to fix ills and asked for action to change the way of life for the better. This shows how

Should The Government Regulate The Internet
These days the internet has become an essential part to living for almost everyone but one of the
controversial topics that people bring up is that whether or not the government should regulate
information on the internet. Both sides have valid points which form a reasonable argument. Some
people would say that they need to because of the dangers lurking around in the cyber world but the
reasons for why the government shouldn t regulate the Internet outnumber the reasons for why they
should. The federal government should not regulate or censor information on the internet because
doing so violates the first amendment and citizen s right to privacy, degrades the educational value of
the web, prevents the promotion and facilitation of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In 2011, several people started a Don t Filter Me project. They wanted to remove the web filters on the
school computers that blocked several educational sites. They filed lawsuits and demanded that they
unblock these sites and take away the web filters. Also another group of people petitioned the
Supreme Court to strike down the Communications Decency Act in Reno v. ACLU in 1997. As a
result, the court granted the highest level of First Amendment protection to the internet. Also in 2004,
the Supreme Court announced that it will not hear government s appeal of a ban on the Child Online
Protection Act. They thought of this as a violation of the First Amendment (Internet Censorship 1).
Once again, it would be common sense to allow someone their first amendment and privacy rights.
Without these rights, the people would never be able to truly express their ideas to the public. If the
government censored the internet, people would not be able to publish what they wanted to because of
the internet regulation. Instead of thinking creatively and coming up with new ideas, people would
have to follow regulations. This could be a danger to society because it would hinder the people from
succeeding, evolving, and gaining more information. This is why people should be allowed to think
freely without the federal government censoring and regulating the internet (Redwin 3). This country
started on the foundation and basis of freedom so it should be kept that

Essay on Atomic Structure, Moles and Periodicity
Atomic structure, Moles and Periodicity
The Periodic Table is guidance or map to access different elements specific information, such as:
atomic mass, isotopic richness, nuclear spins, electronic configuration and the position of elements
belong to which group and period in table. Over the past decades there were many Scientifics which
help to improvement of Periodic table but few of them made the most influence and contribution on
Periodic table such as : Johann Dobereiner ,John Newlands , Dmitri Mendeleev and Henry Moseley.
Law of Triads
The development of Periodic table begins with the German chemist Johann Dobreeiner. He collected
similar elements together. His triads were groups of three similar elements for example: Calcium, ...

He continued his way and put forward the elements in order of increasing atomic mass and wherever
he found a interval, simply assumed that this elements had not discovered yet. His way helped him to
work out the atomic mass of undiscovered elements and predict their properties which the later on the
new elements discovered it could go to the right place in his table. He put the elements in order of
relative atomic mass and this gave a problem. For example: Iodine with lower atomic mass was after
Tellurium in table and that breaking his rules.
Modern Periodic table
Henry Moseley came and put the elements in order of increasing atomic number. Actually Mendeelv
was right to put Iodine after Tellurium but he did not know why is like this, but in Henry Moseley way
iodine has higher atomic number than tellurium so iodine must be after tellurium in table.
In the modern periodic table vertical column called Group. There are 8 groups in periodic table which
some of groups have names as well for example group seven named as Halogens or group eight (0)

each group contain of same electron configuration in the outermost shell. A horizontal row called

Growing Up In A Polish Language
Misunderstanding
Most people think languages are different from one another. The languages origin, pronunciation and
grammar. That in fact is not true. Many languages have similarly spelled and pronounced words that
mean the same or similar thing. Most languages around the world use Latin and Greek words, for
example in the medical field but not only. Being a bilingual student I think sharing origins of words
can be very helpful in learning a new language. Growing up in a Polish family, speaking polish,
practing polish culture and tradition made me realize how difficult Polish language is. Many polish
words are composed of letters like; ą, ż, ó, ć. These letters are similar to the ones you can see in a

In matter of fact I could understand and communicate with more people, compared to my mom. Many
jobs require you to speak more than one language and that is why I have the job I have. Or simply you
can go behind someone else s back so they do not find out what you said. That may be a reason why
many conflicts occur, sometimes by mistake and some on purpose. I am a good example of that. As
my dentist appointment approached. I sat on the examining chair with my mom by my side and was
ready to get my tooth pulled. First I got my teeth cleaned by a family friend dental hygienist, but as a
saw the dentist approaching my direction I realized it was time. Meanwhile the doctor looked
throughout my chart I told my mom how scared I was and how I should not be here. We noticed the
dentist was not as pleasant as her online reviews said. She s was not one of those doctors to stop once

Causes Of Gun Violence Essay
Guns and Violence
In discussions of Violence, one controversial issue has been the use of guns and assault rifles. On the
one hand, the NRA argues that a ban on assault rifles will not reduce gun violence. On the other hand,
Judith Miller contends that the second amendment is great but there should be some kind of ban on
assault rifles. My own view is that as long as guns are available there will be gun violence regardless.
The National Rifle Association (NRA) argues that bans on assault rifles and large ammunition
magazines are misguided and conflict the second amendment. The NRA lists ten reasons of why we
should reject firearms ban on large clips and assault rifles. Some of these reasons include the fact that
all assault rifles are not fully ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The fact that more violent crimes are committed with handguns rather than assault rifles is not
stunning at all to me. Handguns are much easier to get a hold of and to sale illegally and assault rifles
are just too big. Also when people think assault rifle they think fully automatic which is not the case
for most assault rifles in the US.
Judith Miller argues that the second amendment gives Americans the right to own guns, but not the
right to own assault rifles. Brings up the Federal Assault Weapons Act of 1994 which banned the
manufacture and sale of semi automatic weapons and magazines. Also the Brady Act which made you
wait five days and you had to have a background check before purchasing a handgun. Although I
agree with Judith Miller to a certain extent, I cannot accept her overall conclusion that assault rifles
should be banned because she gave no kind of statistics about how many deaths or shootings were
done with assault rifles. Only one issue she used was the theater shooting in Colorado. When there are
many other handgun deaths and shooting around the world everyday. Statistically handguns are more
dangerous so why shouldn t they be banned rather than assault

Effects of the Cotton Gin
Effects of the Cotton Gin

Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin around 1763. At the time he invented the
engine Whitney lived with Catherine Greene, a widowed plantation owner. While staying with
Greene, Whitney learned a lot about the production of cotton. He learned it was a tedious, time
consuming and labor intensive job. Whitney was a graduate of Yale and was talented in the field of
mechanics and inventive engineering. Eli s solution was simple, an engine that separated the cotton
after it was picked. The gin would assist farmers who had a difficulty making a living off of the crop
because of the work that went into harvesting. Some history experts have shared the idea that

South Carolina was the number one producer of cotton in the United States, and they were also the
first to secede. The issue of slavery and the division it caused between the North and the South was a
negative affect of the cotton gin. !
!
In conclusion, the cotton gin successfully increased the production of cotton. The
gin lessened the burden of harvesting the crop, making it more profitable to the farmers.
As the cotton gin evolved, the profits gained by the farmers increased exponentially. The gin had a
positive lucrative effect on the farmers and plantation owners of the South. As production increased,
the demand for labor became significant. The southern farmers now had the money to buy slaves
which then assisted in further increasing cotton production. The Southern economy was booming a
century after the gin was invented.
The North did not appreciate that the southern farmers maintained slavery, which led to significant
political issues. Eventually the southern states sought to secede from the
Union. South Carolina, the leading producer of cotton, led the secession. The cotton gin had a
tremendous affect on the Southern economy. This resulted in an increase of wealth and power
throughout the South which was not well received by the North. The increase production of cotton,
resulting from the cotton gin was a primary factor in the division between the North and the South.
The impact of the cotton gin was not just

The Story Of Caroline Curry s Essay
Shoot for the moon even if you miss you ll land among the stars, quote by Les Brown. Caroline Curry

Whores, Wifes, And Slaves Summary
While reading The Red Tent and Goddesses, Whore, Wifes, and Slaves I found myself being dragged

about the books in my everyday conversations. Both of these books were based off of women s

Cooperation And Altruism Is What Largely Divides Humans...
Cooperation and altruism is what largely divides humans from other animals. While some primate and
certain other species do seem to show some precursors to these types of behaviors, none come close to
the ability of humans to help each other. Much of this has to do with our ability to act unselfishly
despite the fact that in the short term being selfish would be more beneficial. Some groups take this to
the extreme like the Hutterites who live in a society where everyone works to serve others. In his book
The Origins of Virtue Matt Ridley claims that we are all Hutterites at heart (38). However, this does
not actually seem to be true the majority of the time. In fact, more often and not, we act selfishly if we
can get away with it without any repercussions. One of the strongest bits of evidence against this
statement comes from experiments in children that show that very young children are more likely to
act selfishly instead of altruistically. Additionally, game theory studies have shown that people are
overall more selfish when they are anonymous compared to when their actions and decisions are being
watched. This would seem to indicate Hutterite s beliefs are not so central to our lives. At the same
time, these studies also show that people are not as selfish as would be expected if they were only
looking out for their benefit. And there are plenty of instances where a person goes out of their way to
help a complete stranger. Overall, I think Ridley s claim is mostly

The Role Of Agriculture During The Soviet Union Age And Now
Russia
Introduction
Russia is a country with sufficient natural resource and labour to support its agriculture development.
Agriculture is not just important to Russia s economic contribution but also impact the agriculture
market changes surround it and international market. In addition, there are some significant changes
between agriculture in former Soviet Union age and now. Now the agriculture in Russia faces the
challenges the opportunity at the same time.
Economic background
As people know Russia is famous as large territory, the total size is about 17.1 million sq. km which is
account as the largest of the world. It is as twice as large of US. Also Russia has large population
which is resource of labour force and also the demand of domestic market. According to the
information from case study, in 2011 Russia has 142.8 million population which is less than half that
of the US. The majority of population is living in western part and urban area. Russia is a country with
rich resource, natural gas, oil and coal are the main product. All those resource can support lots of
machinery on farms.
Agriculture
Agro industrial is divided by three different sub sectors which are inputs industries, agricultural
production and processing marketing. Rural infrastructure development is the main support to agro
industrial complex. Even production sector is holds the most employment with 60% of total but it only
contribute 50% of total revenue. However, food process is the most

Extra-Legal Institutions Case Study
Due to the unlawful nature of their activities, criminals are not able to turn to the state when they
require help in enforcing contracts or to provide them with security. Instead, they have developed a
complex system of extra legal institutions, including written constitutions and a formal separation of
powers. Due to most aspects of our lives being governed by the process of competition, and the
demand for illicit goods being consistently high, it is my contention that extra legal institutions do
present an efficient solution to the problems faced by self enforced exchanges. I will explain this
position, firstly, by examining the governing institutions of the Nuestra Familia Californian prison
gang. Secondly, I will look at the institutions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They are aware of one another s social standing and know who their friends are. Fear of being deemed
an outcast amongst a tightly knit group of convicts encourages the inmates to avoid conflict where
possible. When they wish to purchase illicit goods, the only place they are able to turn is to fellow
inmate entrepreneurs. If one was to take advantage in this exchange, it would quickly be prison wide
knowledge and the perpetrator would would be ostracised or assaulted. Fear of becoming an outlaw
amongst other outlaws incentivises good behaviour and cooperation and as a result of this, the prison
economy flourishes. However, since the 1950 s, it has been difficult to find a prison which is not
densely populated. It is increasingly difficult for inmates to keep track of other prisoners and, in such a
large group, ostracism is no longer a feasible punishment device and so prisoners began to organise
themselves into gangs.
La Nuestra Familia formed in the mid 1960 s as a response to the violence and oppressive actions of
the Mexican Mafia prison gang. The Mexican Mafia had been in charge of every drug transaction and
prison pleasure , as well as victimising Hispanic inmates who could not safely take showers and had

Early Ottoman Medicine
Early Ottoman Medicine ranged from the 16th century to the 18th century but unlike most places of
the time, its medicinal knowledge was not isolated. The Ottomans had a very diverse body of
knowledge and based their practices on ideas from all around the world. The knowledge came from
the traditions of medieval Islam and central Asia. They also collected information from many sources
such as Greek, Persian and Turkish books. When it came to immigrants, Ottomans always had open
arms. By doing this, they were able to collect information from Iranian physicians and Jews who were
running from persecution in countries such as Spain, Portugal and Italy. The Ottomans collected
information from all around the world, helping them implement the most advanced and up to date
practices. However, not all of their practices were advanced. In early Ottoman medicine there was a
wide range of medical practices ranging from those deemed superstitious and supernatural to practices
considered extremely advanced. Some Ottoman physicians practiced advanced methods but they did
not come from advanced beliefs. The beliefs of Humoralism, one of the three types of medicine
practiced at the time would today be laughed at. Humoralists believed that the body was made up of
four humors: blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. They believed that sickness would be caused
by an imbalance of these humors. To heal the sick person it was necessary to find what humor was

  • 2. Why College Education Is Important to Me Why college education is important to me . By Janelle D. Crichlow EN110 Achieving Academic Excellence Ashworth College A college degree is important for a variety of reasons for both the young and the old, namely to develop or improve one s trade skills, to experience different cultures and to increase one s educational background in order to attain a higher paying job. For me, a college degree is important because it will help me to attain the educational background I need to make myself more marketable in the ever changing workforce. It will also provide me with the confidence and skills needed to apply for a better paying job or aid me in attaining the ever elusive promotion, if I so desire. John G. Ramsay, a professor at the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For me personally, the college degree obtained will aid me in being able to better complete the tasks to which I am assigned at work. It will also give my boss actual evidence that I have the necessary skills needed to be promoted to a higher and better paying position. A college degree will give me the knowledge base I need to compete in the workforce. College life makes it possible for students to meet and be acquainted with people from all works of life and to possibly build work contacts with these people later in life. It provides students with access to differing cultures, personalities and attitudes and provides students with the playground to learn to handle them. Due to the fact that a college student is exposed to varying subject matters, both in and out of his faculty, a student can demonstrate to his employee that he is better equipped to handle learning new concepts since he is more well rounded and knowledgeable in different areas, both in and out of his job scope. The efficiency at making and completing short, medium and long term goals, displayed by the student, allows the employer to ascertain how effective the employee will be at setting and achieving his goals and how effective he will be with time management and multitasking. In conclusion, a college degree will provide me with the hope and means of attaining the heights I intend to reach in my workplace. • 3. Sabotage In Ww2 When world war two occurred, Americans feared sabotage and Japanese in general because they were considered to be spies that were helping Japan in the war. So Americans started gathering Japanese Americans and other people they thought could be a threat to lock them in internment or concentration camps. Americans didn t care that most Japanese concentrated in these camps were not supporting, and they simply snatched people away from their homes and memories for the so called country s safety. In the article, Executive Order of 9066, it is mentioned that Franklin Roosevelt feared destruction and decided to ship all the Japanese to a place where they couldn t communicate with the outside world, but could attend school and have access to medical care and to other basic needs. In the article, Their Way to Show Loyalty, it said that 2to prevent sabotage, The most sensible ... way to ensure against it is to move the Japanese out of harm s way and make it as easy as possible for them to go and remain until the war is over. Honestly, before trying to point out mistakes in the world, point out your mistakes first. Don t think you can change the world without changing the world first. Gandhi once said, Be the change that you want to see in the world, (Gandhi). Instead of trying to transform the world, alter the way you think. Differences between people are created when people feel superior than others, so stop thinking this and believe you re all equal to everyone around you. Discriminating is the reason why history kept repeating itself and why people felt ashamed and humiliated. Most importantly, do not judge others. You have no idea what that persons been through and how he or she feels, don t jump the gun before knowing all the facts. • 4. Percy Jackson And The Olympians Research Paper To what extent does American author Rick Riordan accurately portray the Greek gods in his series Percy Jackson and the Olympians as compared to the actual Greek myths and legends? How does Riordan characterize the gods and what effect does his portrayal of them have on the story? In the series Percy Jackson and the Olympians, author Rick Riordan juxtaposes ancient Greek mythology with the modern world. The series tell the story of the title character, demigod Percy Jackson and his friends as they goes on quests to, quite literally, save the world. The Greek gods have an essential role in the series as they provide help and give advice to the demigods, and, more often than not, are the root of all problems. Riordan takes the personas of the gods from various myths and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only major difference between Poseidon in the series and in the myths is the physical appearance. This singular trait is one of the few that actually have an effect if changed; in the series, Poseidon does not look majestic and has a more laidback and simple look and vibe. Throughout the series, Poseidon s status as a god often causes the other characters to be intimidated by him; if he were to be described as majestic in the series, he would be more imposing than he already is. In addition, he is described as wearing modern clothes in the series; if he were to lose this quality and be dressed in ancient Greek clothing, Poseidon would become less relatable to the young adult audience and the series would lose some of its modernity. One of the major obstacles Percy struggles with is learning how to approach and impress Poseidon, his father. Being able to talk to Poseidon and get advice from him helps Percy complete his quests and resolve major issues which would be more difficult to accomplish if Poseidon were any less ... • 5. Billy Abbott And Lou Costello There may not be a more well known comedy routine in the American consciousness than that of Who s on First? by Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. The routine has been parodied, satirized and imitated by countless TV shows, movies, and theatre productions, and the joke has become almost a cultural shorthand for confusing situations. Because Who s on first? has become such a large part of popular culture, many writers, directors and producers make allusions to the sketch freely. However, as the producers of one Broadway show discovered, when allusions become direct reproductions, there may be legal liability for copyright infringement. Hand to God Faces Lawsuit The playwright, producer and promoter of the Broadway play Hand to God were served with a lawsuit alleging that production infringed on Abbott Costello s copyright to the Who s on First? routine. The play, which has been nominated for several Tony awards, features a scene where the lead character, a teenage boy, attempts to impress a girl by performing part of the sketch with a sock puppet. The girl does not understand the reference, and boy initially tries to claim credit before eventually admitting that it was a famous routine from the 1950s. According to the lawsuit, the creators of Hand to God used the dialogue from Who s on First? without license or permission from the heirs of Abbott Costello, and rejected a request to change the production after the heirs sent a cease and desist letter. The heirs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Animal Cruelty And Its Effects On Society For years, animals have been a form of entertainment whether it has been in movies, shows, circuses, or for a romantic night out. Most families love this type of entertainment because it is kid friendly and believe it is cool to watch animals do all kinds of tricks. But do they ever wonder what really goes on behind closed doors? Entertainment animals have had to endure a lot of pain, depression, and torture in the process; aside from that not all of them have that happy ending. No one enjoys pain, this includes humans and animals, and so no one should have be force to go through it. Each year hundreds of animals die from animal cruelty. Animals used for entertainment have to endure pain in various ways this can be anything from being whipped to being electrocuted. Animals have no way of saying STOP, stop hurting me all they can do is make noise but most handlers choose to ignore the cries or enjoy the sound of it. While one is out trying to impress their significant other, they get on a carriage because they think it is romantic, but do they stop to think that maybe the horse does not enjoy pulling them around town. Horse drawn carriages have died each year from heat strokes, inhaling exhaust fumes, and leg problems. Countless other incidents have occurred in which humans and horses were involved, especially in the city; many of which humans were at fault either for driving carelessly or impatiently. • 7. Dyslexia Teaching Understanding Dyslexia: Defining, Identifying, and Teaching Research suggests that while there is no cure for Dyslexia, students can adapt through multi sensory instruction and become successful members of society (Allen, 2010). In order to instruct students with dyslexia, it is crucial that educators understand what dyslexia is, what causes it, and the steps to identifying a student who struggles with reading and shows signs of dyslexia (Allen, 2010). According to Allen (2010), of those who have identified as having a learning disability, 80% are affected by a reading disability. According to Dejerine, Dyslexia is suspected to be neurobiological in origin. This is confirmed by way of functional magnetic resonance imaging (Allen, 2010). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After their struggles are recognized, good teaching will allow them to perform to the best of their ability (MacKay, 1997). In order to make students with dyslexia feel more comfortable about reading there are a few steps to follow. While telling students to read a book and then write a paper on it may seem like basic instructions, to a student with dyslexia that could seem like a nightmare. MacKay presents a few steps to follow when reading which include: title, captions, pictures, questions, and reading. This is very beneficial to a student with dyslexia because his/her brain needs tasks to be broken down otherwise they will feel like they are out of memory (MacKay, 1997). There are many organizational tools that are helpful when reading or categorizing information. Brainstorming is a great tool because no organization is required, it is simply just putting thoughts on paper (MacKay, 1997). When timing is appropriate to organize the information mind maps would be beneficial. Mind maps are a way to put your ideas together and sort information into paragraphs in order to compile a paper (MacKay, 1997). For those who do not prefer mind maps another option would be using linear notes. Linear notes simply means leaving room in the margin for the student to write down facts he/she feels important (MacKay, 1997). MacKay elaborates that teaching dyslexic students study skills proves that thinking and reasoning skills can shine even though their basic skills may be a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Parents Role in School Shootings Essay When children commit a horrible act such as a school shooting their parents often look for someone or something to blame rather than looking at what role they, as parents, may have had in the tragedy. The often targeted entertainers, video game developers, teachers, drug companies, and writers are rarely, if ever, responsible for such tragic outcomes and, unfortunately, often become victims as a result of lawsuits filed in an attempt to place blame on them. The parents of dangerous children must be scrutinized and sued alongside every other entity being blamed for the heinous crimes that children commit. Before the 1999 Columbine tragedy, there was the 14 year old boy in Paducah, Kentucky who, in 1997, went on a shooting spree at his local school. Parents of 3 of the shooting victims filed lawsuits against 25 media companies seeking $130 million in damages, citing that the shooter, Michael Carneal, learned how to shoot a gun by playing video and computer games. The lawsuits further implied that violent movies and internet pornography were to blame for the boy s behavior (Holmstrom, par. 6). In both the Columbine and the Paducah, Kentucky cases the parents of the shooters were sued on the grounds that they should have known, and prevented, the tragedies from occurring. According to an article written by Mark Walsh regarding the Paducah shooting, a state law negligence suit named 45 defendants, including McCracken County...teachers...who allegedly failed to interpret warning signals [referring to a paper that Carneal had written depicting a fictitious school shooting] that 14 year old Michael Carneal would go on a murderous rampage (Walsh, par. 4). The case against the employees of the McCracken County School District was dismissed by Judge William Shadoan, citing, We cannot expect those teachers and administrators to be psychiatrists, lawyers, psychologists, or physicians (Walsh, par. 15). • 9. Examples Of The American Dream In Gran Torino In today s day and age, it would be very difficult to find someone who has not heard of the American dream. Although most people have heard of the American dream, if you were to ask a couple people what the phrase means to them, there would probably be very different responses. With all the various interpretations of the American dream out there, it has probably become somewhat difficult to truly understand the meaning behind the phrase. However, no film better portrays what the American dream is than Gran Torino. In Gran Torino, it is shown that the American dream is much more than owning large amounts of material objects, but rather being able to live happily in America, and that is a goal that anyone can reach, no matter the race or gender. As long as they are willing to travel down a potentially hard road and put in the work, the American dream is attainable. Sometimes on the path of achieving the American dream, it can be easy to forget what the American dream truly is, and make the mistake of believing that wealth equates to being successful a person. This article went into discussing how everyone has internalized sexism, believing in sexism in their head, whether they like to believe it or not. This is because society teaches people norms that women must follow in order for them to be respected. As we have discussed in class, this is the idea of subjectivity because all of these social codes are predetermined and that makes them very difficult to change. One example of this was in the article when it talked about how women often chose their careers around them someday becoming mothers. Women are expected to have children and then take time off from work to raise their children. No one believes that men should be expected to stay at home and raise children because it is not the societal norm. Furthermore, the article does talk about how women have made strides towards gender equality, but there is still sexism. Another aspect of SCWAMP discussed in the article was property holding. Anti foundationalism teaches that there is no equation for inquiry or knowledge. There are no rational steps to answer life s questions. In Rorty s work, Democracy and Philosophy, he outlines the differences between democrats and republicans and how religion is interpreted between the two parties. He says republicans have an eighteenth century view on religion and how it relates to the government. Yes, I believe that someone was meant to find it, and it is that person s chance that led him or her to do so. However, in quot; The Consolation of Philosophy quot;, the idea is that there is no chance in Gods point of view; that God has a supreme knowledge of everything, and things do not seem to be chance to him because he may foresee their occurrence. It is implied that God created the world and the order that it stands in, and that he knows everything that will ever happen to us. So, how is it, then, that we have free will if God already knows what will happen to us? Does he choose our destiny, or do we shape it ourselves? I believe that while God may know our destinies, we do shape them ourselves. It is possible for God to know our destinies because he knows the future. However, the future in God s perspective is not really the future per se, it is just a depiction of sequence of things rather than a moment of occurrence. Caroline Curry did not technically shoot for the moon, but for the soccer goal instead. Making the decision to play soccer was one she did not regret. I guess you could say it landed on the moon. It may not seem like a big deal to take up a new sport, but joining soccer was vital to shaping her as a person. The story of Caroline Curry deciding to play soccer is not an emotional one. Not only was I reading these books but I also found myself talking about the books in my everyday conversations. Both of these books were based off of women s society, but not in today s world but in the past. Many of the things I was reading I found amazing. Recommending this book to anyone I am sure that they would read further more into the topic as well as I. The two books I ve choose to read Goddesses, Whores, Wifes, and Slaves where non fiction; written by Sarah B Pomeroy. Thoughtout the book Sarah Pomeroy illustrates the purpose of writing the book was to show the social history of women in ancient history. The time of the book was around 1500 years, from Bronze Age Greece to the late Roman empire. I believe she wanted to educate today s age about what really happened in the women s society during ancient history. • 35. Cooperation And Altruism Is What Largely Divides Humans... Cooperation and altruism is what largely divides humans from other animals. While some primate and certain other species do seem to show some precursors to these types of behaviors, none come close to the ability of humans to help each other. Much of this has to do with our ability to act unselfishly despite the fact that in the short term being selfish would be more beneficial. Some groups take this to the extreme like the Hutterites who live in a society where everyone works to serve others. In his book The Origins of Virtue Matt Ridley claims that we are all Hutterites at heart (38). However, this does not actually seem to be true the majority of the time. In fact, more often and not, we act selfishly if we can get away with it without any repercussions. One of the strongest bits of evidence against this statement comes from experiments in children that show that very young children are more likely to act selfishly instead of altruistically. Additionally, game theory studies have shown that people are overall more selfish when they are anonymous compared to when their actions and decisions are being watched. This would seem to indicate Hutterite s beliefs are not so central to our lives. At the same time, these studies also show that people are not as selfish as would be expected if they were only looking out for their benefit. And there are plenty of instances where a person goes out of their way to help a complete stranger. Overall, I think Ridley s claim is mostly ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 37. Extra-Legal Institutions Case Study Due to the unlawful nature of their activities, criminals are not able to turn to the state when they require help in enforcing contracts or to provide them with security. Instead, they have developed a complex system of extra legal institutions, including written constitutions and a formal separation of powers. Due to most aspects of our lives being governed by the process of competition, and the demand for illicit goods being consistently high, it is my contention that extra legal institutions do present an efficient solution to the problems faced by self enforced exchanges. I will explain this position, firstly, by examining the governing institutions of the Nuestra Familia Californian prison gang. Secondly, I will look at the institutions ... Fear of being deemed an outcast amongst a tightly knit group of convicts encourages the inmates to avoid conflict where possible. When they wish to purchase illicit goods, the only place they are able to turn is to fellow inmate entrepreneurs. If one was to take advantage in this exchange, it would quickly be prison wide knowledge and the perpetrator would would be ostracised or assaulted. Fear of becoming an outlaw amongst other outlaws incentivises good behaviour and cooperation and as a result of this, the prison economy flourishes. However, since the 1950 s, it has been difficult to find a prison which is not densely populated. It is increasingly difficult for inmates to keep track of other prisoners and, in such a large group, ostracism is no longer a feasible punishment device and so prisoners began to organise themselves into gangs. La Nuestra Familia formed in the mid 1960 s as a response to the violence and oppressive actions of the Mexican Mafia prison gang. The Mexican Mafia had been in charge of every drug transaction and prison pleasure , as well as victimising Hispanic inmates who could not safely take showers and had their guests victimised during visiting ... • 38. Early Ottoman Medicine Early Ottoman Medicine ranged from the 16th century to the 18th century but unlike most places of the time, its medicinal knowledge was not isolated. The Ottomans had a very diverse body of knowledge and based their practices on ideas from all around the world. The knowledge came from the traditions of medieval Islam and central Asia. They also collected information from many sources such as Greek, Persian and Turkish books. When it came to immigrants, Ottomans always had open arms. By doing this, they were able to collect information from Iranian physicians and Jews who were running from persecution in countries such as Spain, Portugal and Italy. The Ottomans collected information from all around the world, helping them implement the most advanced and up to date practices. However, not all of their practices were advanced. In early Ottoman medicine there was a wide range of medical practices ranging from those deemed superstitious and supernatural to practices considered extremely advanced. Some Ottoman physicians practiced advanced methods but they did not come from advanced beliefs. The beliefs of Humoralism, one of the three types of medicine practiced at the time would today be laughed at. Humoralists believed that the body was made up of four humors: blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile. They believed that sickness would be caused by an imbalance of these humors.
